Jrue Holiday

draft talk is always fun and entertaining to bring up, even "early" in the season.  Team records are far from established there's no telling how high up in the draft the dubs MIGHT be up in the draft.  Especially when you consider the trade deadline is far away and none of us have a clue what the warriors' roster is gonna look like by the end of the season.  but i just want to put in a word for jrue holiday, my man.  I go to ucla, and i get to witness this guy first hand, the mans vision is incredible.  He did his thing during highschool establishing himself as one of the best in the game, but he hasn't been getting nearly enough recognition as to what he might bring to a team like golden state.

let's talk about the positives.

pros

-like i said before, vision.  i know he might not be leading in assists or anywhere near that, but just watch him play.  he recognizes who's got the hot hand, he'll stay calm around the perimeter for most of the shot clock threatening opponents to pressure him and pay most of their attention to him allowing his teammates to set up for the play they want to run.

-this leads to my next point, getting the team involved.  This is what he does best,(unique for a player of his talent) he takes the pressure off his teammates, being a solid player who doesnt risk throwing up selfish shots, letting his boys run around the court with more than ample time to get in position for the play howland/ucla really wants to run.  If that options not open, he's more than ready to pull the crossover and put in a smooth bucket.  he's done this over and over again, shooting better than .500 from the field.

-which once again leads to my next point, the looks he gets are incredible.  He has a phenomenal first step, i dont wanna overhype this guy but he has the quickness and the confidence of anyone in the nba to this day, just as good as d rose.  he'll drive into you and pull away just as quick with his feet planted to knock in a smooth jumper.

-his activity of defense is almost as impressive as the rest of his game.  With his speed, the one talent that above all can't be taught, he's ready to force the turnover and for a pg, he's blocking at least one shot almost every game. most importantly, he's not slacking on the d, something a lot of offensive minded players in the game tend to do, conserve their energy for the fast breaks and the offense.  He treats his defensive game with just as much emphasis and can hang with the toughest opponents.

cons

-he's most definitley not undersized for a pointguard, but comparing him to bd, he's the same height, but down 35 pounds.  He's not gonna be able to rough up other point guards in the game for the layup/dunk just cuz he lacks that strength.  That is huge advantage, and an undersized mostly young team like the warriors (assuming the warriors are still that team come draft time) needs a player that can do that.  badly.

-his 3 point shooting is far from stellar.  yeah, he can always work on it, and yes he'll probably improve it over the course of his freshman season, but that's the main asset the warriors have needed from their point guards.  Watson's consistency from long range has been brought up over and over.  If holiday was to end up on the warriors, wouldn't watson's "clutchness" and his triples outweight anything holiday has to offer?

-i know this seems contradictory, because i brought up his ability to get his teammates involved under the "pros", but is he doing it well enough?  a pg needs to be able to find the man for a quick dish and flush, something jrue has NOT been doing nearly enough.  true, he lets his teammates be able to get into the places that they have been most comfortable at but he has to learn to be able to draw more pressure on him, especially by driving to the bucket and then kicking the ball out to his teammates for an open look.  So far its mostly been set up for the set up, and let the 2 or 3 guys i'm involving run their play.

Ok, thats it for me but this is my disclaimer, and i feel as tho its necessary.  The majority of peeople here on GSoM are experts on the game of basketball, and mad respect to all of you.  I almost feel like i'm disrespecting you by coming in here as a new user and telling you my personal opinions that probably don't count for much and arent nearly as well researched as many of statements as you guys have to make.  However, i genuinely feel like jrue has the skill set to be a major contributor to the warriors and i hope that if he does end up on the team, he'll take their game further than they have.

Jrue Holiday

Since we’re already flooded with PGs, I’d rather stick with our plan of polishing Monta Ellis as becoming our leader. We’re committed to him with that big pay increase. Once Monta recovers from his injury and adapts to team chemistry with the new players, we should see very promising results. Monta’s backup for the meantime, C.J. Watson, has become a somewhat reliable PG. The guy’s hella quick and can shoot mid-range jumpers. C.J.‘s backup Marcus Williams has become a bust. I can see why we would wanna consider drafting Jrue Holiday. Theoretically, getting Jrue would be quite beneficial. He’ll provide a spark off our bench and give us more depth at the PG spot. As Nellie has done with rookies, Jrue won’t play significant minutes until later into the season. Since we’re still early in this rebuilding year, we gotta scrutinize more and more as well as speculate how much better these rookies would be this season.

we are flooded with gaurds....not point gaurds

we dont have ANY good true point gaurds. none.

exactly

it’s been a bit of a problem this year. though, it doesn’t sound like holiday is a true point either, so i’m not sure he’d be the guy i’d want. unless he’s the clear bpa, then it doesn’t matter how many combo guards we have, you take him.

yea

he looks good. and i like the idea of a so cal baller. i think if the team decides to go point gaurd they should take a look at patty mills. he gave a lot of other teams problems in the olympics.

CJ

watson has definitely exceeded the label “a somewhat reliable pg.” We play great with him on the floor, he is good when he starts, and when he comes off of the bench, he is great for a back up point.

CJ is an undersized SG. In no way, shape or form should the words “CJ” and “point guard” be uttered in the same sentence.

are you kidding

he is a very good ball-handler, passer and has a fairly high IQ. what more do you want in a point guard? or are you going to refute my claims. Now he is not gonna start for a contender but he is a very nice backup point.

Our draft strategy should be simple,

draft the best player available no matter what the position.
With the exception of center we have nobody that has proven for any position.

What is the status of our petitions to fire Robert Rowell and have Chris Cohan commit Hari Kiri, or at least sell the team?

by warriorsscore110 on Jan 5, 2009 10:12 AM PST reply actions

no center AND no SG AND no SF

we need PG or PF only

pref a really good point gaurd IMO if we cant get baron back

by DeepS on Jan 5, 2009 1:18 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t know about that. It’s supposed to be a weak draft but I’d be happy with a real backup 5. I may be setting the bar low, but we’ve got lots of guys with potential to develop. I’d be happy with something closer to a sure thing filling a much needed role, even if it’s a back up role. I don’t believe in paying MLE type money for a bunch of backups. I’d rather pay top dollar for quality starters and fill the rest of the positions with quality young back ups. Best use of the cap space, imo. Mullens or Thabeet would be fine picks to fill a much needed role.

With respect to SF, I would happily draft a future starter at that position if one were avaiable. He’d need to have good size and good defensive ability. I don’t see a future 3 on the team, just a crap load of backup 2’s.

Nelson doesn’t do that whole “developing” thing. If we draft, we have to draft an impact player that can step in right away and contribute.

Lets see, that leaves us with only 1-2 options right now with the way the draft is looking. Mullens and thabeet are number 1 and 2 in the “Biggest Project Bigman” award. They’d see about the same time as POB did during his tenure here.

Unless it’s Blake Griffin, I really don’t see an impact player that Nellie could conceivably play minutes right away.

How About

if we don’t get the #1 pick in the draft, then we trade either wright or randolph, the pick that we get, let’s say the #6, and maybe a second rounder or one of our other young players, for the #1 pick Blake Griffin. He would make us a way better rebounding and defensive team as well as giving us the power forward we’ve been looking for.
lineup:
pg: monta
sg: azubuike/blinelli
sf: Jackson/Maggette
pf: Griffin
c: Biedrins

We would still be the youngest team in the nba and a top notch contender in years to come.

by duballers23 on Jan 5, 2009 4:22 PM PST reply actions

griffin's the clear #1

that pick isn’t going anywhere for wright or randolph, even with our #1 and 2 thrown in. if the warriors were a top 3 pick, then maybe. but #6 won’t happen. you’d really need to sweeten the deal.

i know what we should do

we should forfeit our draft pick unless we know we’re going to give them an average of 30 minutes per game just so don nelson won’t destroy another young career.

that’s it.
