Warrior VS. Lakers

Tragedy hits home once again. It is tough to see a team with so much talent fail so miserably. It is one thing to be a fan of a loosing team who is bad, and another to be a fan of team who is good but has gotten used to loosing. Unfortunately, the warriors seem to fall under the category of the latter.

Consider these stats. Corry Maggette goes 2-5 in free throws. Paul Gasol goes 9/9. Biendrins makes a bucket for the LA Lakers. Paul Gussol gets two wide open dunks: one from a missed rebound from Maggette, another from a tip by Azebukie. Are they that unlucky, or are they just used to being losers?

I can't recall a single game that the Warriors have come back in the last 5 minutes to win the game this year. Not surprisingly, the opponents seem to come back against us in countless games, including this one.

This team makes turnovers when it is most dangerous to do so. They play hard and crash the boards for 90% percent of the game. The 10% we let up happens when it matters the most, like when you need a stop towards the end of the game. The amount of offensive boards that we give up towards the latter stages of the game makes it seemingly impossible to win.

I can only hope that the Warriors are as tired of these lame performances as the fans are tired of seeing failure from the Bay Area teams.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Gotta live with it though

I don’t expect us to get a high lottery pick. I’m just hoping a true pg falls into our lap at whatever pick we have. Get mad all ya’ll want, but I believe the pieces with the exception of a pg are there. Of course, health too. All teams have injuries. It’s just the contenders play through it. Now if you’re out of it like us, of course they’ll take some time off because it’s not worth jeopardizing their health in the long haul for really nothing to play for.

A friendly piece of advice: no one here knows you, or cares about you. The only way you’ll ever earn a grain of respect and credibility on this site is to listen to and engage other people’s views and back your own up with some good ol’ solid logical arguments. Well good on Albino for at least avoiding the barrage of “harpoons” that was sure to reign down upon him. Even GSoM’s resident republican wasnt about to step in and try and back him on that one. Though I must admit, as socially unjust as it may be ,I do find the incredible irony in the fact that the huge minority vote turnout for Obama probably cost California liberals one of their most important issues just a wee bit amusing. Interesting that the nutty side of the religious right is still catching all the blame for this one even though the right itself obviously didnt control anywhere near 50% of the vote, not to mention the large number of strong fiscal and social conservatives, like myself, who dont align themselves with the church and voted no. Strange as it may seem, and as hard as it may be for liberals to accept, the blame should fall squarely on the left for this one. Or maybe the rest of California just decided to oppose Sam23 on everything. (Seriously, they may as well have just sent my ballot back to me with a giant FAIL printed on it.) Either way its really just delaying the inevitable. I’ll stop talking now that I’m sure I’ve offended every possible side of this issue.

That’s the great thing about recced diaries: over time, they seem to keep sprouting new threads…

Agreed about the irony of the big minority turnout inspired by Obama helping to propel Prop 8 to victory. Pretty depressing, actually.

On the bright side, looking at the bigger picture: in America, the forces of intolerance and hate have tended, over time, to get trampled by the forces of fairness, freedom, and tolerance. Up until 1967, there were laws in our country that prohibited interracial marriage; how those laws seem ridiculous to all but a nutty minority. Hopefully, in 40 years (or ideally sooner) people will say the same about Prop 8.

I have my doubts. It seems to me that gay marriage holds a far greater “icky” factor for those who oppose it than interracial marriage ever did. (I apologize for the use of such a crude term with such insulting connotations, but it really is the best term I can use to describe the way the opposition I’ve encountered feel about it) I do think the legalization of gay marriage is inevitable long term, but I also think its a much bigger obstacle than most people, especially in the bay area, think its going to be. I could be mistaken though, perhaps the courts will again take an “ends justify the means” approach and we’ll be done with it in a couple years.

Sigh. There really isn’t that much happening with the Warriors anymore. They’re losing because they’re young, injured, and young & injured. There is nobody we can even remotely trade and the youngin’s are up and down, which leads to “Hey, let’s trade Jackson for McGrady” trade proposals and “Hey Randolph had 4 rebounds and zero turnovers in the last quarter!!! He’s so frigging awesome!!!” That, and I’ve been traveling a lot, which always screws with my GSoM time. I’m still here, waiting in the shadows for an interesting discussion.

and I can actually see Atma and co.’s reasoning for not wanting political threads constantly popping up, but McCoveychronicles goes off topic fairly regularly (movies, pop culture, music, etc) with a fair amount of success. I dont see a huge problem with an open forum if it isnt always the same two idea rocks being bashed against each other like those political threads ended up being after the first 300 posts.

Lately...

I’ve found the off topic stuff much more entertaining than the actual basketball discussion. However, that may have something to do with the quality of the product we are discussing. At this point I mostly come here to be amused by the same short list of posters that I suspect most of us skim through all the other stuff to read.

I think it would be great to have a community thread, or OT catch-all here. Of course I can see why the main writers would see it as a distraction. It would be cool if SBnation branched out a bit and started an official general discussion site that any of the main writer from all the SBnation sites could post their OT thoughts and the community could BS with one another. But again, the idea doesn’t exactly fit in with the business plan.

Re: Atma and co.’s reasoning for not wanting political threads constantly popping up

My opinion is if you call a professional sports team bad, you obviously don’t know how to appreciate pro sports. Yes, there are teams that aren’t as good as others, but you’re calling a group of pro sports players awful? Can you as the judgers do any better than them? I think not. I mean they’re in the pros, and you’re not. Enough said.

My opinion is if you call a professional sports team bad, you obviously don’t know how to appreciate pro sports.

You gotta judge them by their peers. According to the standing the Warriors are not the worst but are pretty bad. The Lakers are on top however . Now if you took the bad warrior players and the good laker players and all the other players in the league and put them in a pot you’d have a big mess.

"...if you call a professional sports team bad, you obviously don’t know how to appreciate pro sports"

For what it’s worth, I don’t think anyone is contending that professional athletes aren’t amazing athletes (even those on teams such as the Lions). I think the contention is, on a relative basis, some pro teams are terrible (relative to others in their respective sport at the same professional level). The same can be said for the "Golden Boy" Oscar DeLaHoya, while still a terrific boxer vs. the rest of the general population, he looked terrible vs. Mayweather, Hopkins, and Pacquiao.

Calling people idiots doesn’t seem necessary, in my opinion.

No one cares!

Enough posting trying to defend your feelings. Just give some hard Warriors notes and leave it at that. Your original post is becoming a waste because of too many nonsense comments.

On that note…

Warriors ARE a good team. And I get what your saying. The losing bug has got the Warriors, and no matter how “good” they may play, in the end they expect to lose, so they will.

They need a shock to the system that will get them out of the losing habit.

They need to get shot with a little Mississippi Bullet. Bring Monta back and here is what you have.

Perfect Nelli Starting lineup.

Monta – Slasher, Playmaker
Crawford – Shooter, Playmaker
Jax – Shooter, Playmaker
Maggette – Slasher, Size, Freethrows
Biedrins – Garbage Man. Rebounder, Interior D.

This lineup may look limited to some of you, but Nelli will exploit Defenses with the 2 slasher, 2 shooter combo. Get ready for some exciting basketball once again. And did I mention W’s. Yes, we will start winning games as well

I think the playoffs is done for us this year

But I think we’ll still be competitive as hell once we have the full squad back, and we will carry that into next season with a hella good draft pick.

Those two don’t go together. If we play better in the second have our draft chances get worse. We should break Montay’s other foot and play Kurz and go for the losses.

Me too.

My (provisional) starting 5, when Monta returns to full speed:

Monta
Azubuike
Maggette
Wright
Biedrins

With Craw, Morrow, Jack, Rudolph and Ronny coming off the bench.

Obviously it hinges on Monta being able to manage the point, but the payoff is huge: a starting lineup in which we’re actually efficient and actually not small at all five positions.

OBAMA AMABO

by Sleepy Freud on Jan 9, 2009 1:57 PM PST up reply actions

I would swap out Maggette with Jackson for two reasons

1. You can start Jackson defending the opposing team’s best 2 o3 with Azubuike defending the other. Otherwise you have no perimeter defense there.

2. Jackson can (if he wants to) pass and play within the context of an offense. Give everyone else a chance to get into the flow of the game. Otherwise you’re playing offense 4 on 5 with Maggette waiting around to run his favorite play (Pretend the ball is a ticking bomb and the only way to diffuse it is to throw it at the iron as soon as humanly possible). That play works better off the bench, especially if the offense is not scoring. He can come in the game and get to the line or score and it also gives the other players a breather on the offensive end since they’ll all be standing around watching.

It must be the air we inhale.

The pollute air in LA does wonders.

Anyway, I agree with anyone that said the Warriors is a good team. Good team do good. They stay with the other opponent’s team. And don’t lose by too much points.

But it’s the greater teams that win. We, are not yet there. (someday)

And what is up with the men in this thread? Respect each others opinions. I can’t recall names and is far too busy to type up all those names..it’s like saying “XXX I think you’re mom is hot.” and the men goes, “What??!?! WTF? The game now is lottery picks

That same old story, thought we were past that. Looking at our draft history so far, I think we’ve had better success in the second round. Maybe we can trade our 1st for 4 second round picks. And looking at this draft is kind of depressing. I just wish we weren’t so good, then maybe we could win some games.

by jmaaan on Jan 13, 2009 12:41 AM PST up reply actions

Everyone keeps saying this isnt a strong draft after Griffin, I disagree, I think it has the potential to be a pretty strong draft class.

by sam23 on Jan 13, 2009 1:03 PM PST up reply actions

IMy concern about this draft is threefold. First, that several of the players who are listed on mock drafts may not come out. Second, there are a lot of very raw players in this draft. And third, there seem to be a lot of combo guards and skinny 4’s available.

I know you draft for talent, not position, but I’d really like to see the W’s get a quality backup center, a player who is big and can rebound. We get killed when Biedrins isn’t in the game and I think a larger 5 would compliment him well. I’d also like to get a playmaking point guard and a young 3 with good size and overall skill set. You don’t have to draft those players, you can trade your pick or draft a player who is redundant and trade one of our existing pieces.

But without Oden/Durant/Horford; Bogut/Williams/Paul; or Rose/Beasely/Mayo top of the draft, it’s less exciting this year. I for one am not sold on Griffin.

by jmaaan on Jan 15, 2009 6:05 PM PST up reply actions

Why aren't you sold on Griffin?

I’m honestly wondering, as I’ve still only seen him in highlights and YouTube clips. To me he looks like every bit the surefire pro that Beasley was, and then some — bigger, more aggressive, higher hoops IQ, better rebounder, more efficient from the floor. What’s not to like?

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Jan 15, 2009 6:45 PM PST up reply actions

It seems to me that Beasley being a “disappointment” (because he isnt putting up 20 and 10s nightly) seems to have lowered the draft stock of Griffin among fans. If Beasley were a stronger ROY candidate I think a lot more people would be excited about Griffin. I think Griffin is better than Beasley actually. I think he does more to make his team better than Beasley did.

I think people aren't sold on Blake yet

because he’s not as polished offensively. Beasley shot the college 3 with ease, and as a result was basically unguardable. Blake has a serviceable offensive game, he’s got a nice baseline spin, but he’s doesn’t have any dependable offensive moves. He’s a much better defender, rebounder, and hustle player than Beasley was, he just isn’t as smooth offensively. He’s gonna be a solid big for years.
