Warriors Should Sign Darius Miles
We all know this is going to be a long stretch of seasons. Blame mopeds, poor shooting or the loss of Thunder, but it will be 4-5 more years before we can acquire the players we need to mount a solid challenge for the playoffs. We'll see more tears than joy, more pain than pleasure. We are used to these things, it's our lot in life.
One thing we can do is bring another team down in the gutter with us.
The Blazers are now a Western rising and semi-enjoyable team who have cleaned up from their JailBlazer days via smart draft picks and an unwavering aim for class. They have cut every last one of their convicts including the nanny-raper Patterson, gun toting Z. Randolph, marijuana possessing Rasheed Wallace, gun-toting Telfair, dog-fighting Qyntel Woods and my favorite NBA criminal, Damon Stoudamire, who was caught with marijuana at the airport. It was wrapped in tin-foil. And he took it through a metal detector. This brings me to their other hard luck case: Darius Miles (violating substance abuse policy).
As explained in this article, Darius Miles was cut by the Blazers for what they deemed was a career ending injury. Now of course, Miles can still play - his injury wasn't actually career ending. The Blazers just wanted him out as quickly and cleanly as possible as part of their makeover. (It should be said that microfracture surgeries have varied results, but have improved dramatically over the last few years)
Here is the catch : if any team signs Miles, and he plays 1 second in 2 separate games - the Blazers get an extra $18 million on their books. That's one free agent signing gone. And it's a swift, Johnny Cage-style punch in their balls courtesy of the Warriors.
We're going to have difficulty beating them on the court the next few seaons as Oden, Roy and Webster continue to improve. Let's beat them at a game we know we can win: the game is called Hooride the Blazers.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Excellent point.

Yes we should
just to spit in their face for the letter they sent to all the GM-s in the league threatening them with lawsuits if they sign Miles just to “screw” them?!?
How can you prove that someone signed Miles just for the sake of screwing the blazers? Ummmm……you can’t.
For this( http://www.nba.com/2009/news/features/01/09/dose.20090109/index.html)letter i despise them from now on. Who do they think they are bastards threating the others with lawsuits?

Haha. Anyone see PTI?
Kornheiser was all, “The Nuggets should sign Miles, then start him in Portland.” I think someone should seriously do that. If you’re in the division, it makes a lot of sense to get your opponent as far over the cap as possible. It would make it harder for them to trade, and it would also make it near impossible to sign anyone.

No Exactly
http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2009/jan/09/memphis-grizzlies-re-sign-darius-miles/
Portland is still expected to be under the cap this summer. If the Blazers let Raef LaFrentz’s $12.7 million contract expire and Miles’ contract goes back on their books, they would be approximately $7.5 million under the current cap.
The figure would be $16.5 million if Miles never played.
There are a lot of valuable free agents under $7.5 million that the Blazers could sign. Having $7.5 million dollars in cap space does not make signing a free agent “near impossible.”

Having Miles contract on the books
would put them over the luxury tax. Unless they are only 3 million over the cap right now, than what you just posted is impossible.

They will be over this year and have to pay the tax
But once the season is over and they cut a couple of guys with Raef contract going off the books, they will have cap space. I didn’t make up that link or that quote. They have Diogu’s and Frye’s contract that will go off the books with Raef’s. There is some caphold junk in there, but basically if they are let go, the Blazers will be under the cap after this season.
by tominhawaii on Jan 10, 2009 1:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
They are 11 million over the cap, Miles' contract would put them up over 20 million.
12 million coming off the books would leave them at ten.

But I can’t imagine there is any ground the Blazers are standing on UNLESS it came out that a team was signing him just to F them over.
The players union is going to bat for Miles anyhow that’s another sign of danger for the Blazers. Let’s pull the trigger.

Right. Because it’s such a great move to piss off an owner who cares more about winning than you owner and could (and would) spend more money than he’d lose from us signing Miles to screw us over at every chance from here on out.
Think people. Is it really worth being in Paul Allen’s cross hairs while simultaneously showing the rest of the NBA that you’re not really a reputable team to deal with, but just a side show to screw others?
by jae on Jan 9, 2009 7:47 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Paul Allen isn't a divine creature or something
and do you really think they didn’t allready screw themselves by threateaning others? What is their reputation now around the league?
by buky on Jan 10, 2009 8:15 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Paul Allen isn’t a divine creature. He’s an extremely rich man, rich even beyond the normal standards of NBA owners. He’s also one of those owners who has shown that he’ll sink his own cash into a money losing proposition when he thinks that it improves his team.
I think that his people royally screwed up with their threat and trashed their reputation. Nonetheless, the tiny, tiny gain we could have experienced setting them back by making them pay into the tax this year doesn’t seem like it offsets joining the Blazers in dropping into a low-class war. Two wrongs don’t make a right. And I do think it runs risk of getting into a big dollar pissing match that we’d lose in the end. Short term thinking has screwed the Warriors over time and time again. Signing Miles would have been real short term thinking.
by jae on Jan 10, 2009 10:15 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Not only is he an extremely rich man
He’s one that is willing to spend a great deal to make his team better, in all facets.

only to screw the blazers
but otherwise no! every other team and their mother has taken a chance on him and he clearly sucks.
by HoLdEmUP on Jan 9, 2009 7:10 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
The Blazers don’t really have any ground for their threat. On the other hand, a spite signing so incredibly low-class, sub Cohan low-class I hope.
There would be retribution in the future from the Blazers organization, and possibly others in the GM community. It’s a small community and you don’t want to piss others off and show that you’re disreputable. This is key: getting into a multimillion dollar pissing match with Paul Allen is a match you’ll lose almost every time. Don’t think for a moment that he wouldn’t spend tens of millions to get us back ten times over.
If you think Miles could honestly help, it’s a reasonable move. Just to screw someone else over? Seriously low class.

What is the ‘opportunity’ that we get by signing a player who appears totally unable to help a professional team in order to piss off a division rival who has more resources, and far more likelihood that they’d use them to get even. It’s always a good idea to go make an enemy and put a target on your back when you’re the weakling in the fight. A share of their contribution to the tax revenue that won’t be all that different from what it will cost to sign Miles?
Financially, it’s a move that has negligible impact. Does it take Portland out of the FA race in 2 years? No. It simply penalizes them presently and does nothing for the Warriors. That’s a dumb way to run your franchise. Seriously, the “do it to screw the Blazers” attitude is low class, but more than that, it’s stupid. It shows the fundamental lack of anything resembling long term thinking that screws over franchises.

It was always better to let someone else call BS, because as long as someone does everyone else gets the benefit. And whoever calls BS is taking a risk.
Game theory- we get the biggest payoff if someone else does it, and with 28 other teams, someone’s probably going to do it.

blazers fan here,
just a random thought. Isn’t sjoe proposing exactly what the Blazers are objecting to? Or are you saying F what the blazers want, it’s a dog eat dog world out there? Spirit of the law, my friend, spirit of the law. But in reality, it doesn’t matter. Consider this…Portland is actually set up perfectly for the 2010 draft. RLEC comes off at the end of this year, Miles comes off at the end of next year, and the Blazers have about 40 mill to sign players with (Oden, Rudy, Bayless, Marweb will still be under contract). Would you rather have the blazers be bigtime players in that offseason, or let us do our thing in the weak 09 FA pool? Just something to think about. IDK about you, but the thought of signing BRoy, LMA and a bigtime allstar in ’10 (maybe…just maybe…LBJ), makes me salivate.

What he was saying is either the Warriors or some other team are going to sign
him to a 10 day contract play him 2 games and blow the Blazers past the salasry cap and the league is gonna send the Warriors and every other team a big fat check courtesey of the Blazers for going over the cap. Its acutally a brilliant plan.

This sounds like
It is right up Cohan and Rowell’s alley. It would be a cheesy ticket marketing scheme that they could bail on if he doesn’t pan out, and the blazers would get the shaft. Warriors should do a two for one trade, get rid of Williams, sign him for a 10 day, and if they don’t keep him then don’t sign anyone so the young guys can get some PT. Rowell gets an extra 20 days of low rent damage control, and who knows, the guy might just pan out. I say do it because the Blazers are currently a much better destination for free agents. Someone has to spoil it.

ya know, if Mullin is on his way out, maybe he could shake things up both here & in Portland
While the Celtics have been praising Darius Miles, two NBA general managers said the Blazers have been bad-mouthing the free agent forward to potential suitors. Miles was hampered by injuries and off-the-court problems during his five seasons in Portland and was waived April 14. But if he plays in 10 games over the next two seasons, the Blazers will be on the hook for $18 million in salary. Boston Globe10 day contract = stick it to the Blazers!

Why dont the Blazers sign him for the rest of the year for minimum wage and keep him on the bench.
The 2 games he needs only counts if he gets some pt.
What is the status of our petitions to fire Robert Rowell and have Chris Cohan commit Hari Kiri, or at least sell the team?
by warriorsscore110 on Jan 10, 2009 10:48 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Part of the clause of injury retirement buyouts are that you can’t take the player back without returning to the terms of the contract. I suspect that if they brought him back, it would immediately reactivate the terms of his old contract under the cap and tax rules. (Note: it has nothing to do with what Miles is being paid. He’s been collecting money from the Blazers. He gets no more from them by signing. It is entirely about how the Blazers’ tax and cap calculations deal with his salary.)
Further, if Miles wants to play again, and it seems that he actually wants to play rather than be a pawn, he wouldn’t sign with the Blazers. He is under no obligation to sign with a team simply because they make an offer. They can’t decide where he signs.
