Monta's Monster Game

I kept telling myself during Monta's absense, "He shot 60% for an entire month, as a high volume shooter. That's better than any guard has ever shot in the history of the NBA." However, as a fan of defense, I couldn't stay excited about him, no matter how many times I told myself that. I have to say, though, I am officially excited about him after last game.

Somehow, Monta looks more handsome than Curry now. What happened? via cdn.bleacherreport.com

Star-divide

At the same time, I'm trying not to get too excited. We didn't make the playoffs two years ago, and not because of a weak offense and not because of a moped. Our perimeter defense, including Monta's, has been horrendous. That is not an overstatement. But last night's win was sweet, savory goodness after the bitter pill that was Wednesday's preseason game. Monta was practically unstoppable. I can't say his defense was great, although I definitely wasn't disappointed either. I'll be watching if he keeps up the intensity on that end of the floor.

Looking at Randolph's +/-, it appears his presence made a big difference. Biedrins' rebounding was fantastic, too. We ought to not forget our  guys who compete every moment of every game. Nellie also pointed out Azubuike has been impressive defensively in practice as well. We can't win without the effort these guys put in and for which they will never get enough fan appreciation.

That said, Monta was fantastic. I am officially optimistic about him and again see how many more wins we can achieve with this speed demon, who rode out of hell on a flaming moped. Questions remain. What do we do about the fact that Monta will never be the passer that Curry is? How will the Warriors utilize their respective talents, when defensively, they're undersized and could be taken advantage of? Personally, I am not going to worry about that anymore. Let's let them play and have a very fun year with both of them entertaining and contributing, hopefully competing to outdo each other! (Unless, of course, someone makes an offer we can't refuse). Maybe Monta's offense will be so demoralizing to opponents, their overall play will diminish on both ends. Hey, ya' never know.

didn't watch first half :(

so i missed the competitive play of the 1st unit. however, it seems that spreading minutes around will allow the warriors to finally become a dangerous team that no one will want to face. NBA is the ultimate grind. you can no longer take a game off like the celtics probably did against us last season. effort and intensity is the differentiator. so, if our 2nd unit led by curry and law can continue the frenetic pace while monta and jack are on the bench, this could be an exciting brand of playoff small ball for 82 games. 10 deep rotation with defensive specialists shutting down and frustrating the big scorer on the other team like yao, nowitski, or aldridge. interestingly, last night we finally saw what nelson likes about law. if he can knock that shot down, he can get wherever he wants to on the floor.

A few thoughts

Get Jackson off the team NOW! He is a cancer, he will only bring this team down, I can’t stand to even watch him play anymore. Trade him for a new mascot and a hot dog stand, whatever just to get his sorry ass out of a warriors jersey! Monta was ridiculous! Fool can flat out score, he still knows how to rebound, and although his vision isn’t great, his athleticism does open up shots for others at times. Acie Law was very suprising. He has some handles, can drive a little, dish the rock, and it looks like he can score. Kinda makes things confusing though with CJ coming back, plus Claxton? And Curry, man its exciting to see him in a Warriors jersey! His shot doesn’t seem to be falling, although it looks like they are good shots. But, the kid knows how to play basketball, plain and simple. He’s got good handles that will only get better, his vision is there (I’m thinking of the pass from the top of the 3 point line to Mikki Moore for a nice dunk in the 3rd quarter I believe,) and he definitley tries on defense, something that can’t be said for many on this team. Add in Morrow, Randolph, Biedrins, and hopefully Wright in the future, and I think the Warriors have got themselves a nice little core. Obviously some tweaking is needed, but I am so excited for this season, it will be a lot better than last one’s, I can feel it. GO WARRIORS!

on tuesdays game we were manhandled and lacked a consistent scorer. this game shows why we signed him to that phat contract!! and why we should keep him!

Why? 8 assist 2 TO in the time he played is amazing.

If Monta hadn’t been out all last year, we wouldn’t have had the #7 pick this year. Can’t complain about that. Bygones are byegones.

I don't hate Monta

he’s my favorite player on the Warriors after Randolph, it’s just that he is not to much of a PG. Ellis is a very good player, but if he can’t be a good player as a PG and Curry continues to impress as a passer then we really shouldn’t keep him.To me either Curry or Ellis will be our future at the 1 and if Curry gets the job, there will be no place for Monta because he would be too small at 2. But if Curry is plays terrible his whole career in GS then i would be glad to keep Ellis.

He looked like a pretty damn good point guard to me, and he whooped Derek Fisher. Not to mention Fisher is a pretty solid defender.

We won that game because they weren't looking for their own shot.

If it wasn’t there they were swinging the ball. I noticed they would only take the less than 7 second shot if it was there. If it wasn’t then they would get Monta or Curry to ISO and pick n roll which is the way I like it!

Why can't we keep Monta and Curry?

i c a bunch of u guys sayin we can get rid of monta if curry is the real deal and i wonder why on earth would we want to do that? First off our offense doesn’t require a true point as much as it requires willing passers. monta’s speed can make up for his lack of true pg skills because of our style of play. now i imagine most of u feel that in crunch time they can’t play together and i can see that but if we have, ammo and buike for size at the 2 all on the team for the next 3 seasons why can’t curry be our 6th man/back up pg for the next 3 seasons. we haven’t even seen them play a month together yet some of u think we can’t win with them as a backcourt? slow up, slow up! ben gordon spent 5 years as a sixth man, i’m willing to bet curry could handle it for 3 years if needed for us to be a winning team. after this season we will know what the next move will be but lets not ruin this excitement that a curry/ellis backcourt will bring before even getting a glimpse of what it could be! Can’t wait till this season starts, it’s gonna b Fuuuuuunnnnnnn!

The issue is that Curry and Monta don’t complement one another particularly well. If the right offer comes along, moving one of them might be smart.

No it isn't

Why can’t Curry be like a Jason Terry? Ellis is a budding star and Curry will be a very solid player ,trading one just cause one can’t start is stupid.

Trading one for equal value makes sense, obviously. By definition, equal value is worth it.

What makes you think Curry will be better then Ellis?

Or that if your trading for equal value why make the trade?

You trade for equal value in individual-talent, but you try to get a player that is more complementary. If you have a great starting point guard in either Ellis or Curry and then you trade one for a player of approximately equal talent at a more needed position, you make your starting lineup that much better. Also, I never said Curry would be better than Ellis.

if your trading for equal value why make the trade?

Cause equal value doesn’t mean equal identical talents. Say we can trade Curr-bury for a big defensive capable point like Boom then we can get the best out of Montay at the 2 spot? We lose the little scoring point but enhance our 2 spot. The big and little guards might have equal value but it’s different type of skills, some other team without a Montay might need the little guy more than they need the big guy so they trade him? The other way to go would be equal value for Montay and keep Curr-bury but we’d be speculating more on that one cause we don’t know how good the little Curr will be? Say we trade Montay for a bigger 2 and maintain about the same offensive firepower but then Curr-bury turns out to be another Wright we’d be worse off?

But what you guys are saying may deprive us of a great 6th man

A big two or a big point could come in free agency, the draft, d league etc. And we could just start Morrow if we wanted a big two. I just don’t see the use in trading two young players with tons of potential. If the right offer came along then sure pull the trigger but just see how there potential fills out then make judgments on if one should stay and the other leave.

I want to see that scrappy, annoying defense drom the Warriors this year.

Where they bother the opposing ballhandler with their double teams. Similar to what was happening towards the latter part of the 2006-2007 season. They’d get beat repeatedly in one on one situations.
