Clipper fan here, giving some GSW praise
Hi guys, I'm not too famous around these parts (at least I don't think I am) so let me introduce myself. I'm TheCalmInsanity- or TCI, and I'm known to upload videos of certain highlights that NBA.com fails to upload- they don't give us much justice! Clippers have had their good and bad years, but I really have a good feeling about this year.
So enough Clipper talk, I just wanted to let you guys know that I really like this Warrior team this year. Before the game today, I was just telling my friend how GSW is a team people need to keep their eye on, and that I think they're going to make the playoffs. My friend laughed, but I know it's a big possibility. I don't care about your record last year- the past is the past.
You guys have 1 extra year of chemistry under your belt, rising stars, and future stars. Write this down and put it on your refridgerator, ANTHONY RANDOLPH IS READY TO EXPLODE. I watched a few Golden State games last year, and I immediately saw his potential. My friend in the bay area is a huge fan, and he was telling me how awesome AR is going to be. Well I kept my eye on him in the second half of the season- he was terrific.
The Clippers players have the same situation- we don't get much spotlight because we don't win as much as the other teams. You have players like Farmar on the Lakers getting recognition... Decent player, good team. Then you have other players like Morrow, Randolph, Gordon, Thornton, Jordan, who aren't getting recognition at all because of the team they're on. Heck, Gordon didn't even make All Rookie first team, but GARBAGE Michael Beasley somehow made it because everyone knew his name from the draft (I despise Michael Beasley, if any of you want my reasons I'd be glad to tell you, but that's not what this post is about).
MONTA ELLIS IS UNBELIEVABLE. Amazing talent. Hopefully not offending anyone, he needs to stay away from the media. Chemistry can make or break a team, and it's not too late for that. It's only preseason right now... If Monta can see the talent on this team, he might change his mind about talking to the media about not wanting to play with Curry.
Morrow is definitely one of the best shooters I've seen. Part of being a great shooter is being able to launch your shot whenever you want. Steve Novak is one of the deadliest shooters in the NBA, but he can't create his own shot. He relies on screens, and plays to get his 3 balls up. Morrow on the other hand, has shown me the ability to shoot virtually whenever he wants, even with a defender in his face.
Stephen Curry is my 2nd favorite rookie behind Blake Griffin. Yes yes LA bias. But Griffin works really hard and is a hell of an athlete.. His work ethic is unmatched and is adapting very quickly. I liked Curry in college alot- I couldn't believe he dropped down to #8. Great pick for you guys.
OH AND ABOUT OUR ANNOUNCERS!! No, Ralph wasn't just saying BINGO for the Warrior fans. Lol, that's a tradition of his... He's known for it. Back in the day, the Clippers had a lights out shooter named Bobby "bingo" Smith, and every time he nailed a 3 Ralph would say BINGO! And I guess it just stuck on. They're the coolest announcers period- I've met them in real life many times. They always make fun of each other on air (Ralph and Mike), and they're JUST LIKE THAT in person. I told them they were my favorite announcers, and Ralph turned and pointed at Mike, and said "him too?!" haha!
Anyways, here's to a great season, hopefully both our teams can be in the playoffs.. People underestimate us. They forget that the Warriors have such good young talent (and I'm very jealous of whoever is the radar for you guys.. Getting Azabuike UNDRAFTED and Morrow UNDRAFTED? Insane!). They also forget that the Clippers last year were mostly injured during training camp, had 13 new players and no time to develop chemistry. Throw that with an unmotivated, disappointed Baron Davis who got ditched by Elton Brand, and you get a lottery pick. At least we lucked out with the number 1 pick.
Anyways glad to meet all of you- I look forward to discussing basketball with you guys in the future! California teams stick together!!!

those announcers
thought that AR4 was 6-10. He is NOT 6-10 anymore. He is 7-0 or as close to that now..

Haha
Well they just go off what the stat sheet provides them.
Maybe AR was measured at 6"10 during training camp.. Who knows.

6'10" is pretty close to 7'0"
but he claims his 7 with shoes, and he also says he doesn’t wish to get too tall.

I'm a big BD fan
I hope he can stay healthy and get back to All-Star form. Blake Griffin and Anthony Randolph look like there gonna be fighting for rebounding titles for years to come.

Griffin looks like he’s going to be a menace. Congratulations on picking him up. Also, congratulations on Baron starting to look like an NBA player again. You guys will be a lot tougher this year.

Thanks, man.
And back at you: the Clips looked damn good. I’d put my money on them this season not only over the bad teams in the West (MEM, SAC, OKC, MIN) but also over borderline ones like HOU and PHO. Baron will be Baron — alternately dominant and maddening, depending on the opponent, time of day, weather, health, zodiac sign, etc. The wings are meh, nothing special. Gordon’s a great shooter but that’s about all; Thornton’s mediocre; Ricky Davis is garbage; Butler was lights-out last night, but has been one of the worst regular players in the NBA over the past couple of seasons. The consistent, overriding strength of the team, imo, is the four-headed beast of Camby-Griffin-Kaman-Jordan upfront. That kind of size and talent in your big men makes up for a lot of off-nights from your wings and small guys. If everything swings right for this team, I could easily imagine them winning 45-50 games right out of the gate.
Most exciting thing for you guys (and frightening thing for us) is of course Blake Griffin. He really seems to have the talent and drive to be a Top 5-10 NBA player, and in very short order. That alone should keep you a 50+ win playoff team for years to come.
Here’s to the disparaging twin-phrases “Clippers North” and “Warriors South” taking on a whole new meaning, starting this season.

I agree with your sentiment on the clippers. My only question is can dunleavy get the best out of the team? He tries to slow them down way too much. you have a great fast break point guard, and 3 young players (griffin, gordon, thorton) who could run and gun with him.
Granted not everyone needs to play like the suns and warriors, I don’t see the point in slowing them down a la san antonio.
by tafkasam on Oct 13, 2009 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with everything you said
BUT your comments on Gordon. EG is far more than just a shooter, he’s also a great penetrator, will get to the free throw line, and can dunk (i.e. barons ally oop to EG). he is also surprisingly efficient and i wouldn’t be surprised if he was an all star some day
by AtotheZ on Oct 13, 2009 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You’re right: I should have written “great scorer.” His rookie TS% (.593) was excellent for a smallish shooting guard — heck, excellent even for a big shooting guard. On the other hand, his rebounding (2.7 reb per 36), passing (2.9 ast per 36, v. 2.2 turnovers), and steal numbers (1.0 per 36) were all pretty crappy. Last night was more of the same: 2 rebounds and 3 assists in nearly 40 minutes. I’ll totally defer to your judgment on his improved D, but until futher notice I think it’s fair to call him “a great scorer but that’s about all.”
There will be no extra point!

Last season
Morrow and Novak were considered counterparts to each other. The weakness you described of Novak were also the same for Morrow, unable to do much except catch and shoot. That’s a main reason why Nellie didn’t play Morrow much during the season, because Morrow could easily be stopped. Today, we see the fruits of Morrow’s labor, because he is starting to dribble, drive, slash, etc. He has much more variety to his game than he did last season.
Those Clippers announcers were pretty good, except for that bingo thing. But since there is a history behind it, it makes it more tolerable. It’s a lot better than those stupid spoiled Lakers announcers who make fun of the Warriors by saying “When the Warriors hear the word defense, they ask, What’s that, a new dance?”
by IQofaWarrior on Oct 13, 2009 7:24 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
HAHA!
Yeah I despise the Laker announcers. Stu Lantz I can tolerate, but Joel Meyers UGH. He has a nasal, weird voice that just drives you insane and makes you want to break glass.
I like your view Sleepy Freud, but I highly recommend you watch Gordon. He’s known as a good shooter- but what set him apart from all the other rookies last year was his slashing abilities. He’s SUPER strong, gets and1’s without even trying, and dunks on people all the time. We never knew he could do that…
Another thing we didn’t know about Gordon is that he’s a lock down defender. He’s hands down the best defender on the team right now, other than Camby. We put him on all the superstar 2’s and 3’s, even though he’s only 6’3. He has a huge frame, jumps high and has incredibly long arms. I’m making a blocks mix for him- Ever since his high school days, I noticed he’s very good at blocking shots. I have some footage of his blocked shots that you’ve probably never seen before.
Anyways… Gordon was averaging 22 ppg after the All Star break. I’m pretty sure that alone can show you he’s better than just a shooter. He also worked on his mid range and post up game ALL SUMMER and it looks great so far.

Yeah...
When I was a kid I was a Laker fan.
Even as a kid I recognized arrogance and spoiled fans.. It pissed me off to such great heights that I gave up on the Lakers altogether, even if they were winning. I started watching Jason Kidd (who is still one of my favorite players). One game, New Jersey played against the Clippers, and this was during the Darius Miles, Q-rich days. I noticed that although the Clippers had a horrible record, they were a fun team to watch. Being a Nets fan back then, I realized I could watch barely any Nets games since they’re not televised in LA. Well, DING DING, seeing the Clippers, I saw a team NOT NAMED THE LAKERS that is televised here in LA, and since then it’s been a perfect fit.
Back to Laker fans. Just because they’re the fans of the champions doesn’t make them better people than us. Actually it makes them worse- fans like us, who stay with their teams through thick and thin, are real fans. It shows our commitment and loyalty. However, they act like the other teams don’t even have a right to exist in the same league as the Lakers, and what not. Oh and they lose one playoff game and tirade on all the forums. TRADE ____, HE SUCKS. I HATE MY LIFE. WORST LAKER GAME I’VE EVER WATCHED. ____ SHOULD BE FIRED. Just stuff like that, they make everything over dramatic since they’re not used to losing. If they lose too much? They jump off the bandwagon. I’ve never once given up on the Clippers after becoming a fan.

It's a cryin' shame
I loved that team. If they hadn’t been totally jobbed by the refs in the ’03 Western Conference finals, they would have taken the Nets apart in the finals, and we would view them now in a totally different light. They would have been one of those fascinating champions that people discuss and analyze and dissect when they think about “alternative” ways to build a championship team. Instead, Shaq and Kobe absconded with the rings … and the only interesting lessons to be drawn from that are:
1. Superstars win championships.
2. Franchise big men win championships.
3. If you play in a big media market, you can bilk smaller market teams out of their superstars and franchise big men.
4. If you play in a big media market, you’re marginally more likely than a small-market team to get “friendly” officiating.
5. The Lakers suck.
There will be no extra point!
by Sleepy Freud on Oct 13, 2009 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But lets be fair, in 2003...
Chris Webber was a Superstar and a franchise big man (if u consider a PF a big man). 23 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 5.4 APG?!
-Peja was a 2 time all star (at that point).
-Vlade was a former all star and still a well above average center,
-Mike Bibby was a budding star
-Doug Christie was a very good defender
and a cast of great role players who understood there jobs.
The one thing I loved about this team more than anything is there PASSING. One of best passing teams I’ve seen. It always made me so sad, because Webber should have been doing that in GSW.
One thing I should say is, Rick Adelman really doesn’t get the respect he deserves. He is probably 1 of the top 2 or 3 coaches.
