To keep or not to keep pt. 2 - Broken Wing

We were ready for him to breakout! He was having a great training camp and was dominating. He put on muscle all summer in chapel hill! Then he's out for the year. And it has left us very thin at the four and now we seem to be actively looking for one ever since. As you know Brandan Wright had an option this year that we picked up and we are confident that he will be back. But is it to early to call him injury prone? No. But he is certainly showing many signs of it. Out of college Wright showed tons of potential but was very raw and needed to add muscle. He has shown signs of brilliance like his game against the 76ers or the game against the Nuggets and other times he has looked lost and was dominated buy bigger guys. He had below average rebounding numbers even though he had an impressive PPG per 48 minutes and a lot of blocks. He also rarely commits a turnover and plays smart with an improving jumper. But should we be patient with him or get a replacement for him? Can we wait another year for this guy to rejoin the squad since this roster is one capable backup big of being in playoff contention ( I stress contention)?

The dynamic duo to be? Or the once to be?

Currently I'm on the side of keeping  him and giving him one more year to prove himself. It's clear that Randolph is most likely the future power forward with Wright as a key role player but don't discount Wright starting at the four because of how good he gets forcing us to have both on the floor making Anthony Randolph the three. But if Wright's shoulder is never the same or he does become injury prone we should look for a replacement. Next year he will be on the hot seat and he needs to improve consistency and his rebounding , but his future looks bright. You just have to wonder what is going through his head. I was going to get traded to Phoenix, then I work my butt off all summer and dominate during training camp, Jack wants to be traded, Monta's comments are blown out of proportion, then I'm out for the year leaving my team thin up front. Maybe I should have stayed in school...

One down one to go?

Poll
It's the 2010 NBA draft and the Warriors had a solid year but end up in the lottery and luck out with a top 5 pick.Do you take a power forward with a high ceiling if Wright's recovery is going better then expected? (ex. Greg Monroe, Derrick favors etc.)
Yes! More young bigs for me

I voted No

but what I mean is, you take the best player available. The Warriors will know by then where they have the most need, but right now they have guys who are “solid to good” everywhere, with the exception of PG ans PF where they are “slightly below average to all-star.” I expect that we’ll only see improvement this year, allowing us to select the most talented player available to us, regardless of position.

Wright and AR are both 4’s….

Welcome to the Warriors, Stephen Curry, the 2009 NBA Rookie of the Year.

Panda's and Curry in the Bey Area. Who would've known?

I voted no because ideally we want Randolph at the 4. I’m not opposed to Randolph playing the 3 if he develops some outside skills and we have a really good 4 to pair him with, but I think the best use of Randolph is at the 4….

I think Wright can go berzerk working on his lower body strength. He might turn out to be a good center.

Monta/Curry
Azubuike/Morrow/Jackson
Jackson/Maggette/Randolph
Randolph/Wright/Turiaf
Biedrins/Turiaf/Wright

Wright is a backup at best

Just hope the guy comes back healthy, and thank your owner for picking up his optionm, you know.. the same owner that everyone slaps around in here every chance they get?

No one would pick this guy up right now, severely damaged goods. A 4 with a BUSTED shooting shoulder? LOL. Yeah, welcome to being DONE.

But Chris Cohan still found a way to pay him 2+ million this year to sit at home and rehab.

TERRIBLE OWNER.

TERRIBLE.

He is only terrible because he is a good person.

Oh and it doesnt matter what he does, this is Randolph’s team. Again, just hope he comes back healthy,

Brandan Wright is 21 years old. He could be going into his senior year of college right now. He’s also long and athletic, and has been productive in the playing time he’s received in the NBA so far. .574 TS%. 8.7 rebounds/36 isn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be. 16 points per 36. 2 blocks per 36, 1 steal and only 1.2 turnovers.

No one would pick this guy up right now, severely damaged goods.

Right now, for this season, no team would pay him because he isn’t playing this year. He’s still on his rookie contract – so our decision to pay him this season was made 3 years ago. As for next season, every single team in the league, if they had the option to sign Brandan Wright for $2M, would say yes to that. Our owner and organizational leadership suck, sure, but this decision was a no brainer. They got this one right.

Someone heard Nellie criticize Wright’s rebounding. While it’s not a strength of his game, that criticism got translated in the minds of many as “Wright’s a terrible rebounder” without actually paying attention to whether or not it was true.

So true. Also, so disagree with the post to which you’re responding. Brandan will definitely start at some point, assuming he can stay healthy.

This is ridiculous…I dnot need to recount all the mistakes made with the contracts in the Cohan era, you all know them….this is just one more to throw on teh pile.

Wright has not done anything to show he is more valuable than a dozen other players out there who would make similar money. Why take the option now? We pay him for nothing and what if he is garbage again next year?! Even if he is great next year, his great isnt going to be so high that he cant be replaced.

This FO is a joke of biblical proportions

See my comment above. To be blunt about it, you’re completely and utterly wrong on this issue.

If we did not pay him, we are not given a 1 for 1 replacement on his salary to get one of those other dozen players, nor would we have any clout to lure any of those dozen players.

If he’s garbage next year (you errantly said “again”, but he hasn’t been garbage in the past ; his on court time has been reasonably productive) it’s one year, at a salary that isn’t going the difference between us being able to make a move or not.

I see “BrokenWing” has now found its way into diary titles? Awesome. I have to say, of all Skeptic’s great nicknames, this seems the most likely to have legs. I love the vaguely Native American vibe. Perfectly captures the tragi-comic plight of the brave young Warrior with the funny face…

Now as for “I’zaBlueKitty…”

There will be no extra point!
