OPEN THREAD: Preseason Game #6 - Warriors @ Kings - Best part of Sacramento?

Golden State Warriors at Sacramento Kings, Oct 17, 2009 7:00 PM PDT

Forget about the Kings.  Let's start talking about their mayor.

Ya, that's right - MAYOR JOHNSON!

WARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGE.

Warriors (Preseason W-L) - 3-2

Kings (Preseason W-L) -0-3

Blog Buddy: Sactown Royalty

Tip-Off: 7:00 PM PST

TV: None

Radio: KNBR 680

Star-divide

The Kings?  They drafted Tyreke Evans

Tyreke-evans-nba-draft_medium

He don't look so friendly.

The Warriors?  We took Stephen Curry.

India-cafe-lamb-masala_medium

He looks tasty.

The Kings? The picked up Sean May.

May-fat_medium

He's not ACTUALLY this big, is he?

The Warriors?  We picked up Mikki Moore.

Nba_dailydime_395_medium

...intense.

The Kings?  They got Mayor Johnson.

101c0f94b06c8fa37c5d8a9c15eedbdb_medium

How did he dunk on Hakeem the Dream?
The Warriors?  They got Don Nelson.

Nelson_200_greatestfinals_medium

Not so smooth yo.

By my count, that leaves the Warriors > Kings - only KJ gives them any points in the battle.

R Dizzle's Predictions

  • Warriors by 2.
  • Ammo with 20 - makes a good argument for the starting 2 position.
  • Monta vs. Kevin Martin - win Kevin Martin.
  • Curry picks up his FG% (maybe that's just wishful thinking)
  • Nobody really cares about this game.

Kmart beats Ellis?

Wow, Kmart is very overrated and Ellis is underrated by haters. (cough cough). Any links on justintv?

You need to put down the pipe, you have had too much and you are getting dizzy

Kmart is very good and Ellis has done nothing. Kmart has allstar skills and Ellis is just another player on a bad GS team. Least you can do is give props where they are due. Bush league of you to downplay Kmart’s skills and pump up Ellis. At least Kmart doesn’t get injured in freak off season activities and then lie about it. Ellis will be a fine player in time, but Kmart IS a fine player.

Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

Screwed up economy. Many teams are not televising their preseason game this year.

I guess it’s harder to line up advertising for a preseason game than it is regular season. It looks like the Kings and Warriors are not the only teams not televising even one preseason game. All of the small market teams are just not televising their preseason games. Even some of the big market teams are only showing one or 2. LA and NY are showing all their games but they always have. Feels like

He fits in with the Kings better is partly why

But, it’s not like Anthony Randolph didn’t do much tonight either. He was okay. He just didn’t have that gaudy stat line JT had (20/20). Of course, Randolph played 24 mins and JT 40 so that plays a part too.

Randolph has a bandage on his finger and seemed to be in pain early in the game. He may have been more tentative. I know, when my finger hurts, I cry like a little girl and often just curl up into fetal position, getting no rebound at all. Seriously, though, that could be a factor this game.

Ellis’ off game and poor shooting as a team were the problem.

It seems to me poor shooting will sink the Dubs

But that’s an outsider. The Kings have their own problems.

Exactly. He had 17 shot attempts. If he had 17 points for those attempts, we would have won. For Ellis, that wouldn’t normally be a problem.

And Curry 7th. Curry seems like he’s going to be a player when he adjusts though. He has NBA skills.

Watson had a terrible game

27mins, 2-7shooting, 4 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 3 turnovers, 3 fouls

That’s a lot of minutes with nothing good to show for it. Hope he gets back into the swing of things in Ontario.

not the best matchup...

for any of the Warriors frontcourt, except maybe Jackson & Morrow if you play them at the 2. Still, they can handle it. Just didn’t get it done tonight.

the biggest difference I noticed

Was how badly the Dubs got killed on the boards tonight. That was a steep departure from season’s past. If that’s true, the Kings will not be getting killed night in/out (thankfully) on the boards as they had recently.

Not 17 more

The Kings just were better on the boards tonight for whatever reason. (I"m not really sure why.)

It’d be one thing if Sac shot 35% and GS shot 50%. I could see that. But not when you miss a lot of shots, and make more than your opponent? That’s called getting out-rebounding. I was shocked to see the differential, but if I had to guess, I would suspect that’s partly because Randolph didn’t play his full contingent of min’s he might otherwise play.

Still, the differential was pretty consistent throughout the game even when Randolph played.

I attribute it mostly to the overall lack of Andris and Randolph. Andris did fine for himself, but he didn’t get as many as he should.

by Reverend_Randy on Oct 17, 2009 10:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah that could be it

I think it’s a combination of that and the Kings are now a better rebounding team in contrast to years past. I didn’t expect it this soon to be honest, but I’ll take it.

Kevin Johnson over Don Nelson?

I don’t get that all. Nelson has meant so much to this franchise for decades!!! Kevin Johnson was a point guard at Cal and, imho, that’s about the only thing he has going for him.

Also, KJ has a pretty checkered past in terms of the way he treats women.

Lastly, he was elected for the same reason Arnold was; i.e., an electorate that prefers famous people to qualified public servants.

When Monta starts missing shots the team starts losing fast. Nelson is going to need a quick trigger to get Monta out unless he can figure out a way to get him to stop shooting when he’s lost it. Some may disagree, but I think the warriors have more than enough firepower that they don’t need to let Monta shoot out of slumps.

Nellie says Monta needs a week

when Monta has his legs under him, conditioning-wise, his jumper is consistent. nellie says his condition is a week behind the rest of the team.

having said that – i’m a BIG proponent of trading Monta. If he can start the season averaging 20ppg, i’d package him Jackson and next years 1st round pick for a strong 4. Chris Bosh?

Monta, like Jack is not good for flow. especially now that he thinks he’s the s—t. when he gets the ball he acts like the lights are on and its turn to take a shot. he’s def shoot first.

by joegiant on Oct 18, 2009 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Ugh.

Incredibly deflating game all-around, huh? KMart was miles better than Monta or Morrow; Tyreke was better than Curry; Thompson was miles better than Randolph; heck Spencer freaking Hawes was better than Biedrins. That’s basically the entire heart of our team, totally crushed by one of the few teams in the league to whom we presumed ourselves superior. Meanwhile, the two overpaid swingmen who we all want shipped out of town scored over half of our total points.

Yeah, one pre-season game … but if this is any indication of all of what we have to look forward to this season, I may have to start averting my gaze. Here’s hoping Kelenna and Ronny bring a little fire when they return, and that the five aforementioned kids come to practice today p*ssed off and ready to kick *ss.

There will be no extra point!

Don’t think it’s that big a deal, Sacto was probably more interested in playin than our boys were. We got more work to do and that’s more important than our preseason numbers. Sacto does sound like they could be one of the most improved team this season. I don’t think I’d panic and trade Montay and Rudolf for KMart and Tompson just yet , they might be good but I think our two guys have more upside. I probably would trade Curr-bury for Evans though. I got a feeling sacto is gonna wear down before the season ends and maybe our boys will be getting stronger as it progresses?

Couldn't have said it any better

While I love the upside of Randolph, Curry, and Morrow, that upside is not going to keep us in games where inevitable mismatches put us behind the eight-ball from the beginning. Evans and Thompson are though for the Warriors for different reasons. Evans is just physically too much for our backcourt and Thompson is too polished for our frontcourt. Thompson had 16 of those boards in the first half!! His positioning and passing (5 assists!) were on a different level than ARand. Total domination.

…..

Maggette is the kind of player that keeps you in these kinds of games. He’s high percentage from the floor and line. We hate the contract but we really need his efficiency and ability to spot in the frontcourt and board.

…..

There are new murmurs on realgm.com that Cleveland is renewing interest in Jackson without concern for his contract. Interesting, make no mistake about it, we will probably struggle the remainder of this season if he goes.

by eastbayglory on Oct 18, 2009 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Kings fan who was at the game here

You can see my recap over at SactownRoyalty. Jackson was the only player that was able to limit Evans penetration a little bit. But this still left a matchup problem elsewhere on the court, in this case, Curry on Martin.

Ellis was dominated by Evans, on both sides of the court. Ellis only had one drive where he wasn’t stuffed by Evans or had a hand in his face. 3 of Ellis’ field goals came against Beno Udrih as midrange jumpers in the 2nd half.

Surprised Turiaf didn’t play, he might have helped against JT a little bit.
