Best Broadcasting Team for the Warriors is ________?
After listening to the Kings game I felt that there was some really good chemistry between Roye, who announces games on radio, and Jim Barnett, one of the two TV broadcasters. For those who don't know the other TV broadcaster is Bob Fitzgerald. Before I get started ripping into Fitz I want to be clear that Bob Fitzgerald is not the problem. He is a product of the problem. A waste product. That in and of itself is A problem, but he is by no means the source of THE SUCK. You'd think from the way Warriors' PR smells that no one taught Cohan to flush.
via www.nba.com
I have always been a big fan of Fitz's colleague "Mr. Two-for-one" Jim Barnett. Barnett's time away from playing basketball has not dulled his knowledge or understanding of the game in the least. Rather it has translated to very insightful and patient (I'll get back to this) analysis of the Warriors and their opponents. The players like him and it shows in the interviews and especially the pre-game. Barnett is like the uncle that married into the family after you already grew up, but he turns out to be really cool. I can't think of another person I would rather have doing the broadcast.
Then there's this guy.
I find Bob Fitzgerald to be sophomoric and annoying. On his radio show Fitz regularly berates callers with valid opinions and avoids talking about the Warriors unless the discourse is strictly controlled. Fitz especially avoids taking calls about the Warriors. Instead he crutches on the annoying habit of speaking with Warriors interns and staff. Any way that he spins it his stoic optimism reflects like the sun off Chris Cohan's hood ornament, and stinks of mediocrity.
Did I mention that he also includes advertisements in his drawn out, praise-enthused, blinder-wearing interview questions?
Notre Dame established a Latino Studies Research Collaborative. You may be wondering why I brought that up. Now you know how I feel every time I accidentally listen to Fitzgerald and he eschews Notre Dame homerism as if he was preaching a gospel sermon.
Barnett regularly disagrees with him and opts to keep his mouth shut. This is usually noted by an awkward pause after some of Fitz's misplaced optimism. You can also witness these awkward pauses during the Warriors' defensive lapses where Barnett simply doesn't want to rain on Fitz's parade. Regardless, Fitz actually competes with the likes of Robert Rowell and Ray Ridder for biggest tool. Riley is a turnstile.
via www.nba.com
I like Tim Roye. He can talk fast and straight as an arrow. His radio work is superb and his knowledge of the players far surpasses Fitzgerald's. I'm really not going to say much other than he should have Fitz's job. He did a great job with Barnett the other night.
So here's the poll:

Tim Roye is definitely better suited for the radio in my opinion. I love Bob Fitzgerald and Jim Barnett on television. I think they work great together.

Roye’s voice is definitely more suited to radio, but I think he would be a better broadcaster than Fitz.

The only thing I can remember about that game is
my friend was sitting in some good sideline seats and left early to beat the traffic! I make it my personal duty as a friend to remind him of that everytime I see the clip.
Now that I think of it, maybe I’ve heard Roye but I can’t remember what he sounds like on TV.

hahaha!
I completely forgot that that game involved a big comeback by the Warriors before the game winning shot. The arena was almost emptying because people thought the game was over for the warriors. I remember on tv, FSN had some type of “statistical chances of winning the game” type of thing; it popped up and said that the Warriors had low odds of winning the game but they did anyways.

I like his voice and I think he does a good job of calling the games. I enjoy his commentary and he has great chemistry with Jim Barnett.

Re: Papa versus Kuiper
Glen is the worst play-by-play guy in the 20+ years I’v been an A’s fan. He brings ZERO to the table. He’s dull, and knows less about the team than anybody you could randomly pull out of an AN game thread.
For the A’s it’s always been 1. Bill King, 2. Greg Papa and 3. Ken Korach. Lon Simmons never did anything for me. I’d take John Miller (who’s great) over him and I hate the Giants.
Vince Controneo is just disgraceful, he sounds like he’s simultaniously panicing and going through puberty when making big calls.

If you like male cheerleaders I guess you would? That radio guy did ok on the kings game so I’d be fine with him. I like announcers to tell me what they see not what they would like to see. If the team sucks the announcer should be good enough to recognize it before I do or why pay him?

I like Bob Fitzgerald better.
He has more energy and shows a ton of enthusiasm and excitement when the Warriors are playing well. He also says a lot of random things to sweeten up the commentary instead of just staying strictly to basketball terms.
Tim Roye on the other hand is too calm and is better suited as a radio guy (which isn’t a bad thing). I don’t want to hear two old guys (Tim and Jim) broadcasting our Warriors games at the same time, it would get too boring. Bob helps compliment Jim better and vise versa.
If possible, it would be great to have all three broadcasting like how they do on ESPN and TNT. That would be even better! But yeah, I think people complain too much. If you’ve ever heard announcers of teams like the Cavs, Spurs, Lakers, Celtics etc. you’ll start to appreciate Bob Fitzgerald.

A lot of the good team’s have biased broadcasters, too. Bob and Jim are also biased, but they the difference is that they also love other teams and players’ as well. They sometimes spend a lot of time talking about how great another team/player/coach is.

MC Hammer and Jim Barnett?
That would be an interesting combo to say the least. Seriously though, the Warriors have a pretty good announcer in Jim Barnett, and a rather mediocre one in Bob Fitzgerald. I grew up around LA broadcasts, so I have to say that Chick Hearn (Lakers) was a great announcer, while Stu Jackson has always been awful, and is now their head announcer. Bill Walton was ridiculous for the Clippers. I havn’t really heard any other NBA announcers on the local level.

Bad Memories!
I was so pissed off by this, not because I care about whether or not Fitz screwed him, but because Papa was perfect as a Warriors broadcaster and perfectly paired with Barnett. It didn’t help that Fitz was terrrrrible in his first several years to the point where I just listened to the games on the radio. He’s become much better, but still sounds silly when calling the most exciting plays.
In Fitz’s defense, his in-game analysis and is excellent at that for a play-by-play guy. Also, I don’t understand the outrage at his homerism. If some franchise pays you to do your dream job, are you going to be critical of them in public? That’s just career suicide. We can all judge for ourselves, it’s not like we need a 300th voie telling us how f’d up the organization is. The hopeless optimists of the world need a voice too.

Wouldn’t mind Tolbert replacing Barnett. Barnett is just to stiff in his approach and sometimes sounds like he is lecturing the audience. Also, as someone mentioned before, his analysis of each jump ball is quite annoying!
As for Fitz, isn’t the job of the announcers to be homers? Even Bob Uecker had to be in “Major League” (not real, but still, he could have played it a different way.) I like Fitzgeralds enthusiasm and think it would be a better TV broadcast if he had someone livelier to feed off of.
As for poor Tim Roye, won’t happen that he gets the nightly TV duties…….Too ugly for TV!

radio coverage is decent with Roye and Barnett
When the quality of the hoops on the court sinks to the level of last season, or the seasons preceding Nelson’s un-retirement, the time spent watching is a waste and it makes little difference who describes the debacles. I’ve listened to too much of Fitz’s mid-day radio show and have little tolerance for his superficial, hype-the-home boys routine. Sticking to the radio liberates me to attend to necessary tasks instead of staring at commercials; if the team plays better this season, unless they’re on espn or tnt I’ll turn the audio off on the telly.

I don’t think you get the zen of this warrior fan thing? We religiously watch the television broadcasts to prove that they can’t hurt us no matter how bad they play. The more they suck the stronger our armor grows so in the end we are the real winners. Radio listeners don’t get the full impact of having it burned into their eyeballs as well as their ears so the rewards are less.

I think Roye would be better on TV
He has to have a certain style on the radio because you cant see the game. Putting him on TV with Barnett would allow him to loosen up and make Fitz look like an amateur.
I would like to see Barnett and Tolbert go at it a couple times to see how the chemistry is. I have a feeling they would be relaly fun to listen to after seeing Tolbert on ESPN a few times.

"Platitude" Jim & "No-integrity" Bob... no thanks
Fitz is the definition of the company man. Just slinging the product is all he’s doing. Brother has absolutely no soul. I’m embarrassed to be a sports fan watching his shtick sometimes. Just a reminder of how much control the corporate salesmanship culture has over the sporting world.
And Barnett… he may be fun to laugh at once in awhile but please. The dude spits out platitudes like it’s nobody’s business…
Let’s raise the bar here a little bit folks. This is the Bay after all, we’ve got one of the best announcers around in John Miller. With Roye you’re barking up the right tree. At least dude brings some intellectual integrity to the table. Bring G. Papa back & you’ve got a nice pair…

Honestly
I love listening to Fitzgerald on Warrior broadcasts, but cannot abide the mid day show: he a Rod Brooks so rarely actually say anything that was worth the effort it took to say it. They get along, yeah, but I don’t find it either entertaining or enlightening. It’s too bad, because I like their personalities (as long as they keep it G-rated.) Then again, I don’t like talk radio much to begin with and the amount of commercials played per hour is unbearable. I’m not sure anyone is talented enough to overcome that.
I used to really enjoy Fitz in the time slot that Damon Bruce handles now. I like guys who are always looking on (or at least for) the bright side, even if there is a lot to not be happy about. D. Bruce’s hammering on the Giants for not signing Ramirez for half the season got old (he’s right that the Giants need bats, and their free agent signings were, um… not encouraging, but how many times do I have to listen to you complain about the same old thing?) I’ve never heard Fitz do that and I am grateful for it.

Papa and Barnett...
I agree with you nuck, fitz is just too much now and full of himself. I used to like him but at this point he is just annoying because of his blatant disregard in addressing the warrior issues which has really colored my judgement of him as an announcer. It just seems as if he has gotten more “homerish” than ever now. I think a couple years back he was a little less bias but at this point now he is tunring into a Hawk Harrelson (Whitesox Announcer).
yes he can be exciting but I just don’t like how he has passed off the company line and always skirts issues about the warriors which basically has killed any likability that he may have had.
Barnett is the man for me and I always feel like I learn something new when I listen to him. Don’t get me wrong I’ve listened to some of the other announcers around the league and we do have a couple of the best but Fitz’s recent hardline about neva discussing the warrior issues on his show is just ridiculous….So Fitz is dead to me and Barnett RULES!!!

BILL KING!!!!
Guys, it’s not even close.
I wasn’t even born yet, but I was able to find some play by play of the Warriors 1974-75 Championship Run and there was NO ONE BETTER THAN BILL KING!!!!!
Seriously, this man just did not get enough credit, and I cried when he died suddenly from a pulmonary embolism. he was the ultimate professional. if Lon Simmons got into the Hall of Fame of Broadcasting, then Bill King deserved it in not only one, but THREE sports! If there was play-by-play for chess, the whole bay area would be die-hard chess fans! If you have never heard Bill King do basketball play-by-play, I strongly suggest you find him on youtube. He was THE BEST! Those here in LA (where I unfortunately live) who think that Chick Hearn was the best have NO IDEA.
Now I grew up as a Warrior Fan in the 80s and I think that Greg Papa comes a VERY CLOSE second. He seemed just as knowledgeable and spontaneous as King. Everyone else since then has been annoying, although I do respect Roye more and more.
But Bill King forever. May he rest in peace.

Fitz...
For some reason I like this guy less and less as the years go by. I wouldn’t mind if he was replaced, but every time I watch another teams broadcast I’m reminded that it could be worse.
As for Barnett, I still find him amusing despite the fact that I already know everything he is going to say during the course of a game.
I think Roye does an excellent job on the radio side. As someone who barely ever listens to a game on the radio (I’m usually rushing home to catch the game on my DVR and don’t want to hear the score) I’d like it if Roye came over to the TV side. He has a great voice. Of course if you paired him with Barnett on TV it might be a little dull. Tolbert would be great, but I don’t think he wants to travel that much.
Oh well, like I said it could be worse.
