Rotation Sensation!
Now that the preseason is officially over, I wanted to get a thread going on what starting lineups and rotations everyone thinks will be most effective this year.
First, some background reading, with comments from Nellie regarding the starting lineup:
However, if history is any indication, Nelson's comments about starting lineups should be taken with a grain of salt. He is one of the most fickle coaches in the league (maybe of all time), and you can be guaranteed he will continue to tinker with the lineup all season. In 3 years as head coach of your Golden State Warriors he's used 35 (06-07), 23 (07-08), and 47 (08-09) DIFFERENT starting lineups. As a footnote, with 15 healthy players, there are actually
( 15! / ( 5! * (10 - 5)! ) ) = 3003 possible starting lineups, and you know Nellie will consider each and every one of them.
My vote for the most effective rotation is:
PG: Monta / Curry / Watson
SG: Jack / Morrow / Curry
SF: Magette / Buike / Law
PF: Randolph / Turiaf
C: Biedrins / Moore
PINE: George, Claxton
With a minor tweak against teams with big front lines, like Utah:
PG: Monta / Curry / Watson
SG: Jack / Morrow / Curry
SF: Randolph/ Buike / Law
PF: Turiaf / Magette
C: Biedrins / Moore
As usual, this year's Warriors team is guard-heavy and lacks size. BWright would have given us a lot more depth at the 4. I expect see Nelson trot out 3-PG lineups all year long: Monta + Curry + Law or Monta + Curry + Watson, until we get demolished on the boards.
As the great Tim Roye would say: It's going to be a Rotation Sensation!
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Once Wright is back, that should be an awesome rotation
And Law is surprisingly looking pretty good so far…

Law looked pretty bad in Summer League, but he’s starting to come around now. I agree he’s been surprisingly consistent in preseason, but he’s going to have to do a bit more if he’s going to get more minutes as a “small point forward”.

WRIGHT
Is not coming back this season. He had a labral repair. That’s 6 months before he can play at all. No way no how is he playing this year.

"small point forward"
is actually a quote from Don Nelson, from an interview with Tim K. yesterday.

Start Curry!
We should start Curry off the bat. He clearly makes the team better when he is on the floor distributing the ball. Move Ellis to the 2 and Jax to the 3 and we’ve got a pretty good starting five with some fire power coming off the bench.

I agree that Curry makes the team better. The only problem with starting him is that he plays off of Morrow so well, that you’d ideally like them in the game together. If you assume Monta and Jack are going to start, that’s 4 guards. That’s how I got to Monta/Jack/Mags/Randolph/Biedrins starting with Curry/Morrow/Buike/Turiaf/Moore as the second unit.

hmm.
I liked the Turiaf + AB lineup against the Lakers. Gobbling up rebounds is always fun!
I hope we don’t see too much CJ and Monta on the court. CJ should be getting minutes as a backup 2.
I love the Nellie quotes about Curry. He says when they drafted him, he envisioned Steve Nash. He saw a player who could put up 20-10 numbers. Say what you want about Nellie as a coach, but the guy certainly has an eye for talent. This gives me a lot of confidence in Curry going forward.

I told Randolph that Bill Russell would tell him to keep that ball in play and start the break.

CJ
Should not be getting minutes at the backup 2. Morrow should get those minutes. Morrow is a better rebounder, a better defender (not saying much), and a better scorer. CJ is our 3rd or 4th point guard (I like Acie Law much more as a PG) and should only be getting 10-12 minutes per night.
I like this:
Curry/Law/CJ…Giving Monta time as well
Monta/Morrow/Buike
Jack/Maggs/Buike
Turiaf/Randolph
Biedrins/Moore

as a backup 2
As A backup 2, not THE backup 2. I do indeed believe Morrow need, need, needs more minutes on the court, whether he starts or is the 6th or 7th man.
Law isn’t being groomed as a Nellie PG. He’s preparing for minutes as a Point-Forward. He’s expected to play the 3 spot. I’’m guessing that leaves CJ as a backup PG, but for I’d rather see him play more off the ball. He’s a good finisher in the lane and a good spot up 3pt shooter. As a 2, his lack of playmaking skills isn’t as much of a concern. But can he guard larger 2’s?? That’s the remaining Q for me.

really? you liked that lineup?
I mean that could potentially be a good lineup, and they did get a lot of rebounds, but they were getting killed on the scoreboard

When Monta is the point
I like this:
Monta
Morrow
Buike
Randolph
Biedrins
Lots of running, two great shooters to space the floor and give Monta kick out opportunities, and actually what might be our best rebounding lineup.

I like it.
When Morrow is in there, you’re going to need another good wing defender out there. Presuming that Jack is traded at some point this year, that would leave Kelenna as our best wing defender. Stick Kelenna on the opponents best wing player and have Morrow not worry as much against another scorer.

I would also not mind seeing
Monta
Morrow
Kelena
Turiaf
Biedrins
Against big teams like the Lakers, Cavs, Spurs, Celtics, Magic. We need rebounding in games like that or we’ll get killed on the boards. Plus I like that we could bring Maggette and Randolph off the bench to spark some energy into the game. Curry also off the bench would be a great asset. Nellie has also stated that he could play the Monta-Curry backcourt against 16 teams in the league. That might force us into this:
Curry
Monta
Kelena
Randolph or Turiaf
Andris
This leaves us thin at PG depth, but we have some good wings with CJ, Morrow, Maggette or Law IV. We’re thin up front however. Man Brandan’s injury hurts us.

That's a good call
But I think our best rebounding front line is the one Nellie used vs. the Lakers: Randolph, Turiaf, Biedrins.

Let's face it....
Monta is not a point. He will ALWAYS be a 2 guard. If you want the most out of Monta, play him where he is comfortable. We can start Watson at the point then slowly bring Curry along. hopefully Curry can be a starter after 10 games when he gets his feet wet

Most rotations consist of 8 to 9 players. I would prefer a big man rotation with Turiaf, Big Ant & Goose – with Maggette/Jack filling in during the eventual foul trouble. SF, Maggette & Buike. SG Jack, Lil Ant, Monta. PG Monta, Curry. 9 man rotation 10-12 DNPs CJ, Law, Moore. Inactives Speedy, George.
Unlikely though. Monta really needs to be at the 2 spot in order to maximize his strengths and minimize his weaknesses. Nelson is probably going to want to get CJ & Law some PT. and he likes to tinker and play to match ups.

I am talking mainly about the times when Curry and Monta are not on the floor together...
Monta can handle the point. Jim explained it perfectly last night: Monta’s point game is predicated on driving to the hoop. If the little man collapses, you kick it out. If a big man rotates, you dish it off. If nobody comes, Monta will beat his defender to the rack 80% of the time. It isn’t rocket science. Curry is certainly looking to be a better overall playmaker with his court vision and passing ability, but if you put Monta on the court with Ammo, Buike, Biedrins and Randolph (shooters and bigs who can do a little bit to create for themselves, he can be successful.)
Curry certainly deserves lots of time at the one, but given his skill set and his ability to make plays, I’d put him in mainly with guys like Maggette (good scorer who can’t be trusted to handle the ball much), Turiaf and Moore (bigs who can drop a J but really have little to offer in the post or off the dribble).
We have to accept that Monta and Curry will not be able to play together against most of the first teams in the NBA (with a few exceptions). Their time together will come mainly against 2nd units and teams without a beefy guard.

Watson irrelevant
Trade Watson for 2nd rounder. Then that 2nd rounder, Claxton, and Moore to NJ for Tony Battie – positions not necessarily in order of playing time: 1:Curry/Ellis/Law/Jackson 2. Ellis/Morrow/Azebuike/Jackson 3.Jackson/Maggette/George/Azebuike 4.Randolph/Battie/Turiaf/DLeaguer 5. Biedrins/ Turiaf/ Battie/ Dleaguer
