The Nelly Maggette Love Affair
in my humble opinion, it all boils down to Nelly, not our current talent, that will put us in more risk of another losing season. That stubborn old man makes Tom Cable-esq decisions and doesn,t think outside the box like he once did. He has been steadily out coached the last two games, and shoots his own team in the foot with the blatant man crush he has for Corey "muck it all up" Maggette.
Pleaaase, dont leave Corey out on the floor more than you do randolph. plain & simple, who cares if Corey was a beast in pre season, this aint pre season any more!! Sure, randolph looked lost in the final 5 minutes of the game, when all was a wash. He was missing shots, shooting off balanced shots, and being a bit out of conrtrol. But in the early portions of the game, he active on the glass, pushing the ball, moving without the ball and looking livley, he showed good effort. He's a better finisher around the bucket, and can make better adjustments going at a high momentum than corey can.
So sometime in the first quarter, corey comes in for Ant, and his first play is an offensive foul charge running into some suns trying to get a foul call. On our very few fast breaks, he did not once look to pass it, and bricked some shots. He stayed on the floor the whole entire portion of the game, and mucked it all up, killing our tempo, our possessions, and just doing more harm than good. Why does it even matter if AR starts if he gets yanked after 7 minutes of above average play. If thats the case, let corey start at PF, and play AR most of the minutes, let the kid grow into it.
Even Eddie Johnson, the Suns color commentator said he wasn't sure why Corey was out on the floor for so long while Biedrins and Randolph were on the sidelines. He said they were more effective with them in the game and phoenix was lucky they had been sitting for that long.
All true. There you see Nelly, stubbornly sitting the sidelines, watching our W's get demolished with no valid coaching calls, even Morrow rotting much of the game. Granted, Morrow had an off night, he just did, but again, he wasnt always the beneficiary of getting the open pass, and he has shown to be a rythm player in the past, what kiind of rythm is nelly depriving our young guys by not letting them play out consistent minutes the early part of our young season.
In my opinion, a starting 5 of Curry, Ellis, Morrow OR Buikie, Randolph, and Beans gives us our best mix of pure shooting mixed with Athletecism and rebounding. The ability to run the floor, and develop rythm. Yes, that means Jax should be our first off the bench, not Corey.
We clearly are missing the length and activity of Wright, and now Ronnie sprained his knee. But alot of these play calls and rotations are skewed.
Not sure why Nelly does some of the things he does, he is truly a relic in his thinking, and mental matchups against other coaches. Id feel much better putting the teams future in Coach Smart's hands

Agreed with most execpt the part where Jax comes off the bench
What’s the deal with Randolph being benched for most of the game ??? is he still suffering from his back injury or is Nelson just being Nelson….I don’t know why he kept Maggette in the game when he was clearly hurting us. Also, everyone is now talking about the shots taken/minutes ratio for Morrow. Although I understand they wanna look for Morrow’s shot more, I don’t understand the pressure they’re putting on him to keep shooting because now, you can tell his forcing his shots rather than letting the game come to him.

IF AR was injured, he wouldn’t have played the whole 4th quarter’s garbage minutes.
It’s clearly Nellie being Nellie, and why I hate him. We need Avery Johnson! We need Ellison to buy the warriors!

Heck Yeah!
The Warriors should relieve Nelson of his job at the end of the season, and let Avery Johnson take over. It’s ridiculous how Johnson hasn’t gotten a job since he was with the Mavs. His resume is incredible for a young coach.

Avery's Best Teams were NELLIE's
Nellie handed him a championship team on a platter – and he lost. Spectacularly at that. then things spiraled downward from there.

including being completely out-coached by Nelson in the playoffs when Johnson had a decidedly more talented team

I don’t know that Johnson got out-coached too badly. Weren’t they killed by mismatches and Jackson’s defense on Nowitzki?

I think you just answered your own question. The #1 seed shouldn’t be scrambling to make changes to their rotation to adjust to what the #8 seed is doing. After game 1 virtually every move Johnson made in that series reeked of panic.

Not to mention...
Nellie’s defensive scheme. It wasn’t simply Jackson playing great defense, it was Nelson knowing exactly when to send help and from which position. For all the crap Nellie gets for being purely an offensive minded coach, I have a hard time thinking of better examples of creatively effective defensive coaching than what Nelson put together against Dirk in the playoffs and Yao in the regular season that year. Even, to a lesser degree, that strange help zone he put up against Carmelo in our final game against the Nuggets that year after they had handled us the first three times we met.
He’s not a strong defensive coach in the traditional sense, but he can certainly be creative when he puts his mind to it. It actually seems like he’s at his best when he makes things complicated for himself. He trots out these unusual line-ups and forces himself to come up with a creative scheme to cover up the obvious flaws. As I’m writing this I’m reminded how much he appeared to mail it in last year, as most of my examples are from previous seasons… let’s hope he is a bit more inspired this year.

on a team like this
with no superstar to guide us, it’s essential to play like a team to have any chance to win. when guys like corey, jackson and monta monopolize the ball, and do a poor job of scoring it it gives us no shot what so ever. it’s sad that we can see that playing the young guys is the only chance we’re actually going to have to win some games and nelson either can’t see it or doesn’t care enough
by AJC3317 on Oct 31, 2009 4:36 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
don't put monta with them
he was poor vs. phoenix but did well against Houston, and has proven to be an efficient player. If that changes than yeah, lump him. But he’s a 2guard who shoots 50% (or above) passes decently well, and very scrappy on loose balls.
I do agree though, if we can somehow get a selfless wing player who can pass well, i think we’ll look alot better

Now we know why Jackson is mad.. LOL
Maggs sucks and Nelson loves him.. we will NEVER win anything with Maggs playing ANYTIME at the 4… Everytime he’s on the floor he’s my only focus and its like i’m pleading with the tv to just take him out or for him to just pass the ball.. but neither ever happens..

NEVER
I literally get this knot in my gut whenever i see that # 50 jersey on the floor. The ball just stops all momentum dies when it touches his hands.

I just posted this in the recap but...
Rotowire says:
Spin: It is mind-boggling why Don Nelson continues to play Corey Maggette when it is obvious that Maggette is running the team straight into the ground with his poor shot selection and trigger-happy ways.
Sorry, I try not to make a habit of repeating stuff.

My only defense is that we had few options. Playing an out of control Randolph will reinforce Randolph’s out of control play. It makes sense to sit him, when he’s out of control, for his long term development. Letting Mags play isn’t going to prevent us from winning a championship, exactly. We weren’t going to win last nights game anyway. Randolph’s +/- wasn’t much better than Maggette’s, which isn’t a good sign. If we had Wright, he may have replaced Randolph in the starting lineup by now.

Rotowire thinks it’s mind boggling that a coach hasn’t gutted everything after 2 games? ‘Continues to play?’ Sounds like they’re stuck on day trading strategy, not basketball.
There’s significant peril in drawing conclusions from a two game sample. Maggette’s career has been reasonable consistent as moderately ok from the floor but above average scoring efficiency because he can get to the line. If he returns to the efficiency that he had more or less every other year, his taking shots won’t be a problem. He usually takes fewer shots than he has in these first two, but I’m almost certain that you can find back-to-back games where he’s shot as often.

+1
and I have him on my fantasy team so he needs to do something! But once he cuts down the poor shot selection and just drives to hoop, he is a great 6th man. Overpaid? sure. But still a n effective player

Well, I was wondering if someone from GSM wrote that for Rotowire lol. It seemed a little over the top to me also.

I thought I was the only one who noticed...
How Maggette gets a lot of minitues while we see guys like Randolph, Biedrins and even Azubuike on the bench. Maggs can rebound, but that’s all he’s been good for. Not even a scoring threat in the last two games. Missed quite a few layups and open shots. It’s ridiculous how he gets 30 minutes off the bench while being not as productive as other players, even Nellie said that Magette was bad yet he still gets a lot of playing time. If Randolph is not injuried, are we ever going to see him show his star power? Or will Nellie always find a way to mess it up.

You’re doing two peculiar things here. #1: you’re drawing conclusions from two games and #2, you’re not even close to accurate in your data. Ridiculous that he gets 30 minutes? Perhaps, but so far this season not true. In the two games this year, he’s played 25 and 19 minutes.

Maggs had surgery on a finger in the offseason. If it’s still tender, I would expect him to be off kilter.

please review the box score of the Phx game
In minutes played, Morrow, Randolph, Azubuike all surpassed M’gette. Even if his minutes were more drastically reduced in that game, it was hardly likely to change the outcome. Fans might be mistakenly optimistic from the summer success of Randolph and Morrow against minor leaguers and rookies, but the team has problems containing decent players at 3/5 positions on the court, and the anointed “best players” on offense incl. M’gette either lack interest or aptitude in playing as a team.

Yeah I’m a over exaggerating, but it’s just that other guys have been better than Maggette, yet they still don’t get the playing time they deserve. I know Maggs has been getting rebounds, but that’s because he plays the 4 position a lot.
by DubsFan408 on Nov 1, 2009 5:11 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
2…games, where more or less no one has played all that well. I think you’re confusing “deserved” with “whom you would rather see play”.
I suggest you look at what Maggette has done for his career vis a vis rebounding, compare it to last year when he was the defacto 4 some of the time, and think carefully if there’s really much merit on attributing Maggette’s rebounds to him playing the 4 position. An honest evaluation of his career (and an honest assessment that 2 games is a terribly small sample size for this season) will indicate otherwise.
by jae on Nov 1, 2009 5:47 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think one thing is pretty clear so long as we have been watching our dubs is..
that Maggette, when he is on, and clicking within our scoring runs, and set plays, getting us points at the foul line in crunch time, can be hard to take off the floor. More often that not though , this hasn’t been his form on a consistent level.
What happens next, is that his selfish plays, turnovers, non or bad passes, mess with the teams tempo and hurt us, it is then Nelly’s turn to step in, act like a coach, and make a substitution in the game.
If AR or Morrow have been playing like Maggette has these last two games for 19 -25 minute stretches, well, let’s just say they wont even see half those minutes before getting pulled . While Maggs, these past two games has been arguably horrible, and coach has let him stay in.
Coach needs to act like a good, fair coach, and he hasn’t.

Nellie has a strong tendency to allow veteran players to “play through” their struggles, while viewing young guys as needing a much tighter leash. His thinking is that a veteran has earned the right to correct himself, while a young player does not have the maturity to fix things on the fly and needs to be coached up.

nellie.....
kept maggette on floor in first game cause he was our best rebounder then, even then only 24 minutes. In second game as he struggling he saw even less time.
