Thoughts On Preseason Game #2 (GS @ LAL)
(I figure it'd be good to discuss the first game most of us were able to see... if a mod puts up a recap, feel free to remove this.)
So, that wasn't pretty. There was no real reason to expect it to be... if you only have two real NBA-quality bigs in uniform, the Lakers are not the team you want to play. Add in the absence of 'Buike and the early exit of Monta, and this was bound to be ugly.
Still and all, I gotta say that I was delighted to see the boys again. Fun to see Randolph's hyperness, fun to see Morrow's quick release, fun to see Maggette being his jostling, frustrating self. I like these guys!
You can't glean much from a preseason game, but if we're not gonna overanalyze, why are we here? Thusly:
1) If Stephen Jackson's body language looked familiar, that's because it was identical to Al Harrington's body language around this time last year. Tunnel vision, gunning, no interest in fighting through screens (that was Jack who gave Sasha those open jumpers), *zero* rebounds. The idea that Jack is a brilliant team leader becomes more comical by the month... it's a PR gimmick he invented, a savvy one, but an empty one. If we can move him for contracts that expire in '11, I think we've got to consider that. It would be good to not have the guy anymore.
2) Curry! He reminded me of a young Monta, actually -- more shooting and less driving, o' course, but another little combo guard who can do a lot of stuff and makes his share of mistakes. I'm very, very excited about him, but I'm not convinced that giving him heavy PG minutes to start his NBA career is the right move... learning the league *and* the position simultaneously is a lot to ask. He seems like he's at least annoying on defense, which is a start.
3) God, I love Randolph. I don't know if he'll get as good as we all hope, but he's pretty damn entertaining as it stands.
4) There was something exciting about watching Morrow catch fire and realizing that last year really wasn't a fluke... that we really got a pretty good player out of nowhere. If the franchise's plan is to promote Randolph, Curry and Morrow as our nucleus for the future, this game accomplished that, if nothing else. I heart those three.
5) Not much to say about the other returning vets. Glad to hear Monta's okay. Biedrins was Biedrins, and it's weird how nobody thinks that's an important thing anymore... we still have a good young center here, people. I didn't have any beef with Maggette's game, as it's not like we should expect him to be able to cover Pau Gasol.
6) I didn't see much in the four non-Curry newcomers. Law's numbers look good, but really he shot a lot of free throws because Lakers kept bumping into him randomly, not because he was making things happen. He's playing hard, at least, and I guess he's probably good enough that we wouldn't miss CJ if we threw him into a package deal near the deadline. Moore didn't look at all useful... Pruitt didn't show anything to make you think he's a must-sign. It did put a smile on my face to see Speedy, and he did okay in limited time. But really, if any of these guys play significant minutes, something's gone wrong (which it already has, with Wright's injury... I hope we're trolling the D-league for an improvement on Moore).
Overall, it was vintage Dubs basketball: a bunch of fun plays, porous defense, tons of mistakes. Most of the guys played hard, though, and for a night where we faced the world champs and were several rotation guys short, it could've been worse. A .500 season isn't out of the question. But the first order of business should be to get Jack out of there... he's making a stink, he doesn't lead, he doesn't rebound, he doesn't shoot well, and his defense isn't nearly good enough to solve our problems on that end. Thank him for the good times and send him on his way... let's kill "We Believe" once and for all and see what the young 'uns can do.

Agreed
Jackson’s body language looked horrible last night from what I saw of the game. He looked like he didn’t want to be there and was just going through the motions, like how I look like in the office on a Monday morning, only difference is, he’s doing something that he has a passion for and me, not so much. =)
WARRIORS BASKETBALL!!! Patiently waiting for a title...I may be waiting for a long time...
100%.
“If Stephen Jackson’s body language looked familiar, that’s because it was identical to Al Harrington’s body language around this time last year.” He also looks 15 pounds heavier, in a bad way.

Trade him..
He just doesn’t fit in with our team anymore..

Another thing that looked familar about Jax
Getting the ball on a fast break and dribbling off his foot, then looking for a foul call…. The typical turnover machine. Hit the road Jack!

Anyone notice our lineup at the end of the game?
It was ridonkulous!
Morrow was our power forward. The 1-3 were Curry, Law and Speedy with Randolph at center. Maybe Nellie was just having fun living out his wildest basketball dreams. What surprised me is that with that lineup, we gained on the Lakers rather than losing ground.
expect to see Randolph at center
against some of the less-imposing front lines. Turiaf or he could play with three wings and a guard, because Azubuike or M’gette are o.k. defensively against some fours. Dal sometimes runs a variation of it with Nowitski as the big who can handle the ball and mix the offense; GS is hardly the only team that’s relatively thin either in quality or experience at the five and four, and there won’t be that many options if Biedrins gets into foul trouble or more injuries.
nice
good analysis. Last night you saw the upside and downside of a young squad. Curry looked good, and seems to have better point guard skills already than Monta has ever shown. Defense was terrible. Jack is already playing for another team in his eyes, and Morrow is lights out. Oh ya, AR is still a beast. I would like to see him settle down a bit and work out of the post, but his defensive help is amazing.
agreed= with all except
it wasn’t fun. Until these guys learn how to make plays, pass, and defend, it is hard to watch.
Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
Good point about
Andris. He is a very good young center and we should look to keep him. Curry, Morrow, Randolph, Andris BUkie, and Turiaf should be keepers

Gotta agree with the love for the three youngsters. Curry is still learning the ropes with plenty of mistakes, but there were flashes of brilliance here and there. Randolph looked pretty good draining those perimeter jumpers once in awhile. But Morrow really stuck out by catching fire after a slow start. If he keeps up his play he could very well be our leading scorer this coming season, and that would be very exciting to see considering he went undrafted.
Morrow leading scorer?? haha that would be sick and as much as I would love seeing that happen cause him and Randolph are basically my favorite warriors these days. But I don’t see it happening I think Monta will be our leading scorer and will have a good season… maybe an all star. But I’m pumped about Morrow I think eventually he can be a 18 or 20 ppg guy for us. I didn’t get to see the game but how was Morrow’s defense? From the look of the highlights it looked like he was guarding Kobe so that’s no fun but does he look any better or quicker on the defensive end? Cause that’s whats keeping him from starting.

The big differences between this year and last will probably be that we’ll be strong at PF and weaker at SF. Azubuike can fill Jackon’s shoes just fine, as long as Monta and Curry create more ball movement, which is all we lose with Jackson on the bench more. I think Randolph and Turiaf’s energy and determination can also help make up for the loss of Jackson’s leadership. (Also, Jackson is a leader. Baron Davis himself said of him in the We Believe year that “Jackson is the heart and soul of this team… ask anyone on the team.”
Welcome to the Pit of Despair! Don't even think about trying to escape.
Well if Baron Davis said it...
then it must be true!
If that was Jackson being a leader last night….thank you but I’ll pass.
My icon is a testament to the Dubs ability to play defense.
Didn't watch the game last night
but I did go to the first preseason game and I gotta disagree with you that Jackson looked uninterested. He was all over Baron on D (maybe because thats his boy). He did chuck up shots left and right, but that’s nothing new. He looked a lil heavier but so did everyone else on the team. Don’t get me wrong though, he wasn’t playing his heart out. I wouldn’t mind trading him at all. But it is a preseason game
So after looking at this game our future is
Stephen Curry
Anthony Morrow
Kelenna Azubuike
Anthony Randolph
Andris Biedrins
I think this is going to be our future squad once things start to calm down. Our back court would be pretty awesome with driving/dishing threats with all being deadly 3 point shooters and bukies ability to draw fouls. What do you guys think? Honestly this is probably what Nelly is going to throw out there come Friday. I hate Jackson and it’s easy to see Morrow is 10x more productive instead of Jackson and as would Bukie if he gets jacksons play time.
Don't count on it
Buike can opt out after this year and leave and Beans is being shopped around a lot. I still don’t get the no Ellis! Someone explain this hatred of Monta?
Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "Your a rookie"
It’s simple. Ellis is a 2 in a 1’s body. If we have a 1 that can make everyone better, like Morrow and Buike, with their excellent 3 point shooting, our offense becomes a thing of beauty. Right now, it’s fairly effective but hideous. Ellis at the 2 is great… if you have a big 1 that can defend opposing 2’s. We don’t have that. I like Ellis, but he’s a square peg for our round hole. Send him somewhere, where he can go berzerk shooting without the fans tearing their hair out that he didn’t pass to the best 3 point shooters in the league (or an up and coming superstar in Randolph).
Welcome to the Pit of Despair! Don't even think about trying to escape.
What do you guys think?
Short on experience? and by the time they get it they’ll be gone??

I'm not 100% sold that Jax doesn't care
He probably doesn’t, but it could also be a little bit of “preseason” mode. What’d he look like last year in pre-season?
You have been DFiBrillated.
