(Rusty Simmons) Uh oh, here's some trouble between Monta and Nellie today.

This just shows that the players quit on him

I don’t blame Monta. Nellie needs to go. I’d rather have any of our players stay rather than Nellie. We need a guy who can connect with a young team and motivate them. Brian Shaw? Smart?

Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"

I disagree

This is on Monta for not being ready for practice on time, especially if he’s in the role of a leader. As a leader, the responsibility is on him to set an example for the other players, and that includes the little details like having his ankles taped up and ready to go by the time practice starts.

Nelson: “What have I ever blamed you for?”

Ellis: “For everything. Everything. People not knowing their plays. I didn’t do this. I didn’t do that.”

I interpret this Monta quote as Monta underestimating the responsibilities and requirements of a leader position. When things go wrong, the questions will go through the leader (or manager, or supervisor, etc), and he has to figure out a way to try to get things right. It is his responsibility. The problem is that Monta interprets this as blame on him.

Was this precipitated by Monta being late for practice? Is that in another MT2 post? I haven’t seen anything about that.

Rusty Simmons thinks so, according to his article
Apparently, that’s how the latest episode of dysfunction started. Ellis had his ankles taped at the practice facility instead of the hotel, causing the team to start shooting before he was ready to take the court.
According to a Warriors player, Nelson reprimanded Ellis in front of his teammates. The player said Ellis wasn’t the only one who wasn’t quite ready when practice was scheduled to begin at noon, but the guard still took the brunt of Nelson’s wrath.

different player, same coach....just saying

There’s only one constant in these little spats that keep popping up

Monta is immature, kind of like Jackson. He says here that Nelson blames him for everything? That sounds simply like Ellis is insecure and defensive. I don’t know what Ellis’s deal is, but I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that it’s Nellie’s fault. I think it is an extension of already existing drama with #1 losing and #2 Jackson being a drama queen.

Welcome to the Pit of Despair! Don't even think about trying to escape.

Monta is my fav player....

But he needs to understand, blame will come along with responsibility.
He’s the leader of the team and he needs to see these things coming, but honestly, I wouldn’t like to see him leave. I’d rather see him and Nellie work things out.

The inciting...

…incident for this little spat isn’t as concerned to me as Nelson’s reaction to it; certainly on a team that isn’t doing well, there are any number of things you could call out a player for, and any number of things maybe you should. But the stated response to Ellis’ retort- Nelson waving his hands and walking away- is precisely the sort of response that will make the situation worse.

Coaching in the NBA is a cold s- kind of business, and a lot of things that aren’t necessarily your fault can come back to bite you. It’s very common for players to begin to tune out their coach after a couple years if the coaching isn’t producing results (regardless of whether it’s the coaching or lack of effort). If the Warriors were to fire Nelson today, and hire a new voice from outside the organization (preferably either an experienced coach, or a former player) this season could honestly turn around. There’s no reason this early in the season that we couldn’t rebound from the poor start, and getting the new coach surge could be just the ticket. Part of it is luck- going on a nice little three game win streak with the new coach at the helm, for example- but with a new voice at the top, and for contrast’s sake a more hands on approach, the entire outlook the players have on this season could change.

Only one man could fix this mess:

TONY DUNGY…..lol I know wrong sport, but I know he’d have more of their respect. I’m in favor of Jeff Van Gundy though. Maybe even Avery Johnson. Someone mentioned Brian Shaw. I’m all for giving the native son a shot, but I doubt he’d leave LA and I doubt he could fix the mess down here, since he hasn’t proven anything coaching-wise yet.

Anthony Morrow's jumper is so pure, he has to cut it with baking soda.
