Monta Trade that Makes Sense
If you beleve the rumors, Monta wants out of Golden State and the Warriors are letting his agent look for potential trade partners. We all know that when a player demands a trade it is hard to get equal value in return, but here is a trade that I think might work:
GS Trades: Monta Ellis, Corey Maggette, 2nd Round Draft Pick
Mem: Trades: Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, DeMarre Carroll
New GS Lineup:
PG: S. Curry
SG: A. Morrow
SF: R. Gay
PF: A. Randolph
C: A. Biedrins
New MEM Lineup:
PG: M. Ellis
SG: O. Mayo
SF: C. Maggette
PF: D. Arthur
C: M. Gasol
Reasons this Might Work:
- Grizzlies didn't sign Gay to an extension and apparently Rudy was pretty upset about it (Bill simmons talks about it here in his NBA preview http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmonsnflpicks/part1/091023&sportCat=nba). His contract expires at the end of this year so they will probably entertain offers from playoff contenders as the deadline draws close, but if they could get a young player with potential like Monta in return for Gay I think they'd take it.
- Considering the combined 5-14 record of the two teams, a trade like this would be an attendance booster.
- We'd be taking Z. Randolphs terrible contract off their hands and giving them maggettes in return, but Maggette seems like a better fit in that system.
- Grizzlies mgmt. have done dumber things before.
Biggest Concern:
Gay is a free agent at the end of this year, and considering the perception of the warriors organization around the league, it might be a long shot to expect Gay to resign here in the offseason. We'd have to offer him a max deal and hope he signs. However, with the potential for a lineup of Curry, Morrow, Gay, A. Randolph, and Biedrins, I I'm willing to take that risk.
If Memphis wants more we could include a future 1st round pick or maybe even B. Wright. We could also take Sam Young instead of DeMarre Carroll.
What do ya'll think?

Gay
I don’t think anyone wants our rubbish.
Monta may have a nice skill set, but our players have limited value on the market.
Disgruntled = less value.

No....
I doubt Monta will end up there. He was given some power to get into talks with other teams. Memphis is close to home but that’s not what matters at this point. He most likely wants to go somewhere where he can win.

Might work
Monta’s agent has been allowed to talk to other teams, but Jackson’s agent was given the same opportunity, and Jackson is currently playing with the Bobcats. Not exactly a contender. I think Monta just wants out. He is one of three Warriors still remaining from the “We Believe” team and is probably dying for a fresh start.
No one really knows what Chris Wallace is ever thinking, but a core of Ellis, Mayo, Maggette, and Gasol has to be more appealing to him than Conley, Mayo, Gay (who will probably be gone at the end of the year), and Gasol. With that extra draft pick they would have a nice nucleus on their hands.
The biggest problem I see is that the Memphis will probably try and hold onto Gay until around the trade deadline to try and maximize the return they can get on him. Will Monta still be around then? Nellie is already pressing the management to trade him, and I don’t know if Wallace wants to part with Rudy just yet.
But as the original poster said the Grizzlies management has done dumber things before.

Ok I'll bite on this one...
Going off your trade idea.
A more likely deal might be:
Gay, Jarkic, and Z. Randolph
for
Monta, Maggette, and Speedy
This would give the Warriors 23 million dollars in expiring contract after the 10-11 season in addition to Radmanovic 6.5, Turiaf’s 4.5, Wright’s 2.75, and Azabuike’s 3.25. That would clear $40 will only Biedrins making anything of significant value (Assuming A. Randolph, Morrow, Curry are all resigned reasonably).
Odds of this happening… 1%
A Sonics fan without a team... but after 6 seasons now of GS Warriors season tickets have convinced me to adopt the boys from Oakland.

SF = Gay
this trade woudl be sick. I think if that 2nd rounder were a 1st rounder this would be great for both teams. everyone kind of needs a change of pace, and i think an oj/monta backcourt could be pretty explosive, with an appropriate pg/sg dynamic. corey/zach seems almost superfluous but woudl eb great for the W’s from either a zach randolph or a salary cap perspective.

I'm not a big fan of Rudy Gay...
I’d rather get back an older, more proven guy than Gay. He’s an amazing athlete, but he doesn’t seem to have the desire to get better, and often completely disappears in games.

that makes sense to you ?!?!?
If it’s not drastically improving our team, why trade our best player ????? I’ve been saying it and will say it again. If all the players have a problem with Don Nelson. Don Nelson IS the problem, stop trying to get rid of the players, it’s Nellie that’s gotta go !!!
by ARandolph on Nov 17, 2009 3:52 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Nellie isn't going anywhere
We have the worst management in the NBA, and Nellie is their guy.
I couldn’t agree more that we can’t right this ship until he is gone, but we are stuck with him at least for the rest of this year. We might as well try and trade Monta (whose relationship was shot with the Warriors after how they handled the moped incident) and get some pieces or cap room for life after Nelson.

Nelly Runs The Ship
Nelly won’t fire himself and no one else in this mess will fire him either, don’t you get that??
by The Sear on Nov 17, 2009 8:00 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Nelly might be running the show but
Monta wont be the last player Nelson has a problem with, on that ESPN article, it mentioned that Randolph’s agent had a meeting with the warriors about his discontent with his role, lack of PT and playing as a center. So what’s next, trade Randolph because he and Nelson have a problem ?? Don’t YOU get that ?? Nellie doesn’t care about the players and there will always be somebody in his doghouse that’s gonna be disgruntled and lead to them asking for a trade. Nellie is just doing whatever he wants, on interviews, he looks like all the media is just bothering him and gives these short answers that don’t even clarify anything. Well guess what old man, that’s part of your job, addressing the media, answering questions, that is your f-ing job !!!! that’s what you get paid to do, look at the NFL coaches, the day after their games, they have to do a press conference and answer all the questions the media throws at them. Why does Nellie think he’s on top of the world ?!!?!

OJ Mayo or No
I don’t want Rudy Gay. I rather pair Mayo along with Curry
by Kid Curry on Nov 17, 2009 9:19 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Who is even worth Mayo on the W's?
Because I know Monta Ellis isn’t worth Mayo. If you want Mayo, they probably want Curry. But then again….This is the Grizzlies who traded Pau Gasol for a bunch of scrubs, so who knows..

by samuraaaaiiiiiii on Nov 17, 2009 11:02 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He was a scrub when they did the trade. He was a solid player last year, and he’s playing great this year because he lost weight/got better.

He was a scrub when they did the trade.
He wasn’t in the NBA when they made the trade. Memphis acquired his rights and he was a pretty well thought of prospect. They also got a ton of expiring money. It wasn’t AS BAD of a trade as most make it out to be. Its just that it was the one of the first marquee player-for-expiring contract trades and so it seemed a bit shocking.

yeah probably worse than most think. It was the kind of surrender trade that shoulda got that team moved instead of the sonics who had a great fan base.

Pau is a fantastic player. A good case can be made, and I think Sleepy and others have made it here, that he’s the best or most important player on the Lakers. But his younger brother is younger and cheaper and a pretty good player in his own right. Obviously Pau is a lot better than Marc, but I’m not convinced the Grizzlies couldve done a whole lot better than get a young big like Marc and a ton of cap flexibility. Its pretty unlikely Pau wouldve stuck around Memphis much longer and I doubt his trade value wouldve gone up as he got closer to free agency. You’re taking an awfully simplistic look at that trade……. its the same way you look at the JRich trade though, so I guess I should applaud your consistency.

He really wasn't
He was considered the top big in europe (behind Luis Scola) and was only 21 or 22 when trade happened. consider it similar to us trading Randolph and expirings for an all star big

No to Z.Randolph
If he comes, Nellie will play him 24/7 = more small ball (-_-) = no time for A. Randolph or Biedrins. I like Rudy Gay though because he’s a guy with a bright future and can play multiple positions at 6’8 unlike Stephen Jackson. Maybe Maggette + Ellis for Gay + Conley and a 2nd round draft pick?
by DubsFan408 on Nov 17, 2009 10:42 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Contracts don't even come close working
That’s why you need Randolph.
by HealthyWomanRoof on Nov 18, 2009 12:36 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t like Z-Bo much either and its possible Nelson would play him a lot, but at least he rebounds pretty well. Maggette is a better player, but if you have to have one of them playing PF I’ll probably take Z-Bo if his contract is shorter. I doubt Memphis is all that interested in adding that much long term money, but I’d probably do it.

There a re a lot of players you all think are incredible just because you only see them play against the Warriors. Zack Randolf leads the NB in offensive rebounds per game! (a fact sure to annoy all the haterz)

The Gasol trade...
Was because the Grizzlies had huge financial problems. Also Marc Gasol is probably putting up better numbers than any other sophomore in the league right now at the thinnest position in the league.
Could the Grizzlies have gotten more? It seemed so at the time, but looking back they got a near All-Star (check Marc’s numbers again) center and tons of cap flexibility. The cap space was used on Randolph, so in a year and half we basically traded Pau Gasol for two better than average starters.
Every game Marc plays it makes the Pau trade look less and less stupid. Not great, but not as awful as advertised.

?
I understand you not wanting to take on Maggette’s contract, but its entirely possible that you’d be getting the two best players involved in that trade. To me, Monta is clearly the best player in the deal. Maggette and Z-Bo are both pretty uniquely talented and flawed players, but I think Maggette, when allowed to play his natural position, is the better overall basketball player. Maggette’s contract is uglier than Z-Bo’s, but Randolph’s isn’t good either. I’d be surprised if Memphis agree to a deal that committed them to such a big long term contract, but I wouldnt certainly wouldn’t say they’d be “stupid” to consider it.

Monta's value...
Is kind of ambiguous right now. I don’t think anyone around the league knows what he is on a winning team. With a great point guard, as B-Diddy was Monta’s breakout season, he can be an incredible scoring off-guard, but he also doesn’t fit in a half-court system very well (theoretically) and needs bigs to stretch the floor for him.
Pairing him with O.J. Mayo wouldn’t be an ideal situation because both are definitely combo guards, and the Grizzlies wouldn’t have any talent at power forward after the trade. You’re right that It’s fair enough in terms of talent, but I don’t see any way this would happen as configured.
