Matt Steinmetz reports Warriors sign Chris Hunter from D-League

This just in via twitter.

Haven't seen anyone else report this yet.

Chris Hunter Player Profile

http://www.nba.com/dleague/playerfile/index.jsp?player=chris_hunter

I tried looking him up for this season but couldn't find any relevant info. Looks like he was signed by New York last year to a 10 day contract, other than that nothing. It's kind of mysterious if you ask me. Says on ESPN and CBS sports that he didn't play a game in college. I'm sure someone can post some info on this guy.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

The Golden State Warriors have signed forward/center Chris Hunter to a contract, the team announced Friday.

Hunter, who is being called up from the NBA Development League’s Fort Wayne Mad Ants, will be in uniform for Friday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers at Oracle Arena. Hunter, 25, was a D-League All-Star last season with Fort Wayne, where he averaged 19.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, 1.19 blocks and 32.7 minutes per contest in 47 games.

Looks like some size – I wonder if this means Beans might be further away from returning than was initially thought?

More likely Turiaf is further away, than we thought.

Biedrins is scheduled for a reanalysis on Monday. In the end, more beef is always good.

yup, another D-leaguer rides in to save the day – this must be the “big changes” the FO promised …

young, hurt and nellie ain’t going to make it easy to win.

I’m more depressed about the morrow situation.

lollll. man...u scared the hail out of me.

I agree. it frustrates me how Nellie doesn’t come up with more offense plays for this guy.

There are times on the floor where Morrow seems very timid (possibly because he needs a lot of improvement with his ball handling skills) and hesitates to shoot at times.

Morrow should be attempting 20 shots minimum as many fans suggested a million times.

I think its a matter of Morrow getting really comfortable playing at this level. I

It will eventually come.

NBA.com post

http://www.nba.com/dleague/news/hunter_091120.html

NEW YORK, Nov. 20, 2009 – The Golden State Warriors today signed Chris Hunter of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants making, him the first GATORADE Call-Up of the 2009-10 NBA Development League Season. Hunter joins 61 other NBA players with NBA D-League experience.

The GATORADE Call-Up marks the second of Hunter’s career, as he was signed by the New York Knicks on April 14, 2009. Hunter appeared in two preseason games for the Knicks prior to the start of the 2009-10 season, scoring four points in nine minutes before being waived on Oct. 22 and signing with the NBA D-League.

A 2009 NBA D-League All-Star, the 6-11 Hunter appeared in 47 games, all starts, for the Mad Ants last season, averaging 19.3 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 32.8 minutes. He scored in double figures on 44 occasions, including twice scoring a season-high 34 points (Feb. 19, in a 99-90 win over the Sioux Falls Skyforce and April 5, in a 105-86 win over the Tulsa 66ers). For his efforts last season, Hunter was named to the All-NBA D-League Second Team.

A four-year contributor at Michigan, Hunter averaged 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 30 games during his senior season.

Hunter is expected to join Golden State today and be available tonight when the team hosts the Portland Trail Blazers at Oracle Arena.

The question is who did they cut to open up a roster spot?

The NBA did away with the injured reserve list when they expanded the rosters to 15 players.

Well the good news is that maybe after all our bigs’ went down we sent scouts out to canvas the D league and they took their time to evaluate the talent.

Hope this works out and at worst we have another Brian Cardinal kind of hustle big that get the dirty points.

Its a loophole in the 8 men dressed rule. We can pick someone up due to lack of 8 healthy bodies.

that’d be wilson chandler and a rabbi, neither of whom is me, sadly.

i watched hunter with the knicks in training camp. he’s not all that polished offensively, but he’s a big, smart guy who realllllly gets after rebounds and can defend a little, too.

We better have cut George

Speedy has too big of an expiring deal to pass up and Raja as well .

About time. Gotta figure it’s either the of Devean George or an exemption from the league granting us an extra spot… we’ll see, I guess. If this guy’s even passable, he could stay up here for a good long while.

we may not have cut anyone

cj watson has swine flu and there is a rule that says if you have a certain number of players injured and with swine flu there then you can temporarily sign someone

The Warriors were able to add Hunter under the NBA’s hardship rules, which allows a team that is unable to suit up the minimum eight players to sign an additional player.

After the game, Nellie sure seemed to indicate he was going to do everything he could to keep him around. With Turiaf down, we need the beef. Heck, even with Andris and Ronny and Randolph all playing, I can see a need for the kind of D he gives with guys like Odem in the league.

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

by fotd on Nov 20, 2009 10:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

I just saw that. I hope they find a way to keep him. He seemed more useful than a couple of the guys at the bottom of the roster to say the least. Of course it was only 13 minutes of game time, but he looked nice.

until they have 8 healthy players from their 15 man roster. so barring further injury, until CJ or Andris or Ronny comes back – i’m hoping Mikki Moore to go down with a mysterious injury when one of the guys returns.

Chris Hunter

can play. He played great defense, hustle, and his 2 baskets gave the Warriors some momentum. He’s big enough to hang with guys like Greg Oden since he has some beef on him. Nice reserve, hope he sticks around.

I love the fact that it seams like we have the best D League scouts out there.

Looks and sounds by all accounts like he can fit in really well...

Seems like he has good BBall IQ and some of that will certainly rub off onto Randolph…and with Radman playing it seems with a new lease of life (Love his defensive steals and hustle)… we might…..just might…. have a truly superb 2nd half to the season…personally I really like the look of:

Ellis
Curry
Maggs/(Buike when fit)
Biedrins
Randolph/Wright

with:
Morrow
Radman
Turiaf
Bell
CJ
Hunter
Moore

Me likey……

So the countdown question is

Who do we buyout if we don’t make a trade. Speedy or George. George has the smaller contract by a lot which of course for deadline trade purposes makes Speedy more attractive.

by jpgarfunkle on Nov 21, 2009 11:06 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

agreed...

The claxton contract may bear us more fruit considering neither player is going to play for us, so why not dump George?

no offense to CJ

But I hope he pretends to have the flu way after he’s already over it. At least until Turiaf or Biedrins are healthy again. It’s a blessing in disguise that Don Nelson only has 3 guards he can use.

Anyone know the latest on the Hunter situation...

I presume if we can field 8 regular players without Hunter that we no longer qualify for the hardhip rule by the NBA? Therefore we would have to release someone off the roster?

Or..having signed him under the hardship rule, we now have him on the rostor for as long as we have signe him for? which I presume was a 10 day contract?

Anyone know of the exact ruling? Surely we have to cut George and retain this guy? He gives us a presence we have not had for a LONG time…This guy can go man to man with any big guy in the league from what I have seen so far.

10 day contracts don’t begin until some time in January, sometime after the date at which all non-guaranteed contracts become guaranteed for the season.
