Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

A player we REALLY should think about drafting (despite being a wing player). He's got alot of BRoy/Penny hardaway in him.

He can do everything

Pass, drive, pass, rebound, play D. Other than Wall he’s the only player I really want

Derrick Favor's looks pretty legit

and is committed to defense/rebounding which is rare for a youngster w/ his athletic gifts

by tafkasam on Nov 23, 2009 1:52 PM PST up reply actions

Do we really want another skinny power forward who is a project?

I want an upgrade at SF either as a free agent or a rookie. And Turner can play the 1,2 and 3

If you have the chance to draft Favors, I'd go ahead and do it.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

I told Randolph that Bill Russell would tell him to keep that ball in play and start the break.

RANDOLPH: "I know. But sometimes, you gotta let ‘em know."

well Randolph was a WAY bigger project than Wright

Skills wise wright could still be an above average NBA 4. The issue is getting his body right. Probably adding 25 lbs and not getting so hurt. He made defensive errors and his rebounding was inconsistent (to be nice)… but he was incredibly efficient scorer who could run the court with the best of them…..TBH I have hope Wright might turn out to be an above average PF. He’s 22……

Randolph, lacks all sorts of basketball polish. I mean if we r really being fair, he’s just an incredibly athlete who is 6-11. If he was 6-3 he wouldn’t be in the nba…..

Favors gets alot of young Amare comparisons. Amare was almost an instant hit. We shall see….

What's your obession with Wall?

We’re not gonna get him, unless we get lucky like the Clippers and get the 1st pick.

Maybe because he's an exciting player.

I don’t think we will have a great shot at him, but the dude is entertaining to say the least. His debut so far has been better than Rose’s imo. Rose if I can remember never posted a double digit assist game in college.

10 turnover vs UNC

And disappeared in the NCAA tourney. Don’t get me wrong, he’s intriguing but I want to see him step it up in a big game.

A Sonics fan without a team... but after 6 seasons now of GS Warriors season tickets have convinced me to adopt the boys from Oakland.

by mcwalter44 on Nov 23, 2009 2:23 PM PST reply actions

I watched that UNC game...

he was off, but it wasn’t as bad as it sounds…. He also had 11 rebounds and shot 9-14. No other starter was 50%

Anyway 1 turn overs is 10 turn overs, but its hard to equivocate college game that way considering its half court and zone

BTW tornament he put up 25, 9 reb, 8 assist, 2 steals 2 blocks… hardly disapeared

by tafkasam on Nov 23, 2009 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

cont'd

anyway you’re right. He’s intriguing enough to keep watching…..

Good call

I should have double checked before dropping the NCAA tourney comment. Stats are solid too bad his team was dropped by Sienna.

Here’s Draft Express report on him this past june:

USA Basketball Junior National Teams Tryouts: The class of this roster in terms of pure talent, Evan Turner started off the tryouts slowly—looking to show off his playmaking skills primarily—but eventually settled down and put his versatile all-around game on full display. Turner was clearly the best ball-handler and shot-creator on the roster, getting extremely low with the ball and weaving in and out of traffic impressively with his excellent footwork and spin moves, often to finish with a pretty floater. He has a tendency to over-dribble at times and make some careless mistakes, but it’s tough to argue with he brings to the table as a shot-creator. His perimeter shooting was hit or miss, especially from beyond the 3-point line, but he did show a very nice ability to pull-up off the dribble and make shots from mid-range. It was very informative to see Turner outside the confines of Ohio State’s zone, as he was really able to show his potential as a big-time defender here, switching out onto guards and using his excellent size and length to keep his man in front of him and contest everything.

Sounds like Captain Jack 2.0… maybe even a Prince like SF.

Sounds like Captain Jack 2.0… maybe even a Prince like SF.

Except that Jackson and Prince combined don’t even sniff Turner’s rebounding chops (15.3 per 36??) Also: 6.2 assists and 2.1 steals per 36? And a .593 shooting percentage?

I think I’m in love. Let the “Tank for Turner” movement begin!

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Nov 23, 2009 6:02 PM PST up reply actions

Sadly I don't think we NEED to tank to get him

He might even be a reach at our current projected draft status….. The kid runs the court well, and I really wanna see him in a pro style game, cause I think he can be a star wing player. Sort of a pippen/hill type of wing who is your main playmaker. Who can go in and post up, etc. But I can’t get a read if he really has that high a ceiling or if he’ll be more just a very solid role player……

I love the fact he is there point guard and guards the 4, lol. He’s just a very good team player, who will grow a lot this year.

It looks like this years draft will be a lot deeper than last years. Lot of interesting players…

by tafkasam on Nov 23, 2009 8:08 PM PST up reply actions

I agree with you and Sleepy.

But I think he needs to prove he can hit the 3pt shot consistently.

If you watched that game....

You’d see that OSU had NO ONE ELSE. Lighty and the other guards couldn’t hit crap. Plus UNC packed the paint because they know Turner is a slasher. He’s not a PG, though he’s playing one for Thad Matta. The 10 TO’s are probably attributed to him doing too much out there.

yep

he’s kind of guy in an open system can be a good playmaker (secondary ball handler), get u 4-6 assists a night when he figures out the league. You can never have too many guys who know how to handle/make plays.

he’s a committed defender, great rebounder, and his shooting will improve (he can hit shots, just not 3point range yet)

by tafkasam on Nov 24, 2009 4:49 PM PST up reply actions

Evan Turner

He killed us (Cal) in the most recent tournament. Granted that with Theo Robertson out, we used a backup to defend him. Still, Jorge Guiterrez is a very good defender. Turner does everything. He might be best described as a “jack of all trades, king of none” kind of a player. Still, with that said, I don’t know if we should draft him with our top pick in 2010. We’ll have to wait and see.

I liked his game from his sophmore year

I know we won’t get Wall so let’s just go for Turner if anything.
He has a nice build to his body, somewhat beyond Randolph’s and I know Nelson wouldn’t hesitate to play him at the 4.
Anywayz, I’d like him on the team.

b/c he is already a better PG than ellis and curry

and he is clearly the BPA

and you know this from watching him dunk the ball 3 times in a 4 minute tape?

or play against high schoolers? Monta put up 72 points against high schoolers at what? 18? And what?

based on the fact that if he went in the last draft, he woulda been 1 or 2 according to all draft experts…and currently every draft expert has him as the by far favorite for #1….

Not always, Kwame anyone?

by dubzfan on Nov 23, 2009 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

He'd still probably be #1.

Wall and Rose are favorable prospects as far as PG’s with extreme athleticism and questionable shots go. Don’t forget Rose beat out one of the best Freshman bigs in NCAA history in Beasley. Unless Derrick Favors starts posting crazy numbers, I think Wall is still has a good chance to go #1 regardless of how the rest of the prospects produce.

Just an FYI (draft sites)

Pick:
Hoopshype: 7th pick
DraftExpress: 6th pick
NBADraft.net: 8th pick

Comparisons:
HoopsHype: Anthony Parker
DraftExpress: Best case: Anthony Parker Worst: Thabo Sefalosha
NBADraft.net: Brandon Roy/MArquis Daniels

(combining what all say)
The Positives: Great shot creator, passer, rebounder, ball handler, very coachable, great feel, great midrange game, 7ft wingspan, good defender,

The Negative: Overdribbles, turn over prone, 3 point range, not an amazing athlete

My only worry about Turner is

That he may be good at a lot of things, but not great/dominant in any one category. Sometimes players like that can’t find their groove in the NBA.

Nah those players always find a place in the NBA. but your point is valid…. look at guys like anthony parker, pietrus etc. Good nba swing men…. waste of lottery pick.

and thats the risk, will he improve and be a grant hill/scottie pippen type (I realize huge expectations, he still compares favorably to them in college) OR will he be the type of guy who disapoints and then finds his place as a good role player later on
