OPEN THREAD - Warriors @ Mavericks - Time to Get Smart
Golden State Warriors at Dallas Mavericks, Nov 24, 2009 5:30 PM PST

Warriors: 4-8
Mavericks: 10-3
Tip-Off: 5:30pm
TV: CSN Bay Area
Radio: KNBR 1050
Blog Buddy: Mavs Moneyball
First of all, we wish Coach Nelson a quick and speedy recovery. Everyone's been demanding for a coaching change and to bring in Coach Smart - here's your chance to see what can happen.
In our first game at home without Cap'n Stephen Jackson, we saw some new developments. (Open Thread / Warriors Web / Recap). Monta Ellis coming into his own? Anthony Randolph calming down a bit? Ball movement? Michigan alumn (GO BLUE!) Chris Hunter?
Things are looking sunny in The Bay...
Unfortunately for us this guy is playing out of his mind.

God I hate the Mavericks.
R Dizzle's Predictions
- Warriors by 2 - Coach Smart pulls in his first win!
- Dirk scores 30 points
- Monta Ellis comes down with a double-double
- Chris Hunter crashes down with 8 boards
- Anthony Morrow brings in 3 treys

So....
From Marcus Thompson Nellie "Sick as a Dog"
CJ’s still out with the swine flu. Nellie’s out with pneumonia, with swine flu test results pending. Another member of the Warriors staff (not a player or coach) has the swine flu. Bob Fitzgerald is out sick for this Texas road trip. Tim is covering on the TV side. Dave Flemming is covering Tim Roye on the radio side.
From what I’m told (by people who I trust aren’t spinning), Nellie is not happy about not being able to coach. That he probably shouldn’t have coached Friday’s game against Portland and had to make a trip to the hospital he was so sick. It took some work to convince him to stay back on the road trip. His wife is even staying with him to make sure he is taking his medicine and getting his rest.
And word is that AR is doubtful with a knee problem
though no local Warriors beat writer has mentioned this yet.

He had 4 points last game… I would have to think that with so few people that number is going to improve… unless someone (Monta or Morrow) goes for 50 or something.

Whatever anyones feelings about Don Nelson…. I am sure no one wishes ill for him and so we all wish him well and a swift recovery. Obviously with all the stress of whats been going on of late…the body just turned round and said…“ok…you need a break…”
Good luck Keith Smart….. your gonna need it! ;) I will be very interested to see if Chris Hunter can take Dirk out of the game the same way he did with Oden….
If he does….. this place is going to go mad!!
Real shame I cant watch this one…but early meetings in London Town tomorrow means an early night for me.

by samuraaaaiiiiiii on Nov 24, 2009 2:53 PM PST up reply actions
Hmmm I hope not...
Maggs is big power wise…but Dirk will just shoot over him… We’ll need the big fella on him…. I would actually also wonder what Radman might be like 1 on 1 against Dirk… Rad’s hands are very quick and he may get enough steals to knock Dirk off his stride….as long as we stop him running hot…..we might have a chance….

Very few can stop dirk
Our best chance is to make him take as many jumpers and hope to score well to make up for it.
I’d say we have a better chance beating SA than dallas.
Game Predictions
- The Dallas Mavericks defeat our Golden State Warriors, 114-100.
- Monta Ellis leads the way with 25 points and over 55 percent shooting.
- Chris Hunter throws a block party.
- Jason Terry kills us from deep.
- Keith Smart looks more interested than Don Nelson.

IMHO, Don Nelson > Keith Smart
I’ll probably never understand the lack of appreciation for Don Nelson among my GSOM compatriots. No that I’m somehow smarter or see things more clearly, I literally don’t understand why so many people rag on a man who gives this team its identity.
As long as I’ve been a Warrior fan (since the 80’s), our most successful teams have been those coached by Don Nelson, the second winningest coach in NBA history. The man has a vision and he emphasizes an exciting style of play.
Nelson has his faults, but you take the good with the bad.
As much as I like Keith Smart, I prefer Nelson as HC.

Romes Mac Mojous
by ROMESdavidWOOD37 on Nov 24, 2009 5:29 PM PST up reply actions
just that when he took over a couple times he coached small or similarly small as The Don
Though I do remember a couple times when Nelson got ejected and Smart almost immediatly put Wright in which was cool
oh ok.
Well. I like Keith Smart’s emphasis on team defense and rebounding. He also seems to be a player’s coach.

mikki moore is responsible for the 4 pts were down.
2 pts for not getting back on Dirk, 2 pts for not boxing out on the Gooden tip in, and 2 pts for the missed tip in.
I'd blame monta and curry shooting too much
Especially monta, too many contested jump shots
Curry really isn’t shooting ALL that much.
by Reverend_Randy on Nov 24, 2009 6:45 PM PST up reply actions
Curry's problem is
He waits too long to shoot. When Dallas went to the zone he had a wide open three to take instead he dribbled the ball around too much and missed a jumper instead.
that too.
14 pts on 14 shots is awful for a guy who should be driving. but Moore is the difference especially finishing the half.
Ellis couldn't drive as much
Because of the two fouls, in the second half you will see him get to the rim at will against the Mavericks.
why's maggette not playing?
not that I want him to.

Randolph played great in the 4th
he kept on jumping out and contesting shots, the Mavs missed so many shots with Randolph closing out, coming from out of nowhere. His boards were down, but much of that was because he kept switching to guard the wings. Great growth game for Ellis, Curry, Morrow, and Randolph. Great D on Dirk, especially taking fouls on the floor when they had fouls to give and Dirk had a step on him.

There’s definitely an argument to be made for that. Jackson is a beast and gets it done with terrible “talent” around him. The best running backs in the NFL are Steven Jackson, Chris Johnson and Adrian Peterson in no specific order. After that, I’d probably go with Maurice Jones-Drew.

All you need to know is
Monta Ellis attacked the rim and the Mavericks really didn’t have an answer for it. Some negative fans are expressing the fact that Maggette did not play due to a tender hamstring as another reason on why the Warriors won.
I think the opposite I think that Maggette would have helped especially getting to the free throw line.
Another huge part to the game was the fact that Anthony Morrow went 6-8 from beyond the arc and finished with 27 points. Ellis lead the way with 37 points.
Finally, what really got the Warriors the victory was after Ellis was slowed by cramps, Stephen Curry took over the game by doing exactly what Ellis was doing getting to the rim and Curry made the three that put the Warriors up for good in the closing minutes of the game.
Also, as a team the Warriors went 11-17 from the field in the fourth quarter and having three men on the floor who played all 48 minutes the question I have were they really tired?
Further proof that “depth” is one of the most overrated things in basketball.

nellie got the credit for this game
just let smart coacch and nellie sit there looking like the coach
Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"
How unfair to Smart though. Haha.

Didn't have a computer close by...
…but I saw the game, and I’m so freaking proud to say that the Warrior streak continues! Extremely proud of the effort tonight!
and it didn't start out that way
it was sloppy on both sides early on
by IQofaWarrior on Nov 24, 2009 8:24 PM PST up reply actions
No doubt
it was a little sketchy from the get-go, but ultimately, we never gave up. I’m loving this trend!
by SigEpWarrior on Nov 24, 2009 8:25 PM PST up reply actions
oh man, i can't wait to find out what the dallas local writers are going to say about this
by IQofaWarrior on Nov 24, 2009 8:26 PM PST up reply actions
I'd assume
they would have to give us a little credit. We won it as much as the Mavs blew it.
by SigEpWarrior on Nov 24, 2009 8:27 PM PST up reply actions
i believe that Nellie was 24 games shy of the coach with the most win
if Smart won today, would that win counts toward Nellie’s win
Rollin' Six Deep
Seriously, they won on the road against a top West team with only 6 healthy players (and Hunter)? Monta is a beast again (11 TOs aside) and with Jax gone, I won’t be surprised if he basically absorb his PPG by himself, Curry was extra spicy as the closer, Radman will get a huge phone bill this month with all that long distance 3’s and boards!
Looking forward to some Monta-Parker madness tomorrow…
Win the inning.

There was a little post about him just a day or two ago. Tonight, he had 16 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals on 8-for-14 shooting.

Just realized Monta completely screwed my fantasy team with those 11 TO.

he completely made up for it with the 37 points and 8 assists, though.

That helps but I’m dead in TO this match-up. lol.

Yeah, I just traded for him. Good thing it doesn't take effect until tomorrow though.
Those TO’s would’ve killed me too.

DALLAS (AP)—Monta Ellis(notes) scored a season-high 37 points, Anthony Morrow(notes) added a season-best 27 and the short-handed Golden State Warriors ended Dallas’ five-game winning streak with a 111-103 victory over the injury-depleted Mavericks on Tuesday night.

Kawakami speaks
OK, time for me to get scalded by Warriors homers who have kept the faith and wanted to swat me silent. Tonight, the Warriors delivered in every form imaginable–and I look stupid. So come on, rip me. Tonight is yours. Maybe the rest of the season will be yours, too.
Rats, for a second I thought you were Tim K!

Watson is expected to rejoin the Warriors for Wednesday night’s game at San Antonio.
Things are looking up : D
that means we loose hunter
We need some size against timmy!
This was a road win
The boston win was at home
But it just says best game in almost two years
I figured that included home games. The Warriors beat the Hornets on the road last year holding them to 87 points. Also, beating the Jazz in Utah was a good win as well.
That Jazz game is where C.J. Watson scored 38 points and outplayed Deron Williams and Rob Kurz scored 21 points as well.
I think the Utah win was one on e the best
Utah was really good at home last year and we went in there with 7 guys(sort of like today) and won
