With A Valiant Effort the Golden State Warriors Stun the Dallas Mavericks
Warriors vs Mavericks coverage Warriors vs Mavericks boxscore Original Article on Bleacher Report
The Golden State Warriors coming off their best win of the year on Friday over the Portland Trailblazers, proved tonight that victory was no fluke.
The Warriors have right now nine players either injured or sick and head coach Don Nelson was out for tonight's game due to pneumonia.
As per league rules the Warriors had to dress eight players and those players were Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry, Anthony Morrow, Anthony Randolph, Mikki Moore, Vladimir Radmanovic, Chris Hunter, and Corey Maggette.
Maggette did not play tonight due to a tender hamstring and Hunter also didn't play either.
Even more surprising was the fact that the Warriors were able to keep it close in the first half. Part of the problem was that the Warriors got in foul trouble early and the Mavericks are a great free throw shooting team.
Ellis lead the way in the first quarter scoring 12 of the Warriors 25 points and that kept them close to the Mavericks who had a 27-25 lead at the end of one. That was also the amount of points each team scored in the second quarter 27-25.
Going into half time the lead for the Mavericks was 54-50. I think what helped the Warriors gain confidence is the fact that they weren't down double digits at half time after turning the ball over nine times in the first quarter alone, although the Mavericks didn't fair much better with six of their own.
As mentioned earlier the Mavericks were able to get to the line a lot in fact 21 free throw attempts and 19 were converted for the team.
But, the game really didn't get exciting until after half time. That's when the game started going back and forth. The Warriors were able to grab a seven point lead on a three by Anthony Morrow.
Yet, the Mavericks got Jason Terry and Dirk Nowitizki going towards the end of the quarter and took a seven point lead of their own.
Since, I have NBA League Pass Broadband I was listening to the Mavericks announcers and at the time they were wondering if the Warriors were going to fold up the tent.
The Warriors came back though on a tremendous drive by Ellis who also got fouled and completed the three point play to get the Warriors back within four.
In the fourth quarter the start was sloppy for both teams and the Warriors were able to tie the game up. The Mavericks again took a lead and it looked like again the Warriors were just not going to get the win.
That's when Ellis stepped up again consistently getting to the basket and either drawing the fouls or creating three point play opportunities, but Ellis towards the end of the game started cramping a little bit.
Curry took over for Ellis attacking the rim and getting fouled and what really helped for the Warriors is the fact that they were able to get into the penalty early in the quarter and the Warriors only had one which allowed them to play more aggressive defensively and foul before the shot in the closing minutes of the game.
This game showed why the Warriors were so high on Curry he scored 11 of the last 13 points for the Warriors including a huge three to break a 100-100 tie and after that the Warriors never relinquished the lead, the closest the Mavericks were able to get to was two points on a three by Jason Terry.
In the end with only six players playing the Warriors were able to put up a valiant effort and get what is now their best win of the year.
Ellis lead the way for the Warriors with 37 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals. Morrow scored 27 points including going 6-8 from beyond the arc, and Curry had 18 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals.
Radmanovic lead the Warriors in rebounds with 12, Moore chipped in 11, and Morrow added nine.
Just to show how impressive the Warriors win was three players played all 48 minutes Ellis, Morrow, and Radmanovic while Moore had 30 minutes, Anthony Randolph had 30 minutes, and Curry had 34 minutes.
Again the Warriors only played six players while the Mavericks played nine players tonight. Earlier I stated how the Mavericks had gone to the line 21 times in the first half well in the final two quarters the Mavericks went a total of four times and one was a technical free throw after Keith Smart got a technical for blasting the refs for a no call when Morrow was hit by Nowitzki after taking a jumper and no foul was called.
For a team that had three players that finished playing all 48 minutes I have one question who says they were tired? The Warriors finished the fourth quarter going 11-17 from the field.
Another impressive stat was the fact that the Warriors held Nowitzki without a field goal for the entire fourth quarter and the final three minutes of the third quarter. Before that the Mavericks announcing crew stated that Nowitzki was going to score 40 he finished with 28.
That just shows just how great the effort was for the Warriors in defeating the Mavericks.

Great game. If Ellis can cut down his T.O.‘s and continue his tear, he’ll be untouchable.

Part of that he does need some rest
He can’t play every minute of the season.

I agree.....
You can see the fatigue start to settle in during games as he gets sluggish. Those cramps are also signs saying……..WE NEED CJ BACK!!!

He’s supposed to be back tomorrow. I hope he’s healthy enough to take on at least 30 min.’s.

Take less shots too
But it’s all good, he did well again tonight. Can’t take that away from him. Hopefully he doesn’t have to keep playing 48 minutes. Maybe if Bell or Watson comes back (Azubuike is done) then the Dubs have some men who can spare him some minutes. Other than that, good job to the Dubs and hopefully we keep saying them play like this.

You can't really complain about the shot selection
When he shot over 50 percent from the floor.
by Rocky63215 on Nov 24, 2009 9:13 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
How often have you seen him shoot over 50% from the field this season? I’m just saying he should cut back on his shots just a but and maybe give some to Curry or Morrow who hit a higher percentage…
by DubsFan408 on Nov 24, 2009 9:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Counting tonight's game
Five games shooting at or above 50 percent and one game over 45 percent, Ellis has two games below 45 percent, and five games below 40 percent.
While I agree with you that Ellis does need to cut down on some of his shots I do think he’ll start hitting those mid range jumpers Ellis will have a field goal percentage similar to the 2007-2008 season he had because teams will have to play for him to drive.
by Rocky63215 on Nov 24, 2009 9:45 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t mind him shooting too much. He’s feeling things out. He used to be able to shoot .500 regularly, and he’s still shaking some rust off. I expect him to get back to where he was by mid-season, shooting-wise. In the meantime, if he’s shooting too much, I don’t mind. He’s proven in the past that he can be a successful high volume shooter, so I say we let him keep working his way back.

Very true. I think his penetration was demoralizing and opened things up for Morrow and Curry.

He is not a good shooter and needs to cut down the jumpers
Thank you Al Davis for Michael Crabtree!!!!!

He is not a good shooter now that's just a dumb comment
If Monta wasn’t a good shooter teams would be playing off him expecting him to drive, but since Monta can hit those jumpers they have to play up on him which allows for him to drive. Either way teams are screwed!
by Rocky63215 on Nov 25, 2009 12:08 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
When Monta's shot is a lay up he is a good shooter
When it is a 15+ shot he is below average. Calling that Dumb is just mean shame on you!

do you even know the players?
monta has one of the better pull up jumpers….just b/c he’s not hitting them as much as we would like in a small sample size does not mean he should stop taking them…his ability to take them makes his drive far more effective

Uhhh….you know pre injury he did…clearly YOU don’t.
his pull up was automatic…the month he went 60% from the field he was mostly taking jumpers…

No he went for 60 from the field and that includes dunks and layups
His jump shot is and always has been inconsistent I’m not saying it wont get better but he is not a good jump shooter. If you want to look at a good jump shooter look at Anthony Morrow that guy is AMAZING

My fav. was Willy Mays although for sheer entertainment Jesus Alou was pretty fun.

Have you ever watched Vlad? I’ve never seen someone that swings with such reckless abandon – he swings so hard (because he knows he’s swinging before the pitcher throws it)….and just hits it no matter where it ends up. It’s awesome!

Radman, for someone thats mainly reguarded as a shooter in the league
I have to say he is a very underated in terms of being a finisher at the rim

…our equivalent of Mich Richmond for a present-day version of Billy Owens.

Gotta be consistent with first or last names.
TMC = Tim, Mitch, Chris
EMC = Elllis, Morrow, Curry
As a nickname, EMC > AMC.
Also, Randolph, for now, is more like the Tyrone Hill figure in the whole deal. For the sake of analogy, Curry = Hardaway, Ellis = Richmond, Morrow = Mullin. It’s actually not that far off…

But “IF” for fun sake Curry and Morrow are the equal to Monta…. does that mean we actually have ….
E=MC^2 ?
It’s all ‘Relative’ I guess……

I’d go with Claxton, but he doesn’t play he shouldn’t factor into the equation.

That was just great to watch...
However…. is anyone else noticing how disconnected Monta seems to be from his teammates? Everyone else is going nuts to each other, with smiles…. Monta, a couple of hand slaps, no smiles, no emotion…
THAT….bothers me and I have this nasty thought just ticking away that Monta Ellis is doing what he can to showcase himself for a trade to a contender for the championship….
who will come in and make an offer too good for the FO to refuse….
I truly hope that is not the case… but I get a sense from his body language, he is just doing what he can to attract interest from wherever….can you imagine him on the Lakers with Kobe and Co… Oh dear god!!

It’s called the “I’ve been there before and we should be doing this every game, so it’s nothing to get amped about” factor. You’re reading too much into it. He’s trying to be a leader, not buddy buddy giddy giddy.

That just means he expects to win, getting all giddy like a school girl over a win means they are not usually winners. You ever watch Ted Williams celebrate a game winning hit?

11 turnovers?
did Monta really have 11 turnovers?
still he had a great game – and the whole team played with guts.
i don’t really know why Chris Hunter sat, but i think Maggs was nursing the hammy and Smart decided to save him for the spurs game

Yeah he did
But, in the end it’s what it says on the scoreboard. I’ll take 37 points and 8 assists and 11 turnovers if Ellis helps the Warriors win, and he did!

Anthony Morrow made the difference to me
Any time you can have one player go 6 of 8 from three point range, it opens up the offense so much more. It was great to see the other guys looking to get Morrow his shot in the context of the offense. Couple that with Monta’s driving ability, and that is problems for anyone trying to defend the pick and roll with Monta and Randolph. If they KEEP UP THE EFFORT AND INTENSITY, as well as continuing the excellent ball rotation we’ve seen the last couple games, this team can be pleasantly surprising in terms of record, and will be downright fun to watch regardless.
by LakerFan24 on Nov 24, 2009 11:25 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Morrow is definitely a difference maker
He really do make it easy for Curry and Ellis to get assists because it seems like anytime he takes a shot he makes it.
