Pounding the Rock Game Thread

Ok, I get it.  We're all little hyped up off of last night's victory.  I still am.  I still can't believe it.

I mean, I just finished the recap 5 seconds before starting this open thread.

RECAP: Warriors 111 Mavericks 103 - Wait..what just happened?

But let's be real...we've gotta a bigger challenge tonight.

Tim_duncan_medium

Star-divide

Yahoo Preview

Ok so, last night was amazing - no doubt.  We beat the Mavs with 6 players - 3 of which played all game.

But that's the problem.  They're going to be tired.  Back-to-back games with 8 active players is not a recipe for success.  CJ Watson's flying in, but he's still recovering from the swine flu.  Chris Hunter will probably see some time tonight as he was kept on the bench the whole game yesterday (...why?  I have no idea.)

No matter.  We always take the Spurs in San Antonio, right?

Since drafting Tim Duncan with the No. 1 overall pick in 1997, San Antonio has yet to lose to the Warriors at home, winning 22 in a row. Duncan has been on the floor for 21 of those victories, averaging 19.8 points, 12.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots.

Ruh roh...guess not.

Ok well, at least we have some things to make us laugh!

R Dizzle's Predictions (notice the similarities from last night)

  • Warriors by 2 - Coach Smart pulls in his first win! (Hey, it worked last night)
  • Tim Duncan scores 30 points (just a quick switch)
  • Monta Ellis comes down with a double-double
  • Chris Hunter crashes down with 8 boards
  • Anthony Morrow brings in 3 treys

GET WELL SOON COACH NELSON!

Their BIG 3 is too hard to handle

Their game plan would be getting us in foul trouble early. The Spurs are gonna feed it to Duncan a lot and drive to the hoop more often. The Spurs veteran defense might shake things up a bit for our offense, but our only chance now is to out-gun them for the whole game. BTW The dubs have to give the ball to Ammo more often, so he can get going early in the game :)

Vicious beating comming....

I cannot forsee any scenario not resulting in a brutal beatdown of our Warriors. Monta has to be tired and Moore against Duncan…oh lord.

Maggette or Watson to the rescue? Don’t think so.

Look at their record 6-6. Hardly the Spurs of old. Bring ’em on! Back to Back game on the road with a 7 man rotation. Perfect,,, right where we want them!

1. How are the Warriors in this game?

2. How is Monta Ellis playing like this after playing a full game yesterday??

Curry not playing well

i think he’s going through a “first time” period, where this is the first time he’s played against the spurs, so he doesn’t know what to expect and how to respond. It’s the same thing with the mavs yesterday.

So asking politely why you’re talking about trading Monta makes dubzfan a fanboy?

From what I’ve read of his posts, he generally comes off as a lot more mature and less “fanatical” than you, Brit. I know that’s not saying a lot, but still.

It’s about Monta’s clear beef with the FO, therefore an educated mind suggests he is doing what he can to possibly get out…..BASED on actions and comments.

I'm pretty pleased with the Warriors play in the first half

Our defensive effort lacks…effort, but Monta was on fire we’ve gotten the Spurs into an up and down game that favors the W’s more than them. Gotta figure the Spurs will double Monta in the second half, so we’ll need Curry and Morrow to hit their shots.

Monta Ellis is a HORRIBLE basketball player.

The Warriors WILL NOT WIN with this guy on their team. I don’t know that I have ever seen a more selfish player. The guy is an incredible talent and an incredible idiot. Has he passed once in the half?

My prediction. He cools off in a close game and shoots them completely out of it in the 4th.

Every bucket he makes is fool’s gold. It reminds me of when my Kings had a young Jason Williams and he would be hot early in a game taking 3s 5 seconds into the shot clock – no teammates involved and the inevitable cooling off.

Monta stinks.

by Badly Browned on Nov 25, 2009 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

Great effort for Warriors in the first half

But, not so much in the second half. Things that need to be worked on quickly is Stephen Curry has to stop telegraphing his passes when he wants to get it to a Warrior in a one on one situations.

Also, I kind figured the game was going to get out of hand after the incredibly dumb decision by Anthony Morrow to try to go one on four and Tony Parker got the steal and an easy layup.

Next possession for the Spurs Anthony Randolph didn’t do a good job of getting to Matt Bonner who nailed an open three. That’s really what got the Spurs the momentum dumb plays by the two Anthony’s!

Another thing is why are the Warriors putting the ball in Curry's hand?

I didn’t get it Ellis was getting to the rim pretty much at will, yet Keith Smart stupidly had Curry dominating the ball in the second half. Curry the one who was 1-7 in the first half and didn’t shoot much better in the second half.

There’s really no excuse especially since Smart could have used Hunter more, Randolph didn’t even get in until the second quarter, Watson was avaliable as well. Yes, but the difference between Ellis

Is the fact that Ellis could get to the basket at will and at times he’d get the ball stolen or dribble too much. With Curry it was just stupid passes that lead to points. Ellis’s turnovers last night didn’t hurt as much as Curry’s did tonight.

by Rocky63215 on Nov 25, 2009 7:51 PM PST up reply actions

Its not over...

Im guessing each team will have 2 possessions per minute…

With 8 possessions each way, if the warriors score every time and limit the spurs to 2 buckets… tie ballgame

BS calls all around

Parker is the most protected player in NBA after Lebron and Wade.

by Am22mO on Nov 25, 2009 7:54 PM PST reply actions

There's really nothing to study

Curry’s been looking directly at who he is going to pass the ball too or he’s forcing the pass in.

by Rocky63215 on Nov 25, 2009 7:56 PM PST up reply actions

Nice originality

Spend Sunday on NN talking about Alex Smith telegraphing passes, then just move over here and talk about Curry telegraphing passes. You gotta come up with something new eventually.

If Bochy coached the Warriors Bengie Molina would start every game at PG.

Curry has to make layups for a father with NBA experience

Curry is horrendous at driving to the hoop and making the layup!

Okay...

Me and my friend watching the game right now, noticed so many missed calls and bad calls… Seriously, I want to officiate one NBA game… I can do better than the sleezebags who referree every night…pathetic… Call the fouls for everybody, not just the best players on the home team… Im sick of this BS every single road game.

It's on Morrow

He didn’t get himself open and he can’t create his own shot.

by Rocky63215 on Nov 25, 2009 8:00 PM PST up reply actions

The only thing that curry did that took away from the Warriors

Were the telegraphed passes, but even with that the problem with Morrow is the he needs to get the scorer mentality and that means get to a spot and shoot.

by Rocky63215 on Nov 25, 2009 8:02 PM PST up reply actions

he can’t create his own shot.

you are definitely right. he needs to work on that. but there was a sequence where curry and monta were trying to jack up shots like the basketball Gods had their back. STUPID. look for the open man. we gotta a lot of other weapons. look for Morrow he is the best shooting weapon. dude. my computer is laggin. my memory is slow. i need a new comp. im done with this crap. GO WARRIORS STILL. SO WHAT! LOOK FOR MORROW! SO WHAT!

by dubzfan on Nov 25, 2009 8:00 PM PST up reply actions

Way to make excuses

It’s not that the Warriors don’t match up well with the Spurs it’s just that once the first couple of passes were made by the Spurs, the defense got too relaxed and allowed for Tony Parker to go anywhere he wanted too.

If the Warriors had backed off on Parker and dared him to shoot this may have been a different game. You’re talking about Parker who coming in tonight had been shooting 38 percent from the field.

by Rocky63215 on Nov 25, 2009 8:05 PM PST up reply actions

Very proud of our team

We’re not gonna be amazing every night. The effort out there is awesome though, considering all the crap we’ve been through so far this season.

by SigEpWarrior on Nov 25, 2009 8:02 PM PST reply actions

this makes me think of the game against the Hornets.

we made Paul a shooter. I wonder if that’s Spur’s game plan for Monta to be the shooter

by Shells on Nov 25, 2009 8:03 PM PST reply actions

The Question:

How does Monta score 42 and is -22 when Curry is only -7? Something doesn’t add up here.

If Bochy coached the Warriors Bengie Molina would start every game at PG.

Different night, different reason. What will the reason be next game?

If Bochy coached the Warriors Bengie Molina would start every game at PG.

by cybermaldonado on Nov 25, 2009 8:07 PM PST up reply actions

why are you relying on the +/- stat?

the stat is a reflection of how the team is doing, and is not always representative of the effect of the individual player

by IQofaWarrior on Nov 25, 2009 8:08 PM PST up reply actions

How easy

Curry turned the ball over a lot with Ellis on the court. When Ellis went to the bench the Warriors made a little bit of a comeback which boosted Curry’s plus or minus, but even with that Ellis should have been the one with the ball, not Curry!

by Rocky63215 on Nov 25, 2009 8:09 PM PST up reply actions

He still had the best +/- among the starters. Again…..

If Bochy coached the Warriors Bengie Molina would start every game at PG.

by cybermaldonado on Nov 25, 2009 8:06 PM PST up reply actions

that doesn't mean much when he was in there during the bench comeback

that forced the spurs starters back in. After all, CJ is +5 and Hunter is +7.

Curry looked dead from the over play in the last few games…
AR looked lost at all times…
Maggette ruined our offensive flow, running ISO’s for him KILLS us….
CJ looked horrrrrrrible on both ends of the court

Monta is da boss.

Curry has done well the past few games. I just can't believe he's a shooter today.

And he just not used to this much pressue.
AR doesn’t look lost. He’s like a ball hog.
I agree that when Corey came in and ball handling…OMG. terrible.
Forgive CJ. he just came back.

Monta is the da boss if that’s the plan of the Spurs.

by Shells on Nov 25, 2009 8:07 PM PST up reply actions

I’m sure the spurs planned for monta to dominate them the first half

the real issue tonight was that players were tired…and maggette is bad for this team

curry was clearly tired and had a lot of lazy bad pass turn overs…

maggette just doesnt fit on this team…wish we could trade him asap

explain to me this...

i am frustrated that there seems to be this pattern of steph not playing in the 3rd quarter and the other team going on a run that effectively puts golden state out of the game (see boston, tonight as glaring examples). steph has effectively shown that despite any sort of signs of fatigue or mistakes he makes during the game that they are anomalies in the grand scheme of the game, as he consistently has the highest +/- of the game of any starters. simply, when he is in the game his team is better. they pass more, they get better shots, they play better defense, and they don’t let previous mistakes affect them as much.

so tonight—the score is 72-75, 5:43 left in the 3rd, maggette comes in for steph.
steph comes back in with 2:08 left the warriors are down 78-86. while this is not a huge differential, during the time san antonio scores on 4/6 out of its possessions, golden state scores only 3/7 (missing the last 4). also, it essentially puts the warriors two bad possessions away from a TOTALLY winnable game being out of their hands.

probably a huge reason they manage to beat superior talent in dallas and portland is the fact that they had no ability to get steph out of the game for this period of time because of CJ watson’s sickness and maggette’s hamstring against dallas.

monta makes it very clear he should be in the game at all times because he scores. the warriors coaching need to recognize that steph is just as valuable on the floor as monta even if it is not tangibly evident. just look at the wins and losses.

by tcc on Nov 25, 2009 9:04 PM PST reply actions

curry played terrible

it was just a coincidence that the +/- turned out that way…

what really happened is that the spurs turned up their D and pulled off great full court press and traps at the end of the third..

our offense got stagnant and began trying maggs ISOs

curry was playing terrible all game…+/- is a terrible stat usually
