GAME THREAD #24: Warriors @ 76ers - Will the 76ers show the Warriors some brotherly love?
Golden State Warriors at Philadelphia 76ers, Dec 14, 2009 4:00 PM PST
(It's sweet to see Monta giving gifts out during the holidays, but lets hope he and the rest of the Warriors can give us fans the gift of a win tonight)
Warriors: 7-16
76ers: 5-18
Tip-Off: 4:00pm
TV: CSN Bay Area
Radio: KNBR 680
Sbnation Blog Buddy: Liberty Ballers
Happy Monday Warriors nation.
It's the beginning of a new (work) week. It's the holidays. The San Francisco 49ers are playing Monday Night Football.
Not only do you have variety, but if the Warriors are sucking, you have options for other entertainment during the evening. Unless the Niners are sucking, too, then, damn, we're out of luck.
The Warriors are at the end of their road trip and just in time. They're facing the Philadelphia 76ers, who struggling equally. But crappy teams, sans the New Jersey Nets, seemed to find a way to break out of their funk. Will the Allen Iverson versus Monta Ellis showdown tonight be like watching mirror images battling each other? Derrick Rose seems to think so.
Who will come out on top? Click for some predictions.
The Warriors are severely undermanned and under-talented. The 76ers, on the other hand, are somewhat more talented on paper, but with some mismatching parts. Which is the bigger problem though? The Warriors lack of depth looks like its become a bigger impediment than ever, especially as it forces Monta to dominate the ball leading to unforced turnovers.
Allen Iverson has been pretty average since rejoining his former squad, but I can guarantee that he will temporarily break out of his funk for one night to show us some of this:
Predictions:
- Warriors by -7
- Monta Ellis has 34, but also 9 turnovers.
- Stephen Curry has 15 points and 7 assists
- Elton Brand plays like he's in his twenties again: 28 points, 19 rebounds, and 4 blocks
- Allen Iverson gets tripped up for the 3rd game in a row, this time by Monta on a crossover.
(Monta Ellis this time around?)
What are your predictions for tonight's game?

It's hard to predict any WIN this year
Even if it is the Sixers. Hopefully Beans & Turiaf come back soon so we can start to really gauge where we’re at. But even then, we still wouldn’t be fully healthy with Buike & Wright gone for the season. Come to think of it, with all that said, as a Warrior fan everything is pretty normal right about now.

I'm not sure what to predict for this game
I’m worried that at some point, the players will give up after all these frustratingly close losses. Perhaps the players are holding out hope that the return of Biedrins and Turiaf will make them better. In any case, I’m going to go cynical and say the 76ers will break their 12 game losing streak on us.
Ssssshhhh now
It gives me more sleep when the game is on the East coast….lol

On another blog, I posted a comparison of Iverson’s career stats to Monta’s ‘09-’10 stats, per 36 minutes. (Not trying to troll for hits; I just can’t get the damn formatting to work over here. I’ll list the most salient points below.)
The conclusion: the Iverson/Monta comparison is extremely troubling if you’re a Warriors fan. Monta is playing like Iverson has over the course of his long career, with three major exceptions:
- Iverson passes much better (5.4 AST/3.1 TO to Monta’s 4.5 AST/3.8 TO)
- Iverson scores more points (23.5 to 21.7) with roughly equal efficiency (.518 TS% to .521)
- Iverson’s defensive numbers are better (105 Def Eff, to Monta’s 109)
Iverson has long been an overrated player… only in his best seasons has he surely been even one of the 20 best players in the league. And we’re not even comparing Monta to Iverson’s best seasons; we’re just comparing him to Iverson’s average performance, weak seasons and all. Monta still comes up far short. In fact, even at his brickiest, most turnovery worst, Iverson never had a season as ineffective as the one Monta’s currently having.
Moral of the story? Monta Ellis is not very good at being Allen Iverson. Let’s hope he reverts to being Monta Ellis.
comparison that we Dubs fans should find deeply troubling. Iverson was never quite as good as his reputation; by BBR’s Win Shares, he was never better than the tenth-best player in the league, and only one of the league’s twenty best players four times… very good, but thanks to his misses and turnovers, rarely great. And yet he rates much better than the current SuperMonta, passing much better, scoring more often and just as efficiently (a career .518 TS% to Monta’s current .521), and sporting better defensive peripherals (not shown here). And remember, we’re comparing Monta to Iverson’s average season… his best years are obviously better than this. In every year of his career, including last year, Iverson rated as more effective than Monta does this year. Iverson did enough good things to make up for all his misses and turnovers. Monta currently doesn’t, and that’s one of the biggest reasons we’re so bad so far.
Simply put, Monta Ellis is not very good at being Allen Iverson. Let’s hope he reverts to being Monta Ellis.

…pasting BLOOPER. There’s no point in reading past the “moral of the story” line.
Ladies and gentlemen, your Golden State Worriers.
PER 36 and Def Eff. is a stat for PER lovers
Monta isn’t really as turnover prone as people make him out to be. He’s not even in top 10 of PG’s in TOR.
+Are you really arguing that Iverson is a better defender? Pretty much stopped reading there.
…was going to point out several basic problems with your logic, but you’re the “Kobe is better than Lebron” guy, aren’t you? So let’s don’t bother. Have a good day, kitten.
Ladies and gentlemen, your Golden State Worriers.
Interesting
I’m guessing the main reasons are:
1) Both players need the ball in their hands to be successful.
2) Neither player is great at staying in front of quick guards and certainly cannot guard larger, stronger guards.
3) Neither player ever played with an elite big man (Dikembe Mutombo is borderline).
I can't take Mikki Moore starting anymore
I feel like I’m losing a War of Attrition against the front office. They’re doing everything possible to stop me watching these games.

I have a feeling Morrow finds his stroke and confidence this game.
Ideally I would love to see the 2 Anthonys, Curry, and Maggette all score 20+ tonight. I would also like Monta to be the reason for all their scoring. If Monta could get around 12 assists tonight, or dare I say around 18, and the above mentioned scorers find their offense, we could be poised to string together a bunch of impressive victories. We play the Spurs, Celtics, Suns, and Lakers all coming up. These games luckily are not in a row, nor do I expect us to win them all, but if we could somehow win 2 or 3 of those games mixed in with solid wins over other teams, we could get to .500 by the middle of January.
Back to reality, Morrow is gonna find his stroke tonight, which should give Monta another 2-5 assists. I don’t see anyone else finding there’s unfortunately. I just hope we see AR with Hunter for at least 15 miutes. CJ comes thru with solid offense again, Warriors make me happy and pull off the W by 8+ points.
I'm amped for this game for some reason...
I don’t know why.

Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"
my guess is that hunter is learning to assimilate new plays
and getting used to new stuff, and that’s making him look out of sync and out of position
I really dislike when Fitzgerald says the opponent has made everything like we are helpless and it just wasn’t our night. They are shooting 52%. That’s not everything. Stop blaming it on being unlucky, blame it on us not being good enough, or something closer resembling the truth. Because according to Fitzgerald, almost every time we are losing, it is because the opponents are having the night of their lives. The common denominator is us though.
Curry should be left on the bench for the remainder of the game
Unless the Warriors are trailing by 50 otherwise Curry should not see any playing time. He’s that awful!
i think opponents recognize morrow's pump fake
nobody’s biting
yeah, CJ has been looking real good out there for Curry right now huh?

God, this is going to be a tough decision, Niners versus Warriors. Warriors are fighting back just enough that they could make it interesting. They are not leading, so they probably won’t have the third quarter collapse mentality. I predict they fight back and then collapse in the fourth because they can’t close. So maybe I should just watch the Niners, unless it gets out of hand.

Don’t forget our 2 major league baseball teams that play with minor league offenses…
Oh, and we had the best MLS team to date in San Jose, but for some reason they moved them to Houston.
This all has to do with the fact that the men who run each professional league know that Bay Area fans support their squads regardless of wins or losses. Its nice to see A’s fans saving their money. That’s the only successful way to protest in a capitalist society, hurt the wallets of those in charge.
gswscribe
Sixers just released injury report saying Iguodala has rib contusion. X-rays neg. He will return. Is that why he’s 0-for-7?
I hate how Nelson/Smart ride their main guy regardless of how horrible they're doing. That's how you get coached out of games.
Last season they did it with Jack, tonight its Monta. Monta hasn’t been doing anything. Morrow looked like he found his stroke. But they took him out for Maggette. Monta can’t get it going, he’s hurting our play, so why play him? Morrow should have played half of Monta’s minutes.
Also, Mikki and AR have been our best players, why not play them together? Just because you plan your rotations before the game doesn’t mean you should stick to them, adjusting your pregame planning in accordance with the players that are performing is how you coach.
I’m just sick of Nellie and Keith using our lack of talent as a reason not to coach. “We don’t have the players to be good at defending and rebounding, so why try?” That’s a horrible attitude. I’m just glad Keith looks like he wants to coach, its too bad he can’t.
I wish Rick Barry and Nate Thurmond would coach us. They were both better players than Nellie, I’m not sure anyone understands the game better than Barry. Plus Nate could show our big men how to be successful with a lack of size by being smart players. If we want our players to fulfil their potential, we need new coaches.

Anthony Morrow is 2-for-3 for five points, showing signs that he’s breaking out of a 6-for-25 road slump. When asked about Morrow’s shooting woes before the game, Vladimir Radmanovic said, “Maybe he’s sitting next to me too much.” Radmanovic made only 11 of 40 shots during the first four games of the trip.

If Randolph is having a bad game, I could understand keeping him out. But he almost singlehandedly brought the Warriors back to close to being in it this game, which is something. I don’t understand what he has to do. It’s like they are saving him or something. I don’t see the long term benefit of punishing him with no playing time even when he is playing well. Save that for the games he is not playing well if you want to employ that strategy. Taking him out when he plays bad should motivate him. Taking him out when he plays at all should tell him there is nothing he can do.
This team should be kicked out of the league.

But again we were out coached….Smart didnt have a clue how to react to the double team on Monta…

monta's shoots been off
well, they have! wasn’t there a game where he was like 1 for 10? was that the nets game?
double team on ellis
and/or clogging the paint so he can’t drive at will should have been anticipated weeks ago, with counter measures developed. There are several obstacles to developing the counters, one of which is Ellis’ limited capacity to anticipate and envision both how the defense is sagging on him, and where his ‘mates are moving—he often just expects/demands they clear space for him to dribble. He has yet to develop consistent and smoothly functioning screen and rolls with the 4/5’s, which would force the defenses to alter their schemes. [and that means a slow re-adjustment when Biedrins and Turiaf are able to resume]. The other retardants to moving the ball away from the double teams and congestion are the limited passing/handling ability of both M’gette and Morrow, who put in the most minutes at the 3, and the under-utilization of Randolph. In sum, the offensive woes combine the weaknesses of Ellis, depending on him as the main guy, deficiencies in his “support”(another reliable scorer other than the unbalanced M’gette is sorely needed), and lapses of initiative on the part of the coaching staff.
in other words
we are severely under-talented.

What i find funny..
Is that Andre Iguodala had maybe the worst game of his career.. and we still lost by 17! I understand if the warriors want to be an offensive team and try and just outscore the opponent and i dont mind. But if your gonna play that style, you better as hell get 115 pts. a game.
I would rather...
See D LEAGUE players out there, giving 100% and fighting for the rebound, than these lazy sesspools of trash giving 10% and getting absolutely out-worked, out-hustled and flat out embarrased
Seriously....
Does Monta need to drop 40 for us to even stay close in games?
I’m really confused here.

Just go review some of iverson’s old games and it becomes clear.

we got out rebounded more than twice
and 22 more put backs i believe. Even if Monta had a monster game we would’nt win.
probably has more to do with being out rebounded 59 to 26.

wasn't really anybody in particular.
it was the lack of size and rebounding. Basically Young had more boards than our 2 starting big men
