Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Darko Time

The Warriors are down to so few healthy bodies that they have nothing to lose.  The Knicks would rather sign Jonathan Bender who hasn't played in 4 years than let him off the bench!  Think they'll ask for much?  Just send them expiring contracts back and a 2nd rounder 4 years from now if really need be.  We need healthy big bodies and this guy is healthy and big.  He has shown with the Magic and Grizz he can contribute and Nellie ball is as close to sharing the rock with everyone as it gets, which is what he wants.  Do I think he'll be a stud?  Not at all, but at least he plays D and attempts to rebound.  Much rather have him out there than Mikki Moore or Vlad missing 80% of his shots.

George and Claxton for Darko. If they want expirings.

George and Azubuike if they want something for next year.

I like Buike but he's only got next year left, coming off major knee surgery, will want a bigger contract after next season and we'll find out for sure this off season, but it seems like this team has already committed to Morrow as it's 2/3 of the future and will be handing him a contract.

Haha not saying that man, but I’m tired of seeing the Warriors get raped on the boards every night. Doesn’t hurt us right?

Oh and edit it would actually have to be Claxton and Buike for it to work contractually.

Why worry?

What’s to worry about? So what if he ends up being that bad? So is George. So is Claxton. Are we losing anything? No.

Given the situation we’re in (in which we no longer care about wins for their own sake) we’re freed from cheap temporary fixes and can focus on longer-term solutions. Darko is a band-aid. A band-aid that’s been used, torn off, and reapplied four times. We don’t even know if it’s sticky anymore.

by antihero on Dec 17, 2009 1:16 PM PST reply actions

Really? Is that why we have Vlad as our starting 4? And now even 5? When we have Chris Hunter and Anthony Randolph young, healthy and available to start? Doesn’t sound like much of a long term goal. George doesn’t play, Claxton won’t play. Darko could play. Enough said.

by Cdoleshel on Dec 17, 2009 1:48 PM PST reply actions

Many fans make the assumption that running Randolph 40 minutes a game is somehow conducive to his long-term development or in our long-term interests, which isn’t necessarily true. There’s also an irrational reverence for Chris Hunter around here. He seems like a fantastic dude, great cheerleader, but in all likelihood in the bottom 10% of NBA bigs and will remain as such for the rest of his career.

Claxton is as an expiring contract is worth more than Darko. A panicky move like this probably will take place, knowing the Warriors, but that shouldn’t mean we endorse it ahead of time.

Oh yea, and Hunter isn’t very good at all. He really can’t rebound even when he’s in position.

Sittin in my scraper watchin Oakland goin wild, ta-dow!

I’m not calling AR is ready for 40 minutes. If it will help his morale to start and play the same amount why not though? Anyone should be playing more than Vlad right now. Even Chris Hunter. I doubt Claxton is worth more than Darko right now. Darko can actually play and is healthy. Claxton isn’t. Unless you’re claiming the insurance deal on him.

BTW I’m actually not that high on Hunter. I am that down on Vlad right now though and the fact that we have no legit guy over 6’6" who is actually getting run who has a decent post game. Maggette is the closest we’ve got right now to a good post player.

Well, it could help his morale, or it could give him unwarranted confidence, or it could reinforce bad habits, or any number of things we can’t predict as fans.

Vlad should come around. You don’t get paid for 10 years as a shooter if you really can’t shoot. I agree that it’s depressing that nobody can post up, but hey, Monta is actually not bad down low. Who knew.

by antihero on Dec 17, 2009 3:29 PM PST up reply actions

I agree it could give him unwarranted confidence. Just like all the fans cheering like crazy every time he makes an ill advised move or takes a bad shot just because people are excited to see him doing something. Every time fans cheer something he does it reinforces the idea in his head that he is a star that is being held back. It might be true in the long run, but it’s not helping right now.

I think Vlad should come around too, but at best he is a soft 4. I like the D he has been playing for the most part and he has helped on rebounding some. However, I would gladly take any help without having to give up much. We should be fine when Turiaf and Biedrins come around, the season will still be lost but at least we’ll have size to compete better. How much will all the losing before then hurt the team though? Warriors are in a tailspin right now and the only thing saving them is Monta going off for 40 and the other team not playing well.

I’m not saying this is a franchise saving move people. Just something that can help. Maybe their trash is our recyclable material that’s all.

by Cdoleshel on Dec 17, 2009 4:09 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, the unconditional AR love needs to stop. Maggette and Vlad get so much crap from fans, and when Randolph does the same thing nobody says a word. Not to mention the love he’s gotten from national media who have been a little slow on the uptake. ESPN going “omg why isn’t AR playing, Nellie’s an idiot” every day won’t be good for his development.

As for Darko… he might help, but then again that’s what Detroit, Orlando, Memphis, and NY thought too. What are the odds that fifth time’s the charm?

by antihero on Dec 17, 2009 6:21 PM PST up reply actions

I like the idea of Darko

But we should just tough it out and wait for our bigs to return. The season has already gone down the drain and there’s no point in making a trade that won’t dramatically change anything.

I disagree there. If it’s a move that helps us rt a few more wins I’m all for it. Will it? Who knows, but it won’t cost us anything.

Listen I’m not saying he will average a double double, I’m not saying he’s a key player for a playoff run and I’m not saying let’s try and convince him not to go to Europe and offer a contract next year.

What I am saying is…

WE HAVE 0 HEALTHY TRUE BIG MEN, WE DON’T KNOW WHEN BIEDRINS AND TURIAF ARE COMING BACK FOR SURE, HIS CONTRACT EXPIRES AT THE END OF THE YEAR, HE IS 7’0", HE IS HEALTHY, HE BLOCKS SHOTS, HE REBOUNDS, HE CAN RUN, HE TRIES TO DEFEND, HE CAN PASS, HE WOULDN’T BE TAKING AWAY PF MINUTES FROM RANDOLPH, HIS CURRENT TEAM ISN’T PLAYING SO HE SHOULD BE EASY TO GET.

Some of you will say if he can do all that ten why isn’t he playing? I’m not sure. However, he did those things adequately for Memphis and Orlando and I think he could now.

I don’t know about you guys but right now I would love someone who could give us 8 and 5 in 20-25 minutes a game with a few blocks and some nice passes without taking some bad threes (insert Vlad here)

Point is he can help, even if he doesn’t do a lot.

Hopefully that cleared where I stand so we can get past pointless one line posts that don’t require any thought or analysis.

Good luck on getting people pumped about the late lottery.

The NBA isn’t about what you do, but how well you do it. That statement above could be referring to Darko or Pau Gasol, which leads me to believe it’s not very useful.

by antihero on Dec 18, 2009 4:09 PM PST up reply actions

The only reason to trade for Darko is to move Vlad’s 2 yr contract for Darko’s expiring.
