2010 Draft Scouting - GSoM Group Project

I had an idea for a GSoM project.  I thought it would be best to start this now, it's mid-december and college basketball conference play starts in January.  We know the Warriors are lottery bound again.  So how does everyone feel about picking 1 player (you can pick 2 if you are overzealous).  You're responsible for watching some games of theres, then towards end of year, we can each publish our own scouting reports.  We all know by march it'll be the main topic of discussion

Star-divide

http://www.draftexpress.com/

www.nbadraft.net

I'm gonna list the top 15 or so prospects.  People can comment on who they want.  Pick a player you're likely to watch.  IE if you go to a Big 10 school it'd b really cool if you picked a big 10 player cause you're more likely to get maximum exposure to them.  I left out internationals, but if you live in a foreign country or can watch them.  By all means, tell me and that'd be great!

1. John Wall- Memphis, Fr. -Consensus #1 pick.  No explanation needed

2. Derrick Favors- Georgia Tech, Fr. - Super Athletic power forward who often gets Josh Smith/Amare comparisons

3. Evan Turner- Ohio State, Jr. - The jack of all trades in this draft.  Plays PG on offense, PF on defense, but can he do it at NBA level?

4. Cole Aldrich, Kansas Jr.- Best Center in draft.  Can bang and rebound

4. Willie Warren- Oklahoma, So. - Possible best shooter in draft.  Undersized 2 who is a lot like Ben Gordon

5. Ed Davis- North Carolina So.-  Hard working Power Forward, who seems to be more of a team guy than individual playmaker

6. Al Farouq Aminu- Wake Forrest, So.- Forward Tweener with a mess of potential

7. Patrick Patterson- Kentucky, Jr- Super athletic undersized 4 who seems to be expanding his range

8. Wesley Johnson, Syracuse, Sr. - SF who can SHOOT and is athletic, might be best NBA SF prospect

9. Xavier Henry, Kansas, Fr.- Shooting Guard who can shoot and plays very good defense

10. Stanley Robinson- Conneticutt, Sr. - Another Tweener with very good athletism and a defender

11. Devin Ewbanks, West Virginia So.- Small foward I honestly don't know much about

12. Solomon Alabi- Florida St. So.- Could become an awesome defensive presense inside

13. Greg Monroe- Georgetown, So.- Best passing big with a ridiculous amount of potential

14. Craig Brackins- Iowa St. Jr.- A 6-10 PF/C who can shoot (ssshhh don't tell nellie!)

15. Kyle Singler- Duke Jr.- uh oh a dukie!  But really could be a young grant hill type... or dunleavey

16. Avery Bradley- Texas, Fr.- Insanely quick, unsure if he'll declare but if he does he is considered top 15

17. Arnett Moultrie- UTEP, So- A PF with good post defense

18. DeMarcus Cousin- Kentucky, Fr.- Another big with ALOT of potential.  Should get alot of exposure playing with J.Wall

Are there any other top prospects we want to scout????  Since I get first pick, I'll refrain from obvious and go with Ed Davis.  I like UNC's style of play and ESPN shows them enough I can write an informed peice

TafkaSam- Ed Davis

BoJangles408- Evan Turner

Dubzfan- Wesley Johnson

The Dedication- Stanley Robinson

Cap'n Hack- Greg Monroe

Sam23-Cole Adrich

Zorgon- Willie Warren

NHlogan- Derrick Favors

SPENCEMAN- Xavier Henry

ejdacanay- John Wall, Patrick Patterson

Good call...

starting this earlier this year so we can actually track them throughout the college season. I look forward to reading some of our own members takes on these guys. I would volunteer, but considering that I never wrote the one I volunteered to do last year, I’ll just sit this out.

that depends

on how you feel about anthony randolph, especially if he becomes even more consistent with his mid range jumper and passing, randolph feeding beanz from the post is a nice thought…i think a lineup of

C Beanz
PF Randolph
SF Turner
SG Ellis
PG Curry

would be dynamic, especially if you’ve ever seen this kid Turner pass. I think dude could be pretty much Joe Johnson if his back doesn’t mess him up too much. He can finish, he’s got height, and he plays a good defensive game. if we got any pick aside from the 1st pick (obviously wall) and he was on the board, I’d definitely pick him up, he’s going to be a good NBA player.

As far as a low post offensive threat, I don’t think we would ever use it under Nellie’s system. We would be better off with a low post offensive threat at center I guess, which is what Beanz was supposed to be, we’ll see when he gets back, I’m having trouble even remembering how good he was now.

Quick question

How are we going to publish it?Fanposts? I just want to know how this is all going to work. I want Wesley Johnson.

Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"

by dubzfan on Dec 18, 2009 1:59 PM PST reply actions

hadn't thought that far ahead. Yeah Fan posts.

Maybe time them to publish once every 3 days? Maybe one of the mods can figure a section out so they all link.

by tafkasam on Dec 18, 2009 3:40 PM PST up reply actions

Every three days is a bit much

Players may not even play in three days. Maybe we can watch them for a month or something like that, turn in a quick scouting report to someone to post in a fanpost. Maybe like for people who are scouting guards they can have a big post about the guards with scouting reports. This would mean someone would have too get everyones post through E-mail or something like that and post it all by position.

Yeah we need a real 3 besides Buike. We cen’t just keep on playing Morrow at SF. He’s a 2.

by GSWarrior18 on Dec 22, 2009 9:36 AM PST up reply actions

No i meant don't publish TILL march (maybe even april post tourney)

then say April 1, April 4, April 7 etc.

Or option B…. 1 a week, from now till end of year?

by tafkasam on Dec 18, 2009 3:57 PM PST reply actions

I like the 1st option much better

I say post tournament and a week or 2 leading up to draft day.

I go to Marquette

I’ll do Stanley Robinson when we play them. I could do it now, but I’d rather wait and watch another game with him in.

shoot, living in big ten country, i was hoping to grab turner, but monroe is interesting and far enough down the draft board where i won’t feel like a heel if i don’t see enough of him to give a good scouting report. i better start watching some hoyas games.

by tafkasam on Dec 20, 2009 9:29 AM PST up reply actions

Gordon Hayward?

I know he is in a weaker division being at Butler but this kid has the size and smarts to be a pretty good mid to late first rounder (which we might be). He is not the strongest or the quickest but has a sweet outside stroke and is 6’8" 200, can play either wing position and sucks up rebounds like nobodies business.

he sounds interesting. i’d actually like to see people give scouting reports on some lesser known possibilities. come spring, we’ll beat to death every topic on every player in the top ten, might as well broaden the horizons (no horizon league pun intended).

And if anyone wants to scout lesser known or foreign players i’m ALL for it. I didn’t list any on here just cause i didn’t think people would be able to watch them. If you see seattle u and can tell us about charles garcia for ex. By all means.

I disagree with a lot of this

Wes Johnson is a top 5 prospect easy and Wayne Ellington comparisons are way off. Monroe and Davis are not going to be top 10 picks, Monroe most likely has fallen out of the lottery. Aldrich and Patterson that low are simply crazy. The fact he lists Wes as a part time 4 and calls him a guard shows how off this guy is. He is a pure small forward with some 2 guard skills. Think of a mix of Shawn Marion and Danny Granger.

dunno that he’s as explosive/quick as a young marion (few are) but he is pretty althetic in general and can score every way possible. Granger is a nice comparison….

Wrong on Cousins

It’s articles like this that make me think there’s a real Warrior opportunity to land Cousins. He has a national media rap that is undeserved—and between Wall at number 1 and Cousins there is not one player I’m convinced will be a better pro than Cousins. See my comment below.

I would do one....

but I have to follow 2 NBA teams, so I have no time to follow a guy in college. Besides, the only guy I could watch on a consistent basis would be Willie Warren, and he’s taken.

Still, it’s a great idea, and I can’t wait to see the results!

Devin Ebanks and WVU playing Seton Hall now.

DE has now goaltended a layup, saved the ball under his own hoop to allow a Seton Hall player to lay up, taken some questionable shots. Dude makes Mickael Pietrus look like Albert Einstein out there.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

I told Randolph that Bill Russell would tell him to keep that ball in play and start the break.

Greg Monroe

Caveat – I went to Georgetown so I’m definitely biased. That being said, I’m a big Warriors fan (unfortunately) and can separate the 2. For instance, I would never have suggested the Warriors draft Roy Hibbert, b/c his game would not work with what Nellie likes to do. Jeff Green – we could use him. Monroe, we’d be truly lucky to have him.

Greg Monroe, simply put, is exactly what the Warriors want and need. He’s a smart, well-rounded, super talented 4. He shoots the 3 well. He’s a great passer. He has a high basketball IQ. And, unlike some bigs on our team (I’m looking at you, Randolph) he knows how to box out and get a rebound the easy way. If he decides to come out and he’s available for our pick I think he’d be a great guy to grab. Trouble is, I think he’ll play himself into a top-5 pick this year. He’s kind of comparable to Chris Webber in that he’s a biggish bodied 4 with small man skills. He’s a guy Nellie would play and could actually play right away with non-shooting bigs. This means he could play with Biedrins or with Randolph (if you don’t think Randolph has a good jumper). We could also go big with him in a lineup that would have him playing with Randolph and Biedrins/Turiaf.

transition makes me feel alot more comfortable w/ georgetown bigs translating to NBA game. I’m with you this guy is highly intriguing…….

by tafkasam on Dec 28, 2009 2:35 PM PST up reply actions

Scouts doubt his motor.

And as a general rule of thumb, Bigs without a pulse rarely succeed. Monroe is really skilled though, sort of similar to Speights in the questions that surround him.

we'll need to see how he does in pre-draft camps

Georgetown’s system lends itself HAR to evaluate bigs. Remember Hibbert? People said unathletic bust.

First off i think he’s showing he has ability to be an NBA starter and w/ continued growth a high end one. Second what’ surprised me is he reall isn’t as unathletic as advertised. Is he Dwight HowarD? No… but he isn’t adonal either

by tafkasam on Dec 28, 2009 10:57 PM PST up reply actions

DeMarcus Cousins

I live in Kentucky, but in another life, I lived in California. Hence I’ve been a Warrior fan since the last title (god that was a long time ago) and I get to see every Kentucky game.

Not much chance that the Warriors will get the ball to drop so they can land Wall (absolutely the best college player in the last decade), but if they were smart they’d take that number 4 or 5 position in the draft and pick DeMarcus Cousins.

Right now Cousins averages more points than minutes played, routinely picks up double-doubles, rarely misses his free throws, runs the floor like a deer and can rebound with anyone in the nation. Yet most Kentucky fans will tell you that he has yet to put in a really complete game, that eventually he’ll become absolutely dominant. He’s really just a kid; much less mature emotionally than Wall, but he has an upside almost equal to Wall’s. If he stayed at Kentucky for his sophomore year I think he’d have a good chance of being the #1 pick when he did come out. As it is, he might slip lower in the draft than he should and somebody is going to get really lucky.

I hope it’s the Warriors.

the biggest knock on cousins

has been lack of explosiveness/athleticism. A lot of scouts compare him to Andray Blatche who is a good big, but by no means great. It’s hard to tell for me, cause in college that big leaping ability, athleticism is not necessary but we know it’s a different story in the pro’s unless you are a VERY special player

I have a hard time thinking every scout would miss something on a 6-11, 260 lb guy. On size alone he should be a top 10 prospect, and he isn’t meaning there is some holes in his game. Is he a better prospect than Randolph or Wright or Biedrins for that matter????

by tafkasam on Jan 3, 2010 10:31 AM PST up reply actions

I like Cousins aswell however

I dont know if Demarcus Cousins could take the verbal from Nellie. Its a big difference between Coach Cal and Nellie. And i wouldnt wanna draft Cousins over Evan Turner.Turner is the 1 person in the draft besides Wall and Favors that i think could be a star in the league instantly. If we picked up Cousins it would only be in the middle of the 1st round but i wouldnt take him if we got a top 5 pick.

by J-RIDAH on Dec 31, 2009 7:31 PM PST reply actions

Greg Monroe and Patrick Patterson

Both have boatloads of potential. Patterson is my favorite outta these. Of course there are better players such as Wall or Turner, but I think Patterson or Monroe would be the best bet for a future successful team
