Steinmetz: Nelly gives Randolph his blessing
For a guy who supposedly doesn't like Anthony Randolph, Warriors coach Don Nelson is about to give him more offensive freedom than he does most second-year players he's ever coached.
At least that's what Nelson says.

Great read, rec
Now maybe all the Randolph worshipers can stop blaming Nellie for not playing Randolph at the 4, because he will once Biedrins and Turiaf return.
Nobody’s blaming Nellie for not playing Randolph at the 4… people are blaming Nellie for not playing Randolph enough. That may be changing, but this interview certainly isn’t proof of that… it’s not like Nellie commits to starting the guy or anything. He talks vaguely about expanding Randolph’s responsibilities, but what does that prove? Must we go back through the archives and point to the eight or nine times Nellie announced that he was giving Brandan Wright a longer leash last season?
It’s a waste of time trying to divine anything from Nellie’s interviews; he lies, he exaggerates, and commits to strategies he deviates from mere hours later. And I’m not even saying that in a critical way, as I like Nellie’s approach towards the media. I’m just saying, the only proof of shifting strategies will come on the court, not through a microphone. Randolph’s 36 minutes the other night are a very positive sign. We’ll see where things go.
The only news of real merit in this article:
Andris Biedrins (strained abdominal muscle) and Ronny Turiaf (sprained left knee) both participated in parts of practice…
Depends on what parts of practice, of course — if they only participated in the part where you say your favorite color, this doesn’t mean much. But if they’re both able to do even a few physical things right now, that’s a massively encouraging sign.

That too. But there are some who blame Nellie for playing Randolph at the 5 because Randolph’s not supposed to play at the 5. They forget that Randolph was supposed to start at the 4 before the season started.

I'd say we all have bad feelings from Smart's rotations.
I haven’t been too mad at Nellie this year for not playing AR.
Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.
I told Randolph that Bill Russell would tell him to keep that ball in play and start the break.
RANDOLPH: "I know. But sometimes, you gotta let ‘em know."
(MT)
Interesting
He doesn’t like giving him heavy minutes when Beans and Ronny are out but says he will once they are back? I’m confused.
Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"
It wasn't about minutes
it was about responsibility. Based on what Matt wrote, I think Nellie’s been training Randolph on how to handle the point and how to look for and pass to the right player on the offensive side. Nellie said that opponent centers don’t get in your face, so that would give more room for Randolph to look around and handle the ball from the point spot. We saw a couple of examples of point center plays from Randolph in the Wizards game.
In a recent Nellie interview or radio show, he said that Randolph’s stamina was a concern, so I still don’t expect Randolph to start at the power forward, so he should still be a backup instead.
However, the exciting thing to see is if Randolph can play the backup POINT forward, not power forward. That is a whole new dimension for Randolph, mentally, so he’s going to need to stay in the backup role and get used to thinking as a POINT forward before he can challenge today’s starting opponent power forwards.

I understand that part
But with Moore, Vlad and Hunter you’d think he would get more run then he did.

This should be Exhibit A in the case against putting any stock in what Nellie says in interviews. One day, Nellie claims that Anthony Randolph’s stamina is an issue, and that you can’t put him out there for more than ten or twelve minutes at a stretch. The very next day, he played Randolph for 36 minutes, including all but 23 seconds of the second half.
The old man likes talking out of his ass… his comments should be used for entertainment purposes only. If Anthony Randolph doesn’t re-join our starting lineup, Nellie’s concerns about his conditioning will not be the reason why.

In fairness, that statement wasn’t that recent. I think the gassed after 4 minutes statement is true, but is a byproduct of Nellie. Partly b/c AR wants Nellie’s approval so badly & partly b/c he knows he has to make his minutes count, Randolph used to use up all his energy flying around in the game being super active.
you can see that he plays much more actively in Nellie coached games than those Smart has coached. he averages 13.3 pts & 7.5 rebounds in 23.8 minutes under Nellie while averaging only 8.3 pts & 4.8 rebounds in 21.1 minutes under Smart.
would rather see AR start too, but as long as he’s getting ~30 minutes consistently, I’m okay with that.

Nellie reiterated the 10-12-minute ceiling thing when talking to Ralph and Tom on Thursday. Other than that, agree on all counts. I don’t care if Randolph never starts, as long as he’s getting long stretches every night.

I can't wait 'til its
Curry/Watson
Ellis/Morrow
Buike/Bell
Wright/Randolph/Vlad
Goose/Turiaf/Hunter
Anthony Randoph for Most Improved Player
id rather have
Ellis/Curry

Goose/Turiaf

Is there a heaven for a Rap Cat, let's talk
Why ???!!!
We’re not competing for the playoffs, Bell is gonna bolt at season end. The best thing is to develop Curry and AR. Right now I think the lineup should be
Curry/Watson
Ellis/Morrow
Radmanovic/Morrow
Randolph/Hunter
Biedrins/Turiaf
Small backcourt….No problem, let’s make up for it in the frontcourt
I really think we are going to resign Bell if we don’t trade him. Having a Kobe stopper on the team will help us a ton, especially since he can knock down the 3 too.

So would I
But as long as Nelly is coach Bell would see more time at the 3. That’s if he comes back. He should be around for the last few months of the season though.
Anthony Randoph for Most Improved Player
|I hope
this is true. If Randolph can delevop a low post game with his improving jumpshot while continuing to show passing ability we may have a perfect PF with our Center Andris. We can only hope.

Pretty much everything Nellie ever says is laced with ulterior motives. I think at this point he probably wants to give AR more responsibility, but even more than that he wants to see if AR is actually ready to handle it. By stepping out and saying something like this, he puts the onus on AR to perform. It’s pretty simple manipulation of a young player’s mental game and it will give Nellie cover to not play AR if he doesn’t step up. If he does start playing more consistently, then Nellie will seem validated in his approach. I for one am really, really excited to see AR at the 4 with a real center next to him. The fact that he has been playing the 5 can only work to our benefit because it has forced him to focus on the aspects of his game that he truly excels at (rebounding, rebounding, and uh, rebounding).
Sittin in my scraper watchin Oakland goin wild, ta-dow!
Can't Help Wondering...
Could this just be a ruse to present AR as a more attractive trading commodity? Hope not, but why is management suddenly flip-flopping?
