Trades That Would Actually Work II

The purpose of the trades from the previous post was to clear cap room so we can build around Monta. Corey Maggette’s contract will not be taken off of our hands unless we give up someone young and good to go with it. Brandan Wright does not qualify because he can’t stay healthy and Randolph doesn’t get to play. Yes he started against New Orleans but that was only his second start of the season. It took 27 games for the coaches to realize he should play.

Randolph can’t be the future if he doesn’t get to play or want to stay with this team. Why would he? He hadn’t been starting because of Vladimir Radmanovic.

 Vladimir Radmanovic.

If Randolph is finally starting when we’re 7-21 then he is expendable. By the way, what is with this obsession we have of thinking all our young players are "untouchable" when their own coaches won’t even play them? Yes they have potential but does anyone truly believe that they will realize it with the Warriors? Monta Ellis has realized his potential and continues to build on it even as we speak, yet nobody wants to give him cap room? Because you don’t want to give up Stephen Curry and Anthony Randolph!

Still want to keep Curry over Amar’e Stoudemire?

Curry is putting up 12 points and 5 assists a game. Really? Untouchable? "He’s the future, he’s going to be a star, and he’s the next Steve Nash!" I get it, yeah I really do. Keep in mind though that this is the same franchise that traded Tim Hardaway.

20 & 10 Tim Hardaway! Do you really think Curry will ever get to that level? While playing next to Monta? Let’s be realistic. By the way, when Nellie finally retires (because he’s not going to this year and he might not next year) what coach in his right mind would play Curry and Ellis together?

We need to build around Monta right now. Not later, not soon, now. Have you even seen the games this year? When is the last time you saw a 6’3" guard with a post game? Monta is playing out of his mind this year and it shouldn’t be put to waste. If you can think of some better trades, by all means, be my guest.

But if we made those trades our lineup would look like this the rest of the year.

 PG-Monta Ellis

SG-J.J. Redick

SF-Anthony Morrow

PF-Brandon Bass

C-Whoever else Nelson wants to insert so that we don’t resemble an actual team.

You can’t tell me this team would do worse than 7-21. We’d have tons of cap room for the biggest summer in free agent history, plus were going to end up with a high draft pick this year as well.

Because Curry isn’t Steve Nash and Randolph doesn’t get to play if you haven’t noticed.

If you mean by "Monta is playing out of his mind" that he's turning the ball over A LOT

then you are right. But if you really think Monta is worth building a team around him then you might get a reality check. Volume shoters who lead the league in turnovers can not be the centerpiece of the winning franchise. But if you want the Warriors to be just what they were/are for the last 15 years then he will be just fine.

If u look at the stats

League leaders in turnovers and fga per game are almost all the superstars: lebron, kobe, nash, etc…not saying that that is a good indication or that monta is the complete answer but usually when these suparstars are handling the ball, those will happen. Just look at tonight, lebron with 7 to and Kobe with 31 fga…..

by scraider3 on Dec 25, 2009 11:40 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

It’s true that the league’s tops in TOs and FGA are among the best in the game, but this is a situation where they are the best because when they are not turning the ball over, they’re able to get a large number of assists or score efficiently. Presently, Monta is not doing that. He is turning the ball over while doing significantly less positive with it the rest of the time than many of the other players in the league leaders in TOs.

“Just look” and citing a single game is hardly a good way to judge something. Anecdotal evidence, picking and choosing particular singular examples, is a terrible and highly misleading way to go about things.

Solutions?

First off I think you should change your username because it doesn’t apply. Second of all Nash’s four year averages follow:

PPG APG
7.2 4.0

Nash’s first season was a mitigated disaster, and everyone thought he was an absolute bust. But lo and behold he became a great offensive point guard (his defense is still atrocious.) Be patient with Curry, I’m not saying that he will turn out to be Nash but to average 12 and 5 in his first season is not bad. He is progressing game by game.
Secondly, your trades are an absolute joke and they make us worse in every way. Let’s stay the course and see if getting our center’s will help our team. It will help to get our player’s back to our natural positions and undoubtedly help our rebounding, that is all.

Monta
Redick
Morrow
Bass
[Random crappy C]

You can’t tell me this team would do worse than 7-21.

I can tell you that’s quite likely the worst starting five in the NBA. And that no one in their right mind would rather have that starting five than, for example, Curry-Monta-Morrow-Randolph-Biedrins.

Whether Randolph plays enough or Curry will be the next Nash are subjects on which reasonable can disagree. The fact that your “trades that would actually work” are short-sighted, pointless and laughable is something on which almost all reasonable people would agree.

Please stop spamming the board?

There will be no extra point!

+1

This team couldn’t even put up the “illusion” of defense. I guess this works if you’re trying to build the team the way Toronto and Washington have (Horrendous defenders at almost every starting position).

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

I told Randolph that Bill Russell would tell him to keep that ball in play and start the break.

RANDOLPH: "I know. But sometimes, you gotta let ‘em know."

These are the type of players you build your team around:

DWade
Lebron
CP3
Nash
Kobe
Dirk
Bosh
KG
& etc.

Ellis isn’t on that level, and it’s not even that close.

So what we need to do is trade for someone like that, sign someone like that, or draft someone like that. (Reminder: Ellis has spent the last 5 years showing us that he ISN’T at that level.)

Randolph and/or Curry could be that good, or could not be, it’s too soon to tell. So we hold onto them and wait and see. That’s it.

Are you really implying that you’re willing to give Monta Ellis more than 5 years to become that good, but you’re not willing to give Steph Curry even one full year to show us what he’s got?

He was never expected to be this good :/

He was a late 2nd round pick out of high school.

No

Do you know why you have a “Trades That Would Actually Work II”? Because the first post didn’t work out, just like this one doesn’t.

We need to build around Monta right now. Not later, not soon, now. Have you even seen the games this year? When is the last time you saw a 6’3" guard with a post game? Monta is playing out of his mind this year and it shouldn’t be put to waste. If you can think of some better trades, by all means, be my guest.

I have seen the the games this year, have you? The reason why Monta is “playing out of his mind” this year is because he takes a lot of shots and plays a lot of minutes. Yes, he’s getting 25 points per game, but he takes as much shots as LeBron does. Not only that, but his assist to turnover ratio is 5/4.3, which is bad especially for a guard that calls himself a “point guard”. In addition to that, he caught the Stephen Jackson virus which allows him to complain and whine every time he gets a foul called on him.

Curry is putting up 12 points and 5 assists a game. Really? Untouchable? “He’s the future, he’s going to be a star, and he’s the next Steve Nash!” I get it, yeah I really do.

We’re not even half way through the season, and you’re already calling out Stephen Curry? He seems fine to me. Maybe you should watch Warrior games more often because he plays good, and keep in mind that he is a rookie. In addition, when Steve Nash started off he averaged 3 points 2 assists per game. Nash did not receive much playing time, but next couple seasons he began to sprout, so why call out Curry so early? This is his first season, be patient and let him develop. I’m happy the way he plays even if his stats aren’t to your expectations.

Why would you want that lineup? I rather stick with the lineup the Warriors have now. Not only that, but you can get way better players from Randolph and Curry. Bass is a good PF, but not Randolph good, and Curry for J.J. Redick? Really? Anthony Morrow > Redick all day everyday. Redick was an overrated draft pick that the Magic probably wish they could take back. He comes out of college who makes history in the NCAA and now barely gets playing time. He is nowhere close to Curry, Curry is the better shooter, and can do much more than Redick. With that lineup, that team wouldn’t be a “rebuilding” team. That team would just suck; suck more than the Warrior’s current roster.

by DubsFan408 on Dec 25, 2009 10:30 PM PST reply actions

Dear God NO!!

That Lineup is terrible!!

Sorry Anthony Morrow, but you and Redick are like the same player. 3-point shooters trying to be more, though Morrow is waaaaayy cooler. Our backcourt gets posted up a lot, but the Ellis/Redick backcourt will ALSO get posted up a lot.

I like Brandon Bass but I’d much rather prefer him in a 6th man role where he would come in depending on the situation and help the team with his strength and bulk. He reminds me of a slightly better Ike Diogu but he is still someone you don’t want as a starting PF yet, he hasn’t proved anything.

“Random Crappy C”… you mean someone like Mikki Moore?? Oh god, that lineup sounds even worse now.

FYI, Randolph doesn’t get starter minutes because he is foul prone. Radmanovic is a veteran and knows the nuisances of the game. He does a better job of staying in the game. Once Randolph doesn’t leap at every pump fake and get called a foul on, he will be on the floor for heavy minutes.

Secondly, what makes Nash so good now?? It’s because he always plays with a good big man. Imagine if Nash ran the pick n roll with Mikki Moore or someone as bad. Can’t be done. How can Curry play like Nash without having a good big man alongside. Curry is like Nash in that they have good court vision, can his the 3 and will most likely be defensive liabilities for their careers. I don’t see how you’ve given up on Curry one-third through his rookie year. At least give the rookie a change after Biedrins comes back a full strength. I’m waiting to see the Curry-Biedrins picknroll series >:)

Cap room, and building around Monta.

Cap room is only worthwhile if you can sign players who improve your team with it, and all these trades end up shedding so much talent that it would take miracle signings (Chris Paul, LeBron James, etc) to make up for it.

The funny thing is you’d be clearing cap room which you’d immediately have to spend to get players to do what the guys you traded away did. You want to trade away Biedrins for cap room? Where are you going to get that rebounding from? How much do you think you’re going to have to pay for a player better than Biedrins, compared to what we pay him?

Before you say that Curry isn’t Steve Nash, you should look at Nash’s early season statistics.

The issue isn’t that certain players are “untouchable.” It’s that trading away talent for cap room is a stupid strategy unless you also have a clear plan to use that cap room to get better talent.

And that’s what’s missing from this whole thing. Who you gonna sign? You think Lebron is coming to a team with a roster as denuded as the one you just created? You think Bosh or Stoudamire has any interest in coming to a team which traded away the guy who’s his rebounding help and defends the bigger opposing player?

“Trade away our talent so maybe we can make a run at a free agent” is a stupid strategy.

I am open to trading every single player on our roster, so long as we get back equal or better talent in the long term. (eg, no trading away young players for one-season upgrades).

Your plan is to gut the roster on a pipe dream.

I think people need to get off the Curry->Nash comparisons

Odds are that he won’t be that good, and he will probably play better defense.

NEWS FLASH:

early in his career, Steve Nash averaged:

1st season: 3.3ppg 2.1ast
2nd season: 9.1ppg 3.5ast
3rd season: 7.9ppg 5.5ast
4th season: 8.6ppg 4.9ast

yea, steph curry sucks for a rookie! not.

Gotta disagree

I like Monta as a player, though I would like the ball out of his hands more, and would rather he shot a little less, and passed little more. But I feel your excitement, cause every game there is at least two drives to the lane that are amazing, where I’m like how’d he make that.

But to your point, I just don’t think cap space/free agency is the way for them to go.

Out of all the free agents out there i don’t think the W’s would be anyone’s top choice.
So we would get the leftovers, or have to overpay for a good but not great players.

As far as our young players, I don’t think they’re untouchable, but I dnt think we should dump them just for cap space. If they felt they needed to go the trade route, I would rather we traded our young players for a superstar rental, and a draft pick where we at least had the opportunity be the highest bidder in free agency, and the draft pick as some protection for losing the young player. I’m not against risk, but there has to be some protection.

Curry is pretty decent for a rookie, been liking his play lately, and he will get better

Randolph’s game may not be pretty, but he seems to get his numbers more than not, I would want to see more before we just dumped him, my hope is Randolph can outlast nellie, so we can see how he plays for different coaching staff.

Can you

tell me why everyone forgets the days when A.I and Eric Snow played together in philly. A small back court that had numerous playoff runs and a championship shot. I don’t understand the curry ellis knock. they play well together despite the height. steph is solid as a ROOKIE and monte is a STAR. Our swingman can shoot the 3 but that is about it still love the man and he will win the 3-point shoot out. Randolph should have been starting from the start, as he showed in the recent game. trade maggette, I love him off the bench but he can go and the rest are basically bench players beside biens. I would draft wing or big. dump maggette and right and make a run at all-star free agent. but that is just my opinion.
