GAME THREAD #31: Golden State Warriors @ LA Lakers- From the Yay Area to Holly-hood
Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Lakers, Dec 29, 2009 7:30 PM PST

Anyhow these back-to-back wins were so great that they vaulted/ launched/ sky-rocketed the Warriors to 26th place in this week's edition of the SB Nation NBA Power Rankings which are hot off the presses (or mouse clicks- what's the digital equivalent?).
Sure the Warriors are in the "Dregs of the League" category, but at least they're not in the "Worse than the Dregs of the League" category (that would be the Rock-a-fella Nets). Progress fellas. That's what I like to see. At this rate we'll miss the playoffs with 48 wins in no time!

Thoughts about Last Night
Monta "J" Ellis
The most impressive part about Monta's 37 points last night was how his jumper was just sailing into the basket. It's like the clock was turned back to February 2008. He was stopping on a dime and knocking down midrange J's at will. Smooth. Real smoove.
C-Jay- it's yo birthday! It's yo birthday! It's yo birthday!
I questioned the C.J. Watson re-upping this past summer. He is not a point guard by any definition and is one of the worst defensive players in the league. His ceiling seems to have already been reached.
But last night- man oh man. C.J. was the man. He was an absolute thief with SEVEN steals and a block last night. He was picking the Celtics out on the perimeter and taking it to the house like Deion Sanders back in 1994. +20 for the game ain't no joke.
C.J. last night.
via www2.yk.psu.edu
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Watson is a much better player than Stephen Curry right now. He should be starting over Curry till that changes- which I believe it will, but just reward the man already. Nellie's meritocracy is how we do things around these parts.
Andris Biedrins is Not Ready
God good Biedrins was awful last night. That was quite possibly the worst matchup for him to come back to from such a long absence too. Kendrick Perkins in particular ate him up for lunch and spit him out. Tonight isn't going to be any easier against the Lakers big and bigger. I'd bench the man to avoid killing his confidence. He's going to need a few games to get back to being an elite rebounder and tonight's just not the night.
Anthony Morrow passes to... Corey Maggette for 3?!
(See Warriors Web Links for the 411)
Thank goodness the Warriors didn't lose that one. Chocolate Rain, Ammo- SHOOT IT my good man. SHOOT and ask questions later.
Allow me to introduce you too... Ammo + Chocolate Rain
Puh-leaze do not let that happen again... ever!
But props on the diversified scoring and hustle last night.
Thoughts about Tonight
Holly-
Ebok... Ebok... Ebok...
The Lakers are in town and that means the reigning NBA Finals MVP will be in town. Say what you want about Ebok, but this guy works extremely hard and is supremely gifted. Putting aside Eagle Rock, how can you not respect game?

Predictions
- Lakers OWN the glass and win the battle of the boards by 10
- +/- on Derek Fisher flops = 4
- Anthony Morrow doesn't pass up a wide open trey to get the rock to Corey Maggette for a three point attempt.
- Ron-Ron runs into the stands to beat up some annoying Faker fans, but then trips, falls, and hurts his other elbow.
- Warriors by 1 (Mean Team wins- unless MJ comes to save the Dubs to net a 3 game win streak!)

Tony-that picture of Kobe, Artest and Pau reaching for 40s is classic!
Atma- you are a hater. Biedrins plays his first game after being out for two months, and you bash the guy? He was not awful, just rusty.
Both teams want this game, Lakers have been struggling a little bit lately. They got beaten up by the Cavs on Christmas, barely beat the Kings, and got smoked by the Suns. We are playing our best ball of the season. I see it being a semi-close game, but LA pulling it out.
Let's hope the Lakers decide to check out of 2009 early
so we can surprise them and get this one. Otherwise, the last 2 wins make up for whatever happens tonight.
any post with a Liks themed photshop gets my approval, content be damned!!
man pau looks super scuzzy, love the jean jacket! I think a win could be in the air.
Biedrins facing competition will get him used to the game faster...
It’s not going to help if he only plays against weak teams.

I live in LA
But I’m a Warrior Fan – LETS GO WARRIORS – 3 Game win streak baby!!
Hit em High!
I remember buying the Space Jam soundtrack, and that song, along with Basketball Jones (by Chris Rock and Barry White) were my favorites. Busta’s verse is raw to this day. That dude’s flow just makes you want to break something.
On a separate note, after acting like total babies on Christmas day, do you think the Laker fans will notice that they’re getting every single call tonight? Or will they just think that’s the way it’s supposed to be?
Don't worry about me Thurgood, I'll be fine. The robbery is what's important now.

this board is so bi-polar...just last week when curry was almost puttin up triple doubles
everybody was on his sack and was getting mad when they put c.j. in the game…. now c.j. watson has one good game and he should all of a sudden start over curry?? and he is a much better player than curry?? GTFO

by Reverend_Randy on Dec 29, 2009 7:09 PM PST up reply actions
cuz he's a scrub...he knows he won't amount to nothin in the league...
therefore people dont respect his jumpshot (leave him open) and don’t look at him as a defensive threat (make careless passes) which would and should lead to him having a good game…alot more is expected from curry so teams focus on him more
by Steph-Fan Curry on Dec 29, 2009 7:12 PM PST up reply actions
Woah guy
Steph isn’t great right now. I’d rather have Steph start than Watson, though. Most real teams stick with one starting line up.
by Reverend_Randy on Dec 29, 2009 7:17 PM PST up reply actions
i understand that..
but it seems like the dubs have a different one every-single-game….they shouldn’t just base the lineups off of who had a better game the night before…thats crazy imo…that would throw off momentum and kill players confidence if they have a bad game then immediately get benched the next….i could fully understand if they had a streak of bad games, maybe 5 or 6, but not just one…thats ridiculous

Guard Anthony Morrow has not stopped hearing about the dagger 3-pointer he passed up Monday. Nellie said he’s been on him "like a raggedy shirt" about him passing up a 3-pointer. After the game, Morrow issued a public apology on Twitter.

No 3rd quarter collapse. A win has the potential to really help our team, we will be known as the team that beat the Celtics and the Lakers on back to back nights. I don’t care if we lose 5 in a row after this. I really want this one. Which sucks because I am not even going to mentally prepare for the inevitable collapse.

Warriors are playing valiantly right now, I don’t care if we collapse. The way the Lakers are playing this fourth quarter, a lot of teams would be out of it right now. Yet we are somehow making cute behind the back layup moves, and I’m loving every second of it.
Yeah, but since when have we been able to say that about this season’s team? I’ll take it for now. :D

6 points (on 3-5 shooting) 6 rebounds 5 blocks 4 assists and a steal in 18 minutes, and only 1 foul, thats pretty damn close to a quadruple double per 36, for a 2nd year guy who isnt given consistent playing time and often sees scrubs and guys who wouldnt make a rotation on most other teams play ahead of him.
Right now he is the 2nd best player on the team. He is the most talented player and has as much potential as any of the best young players in the NBA. He is a future franchise leader. He could be as good as KG one day. But too many people don’t see this, people presume because of the way Nelson treats him that there must be a reason. People presume nelson gives a damn about anything else other than collecting his cheques and padding his wins total to get a record he doesnt deserve.
Do you or anyone else think he cares about the future of this franchise? Or developing the youth on this team and doing whats best for their growth? No. He doesnt care about anyone but himself so he wont put any effort into building this teams future, all he wants is short term gains to get his wins so he can go back to Hawaii and leave a mess for the next coach.
Randolph is the best 4 on this team. There is no excuse for him not getting a minimum of 30 minutes every game, preferably more. Will he cost you an occasional win? Yes, but even this season i think he’d win more games than lose. And if he does lose the occasional game because of a silly mistake, what the hell does it matter? This won’t be a play off team, you shouldnt be playing guys like turiaf ahead of randolph because they’re "safer’. They may not make a youthful mistake and lose you a game but they sure as hell wont put the team on their back and singlehandedly win games for you, which Randolph is capable of.
Theres no excuse not to give him real minutes, at first his critics said it was his foul trouble, well he worked on it and when was the last time he had foul trouble? He’s worked on his game and brings all the talent and ability he has while not fouling out.
The truth is he is a future all star, a future franchise player and a future MVP contender, i can see a season in the future where he averages something like 28 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks a game. If you guys dont think he’s capable of that please trade him for what you think he is worth and watch him become a superstar where hes sent to.

He is averaging 18.3 points per 36 minutes this season, then consider the fact hes played irregular minutes and hasnt had a perfect time of it so far, then add the growth and development his game should get between now and when he hits his prime, and in his prime one would presume he’d get 36-40 minutes a game, so considering all of that, 28ppg in his prime while not a certainty is realistically possible.

Try and keep it adult now…
Randolph was mismatched against Gasol, period. Radman actually played Kobe reasonably on D, Andris was no good so Turiaf had to take centre and Maggs was proving effective along with Morrow…
WHY THEN would you play Randolph to get mauled even further…?? You make claims that you saw him get maulled and yet you dont then understand why he was yanked???
I know you love the ground he walks on, but this was NOT a game to leave Randolph in..he did quite well at times, but he needed to get pulled at key moments as momentum shift can happen very quickly…
There…long enough for you?

The response is long and flawed
Why not AR an Ronny? AR on Odom sounds reasonable yes? Bynum was out during a key time so it was good to put it in ARA then. And when your getting killed in the 3rd obviously that group he had in was not working so why stick with it? You dont pull a young guy just for the sake of pulling him when he is playing well. Especially for Vlad
Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"
YOU FAIL to grasp that the collapse in the 3rd
started with andris ……he was not playing at all well.
But to be honest, it really doesnt matter what anyone says to you, you wont listen as all you want is for him to play non stop… Radman actually had a very nice defensive game tonight…but again you wont recognise this..

thats not true
vlads better ad post D plus he was hitting some jumpers
AR can hit jumpers just as well as he can
the post d doesnt have any use when they just grab the board right after and put it in cause he cant rebound like AR

They are bad but definetly not the worst.
Have you heard the Hornets and Bulls announcer. Just awful. and Tommy Heinsohn is the biggest homer ever.

IMHO I think Ellis lost it for us like he usually does late in the 4th
He always tries to pull his heroic stuff in big games then loses it because he gets too hyped up or something. Clearly he should have been passing it to Morrow ever since he came in because the dude was on fire but right when he touched the ball he already knew he was going to shoot it.
wait,, although i do have to say, Monta and the warriors got to stop going for steals
if t hey don’t get it, it’s a foul, or a shot.
He made some nice plays down the stretch
He found the open cutters but no one really finished
by Richboievans on Dec 29, 2009 10:14 PM PST up reply actions
He didn’t keep us in the game with on fire playing or anything, but he didn’t lose it. Not at all. Lakers executed like defending world champions at home do. Also, our lack of serviceable big men had us putting a rusty free throw shooting Turiaf out there as our only way to stop Gasol (Biedrins 5 fouls, can’t shoot FTs either). The matchup was loaded against us, we put up a great effort, Monta included.

If Randolph plays 38 minutes tonight
He gets a quadruple-double:
(pro-rated)
12 points
12 rebounds
10 blocks
10 assists
Also, pro-rated: 2 steals, 2 turnovers, 4 missed field goals.
He’s probably our most productive big man right now, faults and all. He needs to play more. Yes, even in crunch time.
There will be no extra point!

They would have fed it to Gasol, he would have scored every time. Randolph couldn’t handle him. We needed Turiaf out there.
Because Odom made short work of Randolph as well.....
DID you not see Odom simply snatch the ball out of Randolphs hands like a baby???
They were simply too big for Randolph….jeeeez

AR dominated odom while he was in. Block PARTY! He got one rebound snatched from him and that was because he was not in great position to have leverage to keep it away from him…

I dont see AR getting beat by Odom at all, other then getting the ball snatched away once
I cannot understand your arguement for not having AR out there. AR at the 4 against Odom would have helped us far more than Maggs at the 4 against odom. if you watch the second half, odom owned maggs on the boards…i;d rather have maggs at the 3 guarding kobe and AR at the 4 against odom, and turiaf at the 5 against gasol.

There’s truly no centers in the league today, players rely too much on athleticism instead of fundamentals, bring back the illegal defense not the stupid defensive three seconds, get rid of the zone defenses, and allow defenders to be more physical with offensive players.

We truly are a lower rung team...
LOL. We should change our name to the Golden State Dangerfields! We gets NO respect!!! Why can Kobe get hacked all game long playing other teams and the refs won’t say anything but whenever he plays the Dubs there’s always one or two phantom fouls guaranteed to be called?
espn's top ten plays of the nba for the decade
- B diddy’s dunk on AK47
it was also the top dunk on the list
Was at the game on a fluke...
Had pretty good seats in the corner behind the basket…Warriors played pretty well. They stayed in the game, if Kobe hadn’t hit ALL of his free throws and the Lakers hadn’t hit a couple of dubious 3 pointers it could have been a different outcome.
I went in expecting Kobe and Gasol to run wild as miss matches. Monte did a reasonably good job staying with Kobe when he was guarding him but the height difference left him helpless to defend the j. And at times we had absolutely no answer for Gasol, our interior man D was atrocious. (I’ve rarely sat close enough to really appreciate the play under he basket but as should be expected we were severely over matched by Gasol and Bynum.)
Props to the Lakers fans for not giving me a hard time for rooting hard and loud for the Warriors.
I was at the Lakers game at Roaracle earlier this year.
The Laker fans were obnoxous, and they beat us by 30 some points. It would have been sweet to beat them, but, it was still a good game tonight
See y'all on the Jumbotron
