My fanship - Now on absence
Well, after reading Kawakami's wonderful article on the main page (this one), I now officially put my fanship of the Golden State Warriors franchise on hold. I've been a fan for 10 years now, a.k.a ever since I knew what basketball was. I'm sure many of you here know of my plight, the same year-in year-out blind devotion to a franchise that continues to disappoint.
This is nothing against the players, this is everything to do with the organization, and our horrible owners and management structure. To be a fan of a franchise is to respect what they're doing and feel good about the direction they're taking. To be a fan of the Steelers for example, goes hand-in-hand with being a fan of the Rooneys. Being a fan of the Patriots, most likely goes hand-in-hand with being a fan of Bellichek. I can no longer claim any association to the Warriors, because I am absolutely disgusted with the ones in power here.
So, effective today, and until this team is sold to someone more competent, and they decide to run things in a way that actually makes sense, my Golden State Warriors fanclub membership is hereby revoked, by myself. I will continue to hope they win every game, but I will no longer sacrifice my day-to-day wellship on a team that has no sense of direction, and will only disappoint me. Consider this my break-up from a girlfriend that only wants more, but never gives. I'm tempted to do the same with the Raiders, but not quite yet.
Yours regrettebly,
DubsDominate

Tempted to give up on Raiders?
How can anyone be holding on with the Raiders and lose interest in the Warriors? The Dubs are incredibly more fun to watch play and they have always been a Northern California team. The freaking Raiders went to LA for a while and limped back into town because the money-hungry ownership wanter a better stadium deal.
Using your ownership/front office logic, how could you root for anything involving Al Davis? He has killed the Raiders organization in a way Cohan adn Rowell can never hope to aspire to.

Agree, almost there myself
While I’m not quite as resolute in my own break-up with the Ws, I know and sympathize with every word. I vowed, the moment they signed Maggette, that I would no longer financially support the Ws in any way shape or form until they either got rid of Maggette, or fired themselves (cohan and rowell), and began drafting for need rather than the ‘future’, ie- a skin and bones underdeveloped ‘stud’ that wont come to fruition for another 3+ years.
Being a 49er fan, it seems they’re turning the corner from an organizational standpoint- the same corner the W’s keep running away from.

Really?
TK is doom and gloom… he spills his bias opinion, again, and you decide you’ve had enough. Where were you at the beginning of the season when the team faced the same financial troubles? Hell the shit hit the fan in Aug for the US economy, but you’re just now getting concerned about the waste of money for Maggette?
Also, there are teams that will have cap room both under the soft and hard cap next season. The concern is that there will be less buyers because the teams that would have been willing to spend their MLE’s to put themselves in between the soft cap (which TK estimates to be 59 mil next season) or the hard cap (which is were the luxary tax kicks in).
Who is under TK’s 59 mil estimated soft cap:
Toronto – 45 mil
Philadelphia – 57 mil
New Jeresey – 50 mil
Detriot – 33 mil
Indiana – 57 mi
Atlanta – 40 mil
Charlotte – 56 mil
Memphis – 36 mil
Minnesota – 50 mil
Portland – 50 mil
OKC – 50 mil
LA Clippers – 56 mil
Sacramento – 56 mil (if they make the MillerlSalmons trade)
Even if you through out the teams that could only over Crawford 1 or 2 million a season that still leave you with 9 teams. Plus you can always work sign and trades. Hell that’s how Rashard Lewis got out of Seattle. He opted out, then he was sign by Orlando in a sign and trade.

Well,
to be clear, this is not simply ONLY because of TK’s article, but it certainly drove the nail in the coffin.
I mean, is he making this up?
“-And in 2012-’13 the Warriors are an astounding $41M for four players, plus add in another $4M if they want to keep Randolph for his fifth year.”
I’m pretty sure he isn’t. That’s Ellis, Biedrins, Jackson, and Maggete. I completely agree with TK when he says that “the reality is that they’ve put themselves into this box–some good players, some interesting players, but in no position to improve drastically or to take a title-run any time soon.”
I’m tired of it. I don’t care if the team is exciting to watch. Guys, let’s not forget that we were on a 13 YEAR PLAYOFF DROUGHT. I don’t care if we can field a solid 7th or 8th playoff team now, I want a CHAMPIONSHIP contender. 40 million locked onto those 4 guys for the next 3-4 years? Yeah, that’s not happening anytime soon.
This isn’t about just one player. I could care less about Maggette. Shouldn’t have gotten the money he did, but he’s just one part of it.
As for the Raiders, hell, I hate what Al Davis has been doing as much as the next fan. But I look at the team, and I realize, if we can change the culture of losing, put a proper coach in place, motivate, the team can do it. Russell – McFadden – Crabtree(hopefully), I see a future. Keep Asomugha, shore up the D-line, and we can consider ourself a threat
Al Davis might have made us the laughing stock of the NFL the past 5 years, but you can’t quite place him with what Cohan and Rowell are doing. I’m sorry, but the Raiders were in the Super Bowl in 2003. As much as I despise the losing in Oakland, I’ve seen results from Davis. I can’t say the same about the Warriors.

The Warriors will hoist the NBA ChampionshipTrophy, and it will make all the miserable seasons, terrible contracts, dumb roster moves, coach-chokings, last-second losses, lack of All-Stars, and every other negative associated with Warriors wash away and make victory taste that much sweeter. Just think for couple of minutes...
Is the economy going to stay bad for the next 4 years? If not, then the cap will go back up. If the Warriors only have 41 million committed to 5 guys in 2012-13 season and the if the soft cap is back up around 60 mil then the Warriors will have 20 million to fill out the roster. Further more, 20 mil of the 41 mil in 2012-13 will be expiring contracts and as you know those contract will be gold for the Warriors. The real problem is in between now and 2012-13. That said, with draft pick and D-leaguers the Warrirors will do just fine in filling out the roster. Will they win a championship, doubt it, but will they be a playoff team I definitely think so.

Seriously?
Just like we won’t recover from the 70’s oil crisis. That 80’s savings and loans scandals would ruin America for ever. That NAFTA would kill the American working class (ok.. maybe that one’s true). That the dot come boom would never be replicated.
That said, perhaps NBA is still in trouble. In my opinion the NBA is a luxury sport. In that ticket prices rank amongst the highest in sports and that they also play a significant amount of games. It’s entirely possible that the economics of NBA will have to make a major shift to wade through our current recession. If that’s the case, then we might see a continued down turn in TV contract and other forms of revenue for the NBA thus a continue drop in salary cap. I tend to doubt that this will be the case, but as you stated:
It might

Well
Part of their issue is demographic: low population growth, an aging work force, and — unlike us — no oppressed underclass of unskilled laborers to prop them up.
Thing is, “in the tank” for them still means absurdly low unemployment, close to zero poverty or homelessness, cheap, excellent healthcare for everyone, and an infrastructure (trains, airports, electric and telecom grids) that makes us look like a third-world country.
Low growth doesn’t have to be such a horrible thing when people buy into the basic concept that everyone should pitch in a little for the greater common good. Meanwhile, we reap the bitter harvest of our Reagan/Bush culture of selfishness, fiscal irresponsibility, and greed. Man, Obama’s got his work cut out for him…

It's not necessarily aout the economy or the salary cap...
it’s that a 19-36 team has 40 million ALREADY locked up 3-4 years down the road. If we had any chance of actually being a title competitor, sure, I’d love it, because it’d mean our core was established.
Does it make me happy that THIS team’s core is locked up for 3-4 years down the road? Not too much.

40 million ALREADY locked up 3-4 years
Hold up.
That’ll be the tail end of Jax and Maggette’s contracts, as well as Biedrins & Ellis. Trade possibilities will be there.
Also, look around the league. How many players do most teams have on their roster that make a combined $20M? 6? 7? What’s 5+7? 12, so we’ll need to get 3 guys at vet minimum or the MLE. The world is not coming to an end. Get over it. We’ll have a few guys on their rookie contracts and a few vet minimums. Look at the current roster: Ronny Turiaf comes in at 4M this year, Azubuike comes in at 3M. We’ve got 4 guys on rookie contracts (Wright, Randolph, Belinelli, and Marcus Williams), and the rest are rookie call ups or vets.

Gotta say it’s the dysfunctional part- that’s the crux of the issue. I can take bad, I can take awful- ‘cause that’s what we’ve been since 1994 (save for 2007).
For this season inparticular, I would have rather been bad than dysfunctional. Because by the signing of Maggs to a long term deal- we completely hamstrung our ability to actually fill needs. W/ out Maggs,we’d undoubtedly be worse now than we are today- But where are we going at this rate?
Is it too much to ask that the franchise care about Wins first, and the bottom line second?

That's what you think...
I’ve heard more than a few people say the same thing.
“I’m not a Warriors fan anymore because of blah-blah-blah.”
The reason doesn’t matter. Not at all. Because as soon as there’s a Warriors game in front of your face coz you’re at a friend’s house and it’s on TV, or you’re at a sports bar or restaurant or whatever, you’ll cheer when they’re winning and curse them when they’re losing. Now that you’re “not a fan anymore” you’ll still curse them when they’re losing and cheer them when they’re winning.
You can’t denounce your fanship to whoever will listen and then expect to just turn it off cold. It’s already inside you. You just want more wins and more positive moves from the front guys. Hey we all do. But you can’t just flip off that switch. Trust me. You’re still a fan… a disgruntled fan… but still a fan. You can’t run from it.

45% of the attendance was somehow chanting MVP for Kobe last night which was worse than the officiating or even the outcome. After all when someone decides they are going to hang up their yellow t-shirts and thunderstix for some other team what other bandwagon is easier to jump on then the Lakers. I think we’re all pretty much tired of the negligence of the ownership to its fanbase. But at this point, I’ll appreciate the greatness of superstars like Lebron and Wade and others that come to visit, but I can’t and won’t pick any other team I’d want to be disappointed in then these guys..

The MVP chants didn’t pick up until the Warriors fans started leaving with 2 minutes to got int he game. I was in Section 106, which was filled with Lakers fans and for the most part the MVP chants were dead the whole game until the Lakers went up by 6 points in the 4th quarter. Also, the Lakers fans always dominate in Oakland and in Sacramento… because alot of the people jumped on there bang wagon while the Kings and Warriors were sucking it up in the (kings in the 80s and early 90s and the Warriors as you know had 15 years of suck).

Yeah I was in the same section
I friggin hate front running faker fans, man I wanted to just punch the guy behind me in the mouth like the whole game. I hate their hollier than thou attitude, it takes a lot of guts to root for the dominate team in the league and chant MVP for one of the best players in the league. If you like LA so damn much go back to your dessert hovel jackazzes.
But let’s be honest if this new line of signings and extensions is going to piss you off enough to not be a fan any longer, why didn’t you just hang it up like 15 years ago or 5 years ago when getting rid of Webber was happening and let’s keep Sprewell and trade my favorite player of all time Tim Hardaway happens while Sprewell chokes the coach the next year and then get’s trade for a bag of shite. Or how about Erik Dampier being signed for like 11 million a season and let’s not forget Adonal Foyle who we were still paying for this year. Mike Dunleavy that’s all i have to say Mike Dunleavy ewwwwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeee. If that didn’t make you quit as a fan how do these singings.
I have to be honest I’ve watched this team for 20 plus years now and this last season has been one of the worse years I can remeber but I feel I’m older now and pay much more attention to the cap and the ability to for manuevering more than I ever have. It doesn’t help when you extend and I know I’m going to get crap for this but one of the gumpiest/trolliest players I’ve ever seen and I’ve watched and played a lot of basketball, in Stephen Jackson was extended when he still had 2 years left on his contract for an additional 3 years. The first thing I remeber thinking was man I got to watch this guy until I’m 35 ewwwwwwwwweeeeeeee, this sucks, I’m pissed off. Then to top it off we trade Al Harrington a big man for another guard that doesn’t play a lick of D and doesn’t rebound in Craword and he’s got a 4 more years on his contract at 9 million and up per season ouch. I guess it could have been the straw that broke the camels back but what can I say I’m a FIEND.
It's all about the killer cross-over baby!

It is crazy how this team is run. It shows the front office knows nothing about constructing a team. It all started when Mullin was pushed aside for bean counter Rowell. We have a talented group of players, but none that will take us above mediocrity, and definitely not the right mix. I think the Warriors are Rowell’s fantasy team. We don’t need a fantasy manager, but a guy that can evaluate talent and chemistry beyond the numbers.

22 players...
Was this a summary of the roster for the whole season or did we have 7 guys constantly on the old injured reserve list?

Well...
Blount, Brown, Coker, Garner, Garces, Livingston, Keefe, McPherson (who was sick when he got signed to the end of the season that year) and Mullin weren’t there for the full year…. just faded in and out of the team.
That was also the year when Blaylock hung up the sneakers to play golf instead of practice if I’m not mistaken….

Yeah... He missed practice to play golf
and he was suspended for 1 game (against the Jazz). Mookie was the BEST EVER!!

man that's exactly it
I WAS a fan during this time….watched every frickin’ game on that crappy Action 36 Cable 6 TV station day in and day out…honestly, my clearest memories of those times, besides Twan’s back-to-back 51 is tuning in to a Spurs-Warriors game and watching us get blown out by 30….
I was a fan during those times….so I’m clearly not a fair-weather fan…..I just need a break to clear my mind….of course I’ll still watch their games when they’re on TV…I’ll still root for them to win….but I’m just not going to vest my emotions into them and get my heart-broken like it always does…

Dude
You have alot emotionaly invested apparently.
Its a sports team, you are supposed to watch sports to relax and have fun. Come on now…
If you can’t hang with almost-there teams, I suggest you start watching Arena Football. The Sabrecats pwn it up!!!

I pray i never have to use a gun again...
...unless i'm at a strip club parking lot...
...and somebody tries to run me over with their car...
...But how often does that happen??

Yeah, that's squad right there. Ask 'Sheed how he feels about Chris Mills!
On the real, this points out how we are AND HAVE BEEN years- DYSFUNCTIONAL, and awful.

Except for listening to Jamison’s 50 point games on the radio, I have completed blocked those memories out. Post Traumatic Warriors Season Disorder
