Don't trade Randolph!
Let me start off by saying that I am not just posting this because of what I saw from Anthony Randolph last night against the Lakers. I didn't really know much about Randolph before the Warriors drafted him and I'm sure, like me, a lot of people reacted in the same fashion when the Warriors took him with the 14th overall pick in last years draft. Personally, I wondered why we would need another tall, skinny, left handed basketball player when we just got Brandan Wright a season before. So I began to research Randolph a little bit and I have to say I was impressed. I YouTubed his name and found some of his highlights from LSU and a video showcasing his handling and leaping ability. Then I kept hearing his name pop up in the summer league (all good things) and the buzz about this kid started to catch my ear a little bit. I started to get excited about the newest Warrior hype. He was described as a tall, athletic forward who can handle the ball very well and has the ability to finish (although last night he missed 3 layups in a row). He was similar to Brandan Wright in the sense that they both were tall and left handed but Randolph is a much different player.
In November, I put up a post which posed the question : Who would you rather keep : Wright or Randolph? and the majority chose Randolph. I think this is because Randolph really does have star qualities in him. It's not often you get a guy who can play point/center or point/forward. He is developing some kind of a mid range shot and if he perfects it while adding a post up game, he will truly have an all around ability. He rebounds and blocks well and on top of that, I can really see the drive and passion that this kid plays with. Oops, I forgot to mention : He's only 19!! Which means, with the right coaching, that he will only get better. Though there are times that he looks completely erratic out there, I at least like the determination and willingness to learn. I know he so desperately wants to play and he has shown his attitude but I like how he has progressed and stayed positive. He knows he has to keep working hard and improving and eventually he will get his turn.
Anyways, last nights performance by Anthony Randolph was a perfect example of why we should not trade this kid. He's going to get older, wiser and overall better! He frustrated one of the leagues hottest players, as of late, in Lamar Odom and he seemed like he was everywhere on the court. For the most part, he was doing all the right things and If we would have won, he would have definitely been the X-factor in the game. We all should know that there are going to be ups and downs with this kid, but if it were up to me, I would not give up on him because if we do, he's going to be a star somewhere else. Even though Warrior fans are all too familiar with situations like this, it would be an absolute shame to see another star that we had the rights to, end up getting traded. I don't want to see it happen again. Don't trade Anthony Randolph!

Bwright
The problem is bwright has been out for a while and we have forgotten that he too was playing well before his injury.
But I have to admit, I rather keep AR – as long as he and nellie get along and he doesn’t demand a trade or something.
by mosdl on Feb 19, 2009 11:18 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
that's another thing im worried about
He might demand a trade later on. I hope he doesnt and i hope we can keep him. I never forgot about Wright. I love Wright’s game and what he brings to the table. that’s another subject though. I just really don’t want to trade Randolph. He is going to be something special inthis league eventually. Mark my words! I can’t wait to get this team fully healthy though. Even with Monta back, we still haven’t seen this team at full strength yet. It sucks!

I am dying to know what he is like behind the scenes
When Odom pushed him off his back he looked like he wanted to cry. I know he looks like that al the time, but I cannot get a handle on his emotional response during games.
Is he under control or out of contrl emotionally?
by warriorsvictim on Feb 19, 2009 11:21 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
When he missed those three layup attempts on the same possession
he looked pissed. But rather than bitch about any contact, he ran back and worked the boards.
But he still has to work on control – he is better at it than earlier. Whatever nellie is telling him is working.

He has some fire............
let’s face it…AR is a yonger version of Odom. I dont think Odom had a clue how to deal with this excited young pup that kept jumping at him constantly, his level of hustle is the same as Marco’s.
AR made at least 3 plays last night where he sprinted the entire length of the court from offense to defense to be the first to get a challenge in…….THAT Ladies and Gents, is something we have lacked for a longgggggggggggg time.
When AR got bumped…..he was not “crying” upset….he was “Pissed” upset….I like that! I want to see players start getting in other players faces and letting them know they cannot do stuff.
When Kobe did that 360 dunk….. The very next play he got near the basket, he should have been flattened!
I like this kids spirit and I really do not want us to lose him…

He often looks like he wants to cry
but last night I literally thought he was going to. I think I could see tears welling up.
This kid has emotion and talent. The drive, no, the NEED to get better. GO AR GO!

If any GM sees “future hall of famer” like Odom did last night, sure, they can have him.
But I do like Randolph, very much, all the way from not caring for him at all. I can at least see where all the "GOAT"ers are coming from.

I wouldn't want to trade Anthony Randolph...
When the W’s drafted him last season, I got kinda excited just because I’ve been all over his bio and ish and had him projected to to in the middle of the lottery (8-11). When he dropped to #14, I figured that he would be picked up by the W’s despite having a similar (yet different) player in Brandan Wright. The first thing I did was take a mini vacation from work and fly to Vegas to watch the summer leagues (and look for freaks up in the clubs). He was pretty impressive at the summer league games, periodically bringing up the ball and creating for himself. Even his jumper looked smooth there. Unfortunately, when the season came along, he would have brain farts, such as Pietrusesque turnovers and bad shot selection.
I understand why Nellie was a harsh on him (although I would have liked to see him a lot more than Kurz). Randolph needs to be able to break his bad habits in order to become a good to great player in the NBA. Randolph definately has star qualities, but he’s also young, and needs to develop and have the patients to be developed by the coaching staff. Just like it took 3 years to develop Beans into the double double machine he is now, it will probably take as long to develop Wright & Randolph into the players they have the skill set to be.
Now… a starting line up of Monta, Jackson, Randolph, Wright & Biedrins sounds like the future… with Maggs, Belinelli & Turiaf off the bench.

I have to agree with you there. We have the pieces to be a very very very good team in the future!

Rec.
I love that lineup. A couple minor edits:
1. Replace Beli with Buki
2. Give Ty Lawson (our #9 pick) 20-25 mpg at backup PG. Imagine a super-efficient, unselfish, lightning fast open-court playmaker setting up Monta, Buki, and the three skinny lefties? Wow.
Pencil in 45-50 wins next season!

you think
Randolph’s future is at the 3? I can’t decide whether I think he needs to add strength or develop an outside shot. Obviously both to some degree, but right now I think his future is probably as a 4……but I also think Monta’s future is as a 2 so maybe I’ve just grown accustomed to small lineups.

Well with Randolph's apparent fascination with handling and pushing the ball...
I’d want them to experiment with him at the three. He’s in the mold of a KG-Odom type of player: good enough to hold down the small forward spot but big enough to be the power forward. I just like Wright’s knack for getting to loose balls very quick and unorthodox method of getting the ball in the basket (ala Antawn Jamison)… so he’s a starter in my books.
As for Monta at the 2… that’s why you need a ball-dominant player such as a Stephen Jackson (or even a Baron Davis) to play with Monta and set him up. He’s only big enough to guard the point on the opposing team, but offensively, he needs the freedom of running without the ball basically every other posession to be effective. That’s why Jackson is an important cog (and heavily underrated around the league). I’d be happy with that.

We all should know that there are going to be ups and downs with this kid, but if it were up to me, I would not give up on him because if we do, he’s going to be a star somewhere else.

A few problems with that projected starting line up...
1. Monta isn’t a very good point guard and i’m guessing he never will be.
2. By the time Randolph and Wright are really good Jax will be too old and Turiaf will probably be gone.
3. Nellie will probably be gone as well.

keep Randoph
and trade “the bust” Wright. Unless he put on some weights, he isn’t going to be a very good player. The ways espn hypes up AR, I know we have a very special player here. If he could develop right, he could plays sf and pf and maybe C depends if he hits the weight room. But I could see him put up 19 or 20/ 10/ 6-7 in 2-3 yrs.

The way espn hypes up AR,
we can get alot back for him in a trade. I really think we have TOO MUCH depth. I would love a Crawford + Marco + a take your pick of Wright or Randolph for one solid player in the off season.
We will probably need to be patient and let this season play out.

+1
I wouldnt be opposed to our pick(assuming its in the 8-12 range)+Wright/Randolph+Marco for the #1 pick either.
Crawford/CJ
Monta/Buike
Jackson/Maggette
Griffin/Randolph(or Wright)
Biedrins/Turiaf

Now we are talking,
if we got the 13th pick though, maybe we can spin those 2 for Thabeet and use the MLE on JKidd, and Crawford opting out would make my summer.
Kidd/CJ
Monta/Azibuike/Morrow
Jackson/Maggette
Randolph or Wright/Turiaf
Biedrins/Thabeet
We will probably need to be patient and let this season play out.

thabeet is way overrated
in the nba he’s going to be going against super physical players every night….
he finally faced one in college last week, and the pittsburg center or pf, demolished him
and on top of that he has no offensive ability whatsoever. he’ll be a bust, he’s eerily similar to patrick o’bryant, with slightly better defense, and slightly worse offense

Fair enough,
I did see the Pitt-UConn game and he didnt look to good. I enjoy college basketball, but will admit thats its a passing intrest compared to my addiction ito the NBA. I was just saying that trading from 13 to 1 for the only sure fire prospect is hard.
Who is the second and third best big coming out of the draft?
Anybody decent big have a chance to slip a bit in the draft ala Brook Lopez?
We will probably need to be patient and let this season play out.

Wright a bust?
Give me a break. Yeah, let’s give up on him after a season and a half (1 in which he didn’t even really play). I think you’re going to have to eat those words in a couple of years. Just like all the Beli haters, and where are they now?

Whats your defintion of solid?
Im pleased with his performance and I think he can be an 8th man type of combo guard and change of place player, he has not really showed me anything more than that.
Has he shown you anything so far that he can be an adequate starter in the leauge?

He proved he can play a few minutes and hurt himself, but how many NBA players can do that?
Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?

i think WORST CASE
randolph turns into a supersub energy guy who rebounds and scores a little…..
thats worst case if he never learns how to hit a jumper and his handling/passing stay same. He is only 19 so odds he wont improve are slim. Right now its the decision between not signing anyone and letting him have his growing pains for a couple seasons at 4…. OR signing some1, using him as sub/energy guy, learn from the new 4 and then hopefully win out starting spot

I agree, we should keep AR
But I think he’s best as a fast power forward. Both AR and Turiaf showed me in the last couple games that power forward is no longer our number 1 need. AR is a legitimate rebounder and defensive intimidator.
At the 5 we should rotate:
Biedrins and Turiaf
AT the 4 we should rotate:
AR and Wright
At the 3 we should rotate:
Jackson and Magette
At the 2 we have
Buike, Belineli, Monta, CJ, Morrow, Crawford (6 players!)
At the 1 we have…
No legitimate 1, we are still using Jackson as the primary playmaker, we’d be way better off if he was 2nd or 3rd option. But you have to give him props for being a major overachiever.
I propose we unload 3 of these guys and get (through draft, trade, or off season signing)
1. an athletic, quick, driving, distributing, pass first point guard
2. another burly rebounding, defensive 4/5
The next 30 games the six 2’s can prove if one of them can be the legitimate point guards, and if they deserve to stay. Also we should have either wright or AR out there all the time, so they can both be developing, and prove that they belong in our future.

yeah, we need a point guard in a bad way. There was word earlier in the season of a Felton for Wright trade, which I said yes to. Of course, I was in the vast minority. Lawson may be a Felton type, but he’d need to continue to develop like Felton has. Lawson is quick as hell and can push, which is fine if we’re running the way we want to, but can be out of control and isn’t a great shooter. Felton is a f/a this offseason and you have to wonder what the Bobcats are going to do with him. If they re-sign him, they’ve got him and DJ. If they give him a qualifying offer, he’s unrestricted the next year, although it seems like the best option for them at this point. If they let him walk, they didn’t get any value for him, can’t see this happening. OR they could trade Augustin, who I wouldn’t mind having. If they got rid of DJ, it would be for a good player and I’m sure they’d want to package Nazr’s salary with him. They need bigs…..
by jmaaan on Feb 23, 2009 5:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I suspect they’ll give him a qualifying offer, since keeping Felton for another year wouldn’t immediately seem to limit Charlotte’s choices for the coming season. Erasing his salary at the QO doesn’t push them into shopper space in the FA market and it doesn’t push them up over the cap either. He’ll then be on a one-year deal. It makes it tough to trade him as he gets to veto trades after this, but he could still be included in a deal if he’s agreeable.
by jae on Feb 23, 2009 5:46 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
i believe the trade.....
they wanted randolph not wright….I dont see bwright as a larry brown player (not that randolph is, but hes more of a raw talent)
felton could walk though if he feels disrepected by charlotte w/ augustin. He can sign elsewhere if charlotte doesnt match the offer….i wouldnt mind him here, especially if crawford opts out. BUT I wouldnt pay an arm and a leg

meh
I dont mind Felton but he doesnt really seem like the answer. Seems like we’d have to pay/trade more than he’s worth.

I feel like Felton...
is a good to very good point guard that could definitely be useful to this team on the defensive end because he’s a big body point guard that can move laterally pretty well and also on the offensive end because he can push the ball with control and set up players. His jump shot isn’t extremely consistent but if he gets enough space, he can knock down the open shot, which will be very valuable to us. Tafkasam and Sam23, you guys are both right, I wouldn’t pay an arm and a leg for him and we almost definitely will have to pay him a grip and I just don’t think he’s worth another big contract. I don’t remember the whole package deal that we had set up to try to acquire Felton but I don’t remember liking it. I think it was something involving Wright and/ or Randolph and I automatically shook my head and said no. I think Wright and Randolph are going to be huge pieces in our future. That’s one of the reasons why I put up this post. Both of them are very intriguing players that can do different but positive things on the court and I think these are two types of players that you want wearing a Warriors jersey when they’re fully developed.
