not robbed

sean penn in milk did a damn good job for more reasons than one, give him props for that one.

Sean Penn was fine

but if the award was truly going to best acting performance you cant NOT give it to Mickey. Sean Penn won because he was playing a homosexual civil rights hero not because of his performance. Mickey killed that role, nobody else couldve played it nearly as well as he did. Actually I’m not sure anyone else couldve played that role at all. Several people couldve played Harvey Milk and done as good a job as Sean Penn did.

I'll give mad props to Rourke

but Rourke was already a washed up actor and boxer in real life. Is it really that much of a stretch for him to act like a washed up wrestler? Think about it.

And as far as saying that “several people” would have done as good a job as Penn did playing Milk… how many people can really out-act Sean Penn in any role? He’s pretty much as good as it gets IMO.

Penn has never been better than he was as Spicoli. But seriously, how hard is it to capture an audience when youre playing a homosexual civil rights hero compared to playing a washed up wrestler? Several people couldve nailed the Milk role and been nominated for the award…..nobody couldve come close to Mickey with that Wrestler role, the whole movie would be totally irrelevant without him. Yea the role mirrors his own life in a lot of ways but I think the wrestler/boxer thing is totally irrelevant and the character story arc being so similar to Mickey’s own life only enhances the entertainment value.

u missed the point

It’s not the wrestler/boxer comparison i was making, but the boxer/actor comparison to a wrestler who is basically an athlete/actor as well. Rourke has played macho men all his life. Having to tap into the emotions of a downward spiraling macho man basically only needed for him to imagine a character that he could make up in his head and craft partially from his own persona. If playing a homosexual civil rights hero who was not only a character but a REAL person that actually existed and died a mere 30 years ago is an easier role in your opinion, then i’ll have to leave you to your opinion. But playing real people has long been considered immensely more difficult than playing a made-up character. The public is less forgiving if you take too much creative license in the portrayal.

You remembered that she won the award 2 years ago and the role she won it for? But no biggie. This is a basketball blog. I prefer awards that you win through sporting and not thru voting anyway.

No way man...

Slumdog was a phenomenal, original, and breathtaking piece of artwork…anyone who says it was overrated should become a Kings fan, or better yet, a Clippers fan. Danny Boyle finally got the recognition he deserved for such brilliant work.

yea, I mean it was a good movie and all but the Wrestler was a lot better. Slumdog is like the NBA player who is talked about as being underrated for so long that he becomes overrated. Slumdog=Paul Millsap.

yea, yea

I’m not saying Slumdog was bad….it was a good movie. Paul Millsap is a good player. But the hype around them stemming from their previous underratedness is getting a little ridiculous. If it had been up to me I probably wouldve nomintated The Wrestler, Dark Knight, Gran Torino, Slumdog, and one of Benjamin Button, Milk or Doubt. (didnt see the Reader)

Sorry... :-(

Took a few extra jobs and just trying 2 survive this nasty economy. I worked at Blockbuster Video for a hot second… it was fun lol, I think I rented and burned more movies while I was there than I actually worked! I’ll have something posted soon- just wanna get some priorities out of the way.

Slumdog is the Chris Paul of movies. You can make cases for other movies, but after you watch Slumdog in person, you understand that you were taking its greatness for granted.

by belilaugh on Feb 23, 2009 3:11 PM PST up reply actions

No...

I strongly disagree. Slumdog Millionaire is more like Al Harrington. It has delusions of greatness and when you see it in person you realize that it’s predictable, patronizing, and overly sentimental. Full of cheese. It isn’t nearly as great as people have made it out to be.

nowhere near MVP-status… role player possibly? ^^

by weirdfishy on Feb 23, 2009 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

Hmm...

Forrest Gump
Braveheart
The English Patient
Titanic
Shakespeare in Love
American Beauty
Gladiator
A Beautiful Mind
Chicago
Lord of the Rings
Million Dollar Baby
Crash
The Departed
No Country for Old Men

That’s the last 14 so-called “Best Pictures” before Slumdog. Obviously Slumdog‘s not a flawless work of art like Taxi Driver or The Godfather. It gets a bit cheesy in the last third. It’s probably not as great as City of God, the movie it most resembles. But it’s got miles more heart, passion, and style than most of the crap on that list. The only movies on that list I’d consider putting above it are Lord of the Rings and No Country for Old Men.

To me, if any pic this year was overrated, it was that overlong, overwrought piece of eye-candy, Benjamin Button — more a triumph of CG than anything else. Much like the similarly overrated Gump, it tried to pass off pure banal nonsense (“some people sell buttons”, e.g.) as insightful and deep. There was more depth and life and energy in a twenty-second clip from Slumdog than in the entire three hours of Button.

IMO, of course. As they say, de gustibus non est disputandum…

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Feb 23, 2009 5:09 PM PST up reply actions

dude!

Braveheart?! Forrest Gump?! Gladiator?! The Departed?! You’d put those below Slumdog? NO WAY! The rest of ‘em maybe, but the Oscars’ horrible track record doesnt excuse giving the award to another unjustified flick. I agree Button was also a bit overrated, but its not like EVERYONE you talk to is waiting to tell you how awesome the movie is and how cool they are for having seen it.

Benjamin Button

Was a good movie, i suggest you watch it with a couple other people, i watched with a friend and her cousins and there’s parts where you need to laugh with a couple people and not just by yourself. You’d probably get bored if you watch it by yourself since the storyline is more interesting than it is exciting.

YES!!!!

the acting, other than Clint, wasnt that impressive, but that movie was awesome. Gran Torino, The Wrestler, and Dark Knight=top 3 movies of the year. Milk was good, but outside of the story it certainly wasnt extraordinary. Slumdog was a nice little flick but by the time I saw it it had been so hyped up that it didnt even come close to living up to expectation.

JAI HO!

Even as an Indian person I have to admit that Slumdog wasn’t that great. It was basically Pursuit of Happyness set in India. But you can’t deny that the subtext of the movie is absolutely heartwarming. It’s almost scary the way that the theme of the movie somehow managed to manifest itself in real life. The two child actors from the slums had probably never even been in a car in their lives and next thing they know their on a plane to LA staying in a five star hotel. The fact that a movie that was about to go straight to video with a budget of 15 mil can receive such unanimous recognition is definitely inspiring especially to Indians and specifically the city of Mumbai after the terror attacks. Last night was probably the best time I had watching TV since the Dallas series. And of course congrats to Danny Boyle not so much for his directing but for somehow finding Freida Pinto, hands down hottest girl in the world, out of India’s 1 billion people and allowing us to feast our eyes on her while Dev Patel was making a fool of himself with his complete failure of an Indian accent. (OK his accent wasn’t that bad maybe I’m just jealous)
