Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

My Fellow Warrior Fans who also like Kevin Durant & Hate the Lakers

When it comes to my NBA fanhood, the 3 things about me in a particular order is that I love the Warriors, I'm a huge Kevin Durant fan, and I loathe the Lakers. Prior to tipoff last Saturday night, myself and some of you fellow GSOMers were giving praise to Kevin Durant. I mean... he's just an awesome player, who is only 20, and it's good for the league that he's in here doing what he's doing. This kid is already hella good, plus he can only get better. He would be a Junior in college right now had he elected to stay at Texas University.

I'm glad our Warriors came up with the win, but if you watched the game, I'm sure you saw his monsterous dunk on Randolph. I mean Jeff Green and Russell Westbrook are going to be great players too, but in actuality, almost all eyes are on Durant. Maybe he didn't have good games his first 2 career games against us, but since the last game of las season (His 1st NBA double-double), he has always been on a tear against us.He finished up with 32 points last Saturday, 2 of them being crunch time baskets to almost  make them come back. But... Stephen Jackson then started primarily guarding him and almost like anyone else who would be guarded by Jackson, the game wasn't so easy anymore.

Now the Thunder and Lakers play tomorrow. On paper, the Thunder don't stand a chance. However, we were in contention with the Nuggets for the 8th and final playoff seed last year. We had to rely on Durant and the Sonics to beat the Nuggets to help keep our playoff chances alive. Durant hit 2 3s to keep them alive, and then won eventually in double ot. Like I said earlier, he's 20 now. At 19 last year, he had a whole lot of clutch/gw shots. I mean Kobe's arguably the greatest player right now, but at 19 and/or 20, he was nowhere near Durant's level of play.

So, here's to the Thunder hoping to pull off a miracle upset tomorrow. They have the talent with the centerpiece to do it. Don't buy into the Thunder's record. They are a tough 13-win team. Their record doesn't show it, but they are a real competitive team. In closing, I would like to join the good people of Oklahoma City in a chant of "BEAT LA. BEAT LA. BEAT LA."

And may a Durant on Kobe dunk tomorrow be even more emphatic then it was on Randolph!

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

yep...sounds about right

thats the beauty of being a Laker fan. You dont have to know anything else about any other team, because you already know you’re going to the finals against either the celtics or the cavs…im guessing celtics. Hell, you didnt even have to be a fan of the NBA until last year, then you just jump on the bandwagon. You also get to make you’re arguement that you have the MVP on your team….not because he is this year but because, as a laker fan, you have some sense of entitlement to make such a delusional arguement since you know your team is going to the finals.

The thunder are going to be a very, very good team, really soon. I was a little disappointed that they let Chandler go, I thought with a solid big man who plays D that they would become a real force. Even without him, they have a solid young core. Durant is simply an offensive beast already, the guy is going to be really good. Its already starting to shape into the Bowie/Jordan draft of the 80’s…poor portland.

I really want to be a fan of the Thunder, but am having a hard time getting past the fact that Seattle got screwed so bad. I guess it wouldnt be too different than being a Warrior fan…young, talented potential that you’re waiting to develop and cheer for every step along the way, but with an upper management that has no business in dealing with a sports franchise

Brandon's numbers this year are very very similar to last year

We were the 25th best rebounding team in the NBA last year. With Oden this year we are the 2nd best.

Argue all you like

but you cant tell me that Oden is the difference maker for your team record. Not with a more experienced Roy, Aldridge, Outlaw and newly aquired Fernandez, Batum and Bayless. Oden has shown signs of life and the reason Portland took him #1, but when it comes down to it, Durant has proven to be an allstar caliber G/F while Oden has shown to be a potentially talented big man with a growing reputation of being fragile. Portalnd has a good record due to their talented, young core, not because Oden has played most of the season and had a few games of double digit boards

by rtgunn on Feb 26, 2009 11:22 PM PST up reply actions

Outlaw is actually playing worse this year, and his numbers are down.

Oden is the talented young core. Oden, Roy, Aldridge. Greg has played 46 games this year and our record with him is better than our record without him. Durant is vastly out playing Greg in their careers, but the comparison is unfair (however unsurprising it is).

Greg Oden shot attempts rookie year: 5.7
Kevin Durant shot attempts rookie year: 17.1

Greg Oden minutes per game rookie year: 22.8
Kevin Durant minutes per game rookie year: 34.6

Kevin Durant averages more shots in his rookie year than Greg Oden’s career high.

It’s sorta like Kobe-Shaq, Can’t go wrong either way but most people would take the bigger guy cause there’s fewer of them.

by Skeptic con Urquell on Feb 27, 2009 10:09 AM PST up reply actions

You could go wrong with Sam Bowie, either

… except for, you know, the little thing about the glass jaw…

At the time of the draft, Bill Simmons was terrified for Oden when he saw him in person — said one leg looked much longer than the other and that he walked like Fred Sanford. Stark contrast to Durant, who he noted “just moved like an athlete.” Even when Durant kinda sucked, last season, he never had any issues with stamina or durability. Indeed, the fact he goes 35-40 minutes a night without getting winded may be one his most underrated qualities.

Ii’s not like there weren’t some big red flags for Oden. I like his game, but I’d be pretty surprised if he manages to put together 3-4-5 consecutive seasons without significant time on the DL.

If Portland could flip Oden for Durant right now, don’t you think they would? And don’t you think OKC wouldn’t?

If Portland could flip Oden for Durant right now, don’t you think they would? And don’t you think OKC wouldn’t?

I don’t think portland would want to lose a good big to pick up another scorer since they already have Roy, their team wouldn’t gain as much as the Sonics would lose if they made the trade. They both ended up in the spots where they are most useful.

Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?

I disagree strongly

You dont think Portland would rather have przybilla at center and durant at sf than oden at center and outlaw/fernandez/webster/batum? sure theyd lose some critical depth at the big spots, but having roy/durant on the wing would be devastating. I think I wouldve made the same choice had I been in Portland’s shoes, but I think Blazer fans who say theyre still 100% satisfied with the pick are kidding themselves.

If they din’t have Roy they’d jump at the chance to get durant but roy and durant would be too much of a good thing, sorta like crawford and ellis.Teams need to be balanced. Oden with durant or Oden with Roy makes more sense than Roy and Durant.

except

Roy is a better creator than either Kobe or Iverson and doesnt need to dominate the ball in the same way. I dont see how Roy AND Durant would be a bad thing. Both guys are also capable of playing a couple positions.

Thing A

by sam23 on Mar 1, 2009 12:29 PM PST up reply actions

Both are also lacking in the defensive department

Durant a lot more than Roy though. That’s why the Blazers start 20 year old rookie Nic Batum. They have Travis Outlaw (who is 3 times the scorer Batum is) but Nic starts because he is a much better defender. The Blazers have no problem scoring, they have problems stopping people. Greg is/was the right pick for the Blazers.

Oden...

Is nothing to scoff at but don’t tell me you wouldn’t like to watch this line-up play.

PG: Blake
SG: Roy
SF: Durant
PF: Aldridge
C: Przybilla

Considering the fact that Przybilla’s production has been on par with Oden’s so far I’d rather have the upgrade at SF. That would be a really fun team to watch (not that they aren’t now…)

Thing 2

by olympicmike on Feb 24, 2009 4:10 PM PST up reply actions

Przybilla is 29

He does not fit our championship window. Portland will not be in the lottery for quite some time. When Joel is done what would we do for a center? Try and get lucky with a 20 pick? Durant is the player he is now because he gets to shoot the ball 17 times a game. If Portland drafted him he would get less shots than Roy and Aldridge. It’s late so I’m not gonna continue on. Yes, drafting Durant may have helped Portland right away, but Portland’s problem is not offense, it’s defense. Off the top of my head we are 2nd in offensive efficiency. KD is a horrible defender.

If Portland drafted him he would get less shots than Roy and Aldridge

I just dont think either of those are true. He’d be getting fewer shots, but I dont think you’d be denying one of the game’s top 5 offensive talents opportunities to get Aldridge his looks. I mean Roy and L.A. are very very good young players, obviously, but offensively they dont come close to Durant. There are only a handful of teams where Durant could go and the offense wouldnt be run through him……you guys arent one of em. And it in some ways it helps Durant that he he’s had a green light to shoot as much as he wants the last couple years, but I wouldnt say its why he’s the player he is now. He’s the player he is now because he’s incredibly talented. I think Oden was the right pick at the time, but if you got to do it over again right now I have a hard time seeing you guys pass on Durant. You probably couldve packaged a couple of Outlaw, Webster, Frye, Sergio, and Bayless for another big or two and you’d probably have the best 1-2 punch in the league with Roy and Durant.

Thing A

by sam23 on Feb 26, 2009 1:11 PM PST up reply actions

He is better. Last season Durant was terribly inefficient, he has gotten much better this year. Roy, LMA, Durant is a hell of a scoring punch, but not good enough at defense.

This is a good post. Durant is a up and coming all-star. At 6-9 and the ability to play damn near any position on the wood. Scary. In 12 of his last 16 games, he’s scored 30+ and is the 4th leading scorer in the league. KD is that dude…

Imagine how good he would be if he were a Warrior

If Nellie stayed here for 3 more seasons, Durant would eventually average a triple double for a whole season as a Golden State Warrior.

And another thing, when the Sonics were looking for a place to move to last year, I was thinking about what would happen if they moved to Frisco. San Francisco SuperSonics.

I was thinking, with two Bay Area teams, it would be hard not to root for the team with the future superstar in Kevin Durant. I would have stayed a Warriors fan for life, though.

In ’84 they passed on Jordan for a talented but worrisomely fragile big man.

23 (!) years later, they passed on Durant for … a talented but worrisomely fragile big man.

Obviously Durant is not now (and will almost certainly never be) as great as Jordan. But the parallels are pretty eerie. It’s like the NBA version of Hitchcock’s Vertigo…

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Feb 25, 2009 11:59 AM PST up reply actions

DOnt forget

They passed the Rockets also passed up on him.

Sam Bowie was a nice player who knows what he would have become, but it never happened thanks to injuries. They had Clyde Drexler is why they didnt draft Jordan.

This time they passed up on Durant because they were sooooooooo weak at the 5 ( even though some people think Pryzbilla is productive! )

I agree is awkward, however its been half a season with Oden, give it time. Durant by the way, besides put up nice numbers hasnt done jack. Oden’s team is winning, Durant’s team is still useless.

Nobody cares about a loser.

by sjboy on Feb 25, 2009 2:10 PM PST up reply actions

Durant's not a loser

He’s not on a winning team. Sorry, I just get irritated when people blame things on wins and losses in a team game.

by Golden Boy on Feb 25, 2009 2:19 PM PST up reply actions

Let me clarify

I said no one cares for a loser. In general people likes winners, not losers. Not Durant = a loser. If you want to get technical, then he is a loser. He is the best player on one of the worst teams.

Is that fair? No, but I am saying putting up big numbers and losing is not new in the NBA, its also not impressive long term.

Again not saying its Durant’s case he needs more time obviously, but just explaining.

by sjboy on Feb 25, 2009 4:49 PM PST up reply actions

And I explained my take on it. Nothing more. Nothing less. You don’t have to agree with me, just like I don’t have to agree with you.

by Golden Boy on Feb 25, 2009 5:08 PM PST up reply actions

the Rockets also passed up on him.

dude, its pretty tough to be disappointed with the Dream. I dont think you can even really call that a mistake. I mean they passed on the greatest player of all time but they got themselves one of the top 5 centers of all time and a guy who was a great face for their franchise for 15+ years. I dont think you can have any regrets about that.

Durant by the way, besides put up nice numbers hasnt done jack.

The numbers he’s putting up this year are more than “nice.” He’s putting up stellar numbers and doesnt have anywhere NEAR the level of talent around him that Oden has. Its not even close. You say give it time with Oden and then you basically write Durant’s team off as losers…..that doesnt make sense, they may have as bright a future as Portland.
