Randolph HOF talk @ NBA.com

Follow this link for a brief discussion of AR's potential based on comments by Lamar Odom

http://www.nba.com/2009/news/features/dave_mcmenamin/02/25/rookie.rankings/index.html

Personally, don't see HOF in his future, but he has a lot of talent and this is a decent, honest write up.

I think Randolph might be the most highly regarded player not getting playing time in the NBA right now.  He is totally healthy and just not making it into the line up yet due to his lack of playing experience.

It would be interesting to take a couple players like him and Kevin Durant and compare their experiences playing hoops prior to the NBA.  Durant basically has the same build, but shoots the lights out and looks like he will break all the scoring records before he is done. Randolph in comparison is a rebounding/defensive minded guy who would like to handle and shoot the ball like a point guard, but lacks the skills at this level.

Is it possible Durant's brain is just wired in a different way, were their skills nurtured in different ways, or maybe Durant was much shorter for a long time and developed guard type skills while Randolph played as a big man early in life?

Effin' Odom

I hope Randolph doesn’t let any of this go to his head…

by disguy on Feb 27, 2009 9:41 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

well

if it motivates him to play even better and actually turns him into great player, than more power to him?

by jchao204 on Feb 27, 2009 10:18 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think

a 19 year old should be hearing HOF talk ever.

If it motivates him, that would be great but I’m thinking it’s more likely that he’ll get a big head if he buys into all that.

I don’t think a 19 year old should be hearing HOF talk ever.

Unless their name happens to be Lebron James.

i don't know about that

"If you hit .440 with 20 bombs, you don't have to do s---. You don't have to bring a glove to practice, just hit and leave whenever you want. You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball

Er ... what?

How about this for a mention: “LeBron James will be in the NBA Hall of Fame.” Barring a freak, career-ending injury in the next 3-4 years, he’s in. Heck, barring a freak injury, he’s going to be more eligible than 95% of the players in there. Guys like Alex English and Adrian Dantley are in there — what possible doubt could you have about LeBron?

Barring a freak, career-ending injury in the next 3-4 years, he’s in.

If he wins the MVP this year and retires he has a pretty good argument about getting into the hall of fame. If you check out the latest chatter from around the league they are talking about what a monster Lebron James has become on the defensive side.

Thing B

by warriorsscore110 on Mar 1, 2009 9:21 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i know the hall is supposed to reward long term success

BUT if lebron retired after winning the mvp this season, i think you’d have to consider him. he’s putting together one of the greatest single seasons i’ve ever seen. this isn’t just mj territory, it might be BETTER than any of mj’s individual seasons by the time it’s all said and done. what he is doing right now is amazing. i get confused when people bring up the mvp “race” and mention kobe; if it’s not lebron in a runaway, the voters made a terrible mistake.

and that talk about his defense has extended to “DPOY” whispers. he’s come a long way in that regard. he won’t beat howard this year, but he’ll get some votes. the guy is like a hurricane on both sides of the ball now. scary.

James is having a great year, an amazing year. But you should take a look at Jordan’s years again. It isn’t better than Jordan’s best.

by jae on Mar 1, 2009 10:34 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Jordan 87-88,

is really just silly. In fact Jordan 86-87 all the way to Jordan 90-91, is better than James this year.

Jordan 1987-1988
G 82
FG pct .535
FT pct .841
SPG 3.2
BPG 1.6
TO PG 3.1
RPG 5.5
APG 5.9
PPG 35.0

by warriorsscore110 on Mar 1, 2009 10:45 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

jordan’s ‘88-’89 season was absurd in particular. lebron’s approaching it right now and if there is a race for the 1 seed where lebron needs to kick it into another gear, he could. the qualifier “when it’s all said and done” probably wasn’t strong enough, but he’s close now and if he needs to, well, who’s to say he couldn’t…

although

actually, averaged over 82 games, it probably wouldn’t matter what he did for the last 10 or so. umm, statement retracted.

i’ll stand by saying that it’s close, and ridiculously impressive, but yeah, i got carried away.

by cap'n hack on Mar 1, 2009 10:51 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah,

no worries it happens to the best of us. James is having a monster season, I think he has been the best player in the league for the last 3 years. If this new commitment to defense isnt just a fad for James, we might be having a debate on which 23 is better at the end of his career.

we might be having a debate on which 23 is better at the end of his career.

  Of course it’s Jrich.
Lebron is power, MJ was grace both are tops in their own way.

Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?
I noticed there's so many of them
and there's really not that many of us.

LeBron is still 6 championships away

Until he gets to 3, there should be zero discussion of who’s the greatest. Zero.

It’s Robert Horry, of course ;-)

I know this was a different era, but...

Take a look at The Big O (or Horse, or Donut… weird nicknames, I’d like to see where they come from):

Career 25.7/9.5/7.5
Best season 30.8/11.4/12.5 (in his second season in the league)

Barring a freak, career-ending injury in the next 3-4 years, he’s in.

I think he’d still get in. The BBall HOF is not like the NFL or MLB HOF, it’s sport based, and the way he has become such an icon already will earn him plenty of points. To many, he defines the bygone era of straight from HS to the NBA (even though Kwame Brown really defines that era far better).

you never know

kobe was already drawing comparisons to jordan when he was 19.

i wouldn’t necessarily say kobe has a big head now though, but look at him now.

Kobe thinks he’s fouled on every play and he can get very animated.

He should get more technical fouls called against him.

Especially when the kid is already cocky enough

Randolph doesn’t need anymore people saying how good he is, he’s been babyed too much already in his career. He needs some tough love.

“RandHOF.”

Or maybe “RudHOF”?

based on comments by Lamar Odom

That Odom, a master of sarcasm! The big difference between durant and rudy is durant knows what he’s doing all the time, he plays in total control, not on the edge.

can we just hope that AR is a viable NBA starter before we start commisioning someone to chisel out his hall of fame bust?

He actually smiled in last nights game. It was after the dunk he made from Ronny’s pass.

Haha

Yeah, hopefully that won’t be the last time he makes himself smile. That was fun to watch.
