Morrow not in 3pt Shootout?!!

The contestants were announced earlier today and Morrow was not included.  The participants are:

Jason Kapono (Toronto Raptors) 42% from 3 and 52 3pt made

Mike Bibby (Atlanta Hawks)  40% from 3 and 114 made

Danny Granger (Indiana Pacers) 40% from 3 and 120 made

Rashard Lewis (Orlando Magic) 41.9% from 3 and 137 made

Roger Mason (San Antonio) 45% from 3 and 103 made

Daequon Cook (Miami Heat) 41% from 3 and 105 made

Those players are good three point shooters, but Morrow is leading the league in 3pt percentage.  Morrow stats are 50% from 3 and 42 made. I was really hoping to see him in this contest so the Warriors could be represented in some way.  Kapono is a given because he won it last year, and I can't argue with Roger Mason jr.  But Morrow could have taken any other spot.

Well,

Other than Kapono(who probably got grand fathered in) all those guys have more name recognition, and have made ALOT more 3’s than AM. All right, this is like what 4 years running that we have absolutely no all star weekend representetivs.

We will probably need to be patient and let this season play out.

Yeah you're right....

I know Morrow did not make as many 3’s, but he plays less minutes than all of those guys. Kapono has to be in it, but name recognition is a big part of the contest.

I do recall correctly

1991-1992 was his last season in the NBA: http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hodgecr01.html

in 1993, he made it to the 2nd round of the 3pt shootout: http://www.nba.com/history/allstar/shootout_results_1990s.html

damn

No Morrow OR Buike. Its tough to really argue with the merits of any of those guys though. Kapono is probably the least productive of the bunch, but he’s the defending champ.

W. T. F.

Seriously.

I am actually curious what the heck their criteria is, as only one of these six guys (Mason at .450) is in the Top 19 NBA 3-pt shooters by percentage.

5. Mason .450
20. Kapono .419
20. Lewis .419
31. Cook .410
39. Bibby .409
46. Granger .401

Most of them are up there in total threes made, though Kapono is at #73. And if star quality / entertainment value is a decisive factor, where the hell are Ray Allen and Kevin Durant? Seems like if there was ever a situation to go straight by the numbers, it’s in a freaking 3 pt. shooting contest. If they had a FT shooting contest, could they arbitrarily vote to leave out Jose Calderon?

The best way

Would be to let the guys who think they should be in it put up 50G for a winner take all purse, Nellie could bankroll Morrow and win some spare change .
BTW does the selection process include asking prospective contestants if they want to participate? Maybe some of the likely guys just wanted the time off instead?

Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?

A few points

First off, they clearly went with people who have made a lot of 3s. The only person under 100 on the list is Kapono, and they have to invite him, since he won last year.

Also, 3 point shooting can’t really be measured by percentage. Think about Ray Allen – he is the most respected 3 point shooter in the game. anyone will tell you he is the best. Is morrow better, just because he has a better 3 pt%? No. Morrow gets less defensive respect, and is therefore more open. He shoots less, and can afford to only take wide open shots.

I love Morrow, but I can’t say he necessarily deserves to be in this contest. You don’t see him shooting 10 a game, like Allen or Lewis. Or hitting buzzer beaters with hands in his face, like Allen or Mason. he is a great pure shooter, but I don’t think we can determine him as one of the best in the league when he’s made 42 in his career….

by bradyk2 on Feb 4, 2009 4:21 PM PST reply actions

He's not in the game

long enough to shoot more 3’s because Nellie doesn’t give him many minutes like the other players on that list.

by AlbinoWhale on Feb 4, 2009 4:27 PM PST up reply actions

ah, yes

I was wondering how long it would be until we could blame Nellie for not having an All-Star representative. Because obviously all those other teams in the league that all passed on Morrow at least twice, would be playing him way more than Nelson is. Obviously. Now that we’ve clearly established that Nellie is at fault here, how about the financial crisis? how can we dump that one on Nellie?

In the 3-pt shootout

There are no hands in your face. And there’s no pressure. It’s just about who has the purest stroke, which Morrow — this season, senior year in college (44.8, best in the ACC, iirc), and in the LV Summer League (85.7!!) — has done nothing to prove he doesn’t own.

Most threes made seems to me like a piss-poor way to decide who goes. Why reward the ballhogs — everyone gets the same number of shots in the shootout, right? But hey, even if total goals made were the criteria (which it isn’t) I’d be OK with it, ‘cos it least it is a criteria, unlike the totally arbitrary system they currently use. If they picked only the guys the fans voted in, I’d be cool with that too. But any game, even one as trivial as qualifying for the 3 point shootout, is totally infuriating and stupid without clear and transparent rules.

aye i heard....

a while back that J-Rich was going to be participating in the 3 point shootout. Yall know if that’s true or not? I guess they took him off the list because his % dropped. Someone told me that he wanted to be the first guy to win the dunk contest and the 3 point shootout! that would be pretty sick.

by ItsDatFriscoSwag415 on Feb 5, 2009 8:37 AM PST up reply actions

Except

I’m not saying most made. I’m just saying that Ray Allen is obviously a better 3 point shooter than Anthony Morrow, yet this is not reflected in his stats.

This was epitomized by JJ Redick, his senior season at duke. Redick was acclaimed by virtually everyone as the greatest shooter in college history, and yet he didn’t even lead the league in 3 point percentage. Because defenses focused on him so much, he often took step-backs, well-defended, and 30 foot 3-pointers. Were these bad shots? No, he finished 3rd, I believe, in 3pt fg%. But his shots were so much harder than the people ahead of him, it was clear he was the superior shooter.

I love morrow, I really do, but he hasn’t had the opportunity to make enough to prove himself this year.

kapono sucks big time. he may have a decent % from 3 but otherwise he is donkey balls.

second of all, morrow would be in if he had more total 3’s.

yeah kapono sucks...

The only reason he is in is because he won it last year. It’s unfair how they choose the players for this contest, but yeah you are right I think he probably would have made it if he had more total 3pt made. But that is not his fault when he gets so little playing time.

What I dont get...

Area Daequon Cook and Roger Mason such big household names that they need to be in the contest?

You would think that Kelenna or Morrow should be placed in the contest because their numbers are better (Kelenna has as many attempts as Kapono with more makes) and they are a better story for people to get into. Undrafted players who make good in the big league? Come on, what’s better than that?

Everyone loves a Cinderella story in this country. I hope the Warriors front office makes a really big stink with the NBA powers that be and I really hope some of the national media call teh NBA out for this.
