Props to Jamal....... and (sorry guys) more Monta stuff.......
I don't know about you guys, but the way Jamal Crawford conducts himself and acts speaks truly of his character. Let's face it, the Warriors organization hasn't really treated this guy very well since he has been here. He probably feels underappreciated (which may too some extent may be justified), and if talks about Nelson and him are true, he should be very upset and fed up by now. Yet, Jamal goes out, and tries to do what is asked of him. He makes no excuses, and honestly just plays. Think about how upset you'd be if your head coach comes up to you and asks you to opt out or you'll be traded. I'd bolt the team right away. This doesn't even matter about his actual performance (which I don't even think is that bad) and I don't want to hear comments saying "we don't need a nice guy, but we need someone that can play." Well first off, this guy can play, but I think Neliie is preventing Crawford of playing to his full capabilities. Let's not forget how well the Knicks were doing the first few weeks under the D'Antoni system and Crawford was averging 20+ points shooting a great percentage. Second, as far as the attitude goes, that is very important and this will lead me into the next topic of discussion, Monta Ellis.
Monta Ellis just seems completely disinterested in the team. I posted a few weeks ago how he left the game early because from what it looked like he was upset that he got taken out of the game. Now, the next day we learned that his ankle was still hurting him so I lt it slide. But once reports came out that he admitted that he wasn't hurt at all, I thought back to that Oklahoma City game at home where he showed absolutely no interest in the team. Monta Ellis has been doing this for some time, as I have been to many games lately. When the Warriors go on a huge run, everyone on the team will get up and give high fives, but one guy is always sitting on the bench, Monta Ellis. Now, I love this guy and I don't know what's going on in his personal life but if this is the attitude that Monta is going to have (unless there is something going on with his mother, etc.) then I don't want him on the team. Plain and simple. I dont' know if his ego went up or what, but he is definitely not the same Monta Ellis from last season for whatever reason.

Crawford is being messed around every freakin game. The guy is pure quality IMO, he behaviour on court, off court, to the media, is sheer quality. There are a few other tan Andris andTuriaf thatcould learn a lot from Crawford and how he presents himself. Sheer class.
There is no doubt, that Crawford has the handles to be the proper PG that the Warriors should play through. He setsup plays, DESTROYS men marking him and makes some pretty sweet passes, round that off with an ability to score 50 points when conditions are right……
THAT is a player I really want us to keep.

Crawford is one of the definitions of class
Where as of late, Monta is the definition of immaturity. As you can probably see by the posts on this site lately, people probably act like Monta or Crawford, depending on which one you like better. I’ve seen few, I repeat, very few people with maturity here who would prefer Monta.
by Golden Boy on Mar 13, 2009 8:03 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
regardless of whether one sees Craw as handling his situation with more class than Monta has handled his, we must keep in mind their ages, their abilities, and their contracts to evaluate them in the context of the whole team … Monta is younger, has some growing up to do but also still has some unfulfilled potential despite how great he’s played last season, and with a longer and better contract than Crawford. Nonetheless, one other variable I haven’t seen in your posts GB (and it may just be that I missed it) is that despite his injury Monta may be more trade-able than Crawford – which is not to suggest I prefer that route. The combination of age, talent, and contract makes Monta the more attractive player. We are likely to still have both next season: Monta is too valuable to move, and Crawford too expensive to find any takers nor should we expect him to opt out. We’d be foolish to let Monta go when we’d likely only have Crawford for one more season while we have Ellis locked up for several years.
We’re more likely to move Maggette than Crawford, both coming off the bench could be a problem as both need the ball in their hands to produce, and the loss would be Marco & KAz’s to some extent. Sadly, our FO has backed itself into a corner where the best we can realistically hope for is unloading the “least-worst contract” (Maggette) for a pick in a poor draft class, or a marginal player + 2nd rounder, just to clear salary. If we do move Maggette and Crawford plays out next season and is not re-signed, then by the time Nelson rides off into the sunset we’ll also have a greater degree of roster & salary cap flexibility than we have now.
by hardcore on Mar 15, 2009 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think Maggette's going anywhere
I also know for a fact Monta’s not going anywhere. It’s just my opinion to keep Crawford. I’d honestly like to have them both if I wouldn’t have to worry about Ellis being a distraction/cancer. I just don’t think anyone else on our team has the handles to play pg in Nelly’s system.

but as we’ve seen thoughout his career he has even better potential of going 4-16…he has a lot more of those games. how can you overlook this so easily?

Let Crawfish opt out and play this lineup next year:
PG: Monta
SG: Ammo
SF: Cap
PF: Randy
C: Driz
Maggs, Rony, Buike, BW, CJ/Belli/new backup PG
Four out of your starting five rebound their position very well, and you have two distribution points to feed a balanced scoring attack. The biggest issue then clearly becomes getting a backup PG, preferably one with some size and defensive prowess.

+1 and a rec.
That lineup totally works for me … especially if that backup PG is Rubio, getting 20-25 minutes a night, with Monta spending about half his PT as the de facto SG. Realistic plan B is Ty Lawson. So long as it’s someone whose primary skill is handling and distributing the rock at a Nellieball pace, without turning it over 4-5 times a game. It would also help, as you say, if that someone played a little D, as both Rubio and Lawson seem to do (much more so than Craw in any case).

Definetly. I am not advocating, lets blow the whole thing up just for blowing it up. But we have to look to move every player on our roster and if we can find a trade that would be beneficial in improving this team than we have to do it. To sit here and hope with 1 draft pick, our team will somehow morph into a playoff team, that can someday go deep into the playoffs, is irrational.

You never know
Our second rounder this year could be the Monta Ellis of power forwards… and our first rounder could be the Chris Paul of PGs… wait a second, Chris Paul is a PG… anyways. You know my opinion on the team. We’ll be in that 7-10 slot playoff contention next year with zero roster changes. I’d like to see us boost our line up, but it’s unlikely to happen.

That lineup looks pretty good...
All 5 players, (Even Biedrins because he’s shown he can do it a little bit bfore) can handle the ball and you know Nellie loves that. We got 2 three point threats (Ammo/Jack) with Biedrins hanging out downlow to pluck some offensive boards/ putbacks or run some pick and rolls. We also got a very versatile 4 that is going to get better and better as his confidence grows. I agree that we need to pick up a point guard in the draft. A lot of people think we need another guy who can play the 4 spot and I don’t agree. That’s because we have AR and BW who will work out just fine at that spot. I think the way that these guys are built is perfect for a run and gun tempo. They’re tall, lengthy and fast. Plus they can handle the basketball (Ar does it better than BW obviously). So I definitely think we should pick up the best PG we can find in the draft expecially since it’s so loaded with PGs. Ty Lawson would be a very nice pick up IMO. Also, our bench looks good. There’s a whole lot of firepower waiting to come off and spark the team.

everyone was screaming about picking up Bosh / Amare when the trade deadline was coming. Everyone was claiming that all we needed was a ligit OF (myself included). AR and BW
are obviously not your traditional physical, big bodied, bang it down low power forwards. They’re more of tweener 4’s, especially Randolph. What each of these players lack in weight and strength, they make up for in quickness, length, ball handling and more finesse around the rim. I think there’s a lot of talent there, especially considering that they’re both extremely young and can get much better down the line. I’ve seen lots of good things from both of these guys (Obviously much more from AR recently because of BW injury) and I don’t even think we’ve touched the tip of the ice berg with either of them yet. I think it’s still too early to judge them. I wouldn’t write them off just yet, as a matter of fact, I don’t think I would write them off at all because I think they’re going to be very effective on this team because they’re perfect for the up tempo style that the Warriors play. Now that AR has gotten some run, he’s going to get more comfortable with the speed of the NBA level. As for Wright, he was doing lots of good things before he got injured and I hope he can come back healthy without any problems. It’s going to take some time but I’m confident that he will. However, even after all this being said, if there was a much better offer on the table that would benefit our team and it included having to trade one or the other, I’d still have to consider it. That goes for almost everyone on this squad. It’s just a given.
They can't stop me!!

I’m not saying write them off, but I think its a bit premature to say we have plenty of talent at the 4…..it sounds like youre saying we have enough talent at at least 4 or the 5 spots-if that were the case this team would be a whole lot better injuries or not.

It’s a fair point, but let’s not forget — these guys have actually played well. Wright’s been consistently productive whenever he’s gotten a shot, and Randolph, while horrible as a small forward, has been pretty good at the 4 and 5.
People do often confuse potential talent with talent, but projecting good things from Wright and Randolph isn’t 100% wishcasting. They’ve played well in their NBA careers thus far. That doesn’t necessarily mean we’re set at power forward, but it’d be a mistake to consider the position a gaping hole. The main problem with power forward this season has been Nellie’s frequent refusal to use one, not Wright and Randolph.

but projecting good things from Wright and Randolph isn’t 100% wishcasting.
That’s just my point. It’s still projecting, which means that while they’re not viable NBA starters, it’s easy to see them trending to that level next year or the year afterwards. Look, I’m a fan of these guys too, but let’s not take the cake out of the oven before it’s done cooking, OK?

Bigs handling the ball is good in the sense that it catches the defense totally off guard...
and gives us a better chance to attack when they’re least expecting it but I’d still like to see a true pg be the designated ball handler like the more traditional teams do. With Nelson’s offense, I think guys get confused because everyone shares the responsibility of bringing the ball up and our offense is never set so people don’t know when they’re gonna get the ball or if they’re gonna get the ball and that leads to the stupid turnovers that you see constantly from this squad. Did you see that back court violation ffrom last nights game where Jack had to jump over the half court line but he got whistled for the violation? plain stupid!

I think Rubio has the skills we need.
He can defend the perimeter and be the “floor general”, but jennings would be a good fit as well. He can make all the passes and penetrate the lane to suck in the defense, then kick the ball out to the open guard or cutting big man.

I don't think Jamal cares about money
I think he’s rich enough. If Jack was treated the same way, would he be happy? Certainly not. There was a article about when he injured his left wrist/hand (I think) and Nellie told him to let it heal. It was said he didn’t continue practice and left. Good Jack did let the injured heal before he resume his game.
Shall I take it that no one ever told you off? You have never had a single day in your work life that you didn’t considered a bad day? In times where that feeling still lingers?
It takes a bigger person to see the bigger picture. Jamal is good at that. At least he’s mature to not let it get in the way of his game. It appears that he still tries to produce. That is something to applaud him for. (if not, one should compare him to Al Harrington)

Im not thrilled about having Rubio replacing Crawford and basically the same roster as this season.
First of all, we aren’t getting the second pick. And that’s OK.
Second of all, calling that “basically the same lineup” is pretty misleading. I think last night was the first game ever that Monta and Randolph both played, and played well, on the floor at the same time. Moreover, both of these guys are going to be much better next year than they are right now. AR because he will continue to develop and expand his game, Monta because he will continue to get his explosiveness and jumpshot back (which were really on display last night, btw). Finally, having a knock-down shooter like Ammo lurking around the perimeter should really open things up for the playmakers. While it’s true you basically know what you are getting with Cap’n, I think that he will be much better off when he has a full cast around him that he can trust. AB has more upside than people give him credit for (and even if he didn’t improve at all he would still be well above average for a center).

Agreed, except for this
First of all, we aren’t getting the second pick.
We’re roughly a 10% shot (9.2%) at #1 or 2, given our current record. Not likely, but not to be discounted totally (except as a “I don’t wanna get my hopes up only to have them dashed” type-deal). We’re talking roughly the chances of, say, Ray Allen missing a FT. Dream high, man!
And that’s OK.
Agreed. Lawson is a decent plan B. Either way, we gotta hope Craw opts out or can be dealt. Not to diss Craw — cool dude, tough guy, occasionally fun to watch, etc. But he just doesn’t make sense at $2/20M, on a team that already has Monta, Jack, Morrow, Buki, and Belinelli, plus a decent pick in a PG-rich draft.

because
its still an AWFUL contract. This offseason nobody would offer him anything close to 4/40 mil even if they had the cap room, and I think we will owe him a bit more than that. I dont think too many people have ever said he simply isnt a good player, but many of us arent getting so googly eyed over his recent 2 month stretch that we dont see the big picture. The guy is incredibly injury prone and isnt going to get any better and has only come close to earning his pay for less than half the time he’s been here……so why shouldn’t we still want to get rid of him?

This recieved wisdom that he has an AWFUL contract is bogus. Awful contracts are those that lock up 10-12 mil per year to get the same production as a guy making half that much. Raef LaFrentz had an awful contract, Adonyl Foyle had an awful contract, and as much as I love him, BD now has an awful contract. Maggette is earning his money. Also, in the time since Maggs was signed, a few little things like the subprime mortgage crisis, the stock market collapse, and the destruction of trillions of dollars in equity have had at least a minor impact on the overall economy. To say that his contract is unjustified because he couldn’t get it now just ignores all that. Look at Gordon on the Bulls. He left $50 million on the table because he thought he could get more. It was a stupid move on his part, but if the economy had remained strong he very well may have made even more. Finally, even if you do buy into this AWFUL contract business, why would you accept what would necessarily end up being less than market value just to dump it?

Maggette is earning his money.
Like I said before he’s earned his money for 2 months…..the 3 months prior he didnt come close to earning it. Yes you can blame it on injuries and playing out of position a bit, but this season is a fairly accurate microcosm of his entire career: up and down play and significant time lost to injury. Thats not a guy that we should be paying 10-12 mil per on a long term deal as he crosses over onto the wrong side of 30, Its awful.
To say that his contract is unjustified because he couldn’t get it now just ignores all that.
Not really. Even if the economy were in the same state it was this time last year he wouldnt get that deal again. We were the only team willing to offer that ridiculous deal and now we know better.
Finally, even if you do buy into this AWFUL contract business, why would you accept what would necessarily end up being less than market value just to dump it?
ummm…..to dump it. If we could trade him off for a shorter deal would you really not be in favor of that? Say we couldve swapped him for LaFrentz at the deadline…you wouldve opposed that deal?

?
1. thats not true, there are plenty of guys who are. Like Skeptic said there are plenty who are on the Warriors’ roster
2. some guys arent earning their money but at least they have to potential to do so before their contracts are up. While Monta hasnt come close to earning his new contract yet its not unreasonable to think he may do so before it expires. Maggette is having something of a career year and he STILL isnt giving us great value for his contract. If he plays the way he has for the last two months for the entire remainder of his contract he’ll have been a good deal. Considering his history of injuries and sporadic play and his age thats not even close to a realistic expectation.

People just wanna be liked
Jamal is being a trooper because Nellie obviously doesn’t like his game. Yeah he’s getting paid, but he wants some love and respect.
Actually, I think Nellie is giving him respect by telling him upfront their intentions. it’s crap that the agent (obviously) leaked it.
Maybe it’s more Nellie 3 – level chess. Offer Jamal for a stud 4, a bit out of Jamal’s value. keep pushing him, then when the other team counters asking for Monta instead – blam, pull the trigger. who ever wants Jamal, probably needs Monta even more.
No more Maggette trade talk. the dude can close out a game!
Honestly, I think Jamal and Monta are not long for the W’s. Morrow is the future 2. He just needs to grow into an NBA game.

morrow is going to be a really good spot up shooter
but I don’t think he’ll ever be good enough to be a legit starting 2. He’s just not good enough at driving to the basket, he’s too one dimensional (although that dimension is very good).
by Calamity on Mar 12, 2009 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Adonal Foyle was a good guy and a model citizen. Maybe we should have kept him too? Honestly, I don’t think Nellie was letting Foyle play to his full capabilities. He didn’t even let him play at all!
If anything, the Warriors front office has wasted too much money on the “good guys” in this league (Foyle, Dunleavy, Murphy, Fisher) and has done very little to recognize actual basketball talent.

Dude, this is totally my opinion
If you disagree, that’s fine. But He obviously likes to take 3s. As the seasons have proven, that’s a big part of the Warriors’ game. He’s a run and gun type of player. That’s what Nelly Ball is all about. In terms of ball handling, he’s a magician with the ball. Dude in all honesty, you’re making me say things that I’ve been saying in other posts. I’m honestly getting tired of that. But you guys can’t seem to accept the fact that my personal preference is having Crawford over Monta. And I don’t know what else to say. But don’t worry, I’m not the team GM.
by Golden Boy on Mar 12, 2009 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh. Crawford is a perfect fit in Nellie ball. Really?
Why doesn’t he show it then, by being a bit more efficient. Monta is going to be Monta again once next year rolls in. Monta is perfect for Nellie Ball (as he has already proved) and he is much more efficient.
Also, we shouldn’t be building for Nellie ball. It hasn’t won any championships for a reason – It doesn’t work. You build a team of good players, not nice players.

I’d rather have Jamal too than look at Moped’s lying mug every game. Some things are more important than raw potential. Jamal’s a pro who has his head on straight and their game is similiar enough to tip the scales in Crawford’s favor.

I like Jamal and all as a basketball player and as a stand up guy but our situation would work out better if he were to opt out. He’s just getting paid way too much and we have way too many guards on this team so if he were to leave, we wouldn’t really have to do much to fill his void. However, the smart move for Crawford would not be to opt out given the state of the economy. I don’t know if other teams would be willing to pay him more than that. And You’re right though, the Warriors have shelled out a ton of cash to the “good guys”. Like the saying goes “personality goes a long way”. In warriors land, I guess personality lands you a fat contract too!

Crawford=Mature, very classy, but 29 yr old with much less potential and basically just a jumpshooter who is streaky with absolutely no defense.
Monta=Immature, but only 23 yr old and if he returns to form will be one of the most dynamic players in the league for the next 10+ years. Not to mention his ability to drive to the hoop and score at the rim is only second to Lebron James. This is MUCH more valuable than jump shooting.
