Non-shock Warriors update: Mullin’s fate is sealed, Cohan isn’t selling, Ellis is under the microscope [Talking Points]
Lumping Robert Rowell (a man with ZERO hoops IQ and poor customer relations skills) and Don Nelson (a brilliant, but very eccentric basketball mind) together is incredibly faulty. Totally glossing over Chris Mullin's numerous horrendous mistakes (plus the spotty draft record) during his front office tenure with the Warriors and absolving him of any blame for the state of this poor roster, while implying that only "Rowell and Nelson have tied up the team with those ungainly long contracts" (Nelson isn't the one who signed Monta, Jack, Maggette, or Biedrins) is also very curious.

"The Rowell Loyalists probably have been planning a Dump Mullin Celebration"
Wait…there are actually Rowell Loyaists out there?! I highly doubt that and if there are, I could probably count them on my hands.
WARRIORS BASKETBALL!!! Patiently waiting for a title...I may be waiting for a long time...

Cause Williams has better point skills.
Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?

Nothing new here. Kawakami just regurgitates the same story

Nothing new here.
Why doesn’t someone just interview Mullin and see what’s up? Don’t these guys get paid to do that kind of stuff?

CCT: Nelson "comes clean"
"I’m loaded in the backcourt. If I’m going to move (swingman Stephen) Jackson into the backcourt, now I’m really overloaded. I think he’s too good a player to be a 10- or 15-minute player, as a backup player. Wherever Jack plays, there’s not many minutes left. Wherever (guard) Monta (Ellis) plays when he’s healthy, there won’t be very many minutes left. Those positions should be backed up by somebody making less than 8 or 9 — or whatever his contract is — million dollars a year.
“So he makes too much money as a backup player,” Nelson continued. “So being open and honest with my player, I don’t know if it’s criticism or what, but that’s the way it is. I’m that way with all my players all the time. I get criticized sometimes for it. So be it.”"
So this is a surprise?! As soon as that trade was made some of us were saying the same thing, and if we could see it why was this trade so quickly and eagerly made in the wake of the Maggette signing, Monta & AB re-signing, and after the Jackson extension?! (and yes, that was Rowell)
G-damn it Nellie, the Crawford trade cemented our inflexibility going forward. … as for Mullin’s culpability, I’ve lambasted him regularly about his moves prior to this past off-season, but support every move purportedly to have been his this summer: attempting to re-sign BD at $39m/3y, re-signing our RFAs, snagging Turiaf at the right price, matching the offer to KAz at the right price, and even adding the best FA available once we lost Baron – Maggette. It figures, now that Mullin’s making better decisions he’s being forced our by Rowell.
God bless us in the draft, because we can’t even position ourselves for a higher pick when it’s within our ability to do so …

Mullin, Harrington and Crawford
There’s lots of ifs:
If Mullin had traded Harrington last year when he should have: Would the Warriors have made a better deal? Would they have kept Barnes, who would have helped some this year? The other way of looking at it is that perhaps the Ws just rented Crawford for a year anyway. Monta was out. They needed a point guard for the year. Crawford could always opt out and if he didn’t, he’s very tradeable, more so than Harrington, I think. You have to think they knew Crawford and Monta would never be able to give them enough defense for that to be a starting backcourt. I still think the Ws will start next year with a real point guard and it won’t be Monta.

M8, you could be right on one of these “what ifs?” – but I’m certainly not so blind as to think Harrington was all that valuable to other teams or GSW would have moved him sooner seeing as Nelson and he had not been seeing eye-to-eye for some time. And we didn’t get the better “rent” player in terms of contract that’s for sure.
NYK got the “rent-able” player in Harrington, who’s contract was much less a pill to swallow and allowed them the opportunity to free cap-space in the LJ chase. I sure hope you’re right that Crawford is trade-able – the fact that Nelson publicly admitted he asked him to opt out doesn’t bode well for his being traded. Secretly I think Nelson is playing Crawford big minutes to give other teams a good look hoping to entice some kind of move.
If Nelson did know that Crawford & Monta weren’t going to be the long-term duo then we should never have dealt for that contract. Who cares who played PG for this year’s GSW if the playoffs were out of the picture? In fact, we’d’ve been better off without Crawford’s contract and let the PG-by-committee system ensure we ended up with a high pick (sorry to beat that drum so much!)
As for next year, Nelson has said he wants to start Monta and Jax, which may not be a conventional 1-2 punch but both are unconventional players who could compliment each other – we’ll see. My hope is Jax at SG allows us to have a bigger and better defensive lineup – he’s also said Randolph is a potential SF, wouldn’t that be something with his rebounding? and his slight build might not be such a disadvantage there either. He’d split time there with Maggette off the bench, Kaz and/or Marco behind Jax, Wright backing up a new PF, and Turiaf backing up Andris and we’d be competing for an 6-8th seed perhaps. The new PF slides everyone else into position. I’m keeping fingers crossed.

get off monta....
he’s played what 14 games this season, rushed back on a bad ankle and hardly any at PG. I’m not sold he’s a PG but im willing to give him a try… this season is a wash and thats a shame but he’s always proven a hard worker and a professional. Give him offseason and i guarantee he comes back stronger…He’s improved so much before why cant he continue… remember he couldnt shoot? Then had arguably 1 of the best midrange game for a small guy last year. He’s not in bball shape the way the rest of league is, thats natural considering he hasnt played…. Lets just look for improvement and decide at end of season
anyone remember dwade last year? injuries, everyone thought he was done as an elite player, questioned his olympic inclusion… He then worked hard in summer and i’d argue hes been best player in nba this year. Monta is nowhere near Dwade’s class (yet), but perhaps an offseason where hes out to prove something and who knows.
1 thing monta has shown me is he is a “warrior” He is a true competitor and I can guarantee he does NOT like all this talk about him being a flop
