Open Thread - Warriors vs. Mavs

Dallas Mavericks at Golden State Warriors, Mar 13, 2009 7:30 PM PDT

   Mavs_medium
You telling me we can't beat this?

Warriors (W-L): 22-42

Mavs (W-L): 40-25

Tipoff: 7:30 PDT

TV: CSN, CSNHD

Radio: KNBR

Remember when Mavs vs. Warriors actually meant something? Remember when we would waive the yellow towels and sport our We Believe shirts and try to drown out Dirk and their crew at every timeout? Feels like that was 10 years ago.

Tonight we can somewhat reminisce with the Mavs in town but here is what is on the line for both teams:

Mavs - Need to push up the playoff ladder to have a chance so this is a must win for them.
Warriors - Nellie needs to groom his young guns so this an opportunity to see how we fair against a good team.

Outcome: On paper it looks as though the Warriors will lose by a lot. I'm talking about double digit "lot". But here's the thing. The Warriors always bring their A game when playing the Mavs. I don't know what it is but we always seem to have an edge against them. I think it's the Nellie factor and I'm happy for it! I think we have a fighting chance but for superstition reasons I'll contradict myself in the predictions section. I actually believe.

GO WARRIORS!

Predictions:

  • Warriors keep the game close ... within 12.
  • Dirk starts slow but ends the night with 24 points.
  • Monta is able to run past Kidd and create 20 points and 2 assists.
  • AR disappoints me again.
  • 10% of the crowd wears their "We Believe" Shirts.
Poll
There is traffic on I80. The game is about to tip off and Monta is stuck in traffic. He’s 4.5 miles away but the highway is a parking lot. How does he make it to the game on time?

Somebody should photoshop Dirk & Steve onto this photo

Yes, I don’t know how to use photoshop very well, and yes I know it’s not that hard and I’m just lazy.

Playoffs for mavs

They should be fine, suns are way behind them. Suns are us last year, though we might have had more wins than they will this year.

by mosdl on Mar 13, 2009 10:50 AM PDT reply actions

Good luck GS

avenge our loss to them!!

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

Heh

I’d think Suns fans would want that more than blazer fans.

BTW, I think it is time to switch to hating the celtics – KG is behaving worse than kobe.

I hate the C’s too. But I have hated the L@kers for much longer. If it is a L@kers/Celtics Finals again, I’ll just not watch and hope that they both somehow lose.

A couple dunks doesn't make him a stud.

averaging 7 points and 7 rebounds isn’t what i call exciting. His attitude + lack of hustle + desire to showboat after one decent play = bust!

I challenge him to prove me wrong, but after each game i wonder how he’ll help our franchise make the playoffs anytime soon.

by YaoButtaMing on Mar 13, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

rebounding

He helps use play bigger, which is a major deficit for this team, especially without baron to keep turnovers down.

Dunno if that makes us playoffs capable (9 teams with winning records again this season for the west).

by mosdl on Mar 13, 2009 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Lack of Hustle?

kid challenges every shot! he sprints down the floor faster than anyone else without the ball! are you watching the same guy we are?

Monta is the singular of Montus, of the Montai

by Supafishal on Mar 13, 2009 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

AR has been better lately, a LOT better

His attitude is much calmer, in control. In fact, opponents are annoyed at him now, and he maintains his composure still. He is hustling, going for blocks and rebounds. He doesn’t showboat as before. He plays within the game now.

by IQofaWarrior on Mar 13, 2009 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

agreed

much better … but i’ve been burned in the past about getting excited about our young players so i’m hoping he proves me wrong!

Webber

AR is too young to make that big of a difference. If he had waited 2 more years and then joined, he could have that impact.

People forget he came in young – granted, Monta was like that too, and took him a while to make a difference (pre-moped)

i was skeptical about randolph at the beginning of the year

but he’s shown a lot lately. first avg’in 7 and 7 is good for any rookie..he’s also playing much better in recent games, showing composure etc. he’s going to be a good player, i don’t see anything from stopping him…

randolph has shown more than a few dunks against yao.

i’ve got an idea for you. start watching warriors games, then you might no what you’re talking about

really?
i actually think that’s pretty sad. he’s now playing over 24 minutes a game and scoring less then 10 points is good for you?
good luck

by YaoButtaMing on Mar 13, 2009 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's see

His shooting percentage has improved every month he’s been in the league and has gone from 34% to 53%. He’s averaging 9.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks in 24 minutes in March. He’s playing well. And he’s playing extremely well for a rookie. Not everybody’s job on the basketball court is to score.

Ben Wallace in 03-04 only scored 10 points a game. He wasn’t a main cog on a championship team that year, was he? Couldn’t be, he didn’t score a lot. What’s my point? Scoring isn’t everything.

This is true. Weird perception thing. I used to say that we always bring our a-game against the lakers, rivalry, blah blah…then i see the record and it’s something hilarious and lopsided.

The big question

If he plays – starter or backup? I’d go with backup – maggs on 3 and he on 4.

by mosdl on Mar 13, 2009 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

When Wright comes back, someone else's minutes will suffer.

EIther Buike’s will suffer, because he will no longer play the 4, or Crawford’s, because Nellie will shift Buike to the 3, Jack to the 2, and Crawford to the bench, or AR, because Nellie will split the minutes at the 4 between Wright and AR.

by IQofaWarrior on Mar 13, 2009 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

that's cool...

the best player should play. I think sooner than a lot of people think Wright is going to develop into a very nice player on the court. Buike was always a reserve in my eyes.

i'd hate to see him go..

but he’s built up his stock since he’s been with the Warriors and maybe we could deal him in package to get a veteran point guard or just someone better. who knows? he’s a good player, definitely one of my favorites on this squad but he’s very expendable especially if the terms are on point.

The Ultimate Opportunist

common, it is nellie

that's true

wright just looked soooo good in his first game back

by IQofaWarrior on Mar 13, 2009 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

perhaps

Nellie was afraid he would get hurt, seeing how bigs were dropping like flies there.

by mosdl on Mar 13, 2009 10:18 PM PDT up reply actions

After reading some recaps

I think Nellie went to smaller, quicker ball to do his classic double team on Dirk. This could also be why Wright didn’t come back.

by IQofaWarrior on Mar 13, 2009 11:31 PM PDT up reply actions

BEST GAME OF THE YEAR

1) to all you monta haters….just look at our record with him compared to without?? he really is starting to look like the old monta again!

2) to u randolph haters (yaobuttaming)…i dont know how you can hate on the youngest guy in the league playing as he does!

3) WRIGHT!!!! wow he really hasnt skipped a beat since he got injured, he played amazingly with a ton of confidence

4) jack/turiaf tearin it up as the vets!! gotta love jacksons game when hes not being headstrong and going pure ISOS

5) WE DONT NEED MAGGS, period. he hurts our team more than he helps offensively and defensively…yes he gets numbers but he doesnt get others involved and doesnt help the pace of our game (which also helps others). defensively at his position he is almost always a liability.

6) i love crawford, but i really hope he opts out both for the team and himself. he would be an excellent 6th man on any top team

SO…tonight was a look at our future (altho we didnt get to see it with andris for most of the game). I cant wait to see these lineups when crawford/maggs are gone:

1: ellis
2: jackson
3: randolph
4: wright
5: andris

and

1: ellis
2: buki/morrow
3: jackson
4: wright/randolph
5: andris

CJ

is a good backup – had a couple of off games – remember him wining the celtics game with back to back mid range jumpers, one over KG!

monta/marco/cj as pgs is a pretty decent combo

You forgot turiaf btw :)

by Shells on Mar 13, 2009 10:06 PM PDT up reply actions

that was good

I hope bwright can join that competition – though he is more of a scorer it seems.

Imagine this combo – ar/beans – ar blocks, beans goes for rebounds. bwright/turiaf – ronny for blocks, bwright for rebounds.

And davidson can rebound too as a 3rd big

by mosdl on Mar 13, 2009 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions

heh

Makes up for TOs since we have no real PG – I bet that is why nellie wants to go bigger, if we can rebound more and limit 2nd chance shots, we can win more games and become respectable.

I wonder if that means he gets waived soon? He’s mainly there to help with practice, so no need to waive him now.

hm...probably not

then again, I don’t think Kirkland make cranberry-peach juice. I think they have cranberry, and cranberry raspberry. 2 gallons for $6-7ish. Costco was only good when they allow the executive members to go an hour earlier than the other members. Now, it’s a battlefield in there!

A+ for #8

Now, that’s the Monta we’ve been waiting for…I really hope to the highest power that he will stay that way for at least the rest of the season…even though tanking won’t be that bad either lol

A+ for Ronny
For being such a nice guy…I mean how many NBA players mops the floor without any thought of it? I think he was just being nice knowing that anyone could get into an accident with that lil puddle on the floor.
Oh, and the fact that he was bringing it right after Beans got injured. (another one??)

A for Kelenna
For having blood on his behind for no apparent reason. lol
