"I would hurt the team if I jumped out there cold turkey and started playing," said Crawford, who hasn't played since last Sunday's loss to Phoenix. "This is the NBA. These are the best athletes in the world. You don't get to just walk out there rusty and play well. That's how you get embarrassed out there."

I could understand if this were a game, but PRACTICE? I mean really, we're talking about PRACTICE!

Honestly, this makes no sense at all. He sat out a few games (Clippers, Lakers, Sixers) and then decided to take a road trip off because he wanted to "practice more." What does that even mean? He came off injuries earlier this season and jumped right in, why not do that after he's completed his time in Nelly's Rest-a-Vet program.

Something's just not right - there's obvious turmoil between him and Don Nelson. That's been going on for months. But did we really just trade Al Harrington (player #1 that was forced to leave by Coach Nelson) for Jamal Crawford (player #2 that's BEING forced to leave by Coach Nelson)?

I dont' mind him not playing either but............

Jamal is being treated like garbage by the Warriors. It’s not fair for him. He’s kind of in a tough situation on this team as far as roster spot, but Nelson shouldn’t have tried to tell him to opt out. Nelson should have kept his mouth closed, and Jamal probably would not opt out, so that we can actually get something back for him. Instead, we’re left in two bad situations:

1. Crawford will opt out (most like now) and we won’t get anything in return or
2. Crawford will not opt out, but since he won’t play for the last 20 games for the Warriors, no one will be interested in him (moreso than before)

I disagree

Being told that you don’t fit the team and why is being honest.

If he opts out, we get cap space!

nellie didn't force AL to leave

al is a huge sack of garbage that was butt hurt he wasn’t playing more even though he sucked a$$. then he demanded a trade and faked being injured.

That's a pretty lame excuse from Crawford

What was he doing NOT practicing during the Clippers and Laker games?

Either Crawford is sitting out on his own, or his agent is telling Crawford to sit out. If Crawford is doing this on his own, he’s either pissed at Nellie, or he’s being the nice guy and not want to step over any rebuilding that may be happening. If Crawford’s agent is behind this, then the agent is obviously pissed at Nellie, and he’s trying to show his control over the situation.

In either case, I liked that Crawford is NOT playing. No more dribble-dribble-shoot-clang.

its all part of the plan....mwahaahahaha.

On a serious note, it looks like JC might be protesting against nelly for the things that he said about him in recent articles. I mean this is the nba, players are supposed to be ready ALL the time. Plus, during the season, teams hardly ever practice. Most practice(s) are done during training camp, so theres definitely more meaning to this than just “needing more practice.”

riddance. I don’t miss JC one bit.

can’t deny that he’s a class act and very respectful and friendly. Kinda shady how this franchise is treating him, he deserves MUCH better than what we’re giving him.

He is a class act..

The warriors are also stuck between a rock and a hard place regarding the guard positions. If they are being open to him behind closed doors saying that they’re not going to keep him, is it wrong that they are benching him to see what Monta can do at the point?

i’d much prefer the opt out, but i’d be much more okay with him pouting on the bench than actually playing on this team. he’s quite possibly our worst guard. he doesn’t deserve the time he gets when he’s out there, so i don’t know why he was getting much pt to begin with. if he doesn’t opt out, i’ll look forward to the “i told you so” moment.

Or come off the bench

maggs/jamal off the bench would be sweet

by mosdl on Mar 24, 2009 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like it that Crawrord is playin mind games with Nellie

Nellie treats his players like crap so anything they can do to reciprocate is great.
Jamal has the contract , Nellie is at his mercy. The worst that could come out of it for Jamal is a two year paid vacation with courtside seats thrown in. Sweet deal if you can get it, something like that might just draw me back into the labor force.

Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?
I noticed there's so many of them
and there's really not that many of us.

I find it funny too

Nelly would be an arse and just let him sit at the end of the bench for enternity. Crawford for Foyle! Do it do it!

Crawford isn’t happy with his benching, so now he’s choosing not to play. The Warriors are trying to push Crawford so he’ll opt-out, which would be good for the Warriors, but makes no sense for Crawford since he’s being paid so much and he probably won’t get nearly as much as a free agent. So we’re treating him like crap to try to get rid of him. Hopefully it works. Understandable that Crawford isn’t happy with how he’s being treated, but at the same time, it has to be done.

But did we really just trade Al Harrington (player #1 that was forced to leave by Coach Nelson) for Jamal Crawford (player #2 that's BEING forced to leave by Coach Nelson)?

Yes.

This is shaping up to be a Marbury-esque confrontation, and is the quintessential example of mismanaging the roster by Nelson. The Harrington trade stunk when it was made and now it’s a rotting corpse, spreading disease and pestilence across the land … Crawford needs a Moses to smite down the Egyptians, spread the waters, and deliver him to the holy land. In other words, he needs a buy-out.

JC deserves better treatment...

it’s understandable that Nellie wants to see his youngsters develop, but why does he feel the need to have the Vets sit out? Why can’t he just have them suit up and be ready to play, if needed? Because Nellie’s playin’ head games and acting as ‘manager’. I don’t blame JC for what he’s doing.

And I don’t get why you’re all whining about his game. Other than his lack of D, he’s still bringin’ in the pts (3rd) and is 2nd in assists for the Ws. Worst guard? Have you looked at Watson and Belinelli?

by spinn on Mar 23, 2009 6:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh Me Oh My

It’s the dog days of the season and there isn’t much to talk about and it seems people will say anything. I think because of the legacy of the Weber fiasco Nellie has a rougher time in GS than anywhere. Historically, he’s been a players’ coach, a coach players love to play for. Ask the twice MVP Steve Nash. There wasn’t a lot of this kind of thing in Dallas and I don’t think there is much evidence Nellie treats his players like crap.

I don’t know why it was the Ws acquired Crawford. Nellie said he was soft when he arrived. It is obvious the Ws can’t pay this guy to play alongside Monta and be one of the greatest defensive vanishing acts in history. So, I don’t know what’s going on and I am not sure anybody else does either. Everyone is just playing his Nellie feeling card on this one.

My guess is Nellie would have preferred to have Al, but Al wasn’t happy with Nellie. The Ws didn’t make the trade last year when they should have and Al called their bluff this year. I am guessing Crawford was the best they could do and his real upside was that he could opt out and that’s what he talked about when he arrived (He had always wanted to play on a championship team.) Personally, I think things will be a lot clearer when Mullin is gone and I expect the Ws to be much better next year. Though his concern hasn’t showed much in results, Nellie seems much more concerned with the defense than he ever was in Dallas. And Crawford didn’t want to touch anybody on defense. On offense, he could be great and then he could totally disappear. I just can’t see getting upset over this guy or, in retrospect, Al. Even with all his points, Mike D has called Al out as a selfish player. And neither of these guys is a real difference maker.

For all the people who are ok with Crawford sitting

To quote the great comedian Lewis Black, “Your stone-cold #$!@ nuts.”

News flash, Crawford is paid whether he plays 48 minutes every game or sits on the bench in a suit every game. It is not in our benefit to pay someone 20 million dollars to show up in church clothes every game.

While we can argue (rather successfully ill admit) that it is in our benefit for Crawford to opt out at the end of the season, Nellie and the Warriors front office are playing a really dangerous game right now with Crawford. If they try to isolate this guy, who quite honestly has done nothing but be a model player since coming here, they send the wrong message to the fans, to our players, and worse yet, potential future warriors prospects. If we are forced to trade him (and its looking like its heading that way) his value will only be further diminished to us if other teams KNOW he is disgruntled here and that we NEED to get rid of him because of it.

Bottom line, I think Nellie has overstepped his bounds here. Crawford isn’t a good fit alongside Monta. Crawford’s game is 80% of the time incredibly frustrating to watch, 20% brilliant. We all can envision this team being better in the long run with Crawford relieving us of his contract at the end of the season. But you dont give the Marbury treatment to players like Crawford, and we may be beginning to see the results of those actions.

by kyzah on Mar 23, 2009 7:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

the only jerk in this equation is

Jamal’s agent. If he was (likely) the source of the leak between Nellie and JC’s conversation about opt out or get traded.

Players always talk about people not talking to them, or lying to them. Nellie obviously had a candid heart to heart with Jamal. Showed him respect – and frankly is doing Jamal a favor.

By not suiting him up for games he’s keeping Jamal’s scoring average up so he’s more marketable as a free agent should JC opt out. If JC plays and loses minutes to Monta (a guarantee) his scoring average over 20 games could drop from 19ppg to 16ppg.

At 19ppg, he could get good $$$, at 16, mid-level exemption at best. Nellie IS treating Jamal well by doing this.

Does ANYBODY actually think JC deserves ANY of Monta’s playing time?!?!?!

that is the question

Who wanted him? Was it nellie, mullin or rowell?

by mosdl on Mar 24, 2009 10:34 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm guessing...

Some idiot said: Hey we’re 5-6. We’re doing OK. Al isn’t even playing, and our PG situation could use an upgrade, at least until Monta comes back next month. So if we can get rid of Al, who isn’t contributing anyways, and bring in somebody who can play a little point and keep us at around 0.500, we can make a run for the playoffs once Monta comes back. It’d also be nice if it’s not a long term contract.

Enter Jamal Crawford, who makes about as much as Al and was a player who could apparently handle the PG duties until Monta came back, then share PG/SG duties. In theory, that should have held down the fort. But Jamal plays no defense, he can’t really play point very well, Monta didn’t come back for an extra month longer than expected, Maggette’s hamstrings got worse, Jax got injured, and more importantly, the 5-6 was a mirage in the first place bolstered by wins against crappy teams and we immediately sank into a 9 game tailspin that killed any possibility of “making a run at the playoffs once Monta comes back”.

A normal 5-6 team missing a PG can add a half decent PG/SG and improve their team. The Warriors, however, were not a normal 5-6 team, and the FO failed to realize that. They were futilely running around plugging holes in their sinking ship, not realizing that the mast had been eaten away by termites left by the deserter (Baron) at the last dock.

nelson i blame you

don nelson should be able to mix in crawford and monta. besides monta played the two while baron was point and that worked out great. but for the fighting and controversy….WHY can’t we just get along?

We’re 20 games under .500 why is there so much drama? lets look forward to the damage that we can do next year and tune up our youngsters….whats wrong with that?

by melbo on Mar 24, 2009 10:40 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Because Baron was strong enough to guard the opponent's 2

That left Monta free to guard the opponent’s 1. With Monta + Crawford, there’s a defensive hole at the 2 that the opponent will exploit.

Let him rot on the bench

This guy stinks, I’m not saying he’s not a quality human being but from a basketball perspective this guy does nothing for me unless I wanted to watch someone get crossed over 3 or 4 times and then have a jumper shot on them. He doesn’t play a lick of defense, doesn’t rebound and is SUPER streaky. I personally would rather play jackson, morrow, bellinelli, or Kelenna over this chump.

If the only way that you can get rid of this guy is trying to force him to opt out that’s what you do. He’s a basketball player, he wants to play ball like all of us that play the game because we love it. I personally would take a pay cut to be in a better situation were I would be playing but that’s me. If he doesn’t help your team don’t play him. He’s not untradeable you would just have to get rid of one of those players that nobody wants to see go. I personally would package him with Belinelli and try to get a trade done if he doesn’t opt out. Although who would take that trade, I wouldn’t unless I was trading equal GARBAGE in return and we don’t need more trash. Let him sit on the bench in street clothes. I for one don’t care and actually appreciate seeing him not play, as I was extremly excited to see him not warming up when I went to 76ers game the other night. Good ridance, hopefully he mans up and opts out.

Haha, You don’t understand economics. With that 20 million Jamal can rent a gym and pay people to play ball with him if he gets the urge.

Actually

Being under contract I’m pretty sure he can’t do anything that would possibly get him injured and that includes playing ball outside of a Warriors sanctioned practice or game.
