Notice that all 5 of these guys are playoff bound? D-Fense.

I can't wait till GSoM friend Tim Kawakami drops his annual NBA All No-Defense Team. I'm expecting a lot of GSW love.

ehh....

over the past two seasons the warriors have been at the top of the league in steals. but otherwise i agree with you, there won’t be a lot of good news until we buckle down on d. i think when keith smart takes over the reigns for nelly (assumption) that our team will focus much more on defense. Besides good defense always leads to good offense.

Yawn

What exactly goes into these things?

It looks like they just plugged in their marketing machine and set it as:

Give me 5 guys who’re going to the playoffs, have decent defensive numbers, and who are stars. Give bonus points for being on this list in the past. Voila!

Here’s a little excerpt:

Often criticized for his penchant for overplaying the passing lanes and gambling for steals, CP3 defensive stats are unquestionably impressive. He is a tremendous rebounder for a PG, and of course he racks up steals at an alarming rate.

Summary: Well, he’s criticized for going after steals instead of playing solid defense, but hey, look! He gets a lot of steals! Isn’t that awesome!

For Howard they simply say “The numbers speak for themselves.” For LBJ, they say “The team is statistically the best, and he gets the most statistics on the team, so he must be good”… “Kobe can be great when he when he wants to because he’s so awesome”.

For Bowen, they say “Well he’s been really good in the past, but he’s fallen off and he’s not getting any PT [despite the fact that Manu has been injured all season], but people are still afraid of him.”

Crappy writing for a crappy marketing gimmick. Can’t we ask the players themselves? I’d be far more interested in hearing players say “So and so is so good at reading tendencies from film, every time I play against him, he’s always one step ahead of me.” or something of the like. Instead we’ve got to listen to some writer who doesn’t even care enough to write an article more in depth than “Hey, here are some stats, isn’t that awesome, oh, and by the way, this guy is in the MVP running as well, and that other guy has been injured.” A completely mailed in article about a completely mailed in award.

Can’t we ask the players themselves?

I agree that would be a good way to about it, especially when the quantitative measures of defense don’t tell the whole story (e.g. Raef Lafrentz was an amazing shot blocker earlier in his career, but he wasn’t an amazing defender).

For what it’s worth, I asked Baron Davis who was the toughest defender he had to go up against last season and he said LeBron James because he was huge and Ron Artest in the Pacific Division.

by Atma Brother ONE on Mar 24, 2009 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Baron Davis has far more credibility

Than some guy who’s named after that which gets me drunk at night.

I’ll buy that these guys are solid defenders. LBJ, Superman? Both superior physical specimens. They’re going to be good at whatever they do. Imagine D-Ho as the Niners’ defensive end. He’s so huge you’d even put him in the QBs face just so they can’t see anything. LBJ as a tight end? It’s not surprising that they’re good at defense, but you can do much, much better with an article…

Agreed

What a crappy article. This is all about spewing some useless information at you.

- How about telling me how many of Dwight’s blocks go out of bounds? And then how many of those the opponent scores on.
- Why do Chris Paul’s 3 consecutive games of 25pts, 5 assists, and 5 steals have anything to do with an award based on 82 games?
- And Bruce Bowen gets an honorable mention for being a top 4 finisher in DPOY the last 5 years? Uhhh what does that have to do with this year? If he’s playing less than 20 minutes per game, he can’t be a top defender anymore, can he?

Here’s my top 5 DPOY:
- Dwight Howard: because he’s superman
- LeBron James: because he’s the best defender on the best defensive team
- Shane Battier: because the NY times had a front page article about him
- Kevin Garnett: because he won it last year
- Chris Paul: because he had 8 steals in a game once

Here's GSoM's top 5 DPOY

Jax – Because he shut down Dirk in the playoffs… in 07
Turiaf – Because he blocks shots into the tenth row (who cares that the other team gets the ball back).
Kelenna – Because he shut down Kobe once
Belinelli – Because JVG said he was the best defender on the floor that time we played against Houston
Morrow – Because he played good defense against Kobe last week

Honorable mention:
Andris – Because he grabs lots of rebounds… he’s still way soft on the inside and picks up too many fouls.
Jamal Crawford – Because he’s such a nice guy and an awesome dude, even though he’s “out of practice”.

Heh

I like how the stars all sidestepped that question with “My dad”, or “some kid I played against in HS”, or “you just gotta believe in yourself”.

Agree, let the players call it

There are also plenty of guys who shut down offensive players without earning the fancy stats.

Heck, we have seen Morrow and Belli shut some excellent shooters down. They dont get any blocks or steals for the stat sheet, but do limit the other player’s points and get deflections which are a big deal.

I have a feeling LeBron and Superman would be at the top of the list, but the other top ten players chosen by the players themselves might be really interesting

by warriorsvictim on Mar 24, 2009 11:10 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

There should be a stat for that

Like for each game, a stat showing the average shooting % of the people the player defended.

So it could go – marco defened on kobe, limiting to 30%
marco defended gasol, limited to 90%

where's shane battier?

dwight howards impressive… but i’d go dwade or lebron over him

by tafkasam on Mar 24, 2009 11:35 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Shane isn't an all star

Thus, he doesn’t count. Plus, why bother marketing Shane Battier? He ain’t gonna sell jerseys.

how about stephen jackson for best transition defense

he gives teams 8-10 fast break points a game!

by tafkasam on Mar 24, 2009 11:37 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

nope!

He fouls them before they can score :)

That is the reason why sjax needs to play a max of 30 mins. His TOs get worse in the 4th due to tiredness

by mosdl on Mar 24, 2009 11:54 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is why we need a real playmaker

So SJax can go back to his role. Team’s best wing defender, sneaky second banana playmaker, and stone cold killer in crunch time.

i think lebron would fit nicely

monta, jack, lebron…. i think our peremeter defense would be much improved :-)

by tafkasam on Mar 24, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope Monta can be that playmaker

Then we need to groom Kelenna into a viable second banana defender and deadly 3pt shooter (i.e. what Air France was supposed to be), and we’re all set. Is it going to happen? Not a chance in that place opposite of heaven. But it’s fun to hope.

To be honest with you Atma

The Dubs got a lot of company, adn it should be an all Northern California edition. The Kings are WORSE than the Dubs are.
