Why not Nash in 09/10?
I've seen several (20-25) games of the Suns this year on League Pass and I think Nash easily has another 2 years left in the right situation.
What better situation than playing under the coach that loved him first and the coach that he first flourished under?
We all know that Nash (esp. at this point in his career) is not going to be accused of playing lock down defense but who are we going to get to play lock down defense in our system?
I believe Nash is a FA after this season (I could be wrong it could be the year after but I believe I am correct) but even if I am wrong and it is the year after we could possibly get him cheaply as the Suns will most likely be rebuilding when Shaq leaves for 1 more contract from a contender.
I know that the Nash/Ellis backcourt would be trouble defensively but I think we could get away with it at home from time to time and what better teammate/teacher could Monta Ellis have than Nash to help him mature into a great point guard leading our Dub's for years to come long after Nash rides off into the sunset.
On the other side of the coin....What better filler to have at the point could there be for a couple of years if Monta was needed to be put into a blockbuster in order to get a "big name", i.e. Bosh, player via a trade?
If Monta ended up leaving because of a major trade we would have Nash for a couple of years to teach a youngster (Brandon Jennings possibly?) how to run a professional basketball team.
He already knows all of Nellies systems and Nellie has admitted over the Dallas radio waves that Cuban not willing to pay Nash was what started Nellie/Cubans riff raff and eventually Nellies leaving.
We all know Nash isn't the B2B MVP anymore but I truly believe that surrounded with the right pieces (Randolph is going to be a star, Ellis?, Beans?, Bosh?, Jack, etc) he is still very capable of leading a team into the playoffs and would be a very exciting player that can still get our best scorers (Morrow/Jack/Maggs/Monta) easy baskets.
Thoughts?

this is
well thought out and all, and he might be good for a couple years, but i doubt we get him because i think we’re going to draft a pg this year (ty lawson hopefully), and if we do get bosh, i dont think we necessarily need nash, monta and nash i doubt would get along anyway, but IF we got him, i wouldn’t be angry, probably help us a lot, but i doubt it happens, good idea though

not just today….the whole tournament….actually the whole season. I was very down on Lawson coming into the year, but he’s impressed me a lot.

If we draft Lawson, it better not be with the #7 pick.

Who else is going to be better?
Griffen will be gone. As will Rubio. Name the rest of the players you’d rather have over Lawson and I’m sure you’ll come up with a lot of comparable talent.

He never really was a high lottery pick to begin with. He’s had a few good games in the tournament, but i’m not sold yet that he’s going to be a good player in the NBA. Could he be a Ray Felton type of PG? Sure he could, but is that type of PG a good fit for the Warriors? How can we play Lawson next to Monta when both have serious problems on defense. I’m not saying that I would NEVER draft the guy, just not with the 7th overall pick. If we traded down to 14 or so, then yes, I think that’s fair value for Lawson.
Depending on how the combine and pre-draft workouts go, i’m not sure that Lawson would even be the 2nd or 3rd best PG in the draft. I’m very high on Eric Maynor from VCU. I have him ranked slightly higher than Lawson right now. My list would probably go Rubio, Maynor, Lawson, Flynn, Calathes, Jennings, Holiday, Collison.

lawson
is even smaller than felton and I can’t see felton and monta being effective as a backcourt tandem.
lawson might end up being a decent backup point in the league. IMO, at best he could be a brevin knight type of player.

Lawson
Is also a much better / more efficient shooter than Felton.
Felton FG% at UNC
Freshman .398
Sophomore .420
Junior .455
Lawson FG% at UNC
Freshman .500
Sophomore .515
Junior .542
A Ray Felton Upgrade who shoots 10% better, both from the floor and three-point land, is a pretty legit NBA starter. (Felton did have better rebounding #s, but Lawson has had a much better A/TO ratio). I’m still negotiating with the Spanish government to finaigle Rubio to the Bay (hence my recent GSoM absence) but I suspect we could do a lot worse at #7 than to transform the Oracle into a “Lawson Station.”
p.s. you gotta love the irony of Keith “Mister” Jennings harping on Lawson’s stature… ;-)

At the height that they both are, I suspect that the difference in height between Lawson and Felton is pretty much meaningless. Neither are going to be bigger than their man and both are playing a ground game.
Lawson is lightning quick and has turned into a reasonably good shooter, though I suspect he’ll have some problems extending the range in the pros. Felton was also very quick and the two of them are both rather strong. They’re short, but can’t be pushed out of the way, Lawson perhaps more than Felton, though I thought Felton had somewhat better “point guard instincts” despite the assist numbers. That might just be my attachment to that championship team. I fully toss out any sense of objectivity with most Tar Heels.

Good call on Lawson, and also
Steve Nash is starting decline in his career, and is a terrible defender. You guys complain about how bad Jamal Crawford is at defense, Steve Nash may be worse.

I think Lawson is more NBA ready, his development of an outside shot this year (something that was a big weakness in his game previously) is encouraging.

1. We won’t have anywhere near the salary cap space to afford Steve Nash. This isn’t the MLB, our payroll is not unlimited.
2. Steve Kerr would not let him walk. Nash was the only player he put the “untouchable” tag on during this year’s trade deadline.
3. Steve Nash is not going to want to spend the last years of his career on a team that’s not contending for a championship.

if you were kidd
would you rather try to get a championship by signing cheap to Cleveland or another championship contender or would you come here?
by saintdee on Mar 30, 2009 1:06 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
depends on the money difference, but we’ll probably have about the same amount to offer him as a team like LA. However, NY has been a rumored destination for Kidd and I don’t see why he wouldn’t come back to the bay instead of going to play for the Knicks.

Id much rather have
Kidd next year to pair up with Monta, get it done Warriors, bring JKidd back to the town

I’d like to see it too, but he’s the kind of guy a lot of contenders will be lining up to offer their MLE to. And he’s quietly having another very very good year.

by sam23 on Mar 30, 2009 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
is that a joke
thats exactly what this team needs. kidd would provide some leadership and tutaladge for monta atthe point while playing at home in the perfect system. he auint going to get a championship with us but would be a nice ending to his career
by IndubitableBayAreaGM on Mar 30, 2009 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
kidd or nash? puhlease
Can you imagine them playing defense with Monta? We would have less D than we do now which would be a disaster
by warriorsvictim on Mar 30, 2009 11:14 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Actually I think Kidd is still an ok defender. When we saw him play against the Warriors he got numerous deflections. He’s always aware of what’s happening and although he’s a little less active, he can get the job done adequately. Which is still better than any of the Warrior guards this year.
Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

I'd agree with that...
He seems to make up for his age with experience. He seems to choose his spots well when going for steals and he keeps reasonably good position despite being a step slow against most guys.

by olympicmike on Mar 30, 2009 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree too, Kidd could very well be our best perimeter defender. Even if he slows down a little bit more, the argument that he makes our defense worse is extremely difficult to make.

by sam23 on Mar 30, 2009 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Nash is out of the question, but...
There is an extreme outside shot at Kidd. Jason is a Bay Area kid in a different way than Mr. Nash, and he has already alluded to taking less money to play for the right team (LBJ in Cleveland last week).
Nash is going to have some very enticing opportunities on the table, likely for more money (Portland and probably a few others) or a better situation (New York and a few others)
That said, I’d love to see both a veteran PG and a younger PG (either a drafted guy like Lawson or a flier on someone like Shaun Livingston) come into the fold for next season.

Livvy is playing in Tulsa
He’s in the D-League. Said in an interview last week that he’ll be 100% some time around the beginning of next season.
As I said last summer, I’d love to offer him a frontloaded 3 year deal with a base of around $1.3m. Enough to make it worth it for him and long enough to make it a good value for the W’s if he becomes the star he can be.
Plus, he’d be PERFECT with Monta since he can run an offense and Monta can guard the quick PG’s (while Shaun takes the bigger ones)

all i here is how Nash or Kidd
can help Monta mature, and help him get better at PG and all that is cool but didn’t we have a PG that was pretty good and had a big part in Monta’s career

Kidd >>> Nash
Nash is one of my favorite players ever, but JKidd may actually come here. I doubt Nash would leave PHX, but Kidd may come back to the bay. He can still play defense, and he would probably be our third or fourth best rebounder.

I just don't know.....
i just have a feeling that Ellis and Nash would not able to mesh
by Richboievans on Mar 30, 2009 5:53 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Kidd is the call
Homecoming – playing for Nellie – tons of scorers to pass to – a triple double waiting to happen every night.
Kidd plays D – Nash doesn’t.
W’s need a vet PG, not a rookie. Go ahead and draft the rookie, but back the truck up for JKidd (after JC opts out)
by joegiant on Mar 31, 2009 10:28 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
dude no
this warriors team is full of young talent being a team that is developing and working at being really good for a while. We do not need to pick up just the opposite. Honestly i think Monte Ellis will prove himself to be good at the point guard once he starts passing more.
