Polling GSoM: Are you going to miss Marcus Williams?

What's this?  Marcus Williams got waived today?

Marcus-williams_medium

Note to kids - you CAN sweat if you play 2 minutes in a game.

BUT HE WAS OUR BACKUP PG!!!

In the words of Darth Vader at the end of Star Wars Episode 3...

NooOOooOOOooOO!!!

Man, that was a short tenure with the Warriors.  I really hoped he'd be an integral part of our 3-headed point guard that was slated to make up for Monta's made up time.

Unfortunately, I was pretty spot on with my prediction back then

2008-2009 Prediction

Because Nellie isn't about this guy at all.  We gave up a conditional first round pick that only made the final cuts because of the money.  What does that say about Marcus?  This man was given a huge shot after Monta went down and couldn't beat out an undrafted player and a D-Leaguer.  Ugh...what a waste of another draft pick...

I highly doubt we'll see Marcus on the court for a long time.  Well, unless we're talking POB minutes.

Tally that on my correct predictions of the year!

Act_marcus_williams_medium

The time it took the snap this pic was the longest he held the ball all season.

Let's take a gander at Marcus's stats with the Warriors this season.

  • He played in a total of 9 games.
  • Averaged 6 minutes a game (That's gotta be inflated by blowouts, but I don't recall 6 blowout games)
  • He shot 24% from the field (Rob Kurz is at 36% - in yo face haters!)
  • 1.4 assists a game (not bad for someone that only played 6 minutes)
  • 1.7 points per game

Icky.  Eww..  Gross.  I don't really know what other way to explain that one.

At least we didn't have to give up much for him.  NO wait, we gave up a conditional first round draft pick. .I was pretty cool with that move seeing as though the Warriors draft pretty poorly in general, so it seemed like a win-win situation.  With Monta out, we needed a PG, Marcus wasn't so bad, and he could probably hold down the fort.

But Nellie didn't play him.  I have no idea who's fault that is, but I tend to side with Nellie on these kinds of things.  I blame Williams.

We knew we weren't going to use the guy, so we could have just waived him earlier in the season right?  Well, we could have used him for a package deal as trade bait.  Cool.  I'm down with that.

But what happens when we do finally get a trade offer involving him?

Sp_warrior4qtrgame34942kw_medium

WE DON'T PULL THE TRIGGER!

The Marcus Williams saga just feels so.....dirty.  It's like this guy just came over, stole a first round draft pick, and a bunch of money.

As I was discussing this hot topic with Atma Brother #1, he pointed out to me that Marcus Williams has a history of stealing.

2406264013_1bbf1c9cb4_medium

Poor guy.

Sorry to see you go but I barely knew you.  If you were the reason we would have had Baron back, I would have rushed to your house with flowers and candy.  Instead I only leave you with these departing words

PLEASE DON'T TAKE MY LAPTOP ON YOUR WAY OUT.

I NEED IT TO WRITE FOR GSoM.

Big ups to IQofaWarrior for the fanshot.

Jacking for Laptops

Laptop thief Williams rejoins UConn [AP]

He and teammate A.J. Price were arrested in August on larceny charges. They were accused of trying to sell laptops stolen from student dorm rooms. Two of the computers belonged to members of the UConn women’s team. Price received a similar probation from the courts, but is banished from the team all season.

I hate to bring up old stuff, but stealing from the ladies. Man the nerve!

by Atma Brother ONE on Mar 9, 2009 8:07 PM PDT reply actions

not just ladies, but his teammates. they were members of the uconn basketball program just like he was. that’s just cold.

Ouch

Watching his highlights on youtube during his time at the Nets raised my hopes for him. Crazy passes, shooting, and plays. No more front row seats for him!

At least...

He was a decent reporter. Oh, and a very good bench warmer!

Marcus Williams, we hardly knew ye

My only memories of him was him hitting a three at the end of a half, and the story about how he wouldn’t join the alley oop contest despite everyone pushing him to.

I think Marcus never had a shot....

sorry but you are telling me he is not better than CJ Watson or Demarcus Nelson at running the point. I do have some memories of him… becuase when he would get into games… for his four minutes. he would try to look for others. He actually could pass the ball better than anyone on our team. I think he would have protected the rock better than most. (Cough… SJAX) and I don’t believe he would huck up shots becuase we have enough of those. It seemed like he tried to be a facilitator which is something he should have been doing from the start. Point forward was not a good idea, and Crawford is a volume shooter and did not create for others at all.

by shooter1525 on Mar 9, 2009 8:16 PM PDT reply actions

I hardly think he was good, but should have had at least one start, or even just first off the bench

A lot of people say he must suck cause nelly wouldnt play him, But nelly didnt play AR either

by 123707THIZZ on Mar 9, 2009 8:22 PM PDT reply actions

but then he did play randolph. randolph played terribly at the start of the year, then he got better and got playing time. it’s not a conspiracy theory, it’s earning your minutes. of course, that’s out the window now that we’re in free for all tank mode. actually, with that in mind, what are we doing cutting williams? he’s got to be bad enough to cost us a game or two if we just stuck him out there for 40 minutes every now and then!

by cap'n hack on Mar 9, 2009 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

he wasn't a good enough scorer

In Nellie’s system, all 5 spots need to be able to make baskets. Nellie lost some credibility with me when he started Demarcus Nelson at the beginning of the season, but knowing Nellie it was probably mostly to try to piss of Williams and Watson. From what I understand, Williams was out of shape and had trouble playing in the up and down style that the dubs were accustomed to playing. He was a low percentage shooter from mid and long range (he had an ok year with the Nets from 3pt range in his limited minutes I believe). With the addition of Crawford and the emergence of Belinelli and Morrow, it became academic at that point for Williams.

by kyzah on Mar 9, 2009 8:27 PM PDT reply actions

Nellie's response about Marcus Williams

When asked what didn’t work with Williams, Nelson replied: “Everything.”

“It just wasn’t a good fit,” Nelson said. “I like him very much. It was a really tough situation and he was a model citizen. He worked hard and was a pleasure to be around. His style just wasn’t my style. He’s better in the half-court.”

by IQofaWarrior on Mar 9, 2009 8:29 PM PDT reply actions

mwill

He was always cheering and pointing stuff out to the other players even with him never playing. Good guy, too bad it didn’t work.

Couldn’t we have traded Nellie and kept Marcus then start playin the halfcourt game? or would that have made us the winners no one seems to want??

Did we

lose our 1st round pick this year or what? I’m not understanding the trade we made.

The Time Is Now! Win Warriors Win!

by ballin on Mar 9, 2009 8:56 PM PDT reply actions

Conditional first round pick.
The first round selection the Nets obtained from Golden State will either be lottery protected 1-14 in 2011, lottery protected 1-11 in 2012 or lottery protected 1-10 in 2013. If the Nets do not use any of these picks, the Nets will receive Golden State’s second round picks in 2013 and 2015.

for clearing that up. I didnt understand that conditional part.

Very much so with the ball handling skills

It’s just a shame he didn’t get a lot to showcase it. As far as actually playing the point guard roll, I was impressed with what I saw with the once-in-a-blue-moon minutes he got.

eff nelson

…for not playing williams. he could have really helped us out on the PG spot. he just never got a chance. i hope m-will comes back to oracle on whatever team hes with and has a career game just to shove it into nelsons face.

*sighhh

really? really? c’mon Warrriors. Of all the players you had to cut him?! I mean it makes total sense but at least give him the Detroit game as a nice send off (btw where was he, had he been sent home already by then?). It really ticked me off that I missed his only highlight as a Warrior, sinking a 3 right before the half, I did however see him in action once and I was sooo juiced that he was on the floor. Admit it, everytime he stepped on the floor you were rootin’ for him, even if just a little, to catch the attention of Nellie.

A couple weeks ago at the Portland game i got to sit baseline on the Warriors bench side. Probably the one of the highlights of my life. Not only because I was sittin friggen courtside but the fact that i got Marcus to give the “wassup nod” to me after screaming his name during a time out. I will never forget the expression on his face, priceless….-"a fan knows my name?!?!?! oh snap!…act cool…wassup nod "

peace dude. getting signed by a team thats goes deep in the playoffs and actually uses you….(i.e)
DJ Mbenga
Josh Powell
Sarunus Jasikavadlfk;jlkfgchus (<—-lol. this fool is killin it in Macabi i hear)
Adonal “StoneHands” Foyle
Anthony Roberson
it can go on….

Williams would be great in SA or Utah

Under Popovich or Sloan. Unfortunately, I heard Marcus Williams could beat everyone in wind sprints during practice and work harder than anyone else, yet Nelson wouldn’t play him.

This is just another case of Don being Don

Despite the situation, MWILL had the face of undying hope.

Haha…dude never looked depressed. He smiled occasionally and could even be seen giving tips to his team mates.

For sure, he joined the huddle more than monta did.

But yeah, could’ve used him for a trade….ahhh gotta love it.

So long, our version of marbury.

I really don't think the Warriors gave MWilliams much of a chance

to show what he’s got. He was like the black sheep of the team.

Kelenna is mine...;>

by girltothemax on Mar 10, 2009 8:18 PM PDT reply actions

i disagree with girltothemax

If he had played well during practice (i heard he put forth minimal effort) he would have been given a chance. he didn’t. but hey maybe we can just say he had too much pressure put on him having worn the #5 after BD… =/

Marcus Williams, I hope you read this…you will not be missed.
