The Warriors defy the bad economy, the half-hearted reportage , and terrible, terrible basketball and sellout all the time. Insanely they are the East Bay's toughest ticket.

-- Kibby Kleiman on Slap Hitter: Warriors dismal season ends. Thousands bummed [East Bay Express]

Insane? Absolutely.

Warriors From Afar

I didn’t see the Warriors live all season. I follow them from Chicago. But I didn’t miss more than 4 or 5 games, and I didn’t think they were a bad team to watch, particularly at home. They played hard much of the time and often managed to come back from dreadful loses. I have seen a lot of bad teams I wouldn’t watch for anything. The Ws weren’t one of them. What I find interesting is that after two years of winning basketball, fans on the boards seem to go back to the lament of years past as if it is some ancient ritual. My view is that in Nelson’s second go-around you just saw the only losing season. They have promising talent, and I think they will make some adjustments and come back strong. Nellie may never win the championship but he is not going to hang around to pile up loses. You can bank on that. It would be great to be able to put a superstar right down in the middle of great supporting talent. They probably won’t be able to do that, but they will win and I would bet on that. And because of that promise, I would have used my season-ticket if I were there.

Insane indeed

On a recent BS Report podcast with Marc Stein and Ric Bucher, Bucher basically said, “I don’t blame Don Nelson, Chris Mullen, or Robert Rowell for this situation. I blame the fans. They just keep on going to watch a bad team, so there’s no incentive to get better.” Either Stein or Simmons cuts in with “Yeah, but the Clippers still sell tickets too.” Bucher replies “Maybe, but they’re going to watch the other team. Warriors fans go to watch the Warriors.”

Is that good or bad for the franchise? Does it just show the depth of commitment the fanbase has, or is it legitimizing a bad front office? Would we be better served if we did what the Portland fans did in rejecting the whole Jail Blazer culture? Food for thought for the off season.
