Terry comes up big off bench to win Kia Sixth Man Award [NBA.com]
Congrats to the JET and the Mavs Moneyball community.

"Bimbo Coles, Duane Ferrell and the #10 pick (Jason Terry) for Mookie Blaylock and the #21 pick. Ugh."-- The Dirty Dozen - Part 2 of 3

GSW's Corey Maggette finished in 10th place with 2 2nd place votes and 1 3rd place vote. In a very difficult season props to him for assuming that role with class. Also props to Coach Don Nelson for selling him on the 6th man role, something that Mike Dunleavy Sr. could never do.

I dunno...

…I think you’re forgetting the veteran guile Mookie brought us.

Also, while Nelson may have smoothed over the 6th man role with Corey, that statement serves to suggest that Nelson’s unlocked some reservoir of goodwill and selflessness in Maggette, or at least that Maggette played his best basketball under Nelson. If you look at his career numbers, last season was more or less the same year he’s been putting up for most of the last decade, except his three point shooting (never great) dropped off th face of the planet. Has Nelson really been great for Maggette? Only if you’re going to give him credit for what Corey Maggette basically does every time he steps on the court…

Also, Dunleavy had Maggette off the bench last year for 65 of his 70 games, and the result was more or less the same statistical year he had with us, albeit he shot slightly better inside and much worse from outside this year. I just think it’s curious to consider- if he really disliked Dunleavy (which I understand is true), and Nelson really coached him up, then does coaching really matter to Corey Maggette, or is he just a statistical cipher you can plug into your team?

(By the by, per-36 Corey attempted a jaw-droppingly consistent 14.4 field goals per game each of his last two seasons.)

I dunno… think you’re forgetting the veteran guile Mookie brought us.

Haha especially on the golf course.

You’re exactly right about the numbers. I looked inside the numbers and really didn’t see a major difference (contrary to what people might believe) between Corey starting vs coming off the bench this year. The points, rebounds, and assists (or lack thereof) were virtually identical in about 6 less min per game. His FG% went up about 5%, his 3pt % doubled, so it was a much better bang for your Corey buck which was nice to see.

It was just refreshing to see Corey accept the 6th man role this season and Nellie finding a spot for him and selling him on it. There was next to no Maggette-Nellie drama about that this year. Maybe I’m just looking for silly silver linings in a disastrous WE SUCK campaign. You have to remember at the beginning of the season a lot of Warriors fans were acting like Raiders fans right now about selecting Darrius Heyward-Bey over Michael Crabtree.

Oh, yeah...

…I feel that. At the beginning of the year I expected Maggette to be a huge problem, but he ultimately just became a technical problem, a reasonably effective player with a swollen contract. Sort of like big company grade peanut butter; tastes alright, and always the same, but there’s always more calories than you might like.

I admit I’ve had a very love-hate relationship with football these last eight years, but my Niners upbringing couldn’t suppress a smile when i Heard what had happened. I hope you’re not a Raiders fan for your emotional sake, the discontent seems to be reaching the tipping point over there. Maybe the Oracle and the Coliseum are built atop burial grounds?

It's all good

We don’t even know if Jason Terry would pan out for us. For every player, the coaching situation would have to be right too. Even if we selected Kobe over Fuller, there’s no guarantee Kobe would have been the player he is today with us.
