TNT's Aldridge thinks BD should be back in the Bay
It would be good for the league if the Clippers trade Baron Davis back to the Warriors. Davis and Mike Dunleavy hate each other. It's not going to work. So send BD back to the bay for Jamal Crawford and Anthony Randolph, whom Nellie is trying to run off the reservation, anyway. The Warriors were one of the most exciting, surprising stories in recent years when they exploded in the '06 playoffs, and Davis was their catalyst. Their long-suffering, incredibly loyal fans deserve a break.
I wouldn't mind seeing Baron back in a Warriors uniform, but not that the expense of Randolph. I heard from a very credible source (which I obviously cannot say who or else they'd die) that they are shopping Belinelli pretty hard in the offseason. Knowing the Warriors' dumbass front office, they'd give up Randolph for BD. Crawford and Belinelli for BD...YES!
Yes, us long-suffering, incredibly loyal fans do deserve a break...We will never get it until Rowell is fired/killed.

then use our $9mil of capspace for free agent Lamar Odom
PG Baron / Ellis / Watson
SG Ellis / Jackson / Morrow
SF Jackson / Odom
PF Wright / Randolph
C Biedrins / Turiaf
Even if we got this year’s Baron, I just don’t see how that team wouldn’t make the playoffs in 09-10
"We Deserve"
If they wanted Maggette instead of Davis
They would have just extended him. And Odom is not coming here for $9M.

Yeah...
I think I’d do Maggette & Belinelli for Davis or Crawford & Belinelli for Davis. I would personally prefer the latter, that way we bring Maggette off the bench and have a starting line up of Davis, Ellis, Jackson, Randolph & Beans with a bench unit of Watson, Morrow, Maggette, Buike, Turiaf and Wright. That’s more than enough to at least make this team relevant for the next season or so….

The fact that it wasn't accepted should tell you something
Going from MWill (an expiring 1.2M) to Belinelli (a marginally useful, could potentially be useful someday in a long time, 2M player) is not going to make them change their mind. Now, if you were offering BWright, they might rethink things… but I suspect they’d still say no.

Rowell will never let that happen. He won’t let Baron backdoor Rowell and return to the Warriors with a bigger contract than the contract extension that Rowell originally rejected.

0 chance warriors would trade randolphj. Nellie hasnt tried to run him out of town…. whole league things randolph should play 40 mins cause he’s exciting. He is sloppy and needs to be disaplined for poor plays until he learns.
otherwise we got stromile swift w/ longer arms
Whoa
Maybe I’m a little biased, but Randolph is NO SWIFT. His passion and energy he brings every time he is on the court combined with his athletic ability is something you don’t find too often. If I’m not mistaken, Swift was a #2 pick. One of the worst ever in my opinion.
Call him a poor man’s Josh Smith maybe, but not Stromile Swift
i'm saying all he's raw
swift was raw. had all the tools, athletism etc. But never developed because was coached improperly. Raw players like randolph need a hard coach on them who pulls them when they make mistakes because then they’ll develop bad habits. Once a player develops bad habits its hard to change them.
We can't trade Randolph and he is by no means a starter in the NBA... yet
Nellie can make him a star but he’s still a year or two away. He’s young, sloppy and can’t play much defense. Yet he’s shown to have the swagger and determination that is imperative for a quality NBA player.
Oh yeah and BARON HAS ONE OF WORST CONTRACTS IN THE NBA. He’s old, injury prone and his knees are about to fall apart for good. That said if we can unload players like Maggs(must be part of the trade) and Crawford then the contracts could cancel out a bit and we could get SOME great ball from Baron. He blew it for us, but whatever let the man get paid.

are you joking? while Randolph does give up a lazy foul now and again, he is definitely one of our more dominant defenders.
by randolphforpresident on Apr 8, 2009 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions
he can defend the basket and is good on help D
but if u put him on a decent PF or SF he gets owned… Sf’s get buy him fast on the peremeter, and although hes long and alters some shots, good post players score on him. Its just gonna take him a little time. Quite frankly jack is a better post defender right now….
Thank you for actually watching him
He’s hit or miss. A huge block every once in a while doesn’t make up for more frequent overplays that lead to easy layups.
Again, he will be a good all around player but right now he plays high risk high reward. That’s why he has highlights but Nellie still limits his minutes.
by T-Money on Apr 9, 2009 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't totally disagree with you
but again, defensive rebounding is a huge part of playing defense, and Randolph is already loads better than Jack in that department. You may very well be right that Jack is a better man on man defender in the post right now though I think you may be underrating his ability to change shots a bit. A changed shot is often more valuable than a blocked shot.
Thing A
Josh Smith
Is a poor man’s Anthony Randolph.
On a per minute basis, AR has a better career FG% and FT%, scores more, grabs zillions more rebounds (11.9 to 8.0), blocks the same number of shots, and commits fewer turnovers than JSmooth.
And … he’s 19.
Thing 1
by Sleepy Freud on Apr 8, 2009 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions 5 recs
Well let's see
Randolph is a better player right now.
Randolph, at 19, has a much higher upside.
JSmooth is signed for the next four years for almost $50M. Randolph is signed for the same period for $11M.
Not really a tough decision.
Thing 1
Why would you say Randolph is a better player now?
Smith is one of the best defensive players in the game today and has a much better offensive skill set. Randolph obviously has a higher ceiling, but could also turn out like a Darius Miles.
On paper Randolph is better but I’m not so sure that 30 GM’S around the NBA wouldn’t pull the trigger on that trade so I wouldn’t be so sure that’s it’s not a tough decision.
anybody whom has seen randolphs determination can tell you that there is not way he ends up a darius miles
his determination and passion alone make me think he will atleast get close to his ceiling
"so much losers" - hiero
its dependant
josh smith is better now, i think randolph will be better long term. If warriors were a peice away from serious playoff run i’d do it. but thats generally how it works..
(Head explodes)
What about this wasn’t clear?

defender is misleading. Turiaf is our best defender. Jackson tries the hardest to guard the perimeter.
Turiaf is our best defender
also a bit misleading. Technically he plays better post defense than Biedrins, but as jae has pointed out numerous times, the team actually hold opponents to fewer points when Biedrins is in the game because Turiaf isn’t great on the boards. Defensive rebounding is a HUGE part of interior defense. I like Turiaf but he chases the blocked shot far too often and we have a tendency to drastically overrate blocked shots.
Thing A
if missing alot of shots and turning the ball over alot is amazing, then I myself am also pretty damn amazing

I went to a shoot around earlier this year and got to meet a couple players, got some autographs had a 5 minute conversation with Jim Barnette. But the best thing was before Jackson went into the locker room he shook my hand, gave me a hug and took a picture with me and signed my shirt. Jack just seemed like a cool dude who appreciates his fans

I like Jack in that he has the right mindset and intentions both on and off the court
but his execution on the court is sometimes stubborn and out of control. That makes him a bipolar, roller coaster of a player to root for. His good side tends to outweigh his bad. But it means that he cannot be the #1 player of a team. He needs good teammates around him that will make up for his bad side, or prevent him from getting to his bad side.
alot of his problem is doing too much....
healthy monta + other quality players lets jack play his game…. when monta and mags were out and jack was our best player he does waay too much.
he also makes a lot of shots
yeh, put the ball in most nba players hands for 40+ minutes a game and they are going to make some shots.
the key here is that he doesn’t score efficiently. I mean, how hard is it to tell yourself: I’m not going to take contested 3’s 5 seconds into the shot clock. I’m not going to call for the ball everytime at the high post, hold it for 10 seconds and then take a fadeaway jump shot. I’m not going to dribble into 5 defenders and try to make a spin move when I’ve proven time and again that I’m not a good enough ball handler to attempt plays like this.
Yes, Jackson is having a “career year” in terms of scoring and assists, but its pretty obvious to anybody who has been watching these games all year why that is: he has the ball in his hand on offense like 80-90% of the time. Although he is scoring well, keep in mind that he is averaging 40 minutes a game this year, taking 17 shots a game, and hitting only 41% of them. Add in the fact that he led the NBA in turnovers for most of the year (and he might still hold this honor) and it just overshadows his contributions.
by randolphforpresident on Apr 8, 2009 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions
He’s also quite possibly our best all around player. He has his (huge) flaws but its amusing how much we ignored them in ‘07 and how quick we are to blast him for them now. He’s the same player he’s always been. Sure he’s being asked to do a little too much and his extension was inexcusably awful, but I’m not quite sure why it seems so popular to defend Maggette and blast Jackson lately. At least Jackson has proven he can be a key contributor for a very very good team.
Thing A
He’s also quite possibly our best all around player.
Really? That’s putting an awful lot of stock in his ability as a defender. He’s certainly a good defender, better than any of our other wings by a mile, but I don’t know that his defense is good enough to make up for his mistake-prone offense and horrible rebounding. I’d call Jack our fourth-best player, maybe fifth if Randolph’s for real. And I say that as a big Jack fan.
Sure he’s being asked to do a little too much and his extension was inexcusably awful, but I’m not quite sure why it seems so popular to defend Maggette and blast Jackson lately.
The idea that Jack has been “asked to do a little too much” is a complicated one. I do think that Nellie put a lot of offensive weight on Jack’s shoulders at various times when other guys are out. I also think that Jack tried to be an offensive stud on many a night when we didn’t need him to. Jack’s task was a very tough one this year, but he made a lot of mistakes, not all of which can simply be attributed to the requirements of his task. Sometimes gunning and passing into double teams is a necessary evil, if your teammates can’t get anything going… but sometimes it’s just stupid.
I have defended Maggette and his contract to you and others of late, but I don’t consider myself a Jack-hater. I’m a fan of the guy. On the other hand…
At least Jackson has proven he can be a key contributor for a very very good team.
…this is the kind of pro-Jack argument, like “we started 0-6 because he was missing”, that I don’t really buy.
Yeah, Jack has a ring. He played a fairly large role for a championship team. That team won the title before he got there and it’s won the title twice since he left… that team has won championships with all sorts of guys in the non-Tim/Tony/Manu roles, most of whom have proved pretty replaceable. Do we really think the Spurs couldn’t win a title with Corey Maggette on their team? They certainly seem to think they could… they tried harder to sign Corey last year than they ever tried to keep Jack. Are the Spurs dumb, or is Corey Maggette a guy who could be a key contributor for a very very good team?
Take away Jack’s tenure with one of the twenty best players in NBA history, and his record looks a lot like Maggette’s: a lot of mediocre-to-downright-bad teams. The best non-Spurs team Jack ever played on was last year’s Warriors, and while he contributed a lot, I don’t think he was one of our three best players last year.
Maggette and Jack are both useful, flawed players. Both help their teams win to some degree… neither is good enough to brighten a team’s fortunes by himself. I think Maggette is the better player, but I do think they’re fairly close in value. Both good players. Monta and Biedrins are both definitely better.
Ok, Biedrins is probably our best all around player and Monta certainly has the potential to be a much better all around player, but while the difference between Jack’s D and that of Monta or Maggette is tough to gauge I’d say its roughly equal to the difference between Jack’s offensive flaws and the efficient scoring Monta and Maggette provide. When I said Jack has been asked to do too much I didn’t mean his tendency to throw up ill-advised shots (he’s done that for almost his entire career) I meant the significant increase in his turnovers this year which I feel is due to him being asked to be the primary creator on offense. I think Jack is actually a pretty good passer, something we don’t give him credit for because the turnover numbers jump out at us. He’s a good passer when it isn’t one of his primary duties. But Jack simply isn’t suited to be the primary ball-handler and creator, so yes I believe he’s been asked to do too much. He has certainly assumed too much responsibility on his own as well, but he simply has too large of a role in this offense…..don’t you think we might be a little MORE down on Maggette if he had been placed in the role of primary distributor and ball handler this year? Yes, Maggette has been very efficient, but the 6th man role/pure scorer role suits his abilities perfectly. Essentially he is a role player playing the role of a role player. This season Jack has been a role player playing the role of star player.
Take away Jack’s championship year and his teams are still much better. Wasn’t he a key contributor on two (I think, I’m not one for research :) ) Indiana teams that went pretty deep in the playoffs and one to the Eastern Conference Finals? That is far, far better than anything any Corey Maggette team has achieved. And its not as if Maggette has never had some talent around him. I’m not convinced thats entirely coincidence-I think Jack is a far better player relative to his ideal role than Maggette is relative to his ideal role (the one he is currently in)
Thing A
Take away Jack’s championship year and his teams are still much better. Wasn’t he a key contributor on two Indiana teams that went pretty deep in the playoffs and one to the Eastern Conference Finals?
No.
In 2003-04, the Pacers went 61-21 and made the Conference Finals. They were an excellent team. But Jack wasn’t there… he was “starring” for a Hawks team that went 28-54.
Jack joined the Pacers the next year, and the Auburn Hills brawl happened a couple of weeks into the season. That team went 44-38 and got a sixth seed. They did upset the Celtics in the first round, a series in which Jack played okay… they lost to the Pistons in the second, a series in which Jack played terribly. His playoff averages that year? 36.3 minutes, 16.1 points, .393 FG%, .317 3P%, 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.6 turnovers. That is not winning basketball.
In 2005-06, the Pacers went 41-41, earning another sixth seed. They lost to the Nets in the first round. Jack’s numbers in that series? 37.8 minutes, 13.3 points, .366 Fg%, .231 3P%, 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.5 turnovers. Jack was horrible. If you want to nominate a guy as the Pacers’ LVP for that series, Jack wouldn’t be a bad choice.
The year before Jack joined the Pacers, they were 40 games above .500. In the the two-and-a-half years Jack was on the Pacers, they finished a total of eight games above .500. They did make the playoffs both Aprils he was there, thanks to the softness of the East, but Jack played badly in the playoffs both years. This is an “achievement”?
Maggette’s history isn’t impressive, but it’s not far off Jack’s. The ‘06-’07 Clippers went .500 when Corey was in the lineup (all but six games). Maggette was hurt for most of ‘05-’06, the only year Maggette and Brand had a third good player to help them out in Cassell, but the team went 21-11 when Corey did play and they made the second round of the playoffs. Maggette was still banged-up in that postseason, playing only 24.3 minutes per contest, but he was spectacular, averaging 15.3 points on 10.2 shots and 7.3 rebounds in those 24 minutes. Stephen Jackson has never had a postseason as impressive as Maggette’s 2006.
The point isn’t that Maggette’s a proven winner… the point is that Jack isn’t much of one, either. The more you look at Jack’s “winner” credentials, the less you see.
Stephen Jackson has never had a postseason as impressive as Maggette’s 2006.
Dude was critical in shutting down Dirk Nowitzki in ‘07, man. Give a little credit, Baron was clearly the MVP of that series and Jack wasn’t especially great on the offensive end, but he gave the league MVP fits on the defensive end.
Thing A
by sam23 on Apr 9, 2009 10:08 AM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Definitely his best series ever… he was great. That was probably a better series than Maggette ever had. But Jack pretty much stunk up the gym against Utah, shooting an ungodly 25% from the field with a fair number of turnovers… nobody did more to lose us that series than Jack. And Maggette was actually a defensive force against Phoenix in ‘06, pulling down 13 and 15 defensive rebounds in consecutive games. Jack’s defense on Dirk was incredible, but I don’t see an argument for Jack’s twelve 2007 playoff games being better than Maggette’s twelve 2006 playoff games overall. And I don’t see much of an argument for seeing Jack as a more accomplished winner than Corey Maggette.
And I don’t see much of an argument for seeing Jack as a more accomplished winner than Corey Maggette.
Seriously? The guys are very close in terms of talent and we can debate their merits and flaws forever, but Maggette has only played on a couple teams that were ever above .500 (and for one of those he missed over half the year) Jack has been to the playoffs more times than he hasn’t and he still has a championship ring (and its not like a Jud Buechler ring) You can call it being in the right place at the right time if you want, but the fact remains that Jack just IS a much more accomplished winner.
Thing A
You can call it being in the right place at the right time if you want, but the fact remains that Jack just IS a much more accomplished winner.
We’re basically just quibbling with semantics at this point, but I regard the descriptions “accomplished winner” and “in the right place at the right time” (which I DO think is an accurate depiction of Jack’s record) are mutually exclusive. Yes, Jack has been on more winning teams, but unless he was a significant part of the reason why, I don’t think that proves much. The Spurs didn’t miss a beat when he left, the Hawks added him for big bucks and got worse, the Pacers got much worse when he arrived (not due to his play so much as other factors, but he certainly did nothing to stop the bleeding). We got a bit better when he showed up, but that had more to do with an inspired year-plus from Baron and the development of our young guys than Jack. He’s done a good job for us, but he wasn’t the engine behind our success, as this season should make more than clear.
The difference between their records is reflective of their teammates, not some virtue of Jack’s that Maggette is missing. Yes, the Clippers did have Brand, but beyond those two guys, their roster for most of the last ten years has been completely wretched, comically bad more often than not. You’d be hard-pressed to find a season in which Maggette’s surrounding team was as good as Jack’s.
To contend that Jack is an “accomplished winner” in a way that Maggette is not is to contend that B.J. Armstrong was an “accomplished winner” in a way that Tim Hardaway was not. True in some literal sense? Sure. But it doesn’t actually say anything meaningful about the merits of those players. You have to account for teammates, and when you do that, Jack doesn’t look like any more of a winner than Maggette.
that's retarded

Calling Turiaf our best defender is far more misleading.
He is the best in the sense that he’s our big man inside, everyone on the other team will have to think twice before driving. But Jackson always has the toughest defensive assignments. Kobe, Dirk, Dwade, TMac (when healthy). Without Jack, who would we put Maggette? Guarding these guys? Good god thay would be funny!

How exactly is Nellie trying to “run Randolph out of town?” By actually coaching him to play the right way rather than just letting him develop on his own? By rewarding him with increased minutes and ultimately starting him? The only thing worse than NBA officiating is NBA punditry.

I still wouldn’t do it. Baron’s huge contract is the most obvious problem, with the corollary problem of losing the possibility of trading Jamal’s expiring contract in 2011. We’ve got a nasty habit of kicking expiring contracts down the road into longer expiring contracts… at some point we should try to capitalize on one of those.
But I also don’t see the point in getting smaller. A Baron/Monta backcourt proved pretty damn bad defensively last year, and I doubt a more out-of-shape Baron would help that problem. Plus, if you commit to that as your backcourt, how do you find enough minutes for Jack, Maggette, Azubuike and Morrow? The obvious answer is “smallball”, but that’s been a losing strategy for us of late, and for obvious reasons — Biedrins, Randolph, Turiaf and Wright are productive players, and it doesn’t make sense to have fewer than two of them on the court very often.
This trade would hurt our defense, our salary situation, and our ability to give chances to some of our young guys. It’d help our playmaking a good bit, and that’s no small thing, but I don’t see it being worth it.

Do we have a better defensive backcourt option with Monta? Baron is one of the few PGs in the league strong enough to matchup with 2s most nights. Sure we could put Jack next to Monta but I’d definitely take Monta/Baron/Jack matched up on the 1-2-3 over Monta/Jack/Maggette. I don’t think this trade really makes us smaller or worse defensively…Baron is on the floor more but he plays bigger than most guys (guard or otherwise) currently on our roster.

Well first of all most of those guys are have been plagued by injuries so I doubt we’d have them all healthy for more than a couple dozen games. But ideally we could limit Baron’s minutes (roughly 34-36 per game) split minutes at the 3 between Jackson and Maggette and letting them pick up about a dozen minutes at the 4 (hey small ball is inevitable, limiting it to about a quarter of the game isn’t so bad) That allows for each of them to get about 30 minutes. If Monta gets 36-38 minutes split between PG and SG that leaves about 26 minutes per game for Morrow and Azubuike. Its not really THAT much of squeeze to get those guys all in. It still leaves 84 minutes at the 4/5 for Wright, Randolph, Turiaf, and Biedrins and thats with a totally healthy roster, which we aren’t likely to see with Maggette, Baron, and Jack moving into their 30s.
I’m still not sure I like this deal. Baron’s contract is awful and I’m with on the idea that at some point we need to stop swapping our bad contracts for longer bad contracts, but if we could get some sort of reassurance that Baron could be the kind of player he was before he left (no idea how that would be accomplished) I’d consider it.

With a motivated, peak Baron, Monta/Baron/Jack would be as good a defensive array as Monta/Jack/Maggette, maybe better. With this version of Baron, though, I don’t know. It takes a lot of effort and conditioning for Baron to defend 2s at all decently, neither of which he’s shown this year. I’m frankly not convinced Baron’s been a better defender than Maggette this season. And Maggette grabs about two more rebounds a game than Baron does, which is a meaningful difference for a weak team like ours.

…actually, yeah, that lays out okay. I’m with you.
I think the guy who’d lose out the most in a re-Baronned roster is actually Wright. The return of Baron would indeed mean a fair amount of smallball, and I’m guessing that’d take place whenever Randolph sat… it’d be Randolph-or-nobody at the 4. Wright might well be traded anyway, so I suppose that could work out fine.

Absolutely… if we could get that Baron back, I think it’d be worth it.
It just involves banking on a guy that’s hard to bank on. Baron had every reason to be motivated to excel in Clipperland this year — justifying his big contract, impressing his hometown, proving us wrong. Instead he showed up apathetic and out of shape. Maybe he would’ve been more motivated if Brand hadn’t left, but if his commitment is that easily shaken, do we really want to dance with him again? I mean, this team did just snub him ten months ago… if he was looking for a reason to mope, that’d be a pretty good one.
I’m by no means immune to the charms of Baron. He figures prominently in many of my favorite Dubs memories, and the idea of getting him back is pretty tantalizing. But I just don’t think the second dance would go as well as the first one. It seems like a strong possibility that he’ll never reach the same level again, now that he got his big contract.
David Aldridge
is retarded,I don’t think he knows how well AR has been playing lately. But I wouldn’t mind if it was Crawford and Belinelli.
I'm still hated but still rated second to none, i'm everything you want to be but have yet to become.
Not so sure BD will be back unless he wants to sign a performance related contract..
Check the info that came out of my meet with RR.
Randolph is not going anywhere!!!!!!!!!!
It's about heart, It's about fight, It's about being a Warrior!
Baron Davis for Randolph?
You gotta be kidding me? Who is this Aldridge guy? Is he really serious?
Kelenna is mine...;>
Life is too short, give everyone a smile or a hug.
I really never cared that baron was a little fat. That and the beard just add to his mystique.

I like
how he’s got Mike and Ike’s on his lap and Sour Patch Kids, Dots and something else (red vines?) on the table. At least he’s got great taste in candy.

Seriously. That looks like me when I go to the movies.
Thing 2
Bingo!
Where are the Nerds?
Hopefully they are just out of the frame or hiding under his MacBook. You need some Nerds to mix it up with all that chewy candy.

salary
only if the clippers can work a deal to buy out part of BD’s contract. Otherwise his contract is too heafty!
Ellis to the RIM!
Monta for the win?! YES!
I love BD... but contract isn't worth it
You know how I would love to see play for the Warriors? Jason Kidd for two years. Yes, I know he’s past his best years, but he still can play the game. We know he can pass, and he still plays defense. He would be the perfect complement alongside Monta. Monta plays off the ball and defends the opposing smaller guard, and Kidd runs the point and defends the bigger guard.
no thanks
BD’s days in the bay are over, he is never coming back, nor would i want to trade maggs, wright and marco for him. he’s old and he’s almost outta gas, when are people gonna give up on the BD back to the bay thing?
Nobody does trades
Quite like Warriors fans. Has there been 1 name this year coach and President of the team included not mentioned in a trade proposal here? lol
FIRE SALE! EVERYONE MUST GO!!!
