"It's sad, maybe, but Kobe will never be appreciated in a manner commensurate with his ability. He's in the process of turning himself into an antihero. (In many respects, he is similar to Alex Rodriguez, another tin-eared superstar.) Everything he does reeks of insecurity, which is a really weird trait for a guy who -- along with LeBron James -- is a once-a-decade basketball talent."

Really, a very on point take on Kobe, a supreme talent that has never and will never be OK with how the world sees him... unless he singlehandedly wins an NBA championship by averaging 60 a game in the finals or something "worthy" of his narcissistic image of himself.

I think the majority of the great players in history were cocky. Anywhere from basketball, baseball, and football. Michael Jordan was cocky, Barry Bonds was cocky, TO is cocky, and so on, and so on. So, how is Kobe any different? I may not like him (maybe, cause he plays for LA and I’m from the Bay), but you MUST respect his game. Just like you would with MJ, or Barry, or TO.

The article references Bonds
And this is where Kobe veers from the arrogant antihero routine perfected by someone such as Barry Bonds. Bonds didn’t care what you thought about him. He thrived off the anger he generated. But this preening, jaw-jutting, head-shaking character is what Kobe believes people want.

Bonds thrived on the anger he generated. Kobe just wants everybody to bow down to his greatness. He drives himself off of his insecurity. It’s unbecoming of anybody from any walk of life.

And also

Bonds was respected by his peers, I read a report that Kobe had a birthday party for his daughter and no one showed up, now this was several years ago after the rape charges but still, if he was well liked by his team mates they would have been there.

There's a party in my mind.
And I wish that I was there.

lets be realistic, kobe is a great player, but he still is not even close to mj...people speculate that kobe has the same skill set as mj

if not better…thats ridiculous…kobe has never been better than mj at any part of the game beyond possibly three point shooting…

i would even go as far to say that there have been several players in the past whom were just as good if not better than kobe, but for some reason kobe is automatically annointed the second best guard ever…

what makes kobe better than clyde drexler, dominique wilkins. or dr j, magic johnson

Kobe is not only cocky, but is extremely arrogant and conceded when it comes to others. Look at LeBron who is in the same position and see how he acts in comparison, its night and day. Lebron appreciates where he’s at and what he’s doing, whereas Kobe is so insecure that he doesn’t come off the same way. MJ was an arrogant ass until his later years as well. Barry Steroid Bond was not an all time great, rather a syringe using cheat who nobody outside of SF Giants fans liked. He’s the worst of all of them, you could just see that he was a jerk and he liked it. TO is another one of these wacko’s, he’s not an all time great either, his numbers are good, but every team he goes to wants him dead within 3 years. Screw Kobe and his personality, it will be better for the league when he is gone. i forgot to mention how many all time greats go to trial for rape?

Barry Steroid Bond was not an all time great, rather a syringe using cheat who nobody outside of SF Giants fans liked. He’s the worst of all of them, you could just see that he was a jerk and he liked it.

Barry won a few MVPs in Pittsburgh when he was playing with Bonilla before everybody started taking steriods. If you’re going to callout Barry, you’ve got to call out Clemens, A-Rod, Tejada, Sosa, McGuire, Petit, the entire 2004 Red Sox team, etc. Everybody in baseball was taking steriods in the 90s through early 2000’s.

Back in the 70s, they were all taking pills… people talk about “tarnishing the game” and whatever, but it’s been tarnished since way, way, way before Barry Bonds set foot in a batter’s box. One of the many reasons I hate baseball (chief being that it’s boring as heck to watch).

Bonds also happened to be a jerk who fed off of people hating him. It made him a better ball player. Kobe, on the other hand, responds to people thinking LeBron is good by throwing a tantrum, trying to get attention, and saying “Look at me! Shane Battier can’t stop me!”

Would Babe Ruth have gone on trial for rape back in the day? The culture was different back then. What Kobe did would have been likely just swept under the rug back in the 20s. You could beat your wife, your children, and your dog and people walking by would think they were getting what they deserved (“That stupid woman probably wanted to vote or something crazy like that.”). Babe Ruth was a hard drinker during prohibition and everyone knew it. That’s like if LeBron showed up to every game with red eyes, smelling of reefer, eating cheetoes. Think people would look the other way? Don’t get so high on your “all time greats”… they were just as bad personalities as the greats we’ve got now. We just have the internet and paparazzi, and the players make a lot more money, so there are more people who want a “piece of the pie.”

And by all accounts Bonds Didn’t start using until late in his career after Mac and Sosa’s run at the HR title.

I think people tend to put these superstar athletes on a pedestal and expect them to be perfect human beings, but in reality, nobody’s perfect. If there were no personalities in sports, it would be like playing a video game. I happen to enjoy all the different personalities that these athletes bring to their respective sports. Even though some may be arrogant or cocky.

nobody’s perfect.

Yep, and that’s why Kobe will not win by himself. He’ll constantly be out to prove to the world that he’s a great basketball player, not that his team is a great basketball team. His imperfection will always keep him from being a truly great team player or a great icon.

I dont care who you are, something like that will stick with you till the end.

THANK YOU.

I could care less about Kobe’s ability or whatever. Great player but c’mon. Dude raped somebody…. but I guess “everyone makes mistakes” and "everyone has “personality flaws.” I’m gonna steal some of Chris Rock’s material and say that If Kobe drove a bus, he wouldn’t even be Kobe. He’d be “Kobe the bus driving rapist.”

I feel that a players "greed" is a inversly related to a player's or team's success relative to their skill.

This may have plagued Kobe early in his career, but I don’t think that it will going forward.

It would be interesting to see if the difference between salaries of players with comparable PERs (no I don’t think it is perfect) shows a correlation between more even salaries across the roster for players on their second, third, or fourth contracts, and a more (or less) successful team.

To bad I’m no statistician.

Where is greed mentioned?

Let me know if I didn’t catch it, but the commentary here is on Kobe and his basketball successes/insecurities. I don’t recall money being discussed anywhere.

Sorry, maybe I should have clarified

that I’m not responding to any specific part of the article. When I said greed I should have said “the way in which compensation influences self worth and ultimately a player’s ego.” It’s the egos and the huge contracts tied to them that make it difficult to put superstars together. I guess I let that blur into my statistical tangent. My bad I should not have used the word greed. So hopefully (for Lakers fans) Kobe’s ego does not translate into a contractual burden that prevents his pairing with another top dog.

It will be interested to see how Kobe’s next contract will be structured.

Similarly will Lebron take the contract that offers the most money?

It's not about money with Kobe

It’s just about everybody praising him and calling him the best:

If LeBron gets $130M/6 seasons, Kobe will want $131M/6 seasons

If Kobe goes to a club with other famous people throwing money around, he wants to be the one who throws the most around (http://www.tmz.com/category/kobe-bryant/page/2/)

If people are talking about LeBron, Kobe wants them talking about him.

It’s not about money with Kobe. It’s about being the center of attention in a “Wow, isn’t Kobe so cool” or “Wow, isn’t Kobe the greatest” sort of way, which makes his every effort to be the center of attention appear to be fake, cloying, insincere, and desperate making him look like a petulant brat.

I repeat, it’s not about the money with Kobe. The money helps him do some things, but he measures his self worth by how much people talk about him, praise him, and worship the very ground he walks on.
