Pretty interesting idea for rankings. There are 3 Warriors on there-- Monta (#33), Randolph (#35) and Biedrins (#39)

offense to develop?

its just his type of offense. what if the lakers waited for shaqs 3 point shot to develop?monta above lopez an butler easily.the list shouldnt have older guys on this list like duncan, it should be 26 years or younger with the exception being kobe an parker an people like that.monta should be in mid 20’s then an ar should be low 30’s to late 20’s if you subtract some of these guys

ME8 for MVP

Lopez has a really good rookie year

for a 20 year old center. he could easily be a 20-10 guy in future harder to find than a monta type

biedrins?

NO. AR4 and ME8 yes

Ellis to the RIM!
Monta for the win?! YES!

in all honesty, factoring age, there aren’t 10 players in the NBA to build around. right now it’s Lebron and Howard. then it drops off to the next tier which features CP3 and maybe Wade (on the bubble b/c he is an injury candidate).

then there’s a HUGE drop off to the next tier of Roy and then DWill…

guys like Bosh, Melo and Gasol are not players to build around. they are preferably 2nd fiddles.

if you were to be generous, you could say Rose, Oden and Bynum have the potential to be centerpieces, but probably unlikely (and their ceilings are likely in the Roy/DWill range). maybe if you don’t care about defense you could throw in Al Jefferson and Kevin Durant.

this doesn’t mean you can’t build a team w/ great defense and 2 offensive stars to win the title, but in terms of building around ONE player there are very, very few of them.

i mean, i like Granger and Aldridge’s games, but if you build a team around either of them, you’re looking at a 25-35 win team. they’re 2nd or 3rd guys you add to a main cog.

btw, who the f wants to build a team around Marvin Williams?

There are 3 Spurs on the "Players to build around list"

Where did the spurs get this post season with those 3 players?

Why build a car with busted old pieces?

Chris Cohan and Robert Rowell? Oh no hide the children!

haha, true

in the description box for Tim Duncan it said, “Past his prime with creaky knees, the great Tim Duncan has seen his best days go by.” No offense, but why put Tim Duncan on this list if he is past his prime with weak knees? No disrespect to Tim, I know he’s won four championships but, knees don’t lie.

Funny everyone wants Boozer so bad yet, Monta, Rudolph and Beans are all

rated higher than him. Yet I bet half this board would give up 2 of the 3 for one Boozer.

My favorite comment
It’s been a great Celtics run without him, but without KG’s length and help D, LBJ is going wild next round.

Did KG get traded to Orlando after last night? I’m confused… LBJ will be going off, but I don’t see what KG has to do with it ;-).

this didn’t take age into account nearly enough. i mean if kobe is ahead of roy on the list of guys to build around, you’re just ranking current ability. kobe might be slightly better than roy today, but next year? i’d say there’s a fair shot that roy is better by the start of next season, not to mention the years down the road. there was a little too much assumption that some of the older vets were capable of carrying a team for more than a couple more years.

kobe might be slightly better than roy today

Roy’s younger, but Kobe’s “little bit better” is the most important “little bit” in basketball. It’s the difference between “a required double team” and unguardable.

kobe no longer has “unguardable” status. he can’t get to the rim the way he used to and it’s easier to force him to be a jump shooter. it’s still a weighty challenge, but if you pull it off and get kobe firing up jumpers, he goes into selfish kobe mode. he’s still a great player, but the gap between he and roy is smaller than you think.

Kobe no longer has

“Completely unguardable by any means” status, but I think that’s more due to the loss of Shaq. He’s not much better than Roy, but that little bit is important. Plus, Kobe has tons and tons of playoff experience, he can turn it on when he wants… Roy might be better than Kobe next year, but there’s a pretty healthy margin right now and those little differences at the top are what differentiates “serious contender” from “wannabe contender”. If you put Kobe on the Blazers, they beat Houston. If you put Roy on the Lakers, they probably still beat Houston. That’s a pretty significant difference when you’re looking at a championship. And Houston isn’t even the second best team in the West.

i wouldn’t directly disagree with anything you wrote there. the little bits do definitely make a much bigger difference when you are in the upper levels of players. i’m just saying that considering the age gap, if i were starting from scratch in some sort of giant all player nba draft, i’d take roy before kobe. roy’s getting better, kobe’s getting worse, and the gap is closing fast every year.
