Leon Powe?
Powe is an unresticted FA at the end of this year. He recently had microfracture surgery on his left knee and from most reports the tentative timetable for his return is the middle of next year. With the emergence of "Big Baby" Davis and Kendrick Perkins this offseason it seems doubtful Boston will make re-signing Powe a priority. Already a fan favorite around here from his Cal days/role in beating the Lakers las year, it seems that bringing Powe back to the Bay Area would be an incredibly popular move. My guess is we'd have to overpay slightly to outbid the Celtics, but considering his injury status he certainly isn't going to be out of our price range this summer. Yahoo! sports has suggested it may be difficult of Powe to even find a contract until he comes back. While he come with more than his share of injury concerns, he's proven he can bounce back from serious injuries and still be an effective player. I think he could provide a nice "change of pace" forward off the bench behind Randolph. Most importantly, acquiring a guy like Powe would make Wright a whole lot easier to trade this offseason.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I know its been suggested a whole lot before, but it seems a whole lot more realistic now with Davis playing so well and his injury status up in the air.

I had been saying this too. I think he would be a good fit, as a player who wouldn’t exactly demand the most minutes but would make an impact while on the floor.
I heard yesterday tho, that he’s likely out w/ re-hab 1/2 of next season. Doesn’t seem like that great an option anymore.
by bonbrillio on May 18, 2009 7:24 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
why not?
we probably didn’t have much of a realistic chance at him before without actually “overpaying” by quite a bit. I’d take a chance on him with a 2 or 3 year deal while everyone else waits for him to rehab.

You'd overpay and take a chance?
On a guy who is going through his THRID MAJOR knee injury in his career.
I’m guessing you were OK with all the other Overpaid players we signed in the last few years (Murphy, Dunleavy, JRich, Maggette, DFish, Foyle…)
The point is that you don’t know how healthy he will be. Period.
by bonbrillio on May 18, 2009 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Overpaying for Powe at 3 years / $8m is not even close to the same thing as the Murphy, Dunleavy, JRich, Maggette, Derek Fisher, OR Foyle contracts. Not even in the same ballpark.
The smallest of those deals was Fisher’s, at 6 years / $37m. This hypothetical Powe deal would be only half as long and cost less than a quarter of that deal.
by markdash on May 18, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
“overpaying” implies that we wouldn’t be actually overpaying him. the use of quotes seems to say that no matter what, signing powe will be a bargain because of those 3 major knee injuries. this isn’t a signing anywhere near the magnitude of the ones you mentioned. my guess is powe could be had for about $2M per over a couple years. if he comes back healthy sometime next year, that’s a steal.

Big baby could walk in and possibly be our 2nd or 3rd best defender. and i dont even think hes a great defender, but boston taught him to commit to defense. He moves laterally better than u think, and lets be honest. NO power forward is backing him down like wright and randolph lol and its take the whole shotclock to get around him.

if big baby were playing football
he’d be the highest paid OT, at 6’9 300 lbs, quik feet.
if were to enter the NFL draft right now, even without any football experience(which i’m pretty sure he does), he’d go top ten.

with no football experience he is NOT going in the top 10…I’m sure some team might give him a workout and size and quick feet are a great start for a lineman….but there’s an awful lot of technique involved too. It would basically be the equivalent of Usain Bolt playing wideout. Sure, I bet more than one NFL team would take a look at him if he expressed interest but the only way he goes in the top 10 is if the Raiders have another top 10 pick.

people dont realize how skilled and athletic he is. His biggest weakness is his length and hieght, not his fatness. He moves around the court well, and defensively is hard to move off his spot. Has suprisingly good quickness.

Powe is on major knee injury number 3. He was a productive player, but a minor part on a good team, not something that will be the difference between the Warriors being a player in the playoff race or being an alsoran. Going to the bank for an injured, bench player seems like a tactical error in cap management. If we are worrying about how to find a replacement for Wright, our priorities are way out of order. If we have to ‘overpay’ even slightly for a guy with injury history to get him to come here to be a backup, something is terribly, terribly wrong. Bargain hunting for backups is a good idea. Overspending, even slightly, for what is probably damaged goods, is not.
by jae on May 18, 2009 1:14 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
but
when I said overpay, I meant simply offer more than the Celtics likely would. “Overpay” was a bad word choice. His injury status brings his price tag down significantly making him a potential bargain. If not for the injury I doubt I’d be in favor of outbidding the Celtics, because I think they would’ve made him a much bigger priority than retaining Davis. I think taking fairly low risk chance (3 yrs at 2.5 mil per?) even if it is on a guy with a major injury history is exactly the sort of bargain hunting we should be doing. Acquiring a potentially very useful backup big who is only 24 for much less than MLE money can’t be that bad of idea, right? Obviously it depends on what the market determines his value to be, but if the guy really can’t even find a contract offer this summer I think he’s the kind of guy we should be all over.

big baby is much more valuable to the celtics than powe is
maybe not last year, but after what davis did in the play-offs, he’s much more valuable than powe. boston would not have been nearly as good as they were without big baby davis. powe would not have been able to keep the celtics afloat like big baby did.

100% because of injury
its an o brainer. big baby showed alot in playoffs. Powe wont play till EARLIEST january? And thats a generous estimate.
BTW how much do we think big baby will get? I dont think boston will match an mle offer on him…. will theY? Without him they are already in luxury tax an they have rondo to pay next off season. They already have perkins, kg and scalabrane under contract. If they think kg will be back, and some1 offers big baby big money, they might look elsewhere

i wouldnt mind offering him an MLE
its the years really…. 2 years 12 mil? Why not. He’s only 23 and improving daily. Could help the 4 rotation. But its when you give a guy 4 or 5 years theres a problem.

tell me which of these you disagree with
1) this team needs to improve dramatically
2) we don’t have the money to improve via free agency, meaning the most likely avenue for improvement is via trade
3) we have very few valuable assets that can be used in a trade to really improve the team
4) of those valuable assets Wright and Randolph are the most duplicative
5) most agree that Randolph is more valuable to us than Wright
I’m not saying we HAVE to trade Wright, but trading him seems to be the most logical way to improve the team
