Draft Lottery
The NBA Draft Lottery is coming up this Tuesday at 5:30PMPDT on ESPN before the Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals between the Nuggets and Lakers and I'm just wondering what pick you guys think the Warriors are going to "receive" and what player that'll lead to them getting on Draft Day. I'm thinking that the Warriors get screwed and either not move up from their projected 7th slot or slip down. I think it's unfair how the NBA doesn't show themselves when they do the lottery balls and see which teams get which pick. They do it behind the scenes and then tell you. Can't they just give the #1 pick to any team in the lottery that they want? The NBA might want to even screw the Warriors too just like how they don't get any foul calls during games. This system doesn't receive my trust at all. Hope the Warriors get the pick that they need.

i am thinking 7th or 8th
pick. We are always extremely unlucky. If by chance we do get a pick it’ll be the 3rd pick so we miss out on Rubio and Griffin.
7th or 8th would not be extremelz unlucz. It would be the most likelz scenario given the odds.
Third would be the worst. No good has ever come of us picking third. That pick is cursed.
we get screwed
because why does the nba need to help out a franchise that still rakes in the green with nothing to show for it on the court, when they can help another franchise in a more dire economic situation by giving them a top 3 pick. you’re exactly right, they pick numbers behind closed doors, cuz they don’t actually draw numbers.
if we all were to boycott the warriors next season enough to significantly impact the revenue of the team and the league, WHILE performing horribly in the regular season, i’d bet we get a top 3 pick during the next draft.
is there a way we can gamble against the warriors getting a lottery pick? i wanna make some guaranteed cash.

Exactly
And Cleveland with Lebron James. I think the Cavs had the worst record that year, but I noticed in all other almost other seasons, the worst record rarely won the lottery. It’s fixed
Someone has to get the top pick. Improbable things happen from time to time without the need for it to be conspiracy.
.
+1
The likelihood of any one team getting the top pick is pretty small. Indeed, the likelihood of any event happening, when there are so many other events that could happen, is pretty small. It’s a wonder stuff happens at all. Such is the wonder of reality.
Thing is, when you’re
1. Deeply paranoid
2. Morbidly self-absorbed
and
3. Not very bright
It’s only natural to interpret the randomness of the real world as something more sinister than randomness. It’s moronic and juvenile, but there is a bit more comfort in the idea that the universe is conspiring against you — and your hoops team — than in the harsh reality that the universe could give a rat’s ass about you.

the draft lottery
From an article I read before somewhere, the lottery isn’t done totally in private. If I remember correctly, representatives from every franchise plus the media are allowed in the lottery room, but it’s kept private from the public.
"We Deserve"
correct.
There are two representatives going to Secaucus i believe. The lottery is actually held hours before it is televised in a secret room where each team has a representative. The representatives you see on TV though still don’t know the outcome, i believe.
Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.
The Warriors will get lucky and move up!...
And then fate’s cruel sense of humor will once again strike our beloved franchise and leave us with the 3rd overall pick.
But seriously…It’s about time we move up in a dang draft! the last 11 years we’ve either stayed in our slot or moved down. I think we’re due.
Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.
It's true
If we move up, it’ll be to #3, and we’ll somehow end up drafting Dunleavy again. The basketball gods wouldn’t have it any other way.
11th pick....we trade away Jamal Crawford for the 30th pick and get Tyler Hansbrough

i know a lot of people want to get rid of crawford
but i can’t tell if you’re kidding or not… hansbrough, really?? he’s basically troy murphy with a little more passion.
and a touch of Kurz in that he's "polished"

win!
2 white player to white player comparisons back to back. Obviously those are dead on and are certain to be incredibly accurate, because….you know, he’s white.
Thing A
Well
“2 white player to white player comparisons back to back”
They are the only two comparisons so it is hard to see how they could not be back to back.
The Kurz comparison comes more from the talking points that were used when he was drafted. Though TH is in a much better position than Kurz ever was in the draft the same criticisms apply.
If the Warriors drafted Hansbrough they would most certainly use the same “Polished player” justifications in their talking points.
But it IS so much easier to say the comparison is based solely on the color of their skin.
I don’t think that the Warriors invited him to camp with any serious interest. Rather they know enough about him to know that he will provide good matchups in a workout.
I almost compared him to Richard Hendrix (post d-league breakout) but didn’t think anyone would see the similarity. Maybe I should have since I didn’t know that the color police would be on the prowl.

well then
tell me specifically how Psycho-T and Murphy are similar. Maybe Hansbrough projects to be an effective rebounder like Murphy, but thats about where the comparisons end for me. Its not the “color police” I’m just calling you out on basing your player comparisons on appearance. Its the same thing as the Randolph-Prince comparisons. Those guys exhibited very different games in college, but people see an incredibly skinny and lanky 6’10ish forward and immediately start comparing him to players who look similar. The same thing happens to foreign players. In fact, the same thing happens to players of every race, size and shape, but its so much more noticeable (and amusing) when its a white player because the pool of players they are immediately compared to is so much smaller resulting in even less accurate and more bizarre comparisons……like Rob Kurz or Troy Murphy and Tyler Hansbrough. Would you compare Hendrix to Troy Murphy?
Thing A
I didn't say he was similar to murphy.....
freun989 did. I simply chose not to disagree and added my own little remark.
“I’m just calling you out on basing your player comparisons on appearance.”
So you are the color hall monitor and not the color police?
I don’t think it is necessary to read into it as much as you have. Especially when I’ve provided the reasoning behind my comparison. Besides what part of my comparison is based on their appearance. Both players had 4 years in college which is the direct connotation when using the term “polished”. Also, “Polished” was put in quotations because it’s not necessarily my sentiment. Rather the one I would expect from the team IF they drafted him.
Racial arguments on the intranetz are just plain stupid. Take it to ESPN or TNT.
At least save it for someone who’s genuinely expressing their own sentiment in a manner that is malicious. But whatever, it’s your time.
Chris Cohan and Robert Rowell? Oh no hide the children!
by Nuck Chorris on May 18, 2009 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions
I never suggested you meant anything malicious by it, I’m just suggesting that basing player comparisons on appearance is a common pitfall and I think you fell into it with the Hansbrough/Kurz comparisons. I don’t know that someone would/has described either player as polished. Again I don’t see where you made any other comparisons between the way those two play. You suggested that Hansbrough was similar to Murphy with a touch of Kurz. I’m still waiting for you to justify that by explaining how they are similar outside of being big white forwards who stayed in school. Marcus Camby and Patrick O’Bryant are of similar size and both left school a year or two early…..but most would scoff at a comparison between the two. How is what you did any different?
Thing A
I didn't say you suggested that. I said save it for someone who is being malicious.
Again, take it to ESPN.
So maybe I shouldn’t have said AND a touch of kurz rather “He has”
“I don’t see where you made any other comparisons between the way those two play.”
I didn’t make any comparisons about the way they look either. So don’t read into it.
Kurz:Hansborough similar body types…. low post bangers, set good screens, 4 years of school, TH would be more successful than kurz but brings pretty much the same thing to the table.
Camby:POB Successful NBA player vs. Permanent scrub, not similar body types, POB has questionable work ethic
That’s how it’s different.
“I’m still waiting for you to justify that by explaining how they are similar outside of being big white forwards who stayed in school”
Well that was my only comparison so don’t hold your breath.
The difference between me and you is that when I made my comparison it was at least partially in jest. You took one (very small) component (that didn’t even factor in) and ran who knows where with it.
I’m done here.

with a little more passion.
Hansbrough made his living scoring inside. Murphy has not. Honestly the stretches people will go through to find another white guy to compare Hansbrough to are rather embarassing. 99% of them indicate that they have not actually watched TH play. Will he be a good player? Dunno. But he is ver different from Murphy. That comparison is almost as weak as the ‘Mark Madsen’ idiocy that usually gets spouted.
if he turned out to be troy murphy with a bit more passion, you’d be crazy to pass on him at the 30th spot in the draft. he might be an “empty stats” guy, but it doesn’t change the fact that he rebounds and scores pretty well. at the 30th pick in a draft as weak as this, i’d jump for joy if we got a more passionate troy murphy. two problems, though. the comparison doesn’t really make much sense and we don’t have the 30th pick in the draft, nor are we likely to trade jamal crawford for it.
heart of a champion, will of the warrior.
do you think he’ll be able to get those shots off inside in the nba? He isnt super strong or athletic like the undersized 4’s in the nba who succeed. Nor does he have a jumper to open it up.
I personally think the kid cares alot, and works hard and will eventually develop a 12-15 footer or some other tools to make him stick in the league, but at best a bench rotation guy
I'm glad somebody else sees it the way i do
I think the nba lottery is bogus too. Since we don’t see it, I don’t believe it either.
nah
not bogus… why woudl the league of seattle kevin durant?
Yao Ming to Houston rather than a city with a large Asian population? Tim Duncan and Lebron to small market San Antonio and Cleveland?
The ‘fixed lottery’ does not hold up to scrutiny.
they were given to save and help out those small market teams...
it’s fixed. even with representitives from each team present.. it’s gotta be fixed..

Are both owed big time by Stern for pushing through the Gasol trade and the KG trade.
One of them wins. Sucks to be a Kings fan.

No lie, yesterday i played it twice. First result-2nd pick, Ricky Rubio. Second try-1st pick, Blake Griffin.
I think i’m not going to play it again and hopefully we’ll take this event as a sign for good things to come.

If you want to claim the lottery is fixed:
You have to tell me what the results are going to be, and what the logic of those results is, BEFORE the pick happens.
Otherwise you get twisted backwards-rationalization. When a star goes to a big market, it’s “to help market the league” and when they go to a small one, it’s “to help small-market teams.”
The Duncan-to-San-Antonio “to help small market teams” is a great example of the absudity of that. SA wasn’t a floudering franchise. They didn’t need “help.” Robinson had been hurt the pervious year, and they only won 20 games, but they had made the playoffs the previous 7 years, including trips to the conference finals. There is no reasonable conspiracy theory which justifies Duncan to San Antonio.
Humans are notoriously bad at understanding randomness well. This makes sense – our ability to pick up on patterns was crucial to the development of language. Truly random behavior is not equal to everyone – there are clumps and clusters, as well as sparse areas. Stuff like Orlando getting two top picks right on top of each other – you would EXPET to see events like than in a random event.
So I propose a rule: you can’t claim “conspiracy” unless you can explain the conspiracy in advance.
(That being said, if you want to claim conspiracy in the NBA, why would you talk about the lottery when you could talk about the officiating? I’m just about convinced that Bill SImmons is right: when the NBA wants a certain result, they put in refs who can’t stand up to a home crowd. I think it was game 6 of the Lakers-Portland series in 2000, where the officiating was so bad, and so obviously biased, that I actually stopped watching the league for a year or two).
I will predict that either the Grizzlies or the T-Wolves win the pick.
Both are owed by Stern. Both teams were involved in big trades that helped cement the playoff matchup of old rivals. The Celtics and the Lakers both get notoriously good whistle, and that undoubtedly helped them get to the finals.
Meanwhile the other two teams (Grizz and T-Wolves) were left ruined by these trades. It is important to note that Stern was instrumental in the execution of both trades.
I predict that either the Grizzlies or the T-Wolves will win the lottery, and that will depend on which market stern thinks is more valuable 5 years from now.

You may be wrong...
but thins makes for interesting reading. If one of those teams get the pick I’ll probably take a second to go “Hmmm…”
Thing 2
One conspiracy theory down
The Grizz moved up … to the #2 pick. (Sorry, you said that one of them would get the pick – not that one of them would get one of the top two picks … which was more than twice as likely).
Meanwhile, the Wolves moved down. If the Grizz moving up to #2 is supposed to get you partial credit on your conspiracy call, then the Wolves moving down have to cost you points, as well.
These darn conspiracy theories are a lot harder to call in advance than after the fact, aren’t they? :)
Interesting
Those two teams have a combined 15% chance of getting the top pick. Unlikely but not unreasonable. That being said, if it happens, it’s unlikely enough that you have a somewhat reasonable piece of evidence (although far from proof) of a conspiracy.
The warriors super bowl for 14 of the last 15 years!!!

Are we not the team that gave away Vince Carter and Hardaway with our no.1 pick
by Only In Fairfax on May 18, 2009 5:20 PM PDT reply actions
.....
If my memory serves me right, the Warriors and Raptors struk a deal before Toronto drafted Antawn Jamison at number 4 and sent him to the dubs for Vince Carter (who the Warriors picked for Toronto at number 5) and cash considerations. This was a deal where the Warriors really wanted Antawn and were paranoid that the Raptors were going to take him one slot ahead of them.
The other one, Hardaway, I’m assuming you are talking about Anfernee not Tim, right? The Warriors drafted Penny at number 3 and traded him with 3 future first round picks to Orlando who had taken C-webb at number 1. The Magic had just drafted Shaq two years earlier and were in need of a guard. I don’t mind this trade at even though the whole Nelly/C-webb feud buried our franchise for a decade and counting.

I go to U of Oregon, so a few years back, Portland was outta the picture and snuck in. I’ve been thinking a lot lately we are one player or big move from being fully legit. And can see us up there in the mix. We have been shafted for so many years. We are very similar to the Blazers of the Oden lottery year. Similar situation…so I’m saying #1. Unfortunately there is not a clear cut #1 this year, so maybe it’s just a continuation of the L screwing us. Realistically, anything but 1 and below 7 would be awsome.
