2009 NBA Draft Lottery Results + With the 7th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft the Golden State Warriors select...
The Warriors really could've used this guide over the years.
via www.nbamate.com
Jump for the results of today's 2009 NBA Draft Lottery and a draft kit.
2009 NBA Draft Lottery
- LA Clippers [Clips Nation]: Warriors South came up BIG.
- Memphis Grizzlies: Say goodbye to Mike Conley and hello to Ricky Rubio.
- OKC Thunder [Welcome to Loud City]: Can they spell Hasheem in Oklahoma?
- Sacramento Kings [Sactown Royalty]: This was the lowest Sacrapmento could possibly fall in the lottery. CWebb should've called a timeout. :-(
- Washington Wizards [Bullets Forever]: So much for Gilbert Arenas getting his TIm Duncan.
- Minnesota Timberwolves [Canis Hoops]: At least Kevin McHale can't mess up their draft picks anymore. What's with the zombie bear though?
- Golden State Warriors: The Warriors lost the lottery, but that's okay. They'll have plenty of chances to redeem themselves over the course of the next decade.
- New York Knicks [Posting and Toasting]: Donnie Walsh has already called LeBron James and asked him who he wants to play with in 2010.
- Toronto Raptors: Say hello to the #9 pick and goodbye to Chris Bosh.
- Milwaukee Bucks [Brew Hoop]: This isn't a very heralded draft, but I'm sure they can do better than Joe Alexander this time around.
- New Jersey Nets: Don't be surprised if Rod Thorn plucks a major find here.
- Charlotte Bobcats [Rufus on Fire]: Larry Brown and company need someone who can score more than 16.7ppg. I don't think they can find someone at this spot who can do that.
- Indiana Pacers [Indy Cornrows]: You know the Warriors could trade their 2nd round pick for the Pacers' #13 overall pick. Naw, that would be too much like this trade.
- Phoenix Suns [Bright Side of the Sun]: They didn't really belong in the lottery in the first place. As long as they keep Amare and don't blow up their squad they'll be in the real playoffs next season.
Who should the Warriors take with the #7 overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft?
I vote:
(The guy in RED).
If you're going to suck like the Warriors do, then suck in style!
With the 7th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft the Golden State Warriors select...
Brandon Jennings!
I'll pass the mic to longtime GSoMer mcwalter44 for some more eloquent HYPE.

yea I had the same thought. I don’t think he’s a great fit, but he certainly can play uptempo. I don’t think I’d trade Wright for him though and that seems like the minimum Memphis would ask for in return.

Trade Monta for Memphis #2
And get Rubio. Obvious for Warriors. Why for Memphis? They get a guard who can play alongside O.J. , who is becoming a Brandon Roy type of player. 2 guard facilitates the offense i.e. Roy, Kobe, Turkoglu, Paul Pierce, T-Mac, etc. Monta can still play off the ball and not be a liability defensively. Also, seems like Monta doesn’t want to be around anymore, just by looking at his body language towards the end of the season. Can’t blame him though. Ricky!!!!

That's an interesting idea ...
It helps address one major need on this team, and helps balance the roster.
On the other hand, it probably makes us worse next year (we’re probably a 40 win team if Ellis is back, healthy and wants to be here), in favor of chance to improve more in the long run.
Might make sense for the Grizz, too, if they’re not sold on Rubio. Although they may want Thabeet.

I know there's a whole lotta love for Rubio around here
but he looks like he’s robby benson in a bad movie … he doesn’t strike me as a legit PG in the association …

I don't know...
I think I’d rather have Ellis & Jennings than just Rubio. Biedrins, AR, Jax, Ellis, & Jennings starting 5? I like it.

well in his proposed trade we keep the #7 pick too so we could have Rubio and Jennings…or Rubio and Clark….or Rubio and Harden

Like Memphis takes just Monta for Rubio
Dream on folks. We’d at least have to throw something in. Now, if Monta was coming off his 07-08 season, it’d be a legit proposal. But Memphis is not going to accept 08-09 Monta without proof that he’s recovered from his injury, and you can’t get that until you see him in an NBA game.

I like this idea.
I have a bad feeling about Monta’s continuing frustration and his growing arrogance towards the Warriors organization. Or draft Tyreke Evans to run w either Monta or Crawford.

If we hadn’t seen Crawford this year I’d be a lot higher on Evans…the similarities scare me.

6'7" combo guard
He got a lot of play at PG during the second half of Memphis’ season last year and was great. Evans’ handles are legit and he showed a great knack for passing.
by onetwocross on May 20, 2009 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If by 2.0 you mean an improved version then..
I’d take him in a heart beat. Crawford is like the tin woodsman from the wizard of oz. He’s just lacking a little heart (and defensive ability). From what I’ve seen of Evans on youtube and while at Memphis he looks like a solid starter in the NBA. I doubt he’d be an all-start, but he should be able to play the point better than Crawford and hopefully be able to guard the opponent’s shooting guard or small forward on defense.
A Sonics fan without a team.. Though I'm auditioning GS Warriors this season.

we need to trade him for anyone
by gswfan2 on May 19, 2009 7:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree because I don’t think he kills the ball movement any more than Jackson does. At least Maggette is efficient by scoring over 20 points per game and puts the opposition in foul trouble.

maggette is better than jackson. bellinelli is a better playmaker than jackson. so is crawford, so is ellis. for gods sake turiaf and biedrins have better ball movement than jackson. at least maggette scores efficently(no matter your oppinion) scoring at 50 fg with tons of free throws is good anytime.

No, I do not watch the games. That’s why I’m here. I like Maggette off the bench and would rather have Jackson dealt than have Maggette dealt. I know I am in the minority with that one, but that’s just how I feel. People have different opinions about things regarding their team. It’s sort of like politics.

for me, the big difference is
if we got peices in place and jack can be a #2 or #3 option he looks great. Maggette is still the same mediocre player in that situation
by tafkasam on May 19, 2009 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
My logic is that I like having a 20-point scorer coming off the bench.
I like Jackson, I really do, but Maggette doesn’t stop the ball movement any more than Jackson does. I don’t have a problem with Azubuike starting and then having Maggette being his backup. I’d trade Jackson and and our draft pick to move up in order to take Rubio.

“an excellent man to man defender…that can pass pretty well and be an offensive threat…and has gotten decent at rebounding too??”
Wow, wrong on so many levels. First of all, Jackson’s off the ball D is as bad as anyone in the entire league. Second of all, WHEN he’s trying on D (which isn’t that often), he can guard his man IF it’s a good matchup for him. This basically means anyone that is slower than him. Like Dirk. He’s terrible at the 2, because he’s slow for a 2. If by offensive threat you mean…takes so many shots he scores some because hey, some of them are going to go in, right? And as for rebounding, that’s laughable. Jackson is a terrible rebounder. Hollinger’s stats at ESPN have him ranked at the #46 best rebounder out of 60 at the SF position.

by montadaboss on May 19, 2009 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jackson isn’t on the trading block, so that kills it right there. He isn’t a distributor. He played the point out of necessity last year, hence all the turnovers. Playing the point was probably a blessing in disguise, giving him the ability to find a few ways TO distribute the ball, in order to give the PG a rest, or to run a few plays for the PG off the ball. It was a good experience for him, but he’s definitely a SF.
Maggette and Crawford seem like the logical pieces to go. Their contracts make it hard for that to be done. The W’s do have a log jam at the 2 or 3 spot with quality players… they just aren’t stars, and we only need maybe one of them. Jackson, Maggette, Azubuike, Morrow… and even Crawford. The only guy you NEED to keep is Captain Jack. You gotta have a locker room leader to get the guys ready, and that’s what he does.
Azubuike and Morrow are decent, young role players that the Warriors can build on… but I think you only need one of those guys going forward. I think you need to give them both another year to figure out which one you want to keep.

Really? Do you know anything about basketball? Jackson is old and getting worse, nobody on that entire team can create a shot for anyone else. There’s no D on that team. There’s no post threat. There’s a serious rebounding deficiency. Where exactly does that translate into a good team?

If the Grizz are targeting Hill
They’ll trade out of #2 because there are many teams interested in Rubio. We’d have a better chance of getting the Grizz to accept Monta in trade for their pick than the Thunder.

Need a BJ?
no not that BJ…
really? B. Jennings? that guy is skinner than monta, which likely means just about the same type of defense. and have you guys checked his stats in the EuroLeague? not stellar. last time i checked he wasn’t even starting. yeah, sure at Oak Hill he was tearing ppl up, but so what, he doesn’t have the skills to be competitive on the level down from the NBA, so what is he going to do in the big show? hey, with this weak draft, i think we’re better off with a trade of some salary relieving action that moves us down the draft or possibly to an unwanted (low-cost) vet. then again, co-ro-wellie will prob mortgage more of our future to get rubio (or nash) or another project to get folks to re-up those season tixs. keep believing.
by blah_2u on May 19, 2009 9:45 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The EuroLeague is weird like that, sometimes. Keep in mind he’s playing against pretty damn good competition, in a really comptetive league on a big time team that has good players already, and wants to win now (especially since they have no incentive to try to develop Jennings for the future). His skills are nasty. I saw him play at Oak Hill, kid can pass, kid can shoot, pretty good floor vision. He was playing good high school competition, too, Ed Davis was on the other team, along with a kid that had a scholarship from VCU (the year after VCU took down Duke in the tournament). The kicker, though, is he’s quick as shit. Think Tony Parker quickness. He can get anywhere on the floor he wants anytime he wants. It’ll probably take a while for him to develop into a really big time PG, though, much like Parker. Jennings falling to the Warriors would be huge.

Why not trade down for Ty Lawson? He’s a true point guard who can hit the big shot and play legit defense.
Jennings is not a good fit on our roster. He’s just another Crawford at this point and obviously Craw didn’t help much last season in terms of making the playoffs.

Monta and him would make for a very small backcourt. Might be able to get away with it if Randolph , Wright and Biedrins are playing together.

My draft order if available at 7
1. Tyreke
2. Derozan
3. Jennings
4. Holiday
Think of how much of a defensive liability a Jennings/Ellis backcourt would be. Tyreke is what we need. Ty Lawson is athletically average at best and has foot concerns. He played great in the tournament, don’t get me wrong, but there’s a reason he’s not a top 10 pick.

Dream scenario
I don’t think it’s too farfetched to think that the clips could select rubio number one. They frontcourt would be pretty crowded with zrandolph, camby, kaman, rookie deandre jordan, and now griffin. Unless they can deal camby which would be difficult, it’d be tough to get all them minutes. Griffin could make them more competetive but baron would be still be doing a shitty job of running the show for a coach who doesn’t like him and a system where he can’t flourish and just straight up sucks. Seems to me like rubio could solve a lot of problems for that squad. he would do what dunleavy wants him to do no questions asked. Tell me if I’m living in a dream world or if i’m just stupid cuz I don’t think I am

Drafting Rubio #1 would be stupid. Griffin is a stud. You don’t pass up on a guy like that, especially when you aren’t good like the Clippers, just to fill a need. You take Griffin and figure out the best way to build around him for the future.

do you think this team is going to contend for a championship within the next 3 years? Are Wright or Randolph really tweeners? To me, both are pretty clearly 4s. Neither one of them has ever had much success playing the 3 in college or in the NBA, and both have been fairly effective 4s. Earl Clark certainly has some work to do on his outside game, but a big guy who projects to be a strong defender and passer certainly seems like a useful piece.

Russell Westbrook played two years. In that second year he mastered driving to the rim and lockdown defense. Jrue can drive to the rim, but he certainly can’t play defense.
Then again, no defense probably works on this team.

people get drafted
based on potential
and he already has excellent man to man defense…
and at UCLA he was being forced to play the SG cuz collison was still there…even tho his natural position is PG
also…according to the ‘draft experts’ he doesnt fit well in the slow paced UCLA offense…ie: would be better with the dubs kinda offense!
the guy can finish at the rim….defend man to man…and has vision….his jump shot will only get better…and a lot of people think he has tons of potential
biggest thing for me is….he’s big enough to play along side monta….and he is an excellent man to men defender…helping with our biggest weakness (dribble penetration)

Potential is overrated
Potential gets misjudged so often in the NBA draft that I don’t have much faith in it.
Here are my thoughts about Jrue Holiday as a UCLA fan: He can’t defend man to man if his life depended on it. Pac-10 guards kept scorching him; I always wanted Malcolm Lee at SG in the game to defend instead of him because he’d just get completely destroyed. Malcolm Lee is only an inch taller and also a freshman – Jrue isn’t even the best UCLA defender at SG. “Draft experts” have his defensive skills completely wrong.
Jrue’s jump shot and driving ability is likely to improve, but he’s not going to give his all for the team, if UCLA is any indication. He’s athletic and certainly is young, but we can say that about a lot of players. I just don’t think he has it to become a good starter in the NBA, which is what we’re after with as high a pick as #7.
Jrue made a comment that: ""In college, it’s all about defense," he said. The NBA “seems like it’s more fun. You can be you.” I suppose he fits the Warriors this way, and he will contribute on offense, but don’t look for him to help us get into the playoffs.
Bay Area Bruin.
by Yoyo on May 20, 2009 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I see the premise of your argument about potential, and don’t have an issue with it, but I think you’re a little off when you say potential gets misjudged often in the NBA. I don’t necessarily think it’s the potential getting misjudged as much as NBA people getting too caught up in the potential and not looking hard enough at a players drive and work ethic that determine how much of that potential a player is actually going to realize.
That doesn’t take away from your main point, though, that a guy like Patrick O’Bryant gets drafted way too high completely on potential – he had that potential, it’s just he was so far from it and hasn’t worked nearly hard enough to achieve it.

Tyreke Evans and his 6’6" frame, and SUPER long arms will be the next Gilbert Arenas. Can you imagine Monte and Evans, switching back and fourth between the point, scoring 100 points a game by themselves? Only trouble with that is that they will give up 120 points to bench players.
Brandon Jennings is too small.
Now that the Clippers pretty much have Blake Griffin, are they really going to need Al Thornton, Camby, Kaman and Zach Randolph? Throw any of those guys in with Boom dizzle to sweeten the deal for getting Maggette back. It will take care of some of their salary issues too. Maybe Kaman and Davis for Maggette and Crawford…. lol. Yeah right… only in a dream world. - OH, and then go get Chris Bosh.
The one guy I really like, other than Evans, is BJ Mullens. 7 footer, 275 lbs, with tons of athleticism?…. sounds like a top 5 pick, but I never hear anything about him… and they got him going late in the 1st round. Trade down and get him maybe?

Comparing a 6’6 guy to Gilbert is kind of…weird. Gilbert is the player he is because he’s a ‘tweener – he plays like a 2 but has taken on some extra ballhandling and passing responsibilities because he’s too small for a 2 and needs to play the 1 sometimes. What makes you think a backcourt of Ellis and a long 6’6 dude would be bad defensively? That should help them match-up better with most teams.
“Can you imagine Monte and Evans, switching back and fourth between the point, scoring 100 points a game by themselves?”
If that’s the case, who’s going to get anyone else involved in the offense? That’s a point guards job, and why Monta isn’t a good fit at PG (at least not at this point in his career). I dunno much about Evans and whether he’s capable of it or not.
As for Jennings, small is good in the NBA these days. Paul, Parker, Rondo, Jameer Nelson, Mo Williams, TJ Ford is alright…With the lack of contact allowed on defense these days, smaller, quicker PG’s are benefitting. If you don’t like his size next to Monta…well, I can’t really argue with that thought.
by Missing Barry on May 20, 2009 9:43 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Good points.
From what I’ve read and seen, Evans has really long arms, like Arenas, who is 6’4". Evans is probably a tweener as well. He was recruited to play SG, but was given the point duties instead. He was a complete ball hog. I was being a little sarcastic and probably didn’t make sense when I said that Evans and Monte would score 100 points. It was a little facetious. You asked, “who would distribute the ball?” And you’re right, neither guy would probably distribute it at all, which is why I was saying 100 points a game… lol. I think the fact that he’s a ball hog, is going to make teams pass on him until the later part of the 1st round. I’m having a hard time envisioning Monte and Evans having the ability to play defense though… especially with Nellie ball.
Again, maybe a big guy like BJ Mulliens would be a better pick? Especially with all the big’s in the West, and the inability of the W’s to compete with those guys… I don’t know. I like the upside with Evans, which is why I like him.
