Mikael Pietrus, NBA Champion?

Anybody's who's been watching this series knows what kind of impact Air France is having on LBJ. LBJ is still scoring, but he's having to work a ton harder and Mikey's forcing him into jumpers instead of just getting owned (which is what everybody else in the NBA seems to do). The Orlando Magic have a 3-1 lead in this series in no small part due to Pietrus' efforts on LeBron and he's been scoring well in the series too (13PPG on 8 attempts per game).

I, for one, am not too surprised that he's successful out there. He can simply focus on what he's good at, defense and open shots, knowing that everybody else is doing their job. This is something that he didn't have on the Warriors.

If they make it by the Cavs, and with a 3-1 lead they've got 3 shots left, they've got a very good shot at taking the championship. If they do win the championship, Mike Pietrus (who had been so hated by Warriors fans when he was here) will have earned an NBA championship. His defense against LeBron has been great and he's been very effective on offense.

I can't remember and I didn't see all of his games this offseason, but has he stepped out of bounds yet? Does it matter? For whatever reason, Pietrus was not wanted here. Perhaps too much was expected of him, perhaps he and Nellie didn't get along, perhaps he likes Florida. But he was a great guy who always gave 100% effort, and I'm very happy that he's enjoying some success. He's now a significant contributor to a serious championship contender. That's more than you can say for BD & JRich.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

... and JRich ... and Piétrus...

Yeah, except for the admirable showing v. LeBron in the playoffs, MP2 has had one of his worst seasons as pro.

Also, DFiB. if your aim is to honor him: it’s Mickaël.

First

I don’t know how to use those silly German characters.

Second, he had his fair share of injuries this year, as evidenced by his missing 28 games. I don’t see many Orlando games, but getting injured and finding out that Courtney Lee is an awesome basketball player are two large circumstances that led to him not getting the “starters’ minutes” that one might have expected him to see. We’ll see where things go from here, but I’m sure the Magic and their fans are glad to have him… which is more than you can say for the Warriors and their fans when he was here.

He’s the biggest reason upon many that I’m cheering for the Magic. Him and Foyle definitly deserve playoff success. More so Foyle though.

Pietrus

needs all stars around him. I still don’t like Pietrus for our team. He was good as the 4 or 5th option here. But he didn’t want that role so screw him.

I am glad he is doing well in the playoffs but he just doesn’t fit with us.

oh and he didnt mind his role

he just didnt want to play 4 and the inconsistent minutes

plus i think MP would of been perfectly fine doing whatever Nellie wanted had he received his new contract. kind of like how Maggette is suddenly fine with being a 6th man after he made such a fuss about it in Clipperland.

needs all stars around him.

This can be said for just about anybody. LeBron needs all stars around him, as evidenced by the all star by his side and his team being down 3-1 in the conference finals. What’s your point?

He was good as the 4 or 5th option here.

You need 5 guys on the basketball floor at all times, and usually it pays to have at least 2 or 3 more talented guys to give people some rest. Everybody has their own talents, whether it’s scoring, rebounding, on ball defense, setting picks, etc. You need to have a good, cohesive team to succeed. It also pays to have some supreme talents like LeBron or Dwight Howard.

But he didn’t want that role so screw him.

See gswfan2. He didn’t like being told to camp in the corner and let BD and Jax do whatever they like, despite their own inefficiencies coupled with being given the thankless job of getting beaten up by the likes of Carlos Boozer, a player he is not equipped to guard.

Pietrus’ game did not seem to fit the Warriors style, he seemed to need a more disciplined system so he could focus on controlling himself.

Pietrus needs to play with a disciplined team in order to have his defense mean something. This holds true for all teams & players that, you know, actually try to play defense. This is the biggest problem with Nellie’s system. There is no accountability, there is no “strategy” other than “find the mismatch and exploit it. Oh, and Jax, just throw the ball at the basket if you feel like it.” There is no strategy, no team mind set, just pass the ball around, take advantage of mismatches, and do cool stuff on offense, and the defense is left to blow in the wind. This is one big reason the Warriors will not be able to make any huge steps forward… the other being a lack of “superstar” talent. Notice I did not say All Star, we need more than that and the award is a crock of ish.

It just seems like the Warriors are never the right situation to succeed for most players.

Yep, in the past it was an extreme lack of talent coupled with an owner that runs the organization like a business instead of a toy. Now it’s a minor lack of talent coupled with an owner that runs the organization like a buisness instead of a toy AND a “don’t worry about defense or organization” coaching policy.

Hopefully this will change. I have every confidence that Nellie can turn this team into a playoff contender next season. Getting past that will require an offense like none ever seen on an NBA court or a significant change of mindset towards actually caring about defense.

meh. Pietrus is basically the same type of player that he’s been since Nellie came in and told him to become a corner 3 pt shooter/defender. it’s the same old cliche of “not appreciating what you have until it’s gone.” the majority of fans here (and you’re right, there was a lot of MP as well as Barnes hate and clamoring for more Belli & KAz) only saw the flaws.

but there is a reason we went from being around 19 to 22 in defensive efficiency vs 28th last season even though we picked up a huge upgrade in Ronny Turiaf at the back up center position and Monta, our 2nd worst defender, was out for much of the yr. as bad as Crawford is defensively the loss of 2 of our better perimeter defenders as well as a 3rd who at times could be our worst defender, but at other times are best really hurt our perimeter d.

Its too bad he finished his Warriors career injured

He was playing around 30+ minutes for the Dubs in March last season, but got injured, and they go 4-5 in his absence. He came back to play in the last five games, but he was only playing around 18 minutes a game and wasn’t nearly as effective.

The Warriors ended up going 6-8 once he got hurt, and but could have made the playoffs if they finished the season 8-6 (with a healthy Pietrus).

by Tore a Bore a on May 26, 2009 11:51 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Pietrus wanted to leave

Remember that trade demand? I actually think I remember him saying a few times that he just wanted to be on the east coast so he could be closer to his home island of Guadeloupe.

by Run Dubz on May 26, 2009 11:52 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If he really demanded a trade solely because he wanted to be near his home island

Then he would have done so much, much sooner. Or he would have just taken less money to play in Orlando or Miami in the 07 off season.

He grew tired of Nellie treating him like crap, giving him the “dirty jobs”, and telling him to do boring stuff on offense.

In Orlando, he’s got some glamour jobs, like often guarding the opponents best player, and has some defensive back up (from the DPOY), and his team is winning. So he’s perfectly fine with being the “6th man/defensive stopper” and camping out and hitting 3s.

Pietrus is on FIRE right now!

me and my friend, who’s a magic fan, call him M-V-Pietrus! M-V-Pietrus!

this is the cycle of Pietrus:

1. play amazing for 30 straight games
2. get injured in a freak accident on the court
3. suck when he returns for 30 games
4. repeat cycle

by HoLdEmUP on May 27, 2009 12:55 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

was surprised nobody posted a pietrus thread before

i was thinking the same thing. there was a lot of hate about a year and a half ago. actually, i don’t know if it was so much hate as blatant disregard and indifference by the end. i always liked the guy and it’s hard not to as a person. he’s just a goofy free-spirit who can light it up on the court once in awhile. when he does that he looks amazing, like he has for the past 2 series with orlando. however, when his shot isn’t falling he is very average.

obviously he made some bonehead plays, but part of the blame goes on nellie in my opinion. it is almost impossible for “role players” to get consistent minutes unless they’re on a hot streak. unfortunately for a player like pietrus, it was impossible for him to develop his game further and learn from his mistakes unless he got consistent minutes. then again, the last two seasons he was here, the team was in position to get into the playoffs and couldn’t afford any mistakes. it was a catch 22 here. in orlando, he had a little bit of leeway because the team was one of the dominant teams in the east and could ‘afford’ pietrus’ mistakes.

anyway, good for him. i’m glad he’s doing well and deservedly so. he always seemed like a great teammate and person. back in the ‘we believe’ days, he was like the team ‘mascot’ so to speak as he lead the team onto the court wearing the ‘we believe’ shirt. i think that should speak volumes about his role on the team despite his play at times.

here’s something to think about. would you rather have mikael pietrus or jamal crawford right now? both at current contracts and if they had the same contracts (i think mikael is the full MLE, i don’t know how many years? how about mikael or maggette?

i would say mikael to both, unless him and maggette had the same contract. then i would probably take maggette

i didnt hate pietrus

but i clearly remember, there was 1 thread a week about how MP would step out of bounds or travel consistently. If he would have done that at the crunch time in these Finals, we would definitely see a thread here about how good we did by getting rid of him.

All the best for Air France

I hope he gets a ring. Good, if misunderstood and ill-fitting, player for our team. He’s the last connection we have in the Playoffs/Finals until some major overhauling is done with our team.

by ryogahibiki on May 27, 2009 10:57 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Great defense?

I disagree. LeBron is averaging somewhere around 40 per game in the playoffs. I wouldnt call that great defense, the rest of the Cavs are just letting LeBron down.

If Air France was holding him to 25 ppg right now, I would call that a defensive victory.

I dont hate the man, but he isnt all that. Just a decent role player on a team that is peaking together at the right time

I agree

Its pretty comical to say hes making him work harder, when Lebron is putting up 40 a game for the series, thats not the matchup deciding the series, its like you say, the rest of the Cavs who have not helped what so ever and not to mention Ron Jeremy is completely outcoaching Mike Brown right now.

well, defensive victory so far, there's still time.

I am making no claims that Pietrus will continue to be able to affect LeBron’s game, I am just talking about what has happened up to this point.

by belilaugh on May 27, 2009 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Awesomely put

Pietrus has made LeBron work, he hasn’t just given him free lanes, and has forced LeBron to take more jumpers which stagnates their offense.

only half the argument

refers to his defense, which belilaugh covered very well imo

the other half of the argument for MP’s impact on the series is his offense:

- he’s outscored the entire Cleveland bench by himself:
http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2009/5/26/889136/damn-gotta-give-it-up
( yes, DFIB, great minds DO think alike …)

and, yes indeed he got a lot – A LOT of hate on this site, silenced for the moment it appears

by hardcore on May 27, 2009 5:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

MP is a ROLE player folks

It’s great to see him doing well but he is the same player that we had on this team. During the season I did watch a game where he moved his foot back and stepped out of bounds twice.
Now one would hope that players would figure that out and change their motion when shooting the 3, and I hope he has but still he has not morphed into a superstar player just because he’s no longer a Warrior.

It was always fun to hear his post game interviews and his infectious personality will be missed but as a player he is replaceable.

There's a party in my mind.
And I wish that I was there.

by qin on May 27, 2009 6:12 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Pietrus is a 5th/6th best player on a championship contender

Deal with it. Kobe and LeBron travel occasionally, is that so much better than stepping out of bounds?

he has not morphed into a superstar player just because he’s no longer a Warrior.

Who has claimed this? Certainly not I. Everybody is a “role player” except for a select few players in the NBA. Rashard Lewis, Hedo Turkoglu, and Rafer Alston are all role players. You use that term like it’s a bad thing. I think it’s a GREAT thing that Mikey knows his role and does his job without trying to do things outside his abilities. If everybody knows their role, does their job, defers to teammates that are better at what needs to be done, and the team is talented enough, you’ve got a great successful team. Championship teams need role players.

Mike Pietrus (who had been so hated by Warriors fans when he was here) will have earned an NBA championship.

You’re listening to the wrong fans if you think everyone hated Pietrus. Many of us liked his defense and would have preferred to trade Nellie.

Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?

He is doing in Orlanda exactly what he was doing in Golden State. Showing up every night on defense, taking too many shots on offense.

The only difference is now he is playing in the ECF against the games #1 player and is having success (I guess LeBron is lighting him up for record numbers but sure, he is doing a great job)

they don't just get better after they leave

the potential is there when they are on the Warriors, but it takes a GOOD COACH to know how to discover and capitalize on a player’s talents. Nellie is nowhere near being this kind of coach and he doesn’t come close. There’s a reason why he hasn’t won a championship, and this is a large part of the reason why. Brandon Wright will become another great player, but it won’t happen until he leaves the Warriors. Nellie may make it to claim the “winningest coach of the NBA”, but that’s a hollow honor considering how many years he’s been coaching, and even more so when you consider that there isn’t at least one championship mixed in. But it looks like Nellie will have the job as long as he wants it so get used to watching other teams in the playoffs because it’s going to be quite awhile before the Warriors see another post season with Nellie running the show.

by centerre on May 28, 2009 8:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

honestly? players don’t get better just by leaving the warriors. they get “better” by going to crappy teams, getting more minutes and seeing their per game numbers go up, while not being any more productive. guys who leave when they are still young get better because they’re still young and getting better. it doesn’t have anything to do with nelson screwing over young players; there is next to nothing to suggest that nellie makes players worse and when they leave they get better.

heart of a champion, will of the warrior.

Good for MP...

I’m glad he’s finding success there. To me he looks like basically the same player he was when he was here. He’s just in a perfect role for him (a role that he did play here for a while) which is provide aggressive wing defense, hit open shots, and occasionally drive by somebody.

MP is a good role player. We’ve had a lot of those type of players on our team. Buike, Turiaf, Barnes, Marco, CJ, Morrow, I think they could all be valuable pieces of a championship team given the right circumstances. I’m really glad that MP found those circumstances and I would like to see how exactly he would go about celebrating if they won it all. More crowd-surfing?
