When/Why you became a Dubs fan...
wutup GSOM, havent been here in a while because ive been buzy. But back on topic, as the title says, When did you become a warriors fan, and why you did. Tell us a quick story on the first time you watched and embraced them. The first time when you were like, wow this team is definetly the one out of the 30 in the nba that i am going to stick with, that one special moment. Well my story is, basically i stick by all bay area teams since i grew up here (xept the a's n raiders), ever since '93, i've been a loyal dubs fan, been through like 1 or 2 ups, and a lotta downs, but stickin wit em for ever. When and why did you become a dub fan?
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I became a Dub fan in the 4th grade.
I loved basketball and I saw a game on tv and Agent Zero was blowing up, then I saw an electrifying dunk by J-Rich, and since then, my heart has belonged to the Dubs.

I am originally from the East Bay and I love basketball. The Warriors were a natural pick. I still have some old games on tape from back in the day (I’m only 17, so yes, this is back in the day) of Antawn Jamison, Larry Hughes, Erick Dampier and such. I remember Chris Porter’s afro-like hair and the likes of Vonteego Cummings.

Chris Webber's rookie year
That was my 8th grade year, and the first year I started following hoops. Prior, I’ve always heard Jordan and the Bulls. When Michael Jordan retired, that’s when I actually got into NBA in general. I’m someone who’s always a fan of the under appreciated, so the Bulls were actually my team at first when it was now Pippen’s team. However, my buddy who I’d always talk $hit to (about how Pippen would school Sprewell) actually got me into the Warriors. So from then on out, my teams were both the Bulls and Warriors. When Jordan came back, I actually became an all Warriors fan. I was hella spoiled my first year following the Ws. Sprewell, Webber, Billy Owens, Gatling, Victor Alexander, Mullin, Avery… Yup, what a squad!

So imma keep my answer short: RUN TMC

Too bad I wasn't aware RUN TMC was around at the time
They would have been really fun to watch.

and why you did
Because I was young and naive, and I didn’t know any better. What a soul crushing decision in my life. This pretty much sums up the Warriors since I’ve been rooting for them:
“I was hella spoiled my first year following the Ws. Sprewell, Webber, Billy Owens, Gatling, Victor Alexander, Mullin, Avery”
This is what we consider being “spoiled” to watch. A list that includes Chris Gatling, Billy Owens, and Victor Alexander. And yes, I do have Victor Alexander’s autograph.

I was young and naive too, when I became a Warrior fan. A lot of guys have since came and gone, some of them who you didn’t want to leave(Gilbert, J-rich, Baron) and some who you couldn’t wait to get rid of (Mike freakin Dunleavy) but I really, truly, enjoy watching them, even after 12 very long years. I like watching them even during a losing season (like last season) but you can always expect the unexpected from the Warriors.

Oh my bad
I totally misunderstood and thought that was your way of saying that wasn’t a good squad. Forgive me.
by Golden Boy on Jun 1, 2009 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, there was a little bit of that in there, too. It was a good squad, of course, because Webber, Sprewell, Mullin were all good, and Avery was a solid player. It’s not nearly as impressive though when you think in the post-Run TMC era, that team and the We Believe team are the only two good teams we’ve been able to watch.
I guess I just expect more out of my team than 2 good teams (that still weren’t championship caliber teams) over a span of 16 years. We shouldn’t have to consider ourselves spoiled to get to watch a team like that once a decade.

Baron Davis did make the Warriors more respectable and exciting to watch again. I miss Baron (no homo)

Rick Barry
That Championship season was magical, Rick was the King and the rest of the team looked like superstars around him, he was the consummate player in every area:
I have hardly missed a game after, the days of Bill King on the radio, nine losing season in a row after 75, the only thing to root about was Pervis’s rainbows and Mr. Means rebounds: a great waste of the best broadcaster in NBA history in my openion: still remember the game in Boston where Bill got on the officials and called them Moe, Larry, Curly, the three stooges
Oh yeh I recall all world Lloyd B Free, and John Lucas, and for one year the great Bernard King: and watched them break up RTMC, but for the most part it has been a road of misery, with bad trades, bad management, bad coaches and bad draft picks: such has been life as a Warrior’s fan, and just when you thought they did something right, they got rid of JRich and let Barron go the next year: inept leaders who only care about the gross receipts:

Yo m8ty
I tuned in to Warrior B ball during the first round of the playoff the year of the championship season: It was poetry in motion, the biggest Cinderella story in the history of the NBA:
Rick had a couple good young players, but for the most part it was a young team with one name Rick Barry and everything was rotated off Rick, a totally unselfish team:
I would love to give Ricky B a chance to coach this team, he’s a proven winner, I know he’s got what it takes he just needs a chance:

Excellent point!!!
Even though he’s up there in age, I’d love to have Brent Barry on the team too if that ever were to be the case.

I wish I was alive to watch Rick Barry play and that '75 Warrior Championship team.
Waah.
That must have been Super Awesome to watch.
Big ups to you ForestGrump in continuing to be a hardcore warriors fan.

Eric "Sleepy" Floyd.
Became a big fan of his even before he dropped 51 points and killed the Lakes in Game 4 of the Playoffs. I was in elemetary school at the time and I was even called a bandwagon fan. LOL.
As the great Greg Pappa commentated:
" Sleepy Floyd is Superman!!!!" (way before Shaq and Dwight Howard).
I think it was a year before that I became a Dubz fan. I played in a Leisure Services Basketball League and they gave away free Warrior tickets at the end of the season.
I was like, “Whoa. They have a NBA basketball team out here?!!!??” Cuz all I ever saw on TV were the Celtics and the Lakers.
Can’t recall the exact date but we played the San Antonio Spurs. (this was when the Spurs actually sucked).
They gave away free mini basketballs that day and I thought that was the coolest thing in the whole wide world. I immediately became a fan because of the free basketball and because the Warriors won that day. One of the best experiences of my childhood life.
Ever since then, I continued to be a “bandwagon” Golden State Warriors fan.
The end.

I still remember your first "bandwagon" comment
I’m paraphrasing, but you said “I just love teams who switch head coaches every year and have starting point guards with the name Bimbo.” LMAO

B/c I live in the Bay Area....
I believe you should support your local pro-teams as part of civic/regional pride. I don’t get why you would support a team that represents another region.
So I’ve grown up as a fan of the Raiders, Warriors, A’s, Sharks,… etc. I feel as a fan of sports those of us lucky enough to have pro-teams in our home cities/states should take advantage of them and support them. Not everyone has the luxury of driving 30 minutes to watch pro-athletes play.
What if you lived in Iowa? New Mexico? Etc…
Sure the Bay Area teams currently suck but when they get better it will make that time so much sweeter.
Also as a young PG I loved watching Timmy break ankles.

Born and raised in San Francisco. Started watching the Warriors with my older cousins when I was in elementary school, during the Spreewell days. I think my first season following was the year after Webber left. Been in love ever since…even though I’ve only witnessed ONE great season in We Believe. I wish I was old enough to have watched and appreciated the Run TMC days…

Watching Run TMC while playing high school hoops in Nor Cal how could I not be a warriors fan. I have had some great time/road trips to the arena and I really hope we turn things around because the fan base is there. We saw it in the Dallas series, give us a decent team and we will come out!

When/Why you became a Dubs fan...
I was an A’s fan but when the Warriors hired Al Attles as coach I thought that was so cool so I started following Warriors games and was hooked. Soon came to realize it wouldn’t be a smooth ride when they failed to repeat as champs and then let Wilkes go, the first of many of my favorites to be shown the door.
Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?
I noticed there's so many of them
and there's really not that many of us.

Why I became a fan
I saw the Ws go out in the mid 80’s when I was a young teen and get an absolute Ike Turner beating from the powerful Celtics. We lost by 31 points but gave up midway through the 3rd quarter and the fans started booing. That’s when I knew I they were my team. We got into fender bender on Highway 24 on the way home …It was a sign of my luck as a GSW fan for the next 25 years. No joke by the way.
Sincerely,
I hate my life

In the early 90s, Lucky’s had a promotion where if you had $250 in receipts, you could buy a team jacket for $100, and I chose the Warriors jacket over all the other Bay Area teams, since it was blue, my favorite color. I guess that would do it.
