Our Best Move

My sense is that we've destroyed our national image as a front office and franchise in the last couple years (losing BD, Monta's moped, Mullin getting tossed) to the point that getting Bosh or any other big free agent is a fantasy. Why would a star want to come to a team that basically gave the cold shoulder to an NBA Top 50 great of all time?

So this is our best move with a young and contractually locked in core (Ellis, Biedrins, Maggette, Randolph, etc.): We should trying to move up to Oklahoma's spot. We still have a talented team that lacks a true young leader and superstar, and we have a lot of tradable pieces. I've read that they're interested in Curry and may want to trade down. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/24099667/

My guess is that Memphis will take Thabeet at #2. Conley is a lot better than we all think at the point and Memphis is high on him. Check out the last month of his game log: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4246/

If we offer Azubuike, Wright and our pick at 7 for Oklahoma's pick at 3, we'll be able to grab Rubio, who's really the only true point guard in this year's draft that we know is going to be a stud. The Thunder would love this trade if they want Curry. They'd walk away with Curry, Azubuike, and Wright. Here would be their deeper eight man rotation moving forward: Westbrook, Curry, Durant, Green, Krstic, Azubuike, Wright, Sefolosha

Most importantly, we'd get our young point guard to lock in now, which should be a huge priority this offseason. Lets be honest, Ellis is not a point. He has proven to not have the personality, and he's most suited to do what he did in 07-08, slash and score. A true point will make all of our weapons more effective, especially Ellis.

We would be losing Azubuike, Wright, and potentially Brandon Jennings but all those players have already duplicated skills on this team. We need to get thinner as a roster but more talented and specialized. By getting Rubio we could lock this core of eight together for the next 3-4 years. They could gel and become something special: Rubio, Ellis, Jackson, Randolph, Biedrins, Maggette, Turiaf, Morrow.

The problem with We Believe is that it only really lasted for a year and a half at most with a reasonably intact roster. Without the Dubs able to make a Bosh-like splash with all their long term commitments, we need to maximize the really unique talent we have already.

What do you guys think?

Yeah I think alot of us....

would not want to loose buike. Hes solid off the bench and has come around since his stint in the d-league. Atheltic, runs the floor, can shoot (I think top 5 in 3pt %), decent off the dribble, can handle, ect.

Rubio is going to be a bust; dont know why…just have this gut feeling. Even still, if we are going to keep monta (which I believe we will), I dont know how great of a backcourt rubio/monta would be. Agree with RunNdGun that rubio is soft. I’d prefer holiday.

Bosh is not going to happen for us. If have little faith that the front office could pull of something like that and keep key guys on our team.

Rubio's 18 years old ...if Okl gets him watch out we both our teams reach legal age...

…absolutely no one will talking about a " too soft Rubio in 4-5 years(or 3) when he will be only 22 yrs……sorry your wrong.

Do you really want Zac Effron on the Warriors??

Really? Do you Want Him?

Over Buike? What a Joke!

J-Rich, Boom Dizzle and Matt Barnes will always be missed

What a Joke!

Says the poster who just made a serious attempt to come up with reasons why Cleveland would flip us LeBron James for our unwanted crap. And then wrote a diary about it. And actually posted it. ;-P

I dunno, to me the joke is that anyone interested in improving the Warriors would rather have Kelenna Azubuike than Ricky Rubio, simply because he’s buffer and and looks better in his uniform and doesn’t have a funny nose.

It's pretty moronic to refuse to trade a bench player for a probable long-term stater ...

… and even more moronic if that probably long-term starter fills an area of need, and is seen by many as a potential franchise-quality player.

plus

Rubio doesn’t look at all like Effron.

also

his game reminds me of a mix between Mark Price, John Stockton, and Steve Nash.

by markdash on Jun 1, 2009 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Or just Jason Kidd, because he doesn’t have much of an outside shot, doesn’t score efficiently (or much at all, really), turns it over a decent amount, but has amazing vision and passing skills…

Doesn’t seem to be the same quality athlete as Kidd, though.

by Missing Barry on Jun 2, 2009 7:55 AM PDT up reply actions

He only half-reminds me of Jason Kidd.

Of course I love Buike. But the question is this, can he be a big contributor on a team that already has Ellis, Jackson, and Maggette locked in as key contributors? I don’t think so. We cannot hold onto sentimental favorites over making shrewd moves that bring us elite talent at pivotal positions (PG, C).

Plus, why do people think Rubio is soft? From what I’ve seen, he’s already holding his own as a pro in Europe on both sides of the ball. He has swagger, he’s a competitor and those facts alone would make him a comparably good defender for the Warriors. Our defensive problems have more to do with coaching than personnel, so there’s no reason for us to settle on a defensive stopper with a limited offensive and distributing game.

by eastbayglory on Jun 1, 2009 3:47 PM PDT reply actions

he’s not soft. he’s finesse.

by realist_ on Jun 1, 2009 10:40 PM PDT reply actions

Rubio wouldn't be that bad

Dude held his own in the Olympics. The top 4 teams in the NBA all have Olympians…
The Lakers have 2, and the Magic one, and Hedo played for team Turkey(although they didnt’ compete). The high level international experience is a plus, and the Warriors have none of that.

by jimmycaps on Jun 1, 2009 11:59 PM PDT reply actions

biedrins is on team latvia and buike is making a push to join team britain for the london olympics; i really hope he makes it.

I like it

Azubuike and Wright are pretty expendable with the roster the way it is right now. Rubio’s a better player and better fit than anyone that’s gonna fall to us at #7 as well.

not sure wright’s expendable unless he’s traded for a better big.

Dream Offseason

is one that stays put at #7…gets rid of Maggette’s contract, ships out Jamal, and brings in a star.

If Colangelo and Bosh are really on the fritz and he’s afraid of him leaving for absolutely nothing, then we can try to take advantage of it:

Andris Biedrins + Brandan Wright + Marco Belinelli for Chris Bosh
Biedrins’ ceiling will never be anywhere near where Bosh is at right now. Colangelo gets a Latvian and an Italiano to build up his international roster. He gets something for Bosh who might walk next summer for nothing anyway. To top it off, he gets a former lottery pick in the green B Wright. Colangelo, being a top 5 GM could probably pry some filler from us in order to dump a contract like Kapono or Banks on us.

Corey Maggette + Jamal Crawford for Andrei Kirilenko + Kyrylo Fesenko
It’s no secret Jazz GM O’Connor has tried to go after Maggette several times over the past few years. Kirilenko has steadily fallen out of favor in Utah and has one of the most overpriced contracts in the league. More than likely, O’Connor would pry Azubuike from us while throwing in a diminished Harpring, but this is my dream offseason so we’ll let it stay as is. Utah’s facing a tough decision in extending Boozer or Millsap. They get a scorer in Maggette, a reliable ballhandler coming off the bench in Crawford all while disposing of Kirilenko.

Stephen Jackson to Dallas for Josh Howard
Why make the move? Howard has 2 years remaining on his contract, a team option for the 2010/11 season. If he doesn’t work out next season, we can let him walk for absolutely nothing, ridding ourselves of Jackson’s long contract. Only threw this idea out because it was floated out there by the Dallas Morning news after the Mavs got bounced.

PG: Tyreke/Brandon, CJ Watson
SG: Monta Ellis, Anthony Morrow
SF: Josh Howard, Kelenna Azubuike
PF: Anthony Randolph, Andrei Kirilenko, Rob Kurz
C: Chris Bosh, Ronny Turiaf, Jermareo Davidson

The team above is a much better team than the one we have now, both talent-wise and in a much better shape financially.

Chris Bosh really isn’t a defensive presence, but who are we kidding, we have Nelly at the helm. Howard and AK would be great defensively, giving us some length and much needed rebounding. This team overall would be longer and be better on defense. Another year of Monta getting healthy and another year of Randolph getting better on both ends of the floor= Playoffs.

We could potentially have $35 million coming off the books after the 2010 season. I think the above team could potentially get home-court in the first round. Maybe a 4 seed? I’d say 52 wins.

by phiLthyphiL on Jun 2, 2009 11:08 PM PDT reply actions

We're not contenders in any sense...

we’d need MAJOR RETOOLING to even be considered contenders. Cutting Ellis and Biedrins loose and building around Randolph.

If we could realistically trade a few fillers and #7 for Rubio at #3, sure why not. But we’re not going anywhere with Maggette, Crawford, and Nelly here. We’re doomed to late lottery/fringe 9th seeds every year.

How am I the only one that hates Kirilenko...

…and would legitimately quit being a Warriors fan if we acquired him? Getting Kirilenko, honestly, is the only thing I can think of that would make me actually quit the Warriors. I have so much to say about him…most of it revolving around how he plays like a little crying schoolgirl. I have to stop thinking about this.

by Missing Barry on Jun 3, 2009 7:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Most Valuable Player on the Jazz last season, by a wide margin.

When was the last time we had a true defensive stud, at any position? The potential upgrade to our D by sliding Jack to SG and AK to SF is incalculable. Ditto the potential improvement to AK’s game by moving to Nellie’s fast-paced, freelancing system. (Think about what a demon he was against us in the 07/08 playoffs, Baron posterizing notwithstanding). Monta-Jack-AK-AR-AB might be the longest and fastest starting 5 in the NBA.

Personally, I could live with a large amount of hair product and schoolgirl crying for this.

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 3, 2009 7:32 AM PDT up reply actions

I mean, yeah he can rebound and play D. He’s also not a bad offensive player, but I don’t share your optimism that his offense will improve with a move to the Warriors. I’m sure he’d get some better chances in transition, but he’d also be hurt moving out of the Jazz’s offense that gave him a lot of good chances to cut to the basket and score efficiently that way in the half court.

I also don’t like the idea of pushing Jack to the 2. He’s too slow. A Monta/Jackson backcourt leaves a lot to be desired if we’re going to be a running team. I would hardly call that the fastest starting 5 in the NBA – Monta can fly but Jack will be slow for his position, and Kirilenko isn’t fast for a 3 (even if he’s long and effective in transition). That 5 leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to ballhandlers in both the halfcourt and transition – hard to fast break effectively without a player that can lead a fastbreak well consistently. It also gives us nobody to stretch the court out.

If we’re looking for a wing that can rebound and play some D, there are options besides Kirilenko. I just can’t stand him. Anyone but Kirilenko. I just can’t stand the way he plays – he’s like a little European soccer player with his BS flops and fake crying.
