Around SBN: Certifiable: Purdue gets elite win over Tennessee

" It appears unlikely the Jazz can avoid being luxury-tax payers and bring back both Boozer and Andrei Kirilenko. Kirilenko is owed $34.3 million through 2010-11, an especially unappealing contract for teams trying to clear cap space for the summer of 2010.

Kirilenko is projected to be tied with Pau Gasol as the NBA's 11th-highest paid player next season. There could be a taker for Kirilenko's contract in Golden State, where coach Don Nelson long has been among the Russian forward's biggest fans.

Nelson has threatened to trade Jamal Crawford unless the guard opts out of the final two years and $19.4 million on his contract. The Warriors also owe Corey Maggette $39.7 million for the final four years on the contract Maggette signed just last summer.

Maggette signed a six-year, $42 million offer sheet with the Jazz as a restricted free agent in 2003, which the L.A. Clippers opted to match. The Jazz reportedly expressed interest in Maggette as a free agent again last summer. "

I think of Watson as a cheaper version of Fisher.

If Monta can play the PG I would support bringing in the AK to split minutes with Randolph. It would mean trading Wright without a doubt, but AK has a decent jumper and Randolph will get some minutes at the 3. 2 is Jackson. 5 is Turiaf and Biedrins (Beans was never a minute heavy center). If this happened we’d see Maggette or Crawford get traded. Sloan would probably want Maggette for his size and ability to get to the line, but both Maggs and Crawford would thrive next to Deron Williams.

Besides, the Jazz don’t have a baller guard like Jamal. Brewer is nice for defense and reliable off the bench scoring, and Korver is nice, but they need an offensive threat that will relieve the pressure off of Williams. Maggette’s style is more similar to the Jazz’s, and he will abuse the person guarding him.

I bet the Jazz would opt for Jamal if he opted out and agreed to an 8mil contract that pays out more in the long run than his current contract. Then do a trade of Brandon Wright for AK, and it’s official. Or something like that, but Sloan could bring out some more defense in Maggette than he has shown since leaving Duke.

I would say do it, but I am worried about AK’s production going down. As long as he wouldn’t mind playing behind Randolph.

Chris Cohan and Robert Rowell? Oh no hide the children!

I too...

would be somewhat concerned over AK’s production, but I think getting rid of Craw and Maggs eliminates the risk since AK has a shorter contract than Maggs. AK only has 2 years left on his contract as far as I know. Worse case scenario, we could trade him as an expiring in a year if things don’t work out. That is, if Rowell doesn’t sign him to a 5 year extention before then, lol!

I'd take Kirilenko

that would give us a little breathing room with the surplus of guards. And we wouldnt need to trade one of our pf’s, we’d still only have 2, Wright and Randolph. I’d say keep Wright at PF and move Kirilenko and Randolph between the 3 and 4 to spell each other Wright as needed.

It might improve the Jazz too much though. If they would have had Maggette coming off the bench and scoring 20 like he does in the playoffs, things would’ve been a little different. I’m not saying they would’ve beat the Lakers, but if they had him all season maybe they would’ve finished better than the 8th seed and not even faced them first round. You gotta look at how the other team benefits from the trade also when they’re in your division…This one is iffy…

Craw + Maggs works better for salary-matching purposes

2009/10 salaries (assuming Craw doesn’t opt out)

Crawford $9.36M
Maggette $8.94
--
$18.3M total

Kirilenko $16.45M

That’s just about 90% — 89.9% to be precise. Maybe we take a warm body like Koufos or Fesenko to make it match more exactly.

As far as talent-matching, I’m more dubious. We might have to throw in Marco, Wright, or our #7 pick to make Utah consider it. Obviously I’d throw in Marco. Wright would be painful, but then he plays the same position as AK, and probably won’t ever be as good as him all-around. The #7 pick? … possibly.

I dunno, as far as pipe-dreams go, this seems like one of the more plausible I’ve read here lately.

I'm down

I’ve always liked AK as a trade target because he would work well in our system and is overpaid on a team that is looking at facing the luxury tax.

Plus, a Randolph/AK forward tandem is much more exciting than the Harrigton/AK tandem that we were getting excited about a couple years ago when the J-Rich for AK trade rumors first surfaced.

I don’t think this is horribly realistic, but lets say I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the early rumors surfacing about Crawford/Maggette. There may be hope for this offseason after all.

don't mind trading JC and CM

but adding BW shouldn’t happen. can’t trade a 21 y.o big who has one of the best PER in the league. AK would be good at the 3 given his talents, leaving the 4 for AR/BW. plus trading 3 players for AK is too much.

by KeepdaCore on May 5, 2009 12:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

WHY?? Two things that don't make sense:

If the Jazz have these contracts then they will not be able to give Boozer the contract he’s going to demand from any them. If they don’t pay, there really isn’t anything there besides D. Williams, (granted he’s an elite pg), to entice him to take a paycut. This is if he doesn’t take the $12 Million player option.

Real fast: Why does anyone think that it is a good idea to take on a contract that is going to be paying $17 mil in the 10/11 season. Keeping Maggs and Crawford for the time being will leave more options open which does not involve attaining THE MOST OVERPAID PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE.

You could package Maggs and Crawford individually with either Marco or Wright, (personally, I would rather keep them all for now) to get some damn good players.

This is a more solid 12 man roster than the ones above. I wouldn’t mind Crawford opting out and picking up Sheed or Lamar
Ellis/Crawford/CJ/(Draft?)
Jax/A’Mo/Belinelli
Maggs/Buike
Randolph/Wright
Goose/Turiaf

Contracts could go for Wright, Randolph, Beli until the 11/12 season, and on the cheap too. The sum of their contracts in that season would be under $11 million, (all are desirable contracts to other teams). Thinking how much they are going to develop as players and the chemistry they could build, it makes sense to keep them together.

The pop ups on this site are starting to piss me off.

Maggette helps. Don’t get me wrong AK would help even more, but Maggette helps. The advantage here is getting rid of Crawford and getting a shorter contract than Maggette’s in return. AK is a good fit here, but he’d still be incredibly overpaid.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=d6ah2f

On the surface, it’s a win/win. If Utah is looking to cut salary, they can give us their #1 as well. I don’t know. I suppose it does improve the talent, especially giving us another PF/SF that can defend, so our starting lineup would look like:

PG/SG (Monta)
SG/SF (Jax)
PF/SF (Kirilenko)
PG/SF (Randolph)
C/PF (Biedrins)

Good versatility, 2 good defenders, two great rebounders, an alpha dog scorer, and a whole team of guys who can get out and run (and a bench of guys who can knock down the 3, defend the paint against larger bigs, and some draft picks). Then we could use our draft pick on a quality PG who can run the break (Jennings? Lawson?) as a backup/insurance plan for Monta. We’d also have Crawfart and Kirilenko (and their $30M) coming off the books in 2011.

I like it. If you can’t tell, I don’t see any way we move Crawfart AND Maggette in the same trade.

I have no doubt that we could find somebody willing to take Craw and Maggs

But not Utah. They’re looking to cut salary, so if you give them Craw AND Maggs, you have to find more contracts beyond just Kirilenko that they want to dump. Harpring? Miles? Korver? Okur? I doubt they really want to move any of those guys. I suppose stranger things have happened…

….but you LOVE Maggette! Did you forget?

Thing A

by sam23 on May 6, 2009 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't LOVE Maggette

I just think he’s an effective player, had injury problems worse than before because they were a typical injury where you try to play on it and the coach’s mentality is always going to be “if you’re suited up, you’re 100%”, which lead to the injury nagging and nagging because as a professional athlete you don’t want to appear unmanly and say “My leg hurts, I can’t play today” (unless you’re Baron Davis).

That, and somebody has to provide some counterpoint to the whole “OMG MAGGETTE SUX!!! HE SUX SO BAD BECAUSE HE JUST GOES TO THE FT LINE ALL THE TIME INSTEAD OF PASSING IT AROUND THE PERIMETER FOR THE 3 AND ITS MORE BORING TO WATCH!!!!!” contingent. Yeah, he’s overpaid, old, and typically misses time each year. But he’s not nearly as bad as the bulk of the GSoM community seems to think.

Moving him for Kirilenko, who’s slightly more overpaid, gives the team another things it’s lacking (defense), and has a shorter contract, at the end of which we can negotiate a more reasonable contract, trade him in the 2010 offseason, or let him walk and use the cap space elsewhere (like on Randolph, Morrow, Buke…). Ideally, we’d get Utah’s draft pick this year as well.

This doesn't make sense for Utah

because the reason they want to rid themselves of Kirilenko is to avoid the salary cap, taking Maggetti and Crawford makes it worse for them from a salary problem. It is not going to be easy to rid yourself of a player this year because the salary cap is going down, not up. A lot of teams have real salary cap problems this year.

by Laoren on May 6, 2009 3:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

trade

I believe the NBA requires trades to be close to equal value – so if they trade, they will get back close to the same salary they got rid off.

However, they get 2 players and could waive another player, thus saving money perhaps. Of course the must believe that getting those 2 players helps them in the playoffs.

by mosdl on May 6, 2009 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The NBA requires trades to be within 25% of each other

Thus, if we sent out $15M, we could take back $18M and Utah could save $3M. Additionally, they can send draft picks that would not count against the salary exchange at the time of the trade, but would count as salary they are no longer required to pay, saving them even more money (Should be ~1.2M for their pick). So, Utah could easily cut $4M by trading Kirilenko to us.

Looking at the player contracts for next season

Maggs and Craw combine for over $18 mil, 125% of which is over $22.5 mil. The Jazz can actually save $4 mil in the trade alone; add in their draft pick, and you’re looking at $5 mil. Is that enough to really help them in their negotiations? I dunno, maybe.

Maggette + Crawford + 2010 first round pick for Kirilenko, Matt Harpring, and their 2009 pick at #20?

considering crawford is a negative in any trade, my guess is that’s about the minimum it would take to get ak, and i would be up for it considering the salary shed in two years.

realistically, ak is a better player than maggs and in this trade we’d get rid of a player that hurts us every time he steps on the floor with a bad contract and if we’d only need to give up a lottery pick in a mediocre draft to make the jazz take that waste of cash off our hands, you’d need to jump on it. i’m not saying it’s likely, but i’d jump a round my apartment the minute that trade came in. it’s less amazing than gaining a pick in the process, but it’s still lovely.

I'd trade our entire team and our next 10 draft picks for LeBron

But that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

The fundamental rule of Utah this season will be to resign Milsap, stay under the cap, and extend Boozer. Adding the salaries of Maggs & Craw will in no way shape or form help facilitate any of those goals.

lol. why did you target my post, I was the last one to mention something on this FanPost. And I never said it’ll happen anyways. Now back to the trade:

Adding the salaries of Maggs & Craw will in no way shape or form help facilitate any of those goals.

Uhm, Neither will keeping AK benefit them. Don’t contradict yourself, how are they going to facilitate any of those goals if they have a 15$ Million Contract on 1 player, who is in Sloan’s doghouse? They want to get rid of that contract so they either have to give up some their youth or extra picks and giving up youth is out of the question. Having 2 smaller contracts is easier to work with. C-Mag will instantly make their Offense better since he’ll be able to create for himself, thus freeing up Deron to do more of his stuff. AK’s salary is that of C-Mag and JC’s. Having two smaller contracts

Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor said he would not be opposed to taking on a long-term salary commitment in a potential trade if it was the best basketball decision.

Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson, or John Wall. A Warrior in 09.

Uhm, Neither will keeping AK benefit them.

Keeping AK is a better option than your proposed trade, both in current salary, current talent, and future salary outlay. In order to get them to make a deal, we’d have to help facilitate one of their aforementioned 3 goals.

If you have inside knowledge that O’Connor will be interested in Crawford and Maggette from a basketball standpoint, by all means, let’s extract as much value out of his ignorance as possible. I just doubt that he’s as high on those two as you seem to be and that acquiring two new players is pretty far down the list of things to do (behind clearing the cap space to re-sign Milsap and extend Boozer).

Conventional wisdom

would be that Utah needs to clear that space for re-signing those guys. I wonder if O’Connor has different plans in mind? There’s no guarantee that Boozer re-signs—he could decide to walk, or maybe he just ends up using the Jazz to drive up the bidding for his services. O’Connor could let Boozer sign elsewhere, guaranteeing that they re-sign Millsap (at a much lower salary) and replace Boozer’s points production with a scoring 2 or 3. They still wouldn’t be much under the cap, though, so the extra scoring would have to come through a trade. (Hint hint Maggette.)

by ffgolden on May 7, 2009 8:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thus

They trade for Maggette and drop some of their cap. I still don’t see where they say “Hey, let’s add salary to grab a mediocre scorer/terrible defender who makes himself look better by taking a lot of shots to increase his scoring average.” I’m not sure I see it.

Is Maggette + “enough salaries to make the trade work” enough to get Kirilenko? Definitely, if they like Maggette as they have publicly stated. They get a good basketball player, some young prospects, and some salary cap relief, we get another athletic 3/4 tweener. Would they be as excited if we threw in Crawford? I doubt it, they’d have to either take on more salary than they’re giving up or give us back another player. If Maggette, Miles, Korver, Milsap, and Boozer are going to keep Harpring glued to the bench, maybe they pull the trigger:

Maggette (4 years left) + Craw (2 years left) = ~$18M/year (Next year).
Kirilenko (2 years left) + Harpring (1 year left) = ~$23M/year (Next year).

I might see it happening if we sweeten the pot by swapping picks this year (only if we don’t win the lottery, of course).

PS. I just did some math here: http://hoopshype.com/salaries/golden_state.htm.

Maggette’s contract seems to be 5 years for $48M which, while not vastly different is still 4% less than the $50M being bandied about by those that hate him and a lot closer to what he’s probably worth… which means he’s overpaid, but not nearly as badly, which makes him much easier to move. Of course, I got this info from the interwebs, so it could be entirely false.

Boy I'm comming in late on this but I would love this trade!

From the CC Times I just read.

Could AK-47 wind up with the Warriors? Ross Siler from our sister paper in Salt Lake City theorizes that it might make sense for the Jazz to trade Andrei Kirilenko to the Warriors for Corey Maggette.
Not that he’s calling the shots (wink, wink), but Don Nelson has always been a fan of Kirilenko, who is owed $34.3 million over the next two years – $16.4 million this coming season and $17.8 in 2010-11. The Warriors are on the hook with Maggette for $39.7 million over the next four years.

Of course, if the Warriors were interested in the deal they’d have to pair Maggette’s salary next season ($8.9 million) with another hefty contract – Jamal Crawford’s $9.4 million deal being the only one making sense for Golden State – to match Kirilenko’s contract.

There's a party in my mind.
And I wish that I was there.
