Flynn Perspective From 'Cuse Fan

Have waited to make a post on the warriors and Flynn for a while now but figured with the draft close now was a good time. Just for reference, I have watched every Syracuse basketball game since 2002-2003 season when I started school attending Syracuse as an undergrad. Here is my take on Mr. Flynn and thoughts on the warriors taking him:

PROS: The guy has heart and as you all witnessed in the OT thriller when he blew up and became a name. He is a great point guard with tons of athleticism. He can jump out of the gym and everyone would be surprised with how high the guy can jump. He gets his teammates pumped up and seems to be a good leader not totally focused on his own stats.  He is super tough and probably one of the toughest small guys I have seen since AI. The guy throws his body around and seems to always get up for the next play

CONS: His defense is ok, not an amazing defender by any means other than being quick and stealing the ball. He sometimes takes plays off or disappears. This is what bothered me the most this past year. When Syracuse would be losing, you would almost forget that he was even out on the court.

OVERALL:. While I do not envision him becoming an all star (Carmelo Anthony) who takes over games,  I think the guy will be a solid NBA pick for another team (Bobby Jackson-esque), NOT the warriors. Why not the warriors? Because Jonny Flynn at the 1 and Monta at the 2 seems like a tiny tiny back court. With both guys on the floor, whos going to guard the opponents 2? I know nelly says that SJax will play the 2 and Nelly the 1 but I just think that ultimately Monta will be a better fit at off guard slot and I dont think that the SJAX at SG is our future. While I would still be happy to see my boy Jonny Flynn dressing in a warriors uni (bc I am a homer), I feel that there are much better fits out there for us at PG and hope we can select someone who can ultimately play alongside Monta for years to come.

I am tired of this 'he wont fit with monta'

If he can play, we draft him. Realistically he wouldn’t start his first year, if he was ready to be a real contributer the following year then we got trade bait. But dont pass on him because he doesnt fit next to monta. Pass on him if there is a projected better player……As far as I’m concerned, monta isnt untradeable. Should we draft flynn and he turns out be a real player, why not trade monta. Or visa versa……..

+1

Can we just post this as a sticky for all further discussions regarding players who don’t “fit”? Snagging a player at #7 who’s a legit better-than-average NBA starter is 99.9% of the battle. Any issues of “fit” are bridges we can cross if and when we ever get there. In the meantime, maximize talent, 24/7.

Thing 1

EXACTLY!!

and i like the idea of being willing to trade monta. he’s great trade bait and as I’ve always said, monta’s size screws up our backcourt…

Plus who knows, maybe Monta figures out how to play the 1 well enough to be an asset there. Problem solved. Rushing into decisions based on “fit” when you don’t have championship level talent to begin with isn’t going to produce a winning franchise. Just look at what it did for the Warriors over the last 15 years…

Great reply

I would love to have flynn on our team because hes the man so I can understand the argument to draft him if he can play. That being said, its hard to not think about the immediate future with him and monta. But agreed monta isnt untradeable and if Jonny is that good then might as well take him. Just cant imagine the front office agreeing with this mentality

What they said

If he is projected to be the BPA when we pick by all means grab him, besides he will more than likely be subbing in for Monta anyway, (if he gets any meaningful playing time at all) and sounds like the kind of guy you want coming off the bench and pumping guys up.

There's a party in my mind.
And I wish that I was there.

I have to say I was impressed by the workout video of Flynn from NBA when he worked out with the Warriors. Obviously a workout video, especially doing drills by themselves, doesn’t tell you anything, but one point did stand out to me. Dude can jump. For as short as he is, the ease he was dunking during some of the drills impressed me. A couple times he wasn’t even going hard, took a lazy jump stop and then dunked it easily without even trying.
